ghostrider883 posted a topic in Military and General Aviation
A press note from MiG: IAF’ s MiG-29s To Be Upgraded by RAC ‘MIG’ The MiG-29 fleet of the IAF will be upgraded by RAC ‘MiG’. A contract for the upgrade was signed by the Russian manufacturer and the Ministry of Defence today 7th March. The upgrade of the whole fleet of the IAF’s MiG-29s will include a top-notch avionics suite which is a feature of the ship-borne MiG-29K/KUB fighters being serially produced for the Indian Navy. The overhaul and retrofitting of the aircraft will extend their service life to 3,500 flight hours and 40 years. The avionics modernization of the aircraft will considerably expand the range of missions of the IAF’s MiG-29 fighters. At present the MiGs are primarily intended for intercepting aerial targets and gaining air superiority. Besides the broadened aerial potential, the upgraded aircraft will acquire the ability to strike ground (sea-surface) mobile and stationary targets with high-precision weapons under all weather conditions. Complete updating of the onboard data and sighting systems will include fitment of state-of-the-art multifunctional radar Zhuk-ME, an advanced onboard computing complex, a new weapon control system, an optronic station based on space technologies and colour multifunctional displays in the cockpit Armament upgrade of the IAF’s MiG-29s will include such most modern weaponry as substantially improved air-to-air missiles, high-accuracy guided missiles to destroy ground and sea surface targets and smart aerial bombs. The retrofitted MiG-29s’ avionics suite will include a number of up-to-date systems developed and produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., Bharat Dynamics Ltd., and some foreign companies. The first 6 fighters are to be upgraded and flight-tested in Russia. The overhaul and modification of the balance aircraft will be carried out in India at IAF aircraft repair facilities utilizing the equipment kits supplied by RAC ‘MiG.’ The contract includes an offset clause covering approximately 30% of the contract value. As part of the offset, RAC ‘MiG’ will set-up consignment depots and service centres for MiG fighters, service centres specializing in maintenance and repair of the Zhuk family radars and simulators centres equipped with the top-notch training aids. With the transfer to HAL of the licence for production the RD-33 series 3 engines India will acquire the infrastructure for the MiG-29 family fighters’ indigenous maintenance, repair/overhaul and upgrade. Should the Indian Air Force select the state-of-the-art MiG-35 fighter to meet its MMRCA requirement, all the key technologies including AESA radar manufacturing will be transferred to HAL. All possible assistance will be extended for serial production of the MiG-35 by HAL which has already successfully mastered the production of the MiG-21, MiG-27 and Su-30MKI combat aircraft. Other leading aviation companies of India will also be invited to participate in indigenous production of the MiG-35. Asked about his views on the upgrade of the MiG-29, Air Marshal Harish Masand (Retd), one of the finest fighter pilots who commanded the first MiG-29 squadron(No. 28 'First Supersonics') in 1986, said,” The MiG-29 was always a superlative fighter and with the upgrade it will have unmatched capabilities”. -

USS Trenton/INS Jalashwa Accident Ridden?
ghostrider883 posted a topic in Military and General Aviation
The INS Jalashwa met with an accident killing 5 sailors on board. Was doing a bit of research on the Trenton and found this June 28, 1971 off Guantanamo Bay, Cuba A steam valve in TRENTON's number two engine room ruptured, killing four sailors instantly and severely injuring six others. The injured men were "medevaced" first to Guantanamo Bay and thence to the burn ward of the Army Hospital at Fort Sam Houston, TX. There, two of the six subsequently died as a result of their injuries. TRENTON returned to Guantanamo Bay for interim repairs and then made her way back to Norfolk on one engine, arriving on July 6, where repairs were completed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. January 17, 1977 Barcelona, Spain An LCM-6 from TRENTON carrying marines and sailors from shore back to TRENTON and USS GUAM (LPH 9), collided with a merchant vessel which was entering the port of Barcelona. The LCM-6 capsized. 49 servicemen were killed in the accident. April 27, 1981 Alexandria, Egypt During a five-day port visit, the USS TRENTON and USS JACK (SSN 605) are slightly damaged when the JACK, moored alongside, surges against the TRENTON in a sea swell. TRENTON was decommissioned on January 17, 2007, at Norfolk, Va., and transfered to the Indian Navy. For the following months US Navy sailors trained their Indian counterparts in the handling of the ship. On June 22, 2007, the ex-TRENTON was officially recommissioned as INS JALASHWA at Norfolk, Va. February 01, 2008 : An accident during a Navy Exercise killing five Indian Navy sailors. Details are sketchy.Navy denies that one of the boilers burst. RIP Brave souls. -

USS Kitty Hawk for the Indian Navy?
ghostrider883 replied to ghostrider883's topic in Military and General Aviation
Yeah, the officials go and enjoy the russian hospitality & vodka, while the Navy gets screwed . Blindly agreeing to what the Russkies is madness!!!!!! The Vikrant is supposed to be ready for sea trials by 2012. Funny that Gorky will also be ready by then. Only bright spot is that RAC MiG annnouced that the MiG-29K/KUBs will be delivered as per schedule in June this year. The pilots will get to practice Short take offs and landings at one of the NASs before the carrier arrives . In a related development, One of the upgraded Indian Kilo class class submarines is stuck in Russia, The Navy has refused ot accept it because its weapons failed to hit targets during trials. -

USS Kitty Hawk for the Indian Navy?

India, Russia finalise new deal on Gorshkov Nitin Gokhale Tuesday, February 26, 2008 ( New Delhi) India and Russia have finalised a new deal for the aircraft carrier, the Gorshkov. According to the sources, under the new deal that was hammered out over the weekend, India will pay more for the aircraft carrier. But in return, the Russians will put in several new parts instead of repairing them as agreed upon in the original contract. The aircraft carrier was to be delivered by August this year according to a contract signed in 2004 but Russia stunned India in November by demanding more money. Russia had asked for $ 1.2 billion more for refitting and other works. NDTV learnt over the weekend that India and Russia agreed on a new deal that will hopefully see the carrier with the Indian navy by 2012. Now, India will pay possibly up to 800 million dollars more than the original price of 1.2 billion dollars. For the extra money, the Russians have now agreed to: * Put in a new arrestor gear for the planes * Build a new ski jump for the MiG-29Ks * Install new boilers in the engine room * And lay new cables, estimated at 2,400 km <something sounds fishy here..... these were supposed to be installed earlier as per the original contract to make the carrier MiG-29K compatibe...the Gorky was a helo/Yak-38 carrier > How much extra India will pay will be decided in March after two more rounds of negotiations take place. Top Indian Navy officers say even if India pays additional 700-800 million dollars for the new Gorshkov, it will still be worth the cost since a new carrier will cost more than Four billion dollars. -
Indian Air Force inducts AJT Hawk into active service
ghostrider883 replied to BUFF's topic in Military and General Aviation
Hawk-132 is also equipped with several Indian components such as the communication sets, identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system and the radio altimeter. In addition to being an AJT, the Hawk-132 is fully combat capable and can carry air-to-air missile and air-to-ground strikes. It can also be used as a lightweight fighter. The contract for the supply of the Hawk AJT was signed between the IAF and BAE Systems in 2004. The deal envisaged a supply of 66 aircraft. The Bidar airfield, which is located in northwest Karnataka, will serve as the main operating base for the Hawk. This base has been a training establishment for trainee IAF pilots since 1963. The airfield which was home to the IAF's Suryakiran aerobatic display team had undergone a Rs.1.20 billion refurbishment to enable it accommodate the Hawks. India would be the third biggest customer for Hawks, closely following in the footsteps of the British Royal Air Force and the South African Air Force. The Hawk is in worldwide operation with 800 plus aircraft in use by 17 customers and 22 armed forces. The trainers have generated over 1.5 million flight hours in experience. The Hawk-132 is a variant of the highly successful BAE Systems Hawk AJTs. It incorporates an open architecture mission computer, glass cockpit and a state of the art avionics suite including a new generation Inertial Navigation System with GPS. Speaking on the occasion Antony promised to give a new look and modernisation to the IAF within next two years. IAF will acquire 40 more Hawks, intermediate jet trainers, Aerosat radars and unmanned aerial vehicles, he said. He was positive about allocation of adequate funds to the defence in 2008-09 budget and said that US Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet and Lockheed Martin F-16, the Russian MiG-35, the Swedish Grippen, the French Rafaele, and the Eurofighter Typhoon built by a European consortium are the aircrafts in the fray. The induction came four months after the IAF, one of the oldest air forces in the world, celebrated its 75th anniversary. This is also the first induction of aircraft since the fourth-generation Sukhoi SU-30MKI joined the IAF fleet in 2001. The IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major, and the British High Commissioner to India Richard Stagg were among those who attended the ceremony. -

Indian Air Force inducts AJT Hawk into active service
ghostrider883 replied to BUFF's topic in Military and General Aviation
BIDAR(Karnataka): After a mind-boggling delay of 26 years, which exemplifies India's tortuous defence procurement policies , the IAF on Saturday finally inducted the British Hawk AJTs (advanced jet trainers) to train its rookie pilots on the intricacies of flying combat fighter jets. The AJTs will help the young pilots bridge the quantum jump from flying sub-sonic aircraft like HPT-32 and Kiran trainers to directly handling the supersonic 'highly-unforgiving' MiG-21s, without any transitional training to improve inadequate flying skills, the norm in IAF till now. Considering that there have been over 700 crashes recorded by IAF since 1970, with around 180 pilots losing their lives and scores of civilians being killed on the ground, and that almost half of them were blamed on "human error", proper training to young pilots to hone their combat flying skills is certainly the need of the hour. "With the induction of AJTs now, it's expected that existing gaps in the transitional training of our young pilots will get adequately plugged," said defence minister A K Antony, who formally inducted the first eight Hawks into service at this airbase. Acknowledging the huge delay, the minister said there were several constraints, like lack of funds and slow decision-making, in the past. "But now, things are moving fast. The government is determined to give full support to the modernization of the armed forces," he added. Under the Rs 8,000-crore AJT project, finalized in March 2004, IAF will receive 66 twin-seater Hawks — 24 in 'flyaway condition' from BAE Systems, with the other 42 to be manufactured indigenously by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd under transfer of technology — in batches by 2011. That's not all. As reported by TOI earlier, the defence ministry has now approved the induction of another 40 Hawks for the IAF after that, with the Navy also getting 17 of them for its own aircraft carrier-based fighter training. In all, this will mean 123 Hawks. And they certainly do not come cheap, each costing around Rs 85 crore. But apart from their sheer usefulness in training rookie pilots, they can also be used as ground attack or air defence aircraft in times of war, capable as they are of carrying 6,800 pounds of weapons, rockets, bombs and air-to-air missiles. The progressive induction of the Hawks will, of course, mean the curtains for the ageing MiG-21 trainers, with older training establishments at Tezpur, Bhuj, Jamnagar and Nalia already in the process of being disbanded. "IAF has long needed a link between basic trainers and advanced fighters like Sukhoi-30MKIs, Mirage-2000s, Jaguars and MiGs. The Hawk will bridge this gap effectively," said IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major. Group captain Michael Fernandez, the chief instructor at the Bidar airbase, added, "Around 40 pilots will be trained here on the Hawks every year beginning from July, flying around 160 hours in two semesters, coupled with training on advanced simulators." In effect, after receiving Stage 1 and 2 training on HPT-32s and Kirans for a year, newly-commissioned pilots will now learn tactical flying, night-flying, air combat manoeuvring and air-to-ground bombing on the AJTs, without being directly made to fly advanced supersonic fighters. -
