Increasing Skyraider rudder effectiveness
Tailspin replied to malibu43's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Close. Ah well, thats the story of my life. Glad you got it figured out. -
I just noticed something. xeno2x, I see you are a new member here. I like to extend a hearty WELCOME to CombatACE! Glad to have you aboard. Looks like we had a little mix-up in forum categories but this the right place for First Eagles. BTW...Peter01 has updated the loadouts for a lot of the 3rd party planes. They are included with his excellent Flight Model download. Click HERE. If you'd prefer to edit the files yourself, we can help with that too.

Any interest in an alternative Dr1 FM?
Tailspin replied to peter01's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
IMHO, if those characteristics of the rudder could be added (another alternative FM....or 10 ) that would be a nice. I also had Emil's Nieuport 28 doing flat turns with the original FE. It does help with snap shots. Warning! I'm getting on the soapbox again. I've said it before and I'll say it again, rudder control and its influence on the flight characteristics of these planes shouldn't be underestimated. JMHO of course. I'm not a real expert on WWI aircraft nor an aerodynamics engineer....I just play one on the internet. -
Which aircraft? You should be seeing the Cooper bombs on the Camel, for example. Most of the German fighters have internal bomb compartments. If you are using third party A/C you will have to do some .ini editing.

Try increasing Cydc. -
I agree Bucky. Does the AI ever stall? I think that may be part of the problem. You can't follow the Eindecker in the DH 2 because if you try and match maneuver for maneuver you will quickly lose airspeed and stall out. The player is limited by stall speed so if you fly your DH 2 right at the edge you have the EIII turning inside you all the time. I just flew 4 missions in a row and the only kill I got was a snap shot that got the EIII's fuel tank as he cut in front of me.

Thanks everyone! I'm thankful that there is a place like this that, despite our differences, people from all corners of the world can meet and talk as friends. God bless you all.

Regarding the Triplane: According to Cecil Lewis, "[o]f all machines, the Triplane remains in my memory as the best . . . Other machines were faster, stronger, had better climb or vision; but none was so friendly as the Tripe. . . It was so well balanced that it would fly hands off on the tail-trimmer, which other aircraft boasted they could do, but didn't. It could do more than this: set the engine at three-quarter throttle and wind the tail well back and the Tripe would loop indefinitely. I once did 21 loops in a row!" -
A/C Service start & end date amendments
Tailspin replied to Southside Bucky's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
I always thought the month/year worked...I'm pretty sure it used to if its not now. It'd also be nice if it was possible to get squadrons with mixed types...easy enough to do in single missions for your side but its no so easy for the opposition. I suppose you could do it with custom missions by having a two different flights of different types arriving at the target area at the same time. -
Yes I know we are using B-1s for CAS and we used them, and B-52s, and B-2s in Iraq, but our intention to remove the government of Iraq was clear. Why not just carpet bomb all the Al Qaeda and Taliban "assets" in western Pakistan? That would probably save some lives in Afghanistan and would surely make it more difficult for our enemies. To hell with the consequences. If the Russians are smart they won't put themselves in a position of appearing to have had to back down in the face of pressure from the West. Further escalation won't do them any good in the long run.

The Russian government's "display" of military prowess goes far beyond what is necessary to secure the area in question. Ballistic missiles and strategic bombers? They are spilling the blood of Georgians to send a message to the West. Russia is on a very dangerous path. They will, once again, force the West to take a hard line against them. Seems to me that paranoia and self-destruction is still the norm in the Kremlin.

Photo Realistic Terrain for Cambrai
Tailspin replied to OlPaint01's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Same here Olpaint. Don't know much about terrains. I actually prefer the stock terrain or max188's hi res version of Verdun over more of the same type of FS xyz stuff I've been flying over since 2000 or so. -

Yet another German plane that was recalled due to wing problems, the top wing generated more than 2 1/2 times the lift as the bottom. This is why the top wing, weakened either by shoddy workmanship and/or water leakage causing the wing spars to rot, could come off...even in level flight. Fokker tried to fix it but the Dr 1 never recovered from this reputation in most German pilot's eyes. It was said to be very light on the controls, even the ailerons which like most WWI aircraft were still deemed relatively ineffective, and very powerful in rudder and elevator control. Directionally unstable (which contributed to its great maneuverablilty) and very tiring to fly the Dr1 was dangerous, to the enemy that is, only in the hands of a skilled pilot. It was also too slow and a poor performer at higher altitudes. Yeah, I know, tell all that to MVR. However its likely that without him, the Dr 1 would not have gained the the fame it did. -
I don't know. It appears to be a local campground sign and not an "official" type of Govt. notice. Regardless it funny and to the point.

Fix to stop bits falling off planes - remind me please?

You're welcome, Mike. Glad you got it set up like you want. That's the great thing about this sim. -
WOV won’t start
Tailspin replied to James1945's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
If its a MissleObject.dll error you have a conflict between the weapons pack and the version of the game you have installed. Patch up to Service Pack v.05.15.06, make sure your Direct X 9.0c is up to date (per instructions at Thirdwire), then Patch up to v.08.30.06, then reinstall the 03 Jul 06 Weapons Pack last. -

Its not about oil vs. other forms of energy in the long run. Its about the here and now, the near future, and our over-dependence on foreign oil sources and how that affects national security. There is a war going on, and no I'm not talking about Iraq specifically. Re: the medical analogy.... Lets say you had a chronic pain that was currently untreatable and morphine was the ONLY drug that effectively permitted you to carry on with your daily life. The Dr. says there is technology on the horizon that would cure you but it may be months or even longer before that technology is available. Do you stop taking morphine until you can be cured? Yes, you are addicted but what is the REAL alternative? Laying in bed writhing in pain?

........and yet again we are faced with the choice of the lesser of two evils. I don't really like McCain. Never thought much of W either. But, once again, the alternative is not acceptable at all.

Its absolutely ridiculous that we are being prevented from drilling in ANWR. The area already approved for drilling is a featureless coastal flat, nearly identical to Prudhoe Bay just down the coastline, and nothing like the "pretty pictures" of southern ANWR the treehuggers use for propaganda.

ASROC and Nuke Torpedos.....Anybody remember the movie The Bedford Incident with Richard Widmark and Sidney Portier?
-
The US Mk 45 torpedo (anti-submarine) had a warhead with an 11kt. yield. Close to that of the 13-16kt. yield of the Hiroshima bomb. The nuclear torpedo was later abandoned when the Mk. 48 proved to be fast and accurate enough to do the job with conventional explosives.
