  1. Have to smile .....

I must say, from what I've read on that forum looking for info, I have seen the worst tripe and inanity from that fly_retired. I have another pet name for him, but i won't descend to his level.I must also say, that I am getting back into Falcon 4.0 and that forum is well stocked with juveniles and bores. This is still the best and most civil forum I've seen, even with it's faults. I would really like to try ROF but the online requirement gives me pause. But I can tell you that no matter what, with my relationship with OFF, all I've seen, all I've experienced and the devs and people here, OFF will always be my first love. Having watched the dogfight video, it's really very impressive. I esp. liked the vibration while the engines running and the airplanes don't always burn when they crash. But.....I've said this since the first videos came out. Detailed and very good as the scenery is, something still doesn't look right. I can't put my finger on it, I can't tell if it's lighting or shading or what. It looks excellent, but doesn't quite deliver the suspension of disbelief to me that OFF does. I still want to try it though. Would love to get a demo. Did someone say Empire at War need a connection too?
  2. So much for comrades of the air

There were some sergeants flying for the British, but I have no numbers. I have seen them mentioned. Hey GZ, nice to see a fellow 'tweak' as we called them in the Navy (E-5 AT2 Aviation Electronics Technician Second Class on F-14's, VF-24 Renegades, 1979-1982, N.A.S. Miramar and U.S.S. Constellation)
  3. Some "Blue Max" movie info ...,

Thanks for the link ttiger. It did answer one question I had: what was the reason for all the different uniforms in photos of the German pilots? I could understand the differences for Army and Navy pilots but now I know the answer as having diferent uniforms from different branches of the Army and/or units, etc.
  4. MvR Triplane Artifacts

The US Air Force Museum in Dayton,OH has a strip of fabric and the tachometer on display.
  5. Some "Blue Max" movie info ...,

Would that be Frau Ingeborg? Ringa ding ding! Excellent movie. I thought my wife and I were the only one's who'd seen it. Got it on video . I did it to them before they did it to me. Is old Russian proverb.
  6. When I'm out and about and not being swarmed, I make notes on my map pf ballons and ground targets like army bases and train depots so when I get a lone wolf mission I can always fly to those and attack them. It at least feels like I'm making a contribution.
  7. TrackIR

Metal framed spectacles? I've seen mine in the profile edit.
  8. I guess it's up to me to announce it. GoGamer is taking preorders for Rise-of-Flight which it says is due out June 8th. Coincidentally....it's selling there for $39.90. Also, BTW, it says in bold letters...Internet Connection Required if there were still any doubts about that one. Will have to try it and see what it's about.
  9. Focus

I had a revelation the other day. I have always bemoaned the flotsam that designers (realworld not the dev team) put in the line of sight. i.e. Sop Pup crash padding, Halb DII struts, coolant pipe, etc. It makes it very difficult to track targets. But further thought revealed something puzzling. When I got my tailwheel endorsement, I flew Piper Cubs, Aeronca Champs and Taylorcraft BC=12's one of which I later owned. They all had diagonal braces for the windscreen and upper fuselage which I thought would be in the way and distracting. But, when flying, I noticed your focus is mostly beyond those obstacles; way beyond, and they don't even register as part of the picture, like they weren't there. Probably due to binocular vision, focus and processing by the brain. But , here, in a computer sim, we're flying on a two-dimensional screen and all our focus is, no matter what is at the same point: the screen, which, besides being where our target, runway, etc. is, also happens to be the location of obstacles to our sight; struts, padding, engine components, etc. The point to all this? I don't know, except I found another area in which computers can't completely replicate real life experience. Yet. I may have to do some experimenting with using zoom views, but being the purist I am / was, I wouldn't have considered it before, but may have to now, in order to try and replicate shifting my focus as human eyes do. I guess it's just trying to figure something out and realizing that doing some things you can't do in real life, you need to do to get closer to real life, thus bending the definition and rules of 'purist' and DID. Cheers
  10. Focus

You guys obviously don't remember me, had to change the name when we moved to this forum. See my sig. Been playing OFF since P1 came out and I've had TrackIr before that. Every comment helps though, but TrackIR won't get it as far as replicating shifting your focus. Appearantly only zooming so the bits are peripheral or out of the picture will do that. Or as Oldham suggested flying plane without the bits in the way. BTW, I have flown the DIII. I keep starting campaigns in the DII hoping to last long enough to feel the joy of upgrading to the DIII!. As I said earlier though, I need to do some experimenting before I reach a real conclusion. Thanks!
  11. Is campaign dynamic

And that's what separates those of us who play this as a sim or as an experience. You could've also done this in real life but in the end you have to look at yourself in the mirror. Same here. Anyone who's been in the military can tell you, it's not so much about for king and country or some high ideal or medals or glory. It's about not letting down your mates that drives you to do your job to the best of your abilities. Again, same here. It all depends on what your goal is. Now, given that, it might be fun to fantasize an alternate future ala Harry Turtledove. Such as...what if the Germans won, or America entered the war earlier, etc. All that would change the theater but I doubt it would change your role in it.
  12. Working my way through the war.

Sort of like the Dread Pirate Roberts then.
  13. Flyboys

It was done as a camera test as well as proof of concept and quality for the digital camera. But there's been a rumor for some time, that he'd do a full length film of the same theme. He did made it in only 10 days IRC.
  14. Or...'He fights and runs away, lives to fight another day?'
  15. I too would like to see more early war planes. But there are some considerations. In 1914, there was virtually no air war mostly due to the short time of the year for the war. So we're in 1915. Even with the early planes included, flying historically, you'll fly many many missions without enemy contact. Remember, most of the aces made it to 1917 with only a few kills and many had been flying either before the war or since 1915. so, if you're a purist, in 1915, you'll be mostly flying recon or scenic flights. It's 1916 when things begin to really heat up in the air. But, I do support the early planes as well as two seaters so we can enjoy experiencing the Fokker scourge. It really is challenging to fly in this sim when the other side has you completely outclassed in aircraft. How does one survive without becoming a coward or professional crash tester? i.e. EIII v. N11 and 17
  16. I have started to....

Doesn't that give all your flight members the same kills as you aka: the same skin?
  17. Flyboys

Flyboys: Decent story line, completely unauthentic and pandering. Yes, there was a black pilot but nowhere near the Lafayette Escadrille. If they felt they had to include him as some statement, they could've had him visit the squadron for a time, etc. What really rolls a turd about Flyboys is the director is touted as a WWI aviation expert. I too got the director's cut and it merely illustrated to me how juvenile the film makers really were. Red Baron: Much better film. If you forget it's about MvR. Continuity and time jumping was bad but it was nice to see Germans fly something besides red triplanes. The dubbing was ridiculous. The Blue Max: Stlll the best one made that I've seen. (Still have yet to see Wings and Aces High). And I really don't like George Peppard. The only German pilot in the film who spoke English without a German accent. I'll be the one to mention it....Crossing the Line....still waiting for the full length feature. A great 5 minutes though.
  18. Soon, you'll be praying for a quiet mission. I as just chase by 6 N17's at treetop level...and I mean treetop...all the way back to my aerodrome. My fingers were stiff from gripping the stick and I was sweating a lot.
  19. I was looking at addons and mods for Lock On when I saw a topic about what other sims you fly. Once again, someone posted a link to Rise of Flight video and everyone responded as though they'd never heard there were any WWI sims let alone another besides ROF. So, I popped in a little blurb. We'll see how it goes. If you want to look, it's here: http://www.lockonfiles.com/modules.php?nam...7a38906b0#48297
  20. Found another one.

If you're talking about the little menu on the left of the main page, it's a listing of the latest post, not forums, despite what the title says. I saw it after I posted and thought I shot myslef in the foot til I clicked on it and it took me to my post. Unless I missed something and am wrong. I'd hate to look like a COMPLETE idiot.
  21. Found another one.

To Whoever is in charge of getting reviews done, the admin at Lockonfiles.com appears to be Thomas D Weis. He's does reviews on the home page and has one for ROF. I couldn't easily find a means to contact him to suggest he look at OFF. Maybe one of you might have better luck or info.
  22. Guide to Configuring FSAutoStart

I read somewhere a while ago that FSAutostart can't handle memory of 2G or more but it still defrags what it can, so the error is normal if you have 2GB or more of ram. I don't recall having the same problem with Alacrity though.
  23. O's and A's

I didn't know the best place to put this, but in light of Winder's announcement, I have a complaint. Yes an actual complaint (my first I think for OFF all 3 phases). You all might want to look into this as you continue development. The script or font used on the 'chalkboards' in the manager (briefings, squadron rosters, wingmen assignments, etc.) should be looked at, changed or what-have-you. I say this, as the lower case a and o appear to be the same. They're at least indistinguishable. I run at 1280 x 1024 x 32 resolution. This becomes most important with crew names, esp. German. And, as I use the default campaign system which requires crew names to be entered, I need to know whether it's "von Haase" or "von Hoose". The only way I can resolve this is to turn on labels when I'm close enough and see how the name is displayed in that font. That's all. I use the default claims system because I'm more concerned with doing my duty and killing the enemy before he kills me than I am with racking up a score. That should say a lot to the profound suspense of disbelief you guys have achieved. Thanks.
  24. O's and A's

    Thank you
  25. Actually you can without changing anything. Start with RNAS 3 in Oct 1916 I think. You'll start out flying the Sop 1 1/2 then if you live long enough, transition to the Sop Pup, then the Sop Triplane and finally the Sop Camel. I find RNAS 3 interesting because you get to fly a two seater, do ground attack missions but also do some fighter missions with it as well. And a good rear gunner comes in handy. Polished off a few EA that way when my ammo ran out.
