As most of you folks know, I am trying real hard to obtain DSL service again. So far, I am outta luck. Seems as though the companies responsible for installing it don't believe the area where I live warrants it. Well, I am not giving up just yet, but wondered if I could even have any success at all, using a dialup connection? Let me know what you think, shipmates. I know you will! Navy Chief

"Flying" online with a dialup connection.
navychief replied to navychief's topic in Hardware/Software Chat
It worked, it worked!!!! Not only that, but BETTER than when I flew with DSL!! Except for a annoying 15 second delay, using Teamspeak2, everything worked fantastic! Even my FSNavigator worked wonderful, and showed everyone in the flight, and their information. There were 14 of us! I flew four hops with them. I am SO glad you replied PG! I am back in the air. GO NAVAIR. Navychief -
Strange also, to me at least, how it is easy to say, "That sort of thing never happens where I live." But it could so easily. Tragedies strike anywhere, anytime. It is a horrible thing. Without my faith in God, ....well, I would be lost. God have mercy on those poor souls. Navy Chief

Robert O. Jackson, SR., of Indianapolis, IN, passed away this morning at age 86. He was my Uncle Bob, and I will miss him so much. He wasn't "just" my uncle. Captain R.O. Jackson SR. was, at one time, the CO of the USNR for the state of Indiana. During WW2, he was assigned to the USS Mustin (DD413), USS Sigourney (DD643), and the USS Montour (AGC101). The USS Mustin participated in the battle for Midway Island. The Mustin, along with the USS Anderson, shot torpedoes into the USS Hornet to sink her, after rescuing all survivors onboard from the attacks of the Japanese. He was also there for the Battle for Guadalcanal. He was my strongest supporter when I decided to join the United States Navy in 1972. He gave the oath of Enlistment at my swearing-in ceremony at the Heslar Naval Armory in Indianapolis. And, over twenty years later, upon my retirement from the Navy in April of 1997, Uncle Bob put on his uniform, and officated my retirement ceremony at the same location. That meant the world to me. His wife, (my Aunt Sally), survives him. Captain Robert O. Jackson, SR., will be buried (date TBA) at Arlington National Cemetery. I will be there, in uniform, to bid my Uncle farewell. He was my hero. Merry Christmas, shipmates, Please have my Uncle in your prayers ok? And my Aunt Sally, and their two sons too, as I know they are hurting. Navy Chief

How do I add downloaded Flt plans?
navychief replied to navychief's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator
Hi Charlie I did just that, the first time I downloaded one. The flight I put in that folder showed up on the list, but nothing happens when I try to choose it. Maybe you could download a flight from that site, and try it yourself? Thanks. Pete -
Well, I put together my simpit this evening. You must understand what an achievement this is for me. I know virtually nothing about building things; especially from wood. I have a tendency to measure incorrectly, and what projects I have attempted in the past, have been screwed up for just that reason. But this time I succeeded! Except for a few adjustments with the jigsaw, it all went together perfectly! All I need to do now is paint it, and get some comfortable cushions. I received my new gaming system on the 15th, and am in the process of loading all my games. Now, if only I can somehow get DSL again! I will post a picture of my simpit once it is painted, and all is set up. It is from the Akers-Barnes design. No screws or bolts. It all fits together with slots. Neat, eh? Navy Chief

Thanks for the shout, Nick. Have a safe but happy trip. I look forward to seeing the cartoon. Cat and all the kitties are fine. "ChieF" is recovering nicely from his latest and last knee surgery. He is quite a dog. Rottweiler is such a special breed. NC

Hey Scout, Heck, I don't need a fancy helmet to do that. I know how to turn on the "Ignore" option whenever it's necessary. Kinda like when I was on acive duty, and an Airman would say, "Hey Chief, can I have the day off?" Instant ignore....heh, heh, heh.... NC

Congratulations, Skater! Navy Chief

The "bang" seat works when my wife threatens bodily harm to me if I don't quit flying on the computer! NC

I'm here to tell ya it is "Chief proof"! Listen, if I can build this....ANYONE can. NC
-
Hey PG! Yah, I know it doesn't even come close to resembling a full-scale mockup. I knew that from the beginning! I chose this design because it looked like something I could actually build. The simplicity of the design is great, because there are NO screws or bolts. It's portable, and very comfortable to sit in! I don't know if I would ever want to spend the money on creating a full-scale mockup. However, I might try to enclose my simpit somehow. That would be cool. But for now, when I turn the room lights off, it is realistic enough for this old fart. Go Navy. NC

Ok, here's a picture of my simpit. I plan to paint it (Naval Aviation colors, of course!). Probably brighter colors than the drab paint schemes of today. None of that "tactical grey" crap. Am working on installing more cushions, especially for my neck. All in all, though, it is VERY comfortable to sit in. The joystick and throttle are at the perfect angle. So whaddya all think, eh? NC

I will get some pictures posted tomorrow. No problem. NC It is the only way to fly!! Seriously! I can't afford real flight lessons, and this is great!
-
Thanks for the votes of confidence, shipmates! I will see about getting some digital pictures of it soon. Only thing I really need for it now is a back cushion. For those of you who are contemplating making one, I highly recommend it. It makes the flying oh, so much more real!! NC

I am looking forward to this one. Check the pictures out at: http://flightinfo.ens.ne.jp/FS_KBT/d_y_a.htm By the way, I ordered Wings Over Vietnam off of Amazon.com tonight! Navy Chief

WOV Catapult sound.
navychief posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I currently do not have WOV loaded on my system. I removed it, and reinstalled SFP1. However, in the brief time I DID have the sim installed, I tried a few cat shots, and noticed there was no sound at all for the cat shot itself. Should there be? In a few days, when I receive my new system, I will be loading all the sims I have. I am currently building a simpit based on the Akers-Barnes plans that I downloaded from their site. Now then, you must know that I am NOT at all good at carpentry. So if this project works out, it will truly be a first!!! The picture is of the USS Independence, taken off the coast of Grenada, when we "took care of business" there. I was onboard, attached to VA-15 (Valions). Fly NAVY! Navy Chief -
Sorry about the multi-posts about the catapult sound. The dialup connection I have is shaky, to say the least; and it refused to show confirmation that my message had posted. NC

I was watching tv, and looked out the window to see this beautiful sunset. My wife took the picture. Have a great week, shipmates. Btw, for those of you who have read my posts about my dog, "Chief"? Well, we are taking him up to Knoxville, TN early this Thursday morning for his fourth and final operation. This time, they will repair his right knee. His left one was fixed this past July. Now he'll be all ok, and able to run and play like a Rottie should in a few weeks! Go Navy. Navy Chief

I would have probably made an attempt at entering this contest, 'cept for one thing. Dialup. Don't get me wrong; I am SO glad to at least be able to get online, get email, etc... But downloading and uploading files with dialup is, for the most part, a waste of time. The most I can usually get is 42 Kbps on a good day. Maybe next time, MJ. If I can get DSL again, I'll try entering the contest. Maybe some carrier cats and traps! Go Navy! NC

A-7E skins
navychief posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I know that C5 has a few A-7A/B, and (2) A-7E skins. At the peak of the A-7E's service with the USN, there were 22 squadrons! Am hoping there are more A-7E skins out there. Anyone know? Navy Chief P.S. Any news on the release of the new P-3 for FS2004 yet? -
Congratulations! Or is it Condolences????? Oh whatevver,..... try Sam's Club. Better yet, your local pawn shop, and don't tell her! NC

Thanks to a fellow shipmate on Bio, I am back online again, and able to visit my favorite site (Biohazard Central, of course!). I won't divulge my friend's name. If he wants to post a message about it, then fine! But suffice it say, I am forever grateful for the modem, and access to email again. For now, I am on dialup, so online flying won't be happening. But just to be able to visit Bio, and receive email again, is a Godsend. I've missed you all! DA Navy Chief is BACK! NC

Hey Nick, Thanks for the "welcome back" message! Enjoyed the pictures. I look forward to flying them. Hopefully, by the end of next week, I will have my new Gaming PC. I spent more than I ever have on a computer. Too bad I don't have DSL. Online flying just won't work too well. I plan to start hounding the closest cable company to run a line to my house. Maybe they'll do so, just to shut me up! You know how persistent Navy Chief's can be! HA! NC
