  1. Most of the sounds are actual sounds, but are usually from a database of sounds for other things. Usually, they've been tweaked for applications (I'm not sure exactly if TK has done it this way, but I've seen this for other things). The problem is that typical amateur recordings of actual aircraft engines tend to turn out bad because the microphone recording them doesn't have the range for the volume and frequencies. And even if you have the proper sound file, a lot of speakers won't be able to reproduce the frequency for the same reason...combination of volume and frequencies. I honestly haven't found a sound mod yet that quite reproduces that deep bass effect your are looking for. There may be others who can recommend something for you. FC
  2. Has Anyone seen this story...?

It's his right to say what he wants about soldiers. But it's also people's rights to say what they want about him. And if it drives him out of business because of bad publicity? Free speech means you can say what you want without government intervention...doesn't say you can avoid consequences from the private sector. Never pass up an opportunity to shut the hell up. FC
  3. Imaginary Grief

This shouldn't surprise anyone really. We become emotional about fictional characters in a novel, a play, in movies. It's only logical that this would happen in a sim...even more so because our virtual lives have been directly affected by their presence vs by proxy in a story. FC
  4. Today at work

You proceed under a false assumption. That everything must be either classified or totally open and said to everyone everywhere. That's not the way intel works. There are many things I could tell you about various operations that are not classified at all. However, that doesn't mean I should tell you, for the simple reason that although my information may not be useful by itself, my info combined with other information could be used to 'build a picture' for threat forces to use. Could threat forces build a picture without my info? Probably, but I'm not going to help either. FC
  5. My HDD died, a warning to all

Also folks, for stuff you consider important, you may want to consider an online service. We use one that's 55 dollars a year for unlimited. You can set it up for all sorts of options (things like timed backup so bandwidth doesn't get used when you're online, certain directories, etc). So in addition to on site backups of critical files, we have offsite...so even if the house burns down, our critical files are not lost. It's pretty cheap insurance...but it does assume you have a high speed (not dialup) connection with no bandwidth limits. FC
  6. Today at work

Alright, settle down. Storm, I would agree with SaE on this one. Taking pics at a stateside base isn't a big deal (otherwise, it would all be at night or expressly forbidden). However, deployment/redeployment info including routes and schedules might be more sensitive. If af.mil wants to post it openly, let them make that call. No big deal...just folks lookin' out for each other. FC

  10. Over is Dunn.......

It's funny, no matter how many times I see that movie, I keep finding something new to laugh at. Listening to the commentary, apparently with this movie, they tried sticking in everything they could think of for laughs...basically using the shotgun effect. "I say, let 'em crash!" FC
  11. PSA

    Okay, THAT is disturbing! FC
  12. Finally

    Totally different aircraft. FC
  13. Over is Dunn.......

Roger, Roger. Got that vector, Victor? How about the clearance, Clarence? Thanks for the secrets and the laughs. FC
  14. Finally

They would have to restart the line for An-124s. The restart cost is so high that any An-124s you get would be more expensive than buying more C-17s. That's why several other countries have bought C-17s for their heavy airlift needs. There isn't a single military type (drive on/drive off, high wing, short field capable) transport in production that has the overall capability (combination of range, payload, short field performance) that the C-17 has. FC
  15. If an engine catches fire, you have to shut it off. Once you do that, that engine is done. You cannot restart it...either in the sim or in real life. Or I should say, you can restart it...but it's not a good idea. Think about it this way...if your car engine caught fire and the fire went out, would you restart it?? FC

  17. 2010 Oscar Results.

http://oscar.go.com/oscar-night/winners?cid=10_oscars_gridLayout_livenow The Hurt Locker kicks ass at the Oscars...6 wins, including Best Picture and Best Director. So much for shiny effects and bloated budgets with egos to match. I don't mind a popcorn movie, but please, don't try to dress up a vapid, uninspired storyline in a shiny, technological wrapper and try to pass it off as something deeper than it is. Congrats to The Hurt Locker folks! FC
  18. Plus the AI can't do zero G combat. There was a thread a few weeks ago about adjusting the gravitational factor. I'm not trying to squash your hopes, but there really isn't a good reason for TK to add space combat capability to the engine. There are SO many things that need work instead. But if you want a taste of what space combat in the TW engine could be like... http://forum.combatace.com/topic/26637-as-of-right-now/page__hl__snouts FC
  19. Now THAT'S what you call 'Spin Doctoring'

Thread edited. Sieben, I don't know who pissed in your Wheaties and I don't care. Keep your comments civil or find yourself gone. FC

  21. 2010 Oscar Results.

Uh uh. No, no...there's a difference. See, I have no problem with popcorn movies...I enjoy them immensely. I mostly stay away from Oscar movies after the debacle that was American Beauty. The Hurt Locker seems to be a rare exception...a movie that is entertaining, while still making smart commentary on the human condition. If Avatar had marketed itself as simply an entertainment movie, I personally wouldn't have a problem with it. And it probably would have faired the same in the Oscars (ie awards for being pretty if not deep). The problem was that the plot was meant to make social commentary (as admitted by James Cameron himself)...but did it in a VERY clumsy and contrived away (really, the only supply of unobtainum within the reach of a race capable of interstellar travel is under one tree on one moon in one solar system?). And a plot about 'harmonizing with nature' done using probably the most advanced technology ever used for a movie? I could state other obvious weaknesses...but I digress. And I disagree...the folks who looked at Avatar knew exactly what they were looking at...that's why it didn't win awards for anything but SFX and art. FC
