Yum, yum, yum! Thanks, I did not know this. I *like* this idea of using a Mig-21UM cockpit! I don't like using the Su-17 pit either...it looks rather like a B-52 cockpit...a bit big looking for a tiny Mig-23 pit. Off to my drawing board again. But I feel better about it. -

Okay, so to everyone- thanks for all the info, 1) So, do we have agreement that *only* the Mig-23S and the Mig-23MS have the radar hood on the instrument panel? 2) All the other Mig-23 versions have the radar on the HUD and no radar hood on the instrument panel? Thanks, -

Great! I'll give you credit of course! So how do we remove the "can" part but leave the pole part of the "gun camera?" I've been away and will get back to all the other excellent posts and suggestions in this thread. -

That is an issue. The later Mig-23 variants still had a pole sticking out in front of the pilot for the (gun camera?)...but no attached can. So I would need to draw a pole somehow or just keep the gun camera there. Note "pole" sticking out in front of the pilot on this late model version with the attached "can" missing. The gunsight *does* have a horizontal "grill" (what is that, anyone?). -

1) They were almost exactly the same (bunch of copy cats). 2) The beautiful Mig-21MF cockpit has already been done and was a base for the early version (not the later one). 3) I am not skilled enough to make a complete cockpit from scratch that is so similar to the Mig-21MF cockpit. 4) The later Mig-23 cockpits dump the radar hood and get a different cockpit with radar "on the HUD" (if you can call the Sovs idea of a HUD). 5) I had a hell of a time, as it was, making the suckers even work with Starfighter 2's 4-5 different HUDs (a month). -
Using radar as a disguise
ordway replied to Slope72's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
In a Mig-23, flying extremely low to your target, is also a great way to fight. You are going so fast, that when you pop up, you can sometimes pick off even F-15s before they can react. -
How long can the weather stay crummy...in QC?
ordway replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
In Denver Colorado, we seem to have had several tornadoes a day for several weeks. We usually get only one a year at the most. Now, we are getting up to six a day! It's getting exciting! -
Ordway's Early MiG Pits -Upgrade/Repair Package
ordway replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - File Announcements
Thanks Kevin, deeply appreciated! Keep converting my cockpits if you have the time. I'm deep into making the six Mig-23 cockpits and their associcated Starfighter2 specific HUDs. "This is a rebulid of Ordway's Early MiG pits for use in ALL the 3rd Wire Series. It's designed for the following aircraft (and/or variants thereof): MiG-15bis (by Pasko) Stock 3rdWire: MiG-17 Fresco-A MiG-17F Fresco-C MiG-19S Farmer-C" -

Late-Mig-23 Cockpit almost finished
ordway posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I have almost finished the late Mig-23,(the Mig-23MLD cockpit). I added quite a few changes compared to the earlier one including a new later MLD HUD from Starfighter 2, a new blue cockpit color and changed the gunsight around to match photos better. I'm also updating the old Mig-23ML cockpit to better reflect photos...inlcluding a visible grill on the gunsight- (To ibetter irridate your food before eating "dillo" in Angola, I sure). So the late Mig-23MLD was quite a cooker too. It was a lighter weight than earlier versions (to dogfight better) and finally added ECM, chaff and flares. The MiG-23MLD was the most advanced version of the Flogger. It had a different identification-friend-or-foe system (IFF), a more advanced missile capability and a distinctive notch in the leading edge of the wing to improve flight characteristics at high angles of attack. They were apparently produced between 1982-85 during the cold war years and would have been available for the "Ronney the Ray-gun" era. The two cockpits compared for download. Older Mig-23ML with "grill" in the gunsight. Later Mig-23MLD with new blue cockpit color and HUD -

Hi Wrench, someone had that same problem and fixed it. I need to look through my files and see how he did it. -

Playing around with the MLD gunsight initially gives this...quite striking really. -

Thanks WLJet!. These are the best photos of Mig-23MLD gunsights I have. I see it looks very different than the earlier gunsights...almost juried rigged looking with the little knobs on the gunsight, etc. -

Okay all you Mig-23 experts out there, Can anyone provide an airplane manual, or photo of a Mig-23 MLD gunsight to tell me whether its gunsight had the grill on the gunsight or not? -
Late-Mig-23 Cockpit almost finished
ordway replied to ordway's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
As they say in the movies, its a radar screen and its sort of on the HUD (which it should be). I don't have the personal capabilities to do it better...and the Mig-23 is not one of my big favorites to give me enough motivation to do the radar from scratch totally on the HUD (if it is even within the capabilities of the SFP1 series engine to begin with). Secondly, apparently, the radar almost never worked in real life...the technology was too advanced for the Sovs for what they were trying to do at the time with the Mig-23. Thirdly, compared to what we had for a later Mig-23 cockpit before, this is a huge improvement and at a quick glance cannot really be distinguished from a real one. The middle row of switches is there in front of your face and you sure would not mistake this cockpit for any other Sov aircraft with its HUD and distinctive switch placings. -
What I said about the end is no spoiler...I didn't even get it right!

Maybe I got lost in the film...but I thought it was an alternate history until Someone help me out here!

I grew up with the orginal series in the '60s and 70's. I saw this film Friday. I loved it and thought it was brilliantly done with lots of humor and tieing the strings together. Uhura was little whack chasing the "pointy eared hobgogglin" around, but it "could have happened" and was great.

New Mig-23 Cockpit repaint
ordway posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
New Mig-23MF Soviet Green cockpit repaint in final stages. I have had several requests for a repaint like this. This is based on Armourdaves's and Sal's cockpit powder blue Mig-23 cockpit. Cockpit switches images were also added as per color photos. -
New Mig-23 Cockpit repaint
ordway replied to ordway's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Looks like the Mig-23P had a radar scope: "Around 500 aircraft were manufactured between 1978-81. The MiG-23P was never exported and served only within the PVO in Soviet service. MiG-23bis. Similar to the MiG-23P except the IRST was restored and the cumbersome radar scope was eliminated because all of the information it provided could be displayed on the new head-up display (HUD). " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiG-23 Wiki can be wrong, too however. I am trying to work with Starfighter 2 on an earlier cockpit (Mig-23P)with a radar scope and his superb HUD. -
I find that the older I get, the better life gets...but I did not think so when I was in my 20s. There seems to be less angst and stress compared to back then. Even though, I am in the scientific field and have been in the middle of a publishing science showing inevitable changes (perhaps overwhelming) headed our way, I take things much more in stride. I have on purposely kept in superb shape (I can do more situps than in my 20s, when I was no slouch). My mind seems much sharper than in my 20s. I have to currently learn reams of information and it comes easier now. I'm not so worried about what everyone else thinks about me and I can navigate socal situations infinitely better than I used to in my 20s. So far in my late 40s, I'm enjoying life much more than I used to, go figure. Haven't you heard of that famous person in their 60s who said, "I would never give up my 60 year old body and brain for my 20 year old body and brain?" So, your best years are ahead!
