  1. Ram & Performance

Thanks sitting_duck I've download TeamSpeak and I'm going to get it installed this weekend so I can see Z. It looks like it will also help keep my monitor cleaner as well by eliminating nose smudges. I might or might not get an additional 2gb after I've run several scenarios using VRD if there is no appreciable performance gain; I just don't know. Unfortunately, XPP32 won't use all 8 like XPP64 will. You're a brave one for going XP64 as are all those who went Vista. If you got X64 up and humming and working well, you'll get no static from me, only admiration. I'm going to have to revisit X64 and see what state it's in now: I've still got the software. That 8gb is awfully enticing.
  2. Next airplane for OFF?

I put my 2 cents worth in for the Nieuport 28 for history and also for the Siemens because the Germans built one heck of a plane.
  3. Ram & Performance

Addendum: [ Doesn't matter if its Vista or XP a 32bit OS will only address 4 GBs of ram max. Contrary to what someone said 32bit Vista, just like 32bit XP will use 4GBs of ram. That 4GBs, thou, includes the memory in your sub systems like your video card and PCI cards. Since the OS needs the sub systems to run it allocates the subsystem's memory first then will only address the remainder of that 4GBs in your installed ram. Just using a 512MB video card for the sub system, as an example, after allocating the 512MBs of memory on the video card your OS would then only address 3 1/2 GBs of your 4Gbs of installed ram and thats why you only see 3 1/2 GBs of ram when you have 4 GBs installed. Exception is Vista SP1 where you can now see all 4 GBs if you have it installed but thats it. You just see it and its not all being addressed. If you took your 512MB card out and replaced it with a 256MB video card then you would see your ram jump from 3 1/2 GBs to 3 3/4 GBs because, with 256MBs of less ram in the sub system to address the OS can address 256MB more of the installed ram. You could use 64bit XP and use all 8 GBs of ram but I suggest against it because 64bit XP is the most incompatible OS I've ever seen. ] Copied from Yahoo_Ram_Tech Support. This one sums it up nicely. So, that leads me back to my initial question about VRD. There's probably a lot of folks running XPP32 with 2gb ram with procs from 2-3ghz. I'm also a cat lover and over the years, the curiosity of the owner's I've lived with as rubbed off on me. I'm going to go back to box stock @ 2.93 and see what happens using a VRD. I'll start making preps this weekend and take one logical step at a time. I'll try to "ignore" my wife's " are you still..." as much as she can tolerate. I'll type later.
  4. Ram & Performance

Thanks! I'm going to look into team speak. I was runinng @ 2048 max but Z=tiny, tiny red "thingies". The sweet spot and best performance for my monitor is 1920 x 1200-32 75hz 16:10, so I keep it there when ever possible. My board does support 8gig. XPP32 only "sees" 3.5 and 3.65 if the gods love you. Quite frankly. I've never researched to find out if in fact XPP32 will actually use all 8 but only sees 3.5. Can anyone chime in on this? It may just make experimenting with VRD a moot point. I'm running Corsair DDR2-6400@ 3-4-3-9.
  5. Ram & Performance

Ok....What the hey. Would using QC as test be adequate? I could load 4-5 planes against me with dynamic weather, etc. I've only got one campaign flight under my belt and I don't want to "waste" any of the precious me's up there. By the way, is there a program that can automatically map fps usage in the sim? I run at 1920 x 1200 and Z=tiny red markings.

  7. Drop to Desktop

I run Intel, but before Core2, I was researching AMD X2, pros and cons and a majority of the cons revolved around what you're experiencing setting "affinity". Some of the utilities that do also affect executables and can cause stange bumps in different kinds of games. I do remember a tiny utility, Affinity.zip that doesn't mess with anything but nulling a CPU core. It's tiny at 51k. I googled and found it's still up on Filefront. Maybe it'll help. Running 3.65 on air since 12/06. My AMD 4000 single is now used for "retro" where I run 66.93 vid for games because NVIDIA BORKED 8-bit support.

As above except I've always used DC Pro and uninstall driver through system. I've started comparing my regs from 178 to 182.05 to 182.06 and I've noticed a slight discrepancy between .05 and .06. PHYS X. I was under the impression that the only difference between .05 and .06 was that .06 was the WHQL version of .05. I think the message generated is something going bump between .05 and .06 when uninstalling .05. I'm going to try DS just for the heck of it and see if I can get .06 installed cleanly. It doesn't hurt to try another pair of eyes. Nothing against mods or betas, I just like W's when possible. If it's a no go this weekend, I'm going to nuke the hd and put my .05 b/u on until something else comes along that looks like it'll make a worthwhile difference. The 10-15 fps I gained using .05 was very worthwhile. This doesn't help poor phantomjoker though. I puzzled about no errors being generated even on the front end when it goes BSOD.

My apologies. DX E=DirectX Eradicator 2.0 (current version). It's not DX9*. I think in short hand and type same sometimes, my bad. I haven't had to use it in XPP32, yet, but I checked with a friend and he's used it once without any problems. You never know though, code can have a bad day like everything else. I've run into a really wacky error message when I upgraded from 182.05 Beta Xp to 182.06 WHQL XP32. The error message is almost gibberish. I don't have clue as of right now so I posted at EVGA for some help; Nvidia is a joke. Since CFS3 actually crashes/locks up system, I'm really surprised that no error messages are being generated. Ummm....That's a stumper. Hey OVER50, any ideas on this? You're a lot more up to date on the history. I'd hate for someone to have to go through OS reinstall and it's potential pitfalls. I just nuke it myself and reload my ISO b/u and I'm getting close to doing just that because of that gibberish message. I'll go back to the Beta if I have to; I don't want to lose the 10-15 fps I've gained and fps is same with WHQL.

I don't think swapping out the cards will really do anything except to add to your frustration. It doesn't look to be video hardware. Since you're going to roll back the video driver, try one more thing. If you still have the same issues after rolling the driver back, install DirectX Eradictor 2.0. Google for download sites. It supports 2.0 through 9.0c (not DX10) and it has safely removed DX* when dxdiag debug pointed to some type of file corruption. Remove DX and install the newest "redistribution" of DX so you have the complete file and don't have to go through the update dance. DX E hasn't affected installs with 98SE or W2K Pro when I've used it and I haven't had to reinstall an OS when I've encountered driver, software, dx conflicts. After that, OVER50 is right; a reinstall of your OS is the last thing to do. If you want to try the vid swap first and no one can help you, I've got a 7800 Ultra I keep for testing purposes. It's clean and I know it has no issues. I can send it to you and you can reimburse me for the the in/out shipping when you return it. Good luck. That's about all I can type.
  11. First Technical Question...

Congrats !!! Rooster for getting it all sorted out and working.

Software can and is a real pain to troubleshoot. All you have is a disk. When I got my copy of OFF3, I backed up the registry. Don't ask. I always b/u the reg: everythings working there. I started install and when it got to "sounds/brit something or other...errors and it backed out. Ok, start checking and found stream errors. Got microfine cloth and cleaned the disk. Cleaned all entries, check reg all ok. Install 2 same thing...son of a gun...opened up the dvd and saw function light looping. Okay different messages, same sector area so clean disk again more thoroughly. 3rd install...ERRORS, different messages, SAME SECTOR AREA: I've got a bad disk. Go eat supper then go back to do battle. Looked at disk, took off glasses because bifocals don't work well up close and looked very closely and saw a tiny, tiny, tiny discoloration. CLEANED DISK CORRECTLY THIS TIME. 4th install, got into the air. When I landed I went into the hanger and kicked myself; I could have avoided 2 aborted installs. Went back up into the air and took my wrath out on a DR1 XP PRO 32 SP3 just laughed and said: lasers, can't trust them. Diffraction with the dvd vibration causing it to hit at different points in the same area? Don't know: sounds good to me.

You got that right. You, we, have one great advantage though, and that's thinking ahead, planning ahead. Youth has reflexs, we have planning, anticipation and patience. All you need is one or two well planned bursts and a #2 "twitch factor" will get the job done. On the other hand, if you've taught or started to teach him the importance of planning, looking ahead and patience, you're toast up there.
  14. Finally Got in

Sorry for your problem: been there too with issues that drive you crazy. What's your computer trying to tell you in EVENT VIEWER? Are there any anomolies or consistent problem entries? What does DXDIAG say? Is there a debug entry (message)? Have you tried CFS3, without the 3.1 patch using CD2 to start the game? Does that work? If that works, you're on to it. Sorry, I got ahead of myself. Need to backup. Were the CFS3 cds and the 3.1 patch you're currently using ever installed on another machine without any problems?

Excellent. More "tinkering". And by the way, I haven't stalled my rotary or inline using the 2/3's you suggested. I've sputtered a couple of times, but I haven't had to glide. Thanks.
  16. First Technical Question...

XP PRO comes in two flavors; 32/64. Open up C: and see if how many program files you have: (1) program file=32 (2) files, Program Files and Program File X86, if I remember,= 64. I messed around with XPP64 only long enough to know I didn't want anything to do with it. "Things" ? "Cyclic Redundency Error" Possible causes: Bad CD/DVD Read or corrupted disk track(s); Bad unistall/reinstall of a specific program, probably CFS3; Registry Data problem. If "Windows Installer" pops up a startup, you will have registry data problem(s). And a couple more + that are not so common. You don't have those because you're partially functioning. You REALLY need to get your mobo setup for basic operation 32 or 64, a clean install of the OS, do whatever it is you want to do to the bios, install driver for vid, install XFI and load it's original drivers, than nics, then update all the drivers, OS updates, then the other 2gig of ram before you start installing any programs. One step at a time, in a logial progressive order. When something goes south during the build, you'll know exactly when, where. It'll make finding out how and why much easier. Right now, you have to many variables to contend with. I hope this helps; it's about as far as I can type at.

WOW! Setup a LAN and whoop up on him. Show him he's got a lot to learn. "Tough" love, better gaming and lot's of mutal respect.
  18. OFF & TrackIR

I had considered FREETRACK, but I'm lazy and wanted "someone" else to do the dirty work first, so I bought the T4. I guess I'm just a custodian. Please let me know how it goes and how it works. The posts I've researched indicate the TIR mouse may be a hit/miss proposition and needs continous fiddling. TIR won't place nice with GLOVEPIE, but FREETRACK does in mouse emulation, at least that's what I've been able read so far. Who knows, I just might have to get in shape to change emulators for different sims. I'm lazy, but I could rationalize it as an exercise program. ps. Is there a good voice recognition program that can handle inputing script? I may have to do more exercising. I hate typing: "hunt and peck" get confused sometimes.
  19. First Technical Question...

Check the documentation on mobo setup cd and make sure you've got 15.23_ 32.exe and not 64. You can install the 64 driver set and you'll have nothing but conflicts running 32 OS.
  20. OFF & TrackIR

I'd love to see how it works on 47" !!! monitor. I have a GDM-FW900 24" flat panel, all 109lbs of it. It isn't going anywhere until it dies.
  21. OFF & TrackIR

How far past OVER50? I'm 57. Feel 40 flying OFF. My wife thinks I'm a "teenager" and gets mad sometimes. Buy TIR4. Its a great investment. If you don't run it USB direct off your mobo, get a powered hub. That's what I use; much easier unplugging stuff from it top side when I have to. If you get disoriented or uncomfortable, back off a little while. It took me a couple of weeks before I could use it for LONG stretches. Controlling maximum screen movement while maintaining visual orientation is no different than learning angles to lead a plane to shoot it down. It doesn't look right at first and doesn't seem normal, but you get a lot more kills than by always shooting from the 6. After a couple of weeks, you'll find it very hard to use the pov to change view in sims that don't support TIR or mouse look. Go to NATURALPOINT and look up the games that support it. I was one of those who got wastebasket sick when DOOM came out. The corridors, angles and color mix got me for awhile.
  22. OFF

I think OFF3's beauty, balance, realism and depth of play is on the same plane (no pun intended) as that of Dynamix's RED BARON was to revolutionizing the flight sim genre. Il-2, in my opinion, is one of the most technically authentic sims produced to date. OFF3 has that and added pure gaming enjoyment and wanting to "play" the game well to the mix. One word comes to mind, craftsmanship. And that's very rare. I've even started posting and I haven't done that in many years.
  23. OFF & TrackIR

I started with TIR4 box stock. Played around with the settings, found what was comfortable and used that as a baseline. From there I started trying different types of reflective tape and found one that "tightened" the response without adjusting any of the settings. So now I had repeatability so I started trying different angles, positions to improve accuracy. I then "modded" the size of targets (on the hat clip) and found I now had better reflection. I then used a secret weapon (Q-tip) and used the body to roll the edge of tape so as to affect the rate-of-change the transmitter saw when the targets were getting close to or were on their edge. Then, whew, I found I'm able to fly OFF3 without having to recenter in the sim, even leaving it to go to mess, back to field then back up in the air again. I found that if I start square with my monitor and don't move until the flight actually begins, I don't have to center at all. Some of this may help or hinder the performance in your setting. The only given I've found is that the TIR transmission is linear and the visual background is very important. Once those variables are no longer in the picture, it's a simple matter of just how far you want to try go to achieve realism. My next task is to see if I can get the same results in mouse emulation. I'll be using RB3D since it has some TIR mouse coding using RELOAD. Next I'll try a sim that has true mouse look. But I'm afraid that may take some time: OFF3 is so beautiful to fly around in, I'd rather spend my "play" time in the sim than experimenting.
  24. First Technical Question...

I built my 680i/X6800 back in 12/06. There were many problems then since it was cutting edge at the time. If you still can't resolve problems, start from square one. Use only 2 sticks of ram. XP won't see more than 3.63 and XP has had some problems with that. Look at the manual and place them exactly as shown for 2gig. Pull all you nics and XFI and only have your vid installed. Reformatt HD and use mobo setup cd with those drivers. Install XP1. Is it a slipstreamed copy or original? That should get you up and able to get ethernet authorized. Go to EVGA.COM and load current mobo drivers if any. Then intall vid drivers, install XFI, then nics. You'll probably have to have Billy re-authenticate your OS if its original. Not sure about slipstream. Backup your registry so you can reload if anything goes haywire. Then reinsall ram to 4 gig.
