Hell hath no fury than a retired elementary school teacher that can't access Facebook because she can't understand that after troubleshooting, an Intel Wifi driver decided to take a dump. And now for the rest of the story... When she says "Your an idiot", never, ever, ever retort with "Well, you married me". 39 years, 10-1/2 months of marriage can't being to put enough water under that bridge to lessen the inevitable impact. plug_glub-glub_nickel

Simviation has 2 downloads with all the aircraft .xpd files changed courtesy of "the ground crew". See read me. The FOVUp and Dn are radical so as to be able to see primary gauges on the panel with out haveing to pan down (for those that aren't using a TIR. http://www.simviation.com/cfs3panels1.htm plug_nickel ps; these views would probably make Olham do a ground loop...lol...

I've just re-installed FE with expansion pack and all updates. I've tried to download the FE Seasonal Tiles by Jan Tuma, 6x's now. The only files that decompress are 3 small .ini's and that's after error messages. I've decompressed using WinZip, WinRAR and 7-Zip. Going through some of the posts, I see where others have had to download several times before they were successful. I've been using the second mirror because the first throws me out almost immediately. I have my download manager disabled per instructions. I should note that I've downloaded several planes, fm's and effects without any problems. Only this one file is giving me headaches. Any input, guidance would be appreciated. plug_nickel

CFS3 and OFF stopped working
almccoyjr replied to Luther1517's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Well I for one sure as heck hadn't thunk it. Since I use on board sound, I haven't had to play sound technician in years when troubleshooting. What tipped you off? Was it the "black and white page with radio noise?" Just curious. plug_nickel -
Your about the xth person who has stated that "problem" and on several different forums. NaturalPoint has been silent as well regarding sensitivity. That's the primary reason I never went that upgrade route. plug_nickel

It looks to be very tedious, but can be done. You'll have to change the fov entries in the viewui file and as well as those in the xpd files. This link will take you to the how to as posted: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=48615&highlight=field+view plug_nickel

CFS3 and OFF stopped working
almccoyjr replied to Luther1517's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Wow; interesting. I'm running W7 RTM 7600 Build 16385 which is W7 x64 Ultimate before retail release. I run all of the following in C:\ OBDSoftware CFS3.1a w/ Martins copy of original to use w/ FirePower PTO KTCS ETO MAW First Eagales FSX Acceleration X-Plane 9 Wings of Prey IL-2 1946 w/ JSGME Enabler Pacific Fighters Mig Alley w/ BDG_85F Update TrackIR4 Pro FOXY T.A.R.G.E.T I don't install in (x86) or under MS Game folder. The file structure and trees all remain intact. All W7 updates are current as are .Net Framework 3, DX9.0c and MS Visuals C++ 2008. The only program that I haven't been able to install in C:\ is CH Manager. It gives no option but P.F. (x86). Any program that requires a CD to run is done so from an ISO image mounted in a virtual drive. I've uninstalled and re-installed OFF/HiTR and CFS3 several times w/o complaints. I learned the hard way with FSX when I didn't use the cd to uninstall FSX the first time. Boy, what a freaking nightmare!!!!!!! I try to keep every app in C:\ since x64 was introduced. Prior to that, I would install to C:\ and not P.F. if I was given the option. I'm suspecting you may have some reg entry files that weren't correctly overwritten during the re-installs and have subsequently been trashed. CFS3 (and FSX) is very peculiar in that you should always uninstall using CD-1. It'll keep their respective reg entries intact in the various REG_SZ locations. But then again, I might be wrong: mileage does vary greatly when traveling x64 highway. plug_nickel -
Asking the inevitable question..

I'd do the bare minimum. Just remove the stock heatsink, follow directions and reinstall same. I wouldn't invest in an after market cooler until you've verified that the card will work correctly. plug_nickel
-
Download and install SpeedFan to monitor and log all temps. SpeedFan will also monitor other areas of mobo where hard sensors are placed. If you're in the market to get a newer card, you'll need to verify that the card you're going to choose will work correctly with your current PSU. You may also need to upgrade the PSU as well. If you want to try and troubleshoot the 8800GT, then Google some vids on how to remove the heatsink from the 8800gt to replace the T.I.M. Get some cheap plastic gloves. You don't want any oil on any of the surfaces. Use alcohol pads to completely clean the GPU, ram chips and spreaders and then correctly apply Arctic Silver 5 and replace the heatsink. Start up pc and make sure everything is working good then loop a good v.c. benchmark program to stress the card while monitoring temp with SpeedFan. This should quickly induce a hard lockup of the v.c. due to over heat if the card is on its last legs. The v.c may be on its way or the T.I.M. has set and has started to harden and crack. If the latter is true, this will cause a lot of heat transfer resistance between the chips and the heatsink. plug_nickel

OT Thoughts are with you Brisbane.
almccoyjr replied to Flyby PC's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Sorry I haven't posted sooner, but your post just brought up many bad, helpless feelings. My community was hit with flooding back in 9/09. It was catastrophic but the extent to which Brisbane is suffering is so much greater. It makes me sick to this day when I see this happening. God Bless. plug_nickel -
Just one more time please-- then beers for all

Tamper Thank you for the compliment. In my tenure of messing with computers, I have bought one, had one locally built locally with me right along side of the build and am the builder of my current systems. The latter two decisions have been the best investment for me both personally and technically. CWS3SF Just in case you didn't know, Origin was founded by several former employees of Alienware and some of them were responsible for optimizing the system build. That is also one of Digital Storm's strong points. DS's integration of water cooling is also very, very good. Falcon NW has been building systems aimed at the hard core simming genre for a long time and are always ranked high in the standings in magazines and forums. The best advice I'm able to offer is to asses the reputations of the builders and look for the "best bang for the buck" be it buying a system or the components to build one. However, the last part of the equation requires more investment in time, research and learning. The former can be done through forums and the B.B.B. I do now two things; 1) Between any of the top three I've listed from your choices, you won't have buyer's remorse; 2) The very minute you put the "check in the mail", your brand new system will be "obsolete" in 15 minutes because brand spanking new happens every 14. That's silicon life. Good simming to you and hope to see you in the air. plug_nickel -

I need your final approval on my choices
almccoyjr replied to CW3SF's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I will get specific now that others have chimed in. I understand your hesitation to build, but before you "write the check", you REALLY need to go online with some of builders and work some configurations. You really should examine the builder and the "bang for the buck" they offer. Start with Socket 1366 w/x58 chipset, I7***, Ram:6(2-channel) or 8(3 channel), PSU 750 minimum, GTX 5 or ATI 57/58 series. I just took a quick peak and configured a couple of "basic" gaming pcs from Falcon Northwest and Digital Storm. Digital Storm simply blew away FNW on both base, mid and upper end systems in terms of "cost" and components offered. DS is but one of several custom builders. There are several top notch builders that meet the criteria of superb service, product setup and warranty. You should workup a comparison to see who offers similar components to try and asses "best bang for the buck". Another option is to see who you have locally and what they have to offer. The upside to this approach is that often they'll let you "watch" and learn. All you have to do is ask. that will give you a much better understanding of what you just purchased instead of just "turning the Key" and starting. My 5cents worth. plug_nickel -

Unless you're planning on using your pc as power server or are going to invest in the time and software to properly setup a V.R.D. with the 16gb of memory, I'd change to 6(?) or 8 and invest the savings else where. You're on the cusp of the crest just on the downhill side with the 1155 and at the beginning of the wave forming with 1366. When 1366 goes mainstream, just be prepared for any firmware and bios improvements to dramatically wane and then abruptly stop for the 1155 and supported procs. If you're going to stay with the 1155, make sure that SLI is fully PCIe-16x supported and not 8x neutered. USB3 and SATA6 are both excellent as is going with a SSD. Just my thoughts. plug_nickel -

Graphic Card Solutions - Crossfire or one top Card?
almccoyjr replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
You know what buttons to push. Your "modes" comment got me to go back and do some research and shine a brighter light on SVLI. Sorry, ain't letting the "new" acronym go away peacefully. plug_nickel -
I run all sliders @ 5 except for "Terrain Detail" which I have at 3. You asked about "low end" systems. I was once curious to see just how "slow and low" I could run. My cpu is unlocked and I can go down as low as 6x, but wasn't able to run OFF satisfactorily @ 6x. I did this about 1-1/2 years ago. Compared to what many are currently running or building, I do consider my specs to be "lower" end. plug_nickel

Yup, they do sometimes jump to the head of the line. I have been able get them to disengage a couple of times using Wingmen Split "S" command, but it's VERY arbitrary. It must be a precise timing issue when it works or maybe just plain circumstance; don't know. I now just basically do it now for heck of it. Mostly I just give them a quick peppering to let them know "Hey, I was there first!", and fly on. plug_nickel

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo X6800 @ 3.45ghz oc clock Mobo: Evga 680i-SLI FSB 1066 stock Mem: G Skill PC-6400: 8gb locked w/timings @ 4-3-4-9-2T GPU: Evga 8800 GTX stock clock Mon: Sony GDM-FW900 1920 x 1200 32bit OS: W7_64 RTM 7600 Build 16385 w/release license (it has some features not incorporated in W7_64 Ultimate Retail) Same workshop features as NS13Jarhead but w/o FOV setting For the heck of it I tried and was successful running w/7x multiplier = 1.86ghz Sliders were 2-2-2-2-1 Fluid except over airfields. Noticeable slowing but no stuttering. Not concerned with fps when used as primary performance indicator. A whole lot of tweaking just to satisfy my own curiosity; ain't doing it again. plug_nickel

Graphic Card Solutions - Crossfire or one top Card?
almccoyjr replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Thank you. But this discussion may end up costing us both some money. When my curiosity gets peaked, I hit Google and some forums and start digging. Something I just found out at that's taken me completely by surprise was a technical article about games benefiting from SLI, SVLI to be more accurate (hehe). The second card can utilize antialiasing without adversely affecting GPU performance. Nvidia has incorporated a process called SLI-Antialias in 8x, 16x, and for quad cpu's, 32x. It unloads the work to the second card freeing up the primary "SVLI" card. This function is aimed strictly at "older" games that don't support SLI and that are primarily CPU bound! Found much of the info at SLI Zone and when I started to dig into some white papers on current Nvidia drivers. If you can run any game at higher resolutions with better textures and detail without incurring any adverse affect, even without gaining any mythical fps marketing hype, that's a positive performance boost that's worth it, IMO. It looks like my soon to be installed GTX260/216 just might be having company. plug_nickel -
Graphic Problems with Geforce GTX 460
almccoyjr replied to Andy73's topic in WOFF 1 2 3 / UE - General Help
Andy73 It "seems" your initial problems began with the conflict between the SB HD driver and the Nvidia driver. SB has know issues in XP where video and audio drivers conflict. Shoot, SB has driver issues period; great product but their drivers suck. Try temporarily using the on board audio chip. Via and Realtek audio chips have much better results working with Nvidia drivers than SB. Get the current HD audio driver for your ASRock mobo and give it a whirl. Once you've got on board sound working, reset your OFF sliders to where you originally had them and go for several spins. At best, OFF will run as well as before and you'll be one up going back to research the SB problem on some forums. At worse, you'll be where you are now but knowing that the audio portion is not one of the culprits. From experience, I simply quit using SB products long ago; I got quite agitated being a "sound technician" every time I upgraded OS's/audio drivers. I'm using Realtek on board audio and haven't experienced conflicts. Bad sound reproduction yes, but Realtek has stepped up to plate and I now find them more than adequate for gaming. VIA isn't to shabby either.
