  1. Once you have the pc, you'll need to download and install MS's Directx June 2010 Redistributable in order to have dx9.0c fully functional. You'll find that the ability to run older games is influenced by both the gpu than the os. For example, Nvidia borked EAW when 8-bit support was dropped. With an Nvidia card, you'll need to run the 1.28E EAW zipper. I'm running IL-2 HistoMod 4.5, HSFX as separate installs with DBW-ModAct-UP3 as a combo direct, without compatibility and not as administrator. As you've found out, it's trial and error as to what will run or what workarounds are needed. plug_nickel ps: congrats on drawing a wining hand with your soon-to-be pc and welcome to the forums.
  2. Joystick insensitivity

Since it's a twist grip, there should be 3 separate pots, one for each axis. You should be able to find them by tracing the connectors from the board to each pot. You can't "tinker" with js curves within OFF; only externally through your Saitek software and then saving it as a profile. plug_nickel
  3. Joystick insensitivity

The first and "most" obvious course is to check the raw data that the js transmitting. I'm not sure if this can be done through your Saitek software, however, I'm sure it can be so maybe another flyer can chime in this regards. The point to doing this is to see if the js pots have or are starting to deteriorate or if they're just in need of good cleaning. That "waterlogged" feel sounds like an increase in electrical resistance within the pot. The wiper and terminals may have started to oxidize due to repeated use. Sometimes a good cleaning can resolve it, sometimes not. As you describe the problem, the insensitivity has "always" been there, but is now more noticeable. You most likely haven't setup any js response curve profiles for any of your flight sims. That would be my guess to your "always" comment. That it's now more noticeable leads me to the pots assessment. A comparison between OFF and Rof fm's isn't of any benefit in checking out your js responsiveness. You need to view the raw data as it's being sent. Faulty pots will make a good pilot mediocre and a poor pilot frequently dead no matter what type of curve is setup. plug_nickel
  4. Stupid anti-virus question!

Before I was laid off in 2009, the company I.T. guy sent me a link about changing over to ESET. It had an either/or subscription of 5yrs for business/personal. I think it was a mix up in that I believe that the 5yrs personal reduced rate was intended for those who were already using ESET's a-v for business. I don't know if there is a 5yr anything anymore; I haven't checked since I'm still covered. And now you know the rest of the story... plug_nickel
  5. Joystick insensitivity

Need to clarify "up until recently". Has the js been performing fine when flying the Camel during previous flights and now it's not, or, are you finding this out now because you've started flying the Camel for the first time and you're noticing a lack of response? plug_nickel
  6. Stupid anti-virus question!

It sounds like you were one of the ones that got the 5yr business/personal option before ESET canned it. I was also able to nab one: my subscription is do to expire in 2014. Best money for a-v software I've ever spent. plug_nickel
  7. Stupid anti-virus question!

AH!!! Your subscription is up. That's makes more sense. If you're not going back to ESET due to cost, then MS Security Essentials is about the best freeware out there at the moment. plug_nickel
  8. Stupid anti-virus question!

???? When did ESET stop with the updates/services? This is news to me. I've been using ESET for quite a while and IMHO, they're the best in the business. plug_nickel
  9. I WANT ONE!

Video "says" it all. Barf-bag is optional. plug_nickel
  10. I WANT ONE!

Next step would be to setup a motorized platform with a slew ring for simulating yaw. I wonder what it would be like to have TrackIR working when in a full roll. plug_nickel
  11. OFF Won't Start

You can get WMP_11 for W7_64 through a download link at the WinMatrix website. plug_nickel
  12. CFS 3 and OFF won't run

IF you're using a A.V. program, I'm wondering if a .dll file has corrupted or if the A.V. program is "killing" CFS3 ? Try disabling your A.V. plug_nickel
  13. CFS 3 and OFF won't run

Try this. Put CFS3 Disc 1 in the drive and run it from there. Don't use the icon shortcut. IF CFS3 doesn't initialize or just spins up, run it directly through Windows Explorer. Using Setup, disc 1 should then start up with screen showing Play (light back ground) and Uninstall, Web and Reg (darker back grounds). See if you can start CFS3 using PLAY. IF it starts, just "fly" a few minutes. Don't adjust anything. plug_nickel
  14. CFS 3 and OFF won't run

Starting with CFS3.1: did you run and setup "cfsconfig" file ? plug_nickel

  16. A new show stopper - help requested

You need to download and install MS Dx9.0C Redistributable dated June, 2010. It will fix your problem. It'll update Dx8 to 8.1 which is what you need now and also bring your Dx9 up to date as well. If you're running a later card with current drivers, Dx10 is broken, in that, it has corrupted or eliminated many of the links in Dx8/9. MS finally came out with the June,2010 release to take care of that problem. plug_nickel
  17. A new show stopper - help requested

Did you cross check the OFF dvd on another drive on another computer? It doesn't make sense that the OFF dvd isn't being read unless it's been magnetically damaged somehow. plug_nickel
  18. OT - New HD Setup

There's that "frekkin" word Doc again. I really do like that "f" word. Much better than my "fuped". And after chewing on it for awhile, I agree with you. It really isn't worth the aggravation to setup that scenario and test it. And besides; if the page file is showing a lot of activity whenever you're doing anything on the pc, then something is causing a bottleneck impairing performance. No need to impress me. Yourself and many others on this forum do that naturally just in the "simple" well thought-out discussions on this forum. plug_nickel
  19. OT - New HD Setup

Thanks VP. Pulled out an "old" disc of url's and loaded up a dangerous site : http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/WindowsGeneralWeb/RAMVirtualMemoryPageFileEtc.htm
  20. OT - New HD Setup

I've been thinking (often a very bad thing for me to do according to my wife) about this statement. Here's what I'm thinking about doing. Using Steam Mover to place both Progam/x86 folders on my secondary drive and putting a small, 100MB page file on primary. Then setup some kind of filter/logger to record what's happening in the page file. I'll place the page file as the 9th allocation after Windows. What do you think? Hey Von Paulus, BirDogICT; please chime in. Any suggestions? Filter/logger?
  21. US National debt (in graphic form)

Here's how it looks to me. Figures are the last available and are rounded off. Government books: 1) Income: $2,170,000,000,000.00 2) Proposed Budget: $3,820,000,000,000.00 3) New Debt: $1,650,000,000,000.00 4) National Debt: $14,271,000,000,000.00 5) Last Budget Cut: $38,500,000,000.00 My books: 1) $21,700.00 2) $38,200.00 3) $16,500.00 4) $142,710.00 5) $385.00 Now I can understand why we're not going to be worth a "plug nickel".
  22. A new show stopper - help requested

My money would be on stopping "index services". Even when idle, it's continuously searching for files and consuming resources. Sorry I can't help with .dll file. plug_nickel
  23. OT - New HD Setup

As to the first comment: BYTE me. And for the second one, Thank you. Matt Woodward's assessment makes a whole lot of sense, especially when taking into account an OS's memory leakage rate and its affect on resources. plug_nickel
  24. OT - New HD Setup

I was typing away when your last post hit Parky, so am now only seeing it. I'd pose some questions regarding head reading efficiency, file placement/order, the size of system ram being used, the memory leakage rate of the OS and what the apps code is doing regarding v.c., memory and prefetch. The hd's physical size also enters into the equation. A 300gb single drive is about as "small" a drive I'd recommend using if you're going to setup the drive without much concern regarding app size App S_F static Boot Windows The physical size of the primary app needs to needs to be taken into account if you're at 150-200. You're starting to enter the head's read/write tangent to file placements and platter curvature. This is where the "sweet spot" would come into play. On a Seagate/WD 240gb hd @ 5400 rpm, the "sweet spot" for best performance is around the 2nd migrating to the 3rd track. Don't ask; I dont "fekkin" know why. I don't have the technical training or background to explain why. plug_nickel
  25. OT - New HD Setup

Good question Parky. I've never really conducted any test with a static pagefile on the primary and have a another pagefile, dynamic or static, on the secondary. Interesting. This I may just have to check out one day. Something else to do...thanks. With hd's being so big now, why would you want to setup a static S_F? Why not let the "system" dynamically handle the file? My performance answer to that is consistency. The flight sims I fly will not "use" more than 4gb of memory. So I've setup the S_F file at 8.75gb to incorporate 4gb of memory, system resources, v.c., and best guess as to the leakage rate of the OS. It only makes sense that 8.75gb static reads faster than 1.5, 2x or whatever the OS assigns at any particular time to a track that's dynamically changing. All of my "tests and approaches" to performance start and end with the hard drive(s). If you think about it, the app has to process information along certain pathways and invariably, no matter how fast your other components are, the code has to get off the disk first and invariably, be pulled off of it again. SSD's and VRD's bring just how "good" an apps code is into light, sometimes glaringly. Take for example CoD. I read of all the problems with it and was able to run it on friends pc after I had installed a VRD. The performance was abysmal! In a VRD loaded directly into system ram! Not even late alpha quality. No hardware combo could overcome its initial flaws. I haven't really gotten into delving "deeply" into SSD's because I'm fixated on OCZ's RevoDrive X2. The specs on the throughput for the 450gb card is staggering and so is the price!!! And processing info over the PCI bus makes a lot more sense to me, IF the board has the bandwidth and lanes. I've also learned to check or find out about where the "sweet spot" is on hd's before buying one. And you don't find it in the mfg's specs or marketing venues; only in dedicated hardware forums, however; that's only for pure pursuit of speed for speed's sake. Not really performance oriented IMHO. When I was pursuing performance and speed for its own sake, I'd actually flush the S_F, temp, cache and prefetch to attain the fastest possible throughput. Now I only flush the temp and cache files. I'm intrigued about the small bump in performance when adding the open block at the end of the S_F. WHY? Simply because it happened. My hunch is that it's acting as a hard stop: there's no info beyond this point. Go back to square one. Certainly not clinical nor empirical but it makes sense. For me, "poor" or more appropriately, inconsistent FPS results always leads me to look at the v.c., memory/prefetch and how the info is getting off/on the disk. The hd usually and significantly figures into the "bottleneck" due to rotational speed, head pickup, number of platters, drivers, file placement and file condition, etc. As for calling me "Doc"...please....I'm still trying to understand the nuances that make pagefile and swapfile different. It's like the color white. The spectrum is supposedly void of color, hence white. Well isn't white then a color of void? plug_nickel
