Sluf Skins?
navychief replied to Spectre_USA's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Well, I am kinda partial to the Navy "Thingmie" on the side of the A-7! Heh, heh, heh..... U.S. AIR FORCE OATH OF ENLISTMENT I, Zoomie, swear to sign away four years of my useless life to the United States Air Force because I know I couldn't hack it in the Army or the Navy, and because the Marines frighten me. I swear to sit behind a desk and take credit for the work done by others more dedicated than me who take their job seriously. I also swear not to do any form of real exercise, but promise to defend our bike-riding test as a valid form of exercise. I promise to walk around calling everyone by their first name because I know I'm not really in the military and I find it amusing to annoy the other services. I will have a better quality of life than all those around me and will at all times be sure to make them aware of that fact. After completion of my -- snicker -- "basic training," I will be a lean, mean, donut eating, lazy-boy sitting, civilian-wearing-blue-clothes, Chairborne Ranger. I will do no work unless someone is watching me (and it makes me look good), will annoy those around me, and will go home early everyday. I consent to never getting promoted -- EVER -- and understand that all those whom I made fun of yesterday probably will outrank me tomorrow. So help me God. Ai, And Afcad......could Someone Explain It To Me?
navychief posted a topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator
Ok, for months now, I have seen articles posted about "AI" aircraft, and "AFCAD". Could someone explain (in layman's terms, for this old CPO) what AI and AFCAD are all about? There are hundreds of downloads available on AVSIM for AFCAD files for military bases, etc, and they include AI aircraft for realism, etc..... But I have no clue what is involved with installing these files, or how I am supposed to configure them to work with FS. Is there a AFCAD and AI tutorial for "Dummies" available already? Heh, heh, heh,.... Navy Chief -

I have had FS2004 for a few months now, and have yet to understand what the virtual cockpit is for, and how it is used. All I know about it is when I go through the various views I see it, but have NO clue how to look around when in that selection. Come on shipmates, educate me! (Marine Corps types....please try to refrain from the usual wisecracks, heh, heh!) Navy Chief

Virtual Cockpits. How Are They Used?

Hey Dagger Of course I would expect wisecracks, but that's only because folks like me, right? Heh, heh.... NC -

Thanks Boltz I would like to get Track IR someday, but I want to become more skilled at things before I invest the cash. There is so much to learn, and now Patch #2 for SFP1 is almost here! You know, my wife gets more than a little upset about all the time I spend on the computer. She swears I am secretly having chat conversations with women (yeah right, like they would be interested in an old fart like myself). It ain't happenin'. But I do fly a lot on the sims, and when Patch #2 gets here for SFP1, I will be in REAL trouble with the wife. She'll have to pry my fingers off these controllers!!! Keep'em flyin', shipmates! Ai, And Afcad......could Someone Explain It To Me?
navychief replied to navychief's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator
Thanks TG Whew! It still sounds complicated to me. You know how it is when you mess with something the first time? Another question. Is the reason for AI aircraft just for added realism? AI aircraft are not flyable, are they? If so, why the reason for differentiating between AI and other aircraft? As usual, I am probably just making things harder than need be. What I would like to do, some evening, is connect with someone via RW, or TS, and discuss this. Maybe even "walk" me through this. Navy Chief -
Hey Falcon What I do is this: Go to the menu bar at the top, and get to the option for selecting a "New View". Choose the "Top Down" view. That will place in the top left portion of your screen, a small map of the airfield you are on, viewed from the top. Your aircraft will be marked as a red "X". Simply move your aircraft, and follow the taxiways, using the small map. Then, once you are on the runway you want, you can close that Top Down View. Works good for me, and saves having to go all over the darn airfield, looking for the end of a runway. There may be a better way to accomplish this, but hey, I am experimenting! Navychief

I hope I can make it, but not looking good. I flew until 3 AM this morning with two other guys online. A great flight! Two F/A-18s, and a F-14. Flew from Grissom AFB to Fort Campbell, KY, and then to Atlanta. I had to quit at that point, but they gassed up and flew on to the boat. It would be great if participation on the Bio FS2002/FS2004 increases. There are a lot of folks flying out there online, but it is always better to join up with friends, eh? NavyChief

The graphics are impressive in FS9, to be sure. Have not checked it out myself, but the Northern Lights are visible at the right coordinates and altitude! This particular shot was taken at dusk, as I took off from CV-67. Navy Chief

For those of you who have FS2002 or Fs2004, FS Navigator is an excellent addon. It provides a fantastic way to create accurate flight plans, and then execute them. It also has a feature for multiplayer connection, where you can see everyone who is currently on the server, and what their flight plan is. My problem is I cannot get the MP function to work. I am running a Speedstream DSL modem. I am able to connect to MP with FS, but not the FS Navigator. Nothing I have read about this problem has led me to a solution. I was hoping someone in "Bio" land could help me with this. Thanks. NC

The carrier is FD3, and the Corsair is from Alphasim. My favorite carrier-based aircraft to fly is the EA-6B Prowler. Handles very well, and its speedbrakes can slow the aircraft very quickly. As for why the aircraft is so colorful? Well, this particular A-7 is sporting the colors of VA-25, the "Fist Of The Fleet". Back during the Vietnam era, all of the US Navy aircraft were painted colorfully. Nice to look at, but the Corrosion Control workcenters (who painted them) hated it! I will say this, though. The old paint schemes were easier to keep clean. The paint they use now is too darn porous. Very hard to remove dirt and grease. Navy Chief

Hello all. I wanted to express my thanks to everyone here on Bio. I truly enjoy the "conversations" in the forums, the wonderful downloads, the numerous friendships made, and the knowledge I have gained from such great people! Merry Christmas to all, and Happy Holidays too! This is a difficult time of year for me. Both of my parents have long since passed on, and my two sisters live up in Indianapolis; a 10 hour drive. But there's always email, and the great folks on Bio. Enjoy the holidays, and keep'em flying! As always, Go Navy! Navy Chief

Ok, I finally found a decent 3rd Party panel for the DC-9, and installed it per instructions. Unfortunately, the panel is designed for FS2002, but that's ok for now. The aircraft I wanted it for is the Navy C-9. After installing the panel, I started FS2002, and selected the C-9. Almost immediately, I got a msg, saying that 3rd Party software was detected, and that I could continue using FS2K2, but that the particular aircraft I had selected would not work. GRRRRRR!!! I know there is a way to "alias" the panel to some other aircraft in FS2K2, or something like that, but I haven't a clue how to do it. I know I use Notepad to open a file to make the mod, but I don't understand exactly what to do. Anyone out there have the patience to talk me through this? Thanks. Navy Chief

Ok, after seeing this list, I need to know something. What the heck does "Bump" mean, when that is the only thing written in a post? I have been meaning to ask that. Navy Chief

The Little Red Hen A new look at an old story -- =================================== Once upon a time, on a farm in Arkansas, there was a little red hen who scratched about the barnyard until she uncovered quite a few grains of wheat. She called all of her neighbors together and said, "If we plant this wheat, we shall have bread to eat. Who will help me plant it?" "Not I," said the cow. "Not I," said the duck. "Not I," said the pig. "Not I," said the goose. "Then I will do it by myself," said the little red hen. And so she did; The wheat grew very tall and ripened into golden grain. "Who will help me reap my wheat?" asked the little red hen. "Not I," said the duck. "Out of my classification," said the pig. "I'd lose my seniority," said the cow. "I'd lose my unemployment compensation," said the goose. "Then I will do it by myself," said the little red hen, and so she did. At last it came time to bake the bread. "Who will help me bake the bread?" asked the little red hen. "That would be overtime for me," said the cow. "I'd lose my welfare benefits," said the duck. "I'm a dropout and never learned how," said the pig. "If I'm to be the only helper, that's discrimination," said the goose. "Then I will do it by myself," said the little red hen. She baked five loaves and held them up for all of her neighbors to see. They wanted some and, in fact, demanded a share. But the little red hen said, "No, I shall eat all five loaves." "Excess profits!" cried the cow. "Capitalist leech!" screamed the duck. "I demand equal rights!" yelled the goose. The pig just grunted in disdain. And they all painted "Unfair!" picket signs and marched around and around the little red hen, shouting obscenities. Then a government agent came, he said to the little red hen, "You must not be so greedy." "But I earned the bread," said the little red hen. "Exactly," said the agent. "That is what makes our free enterprise system so wonderful. Anyone in the barnyard can earn as much as he wants. But under our modern government regulations, the productive workers must divide the fruits of their labor with those who are lazy and idle." And they all lived happily ever after, including the little red hen, who smiled and clucked, "I am grateful, for now I truly understand." But her neighbors became quite disappointed in her. She never again baked bread because she joined the "party" and got her bread free. And all the Democrats smiled. 'Fairness' had been established. Individual initiative had died but nobody noticed; perhaps no one cared, as long as there was free bread. Bill Clinton is getting $12 million for his memoirs. His wife Hillary got $8 million for hers. That's $20 million for memories from two people who For eight year s repeatedly testified, under oath, that they couldn't remember anything. God Bless America! Ain't it the truth, folks? Navy Chief

Ok, I resisted the urge to reply, but you asked for it! You know the reason why the Marines were created, don't you? We (the US Navy) needed dance partners. Heh, heh, heh.... Navy Chief

I can tell you with personal experience, that getting backseat rides is definitely NOT a quick process. Back in the early 1970s (the Stone Age), you had to go through a Flight Physical, Swim Test, Pressure Chamber Test, and classroom instruction, which included a ride on a ejection seat simulator. The simulator was a actual ejection seat on a rail, which was pneumatically shot up a rail. It was the equivalent of a 1/4 charge of the real ejection process. Even if you could get all of the requirements done in sequence, it would take three separate weeks. It took me almost three months to finish, because enlisted non-aircrew types were (and still are, I am sure) the very LAST priority for completion of such tests. Getting on the list for the tests was on a standby basis. I went through all of the requirements twice in my career. Once, when I was stationed at Pax River in the 70s, and then again, when stationed at NAS Cecil Field, FL. in the early 80s. My last ride was in a F/A-18D in 1985. It is even harder, nowadays, to get "joyrides". Funding is very tight for training, and if there is an empty seat, you can rest assured a pilot in need of training will be in it. Navy Chief
