Russian Jets
JediMaster replied to chrislancaster01's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Actually, I think the problem is that the stock planes are all designed to work with each other while the 3rd party planes are designed to be as real as possible given the patch level at the time of their release. Many planes are now 1 or more patches behind, and this makes them behave differently, either in absolute terms or at least WRT the stock planes. -

Funny you should mention asking for permission to use Dee Dee Dee, as Mencia is so known in comedy circles for ripping off other people's stuff he's known as "Carlos Menstealia". That said, his show is funny and I have both seasons on DVD. I never get to catch it live, though. That's ok, uncensored is better. -

MiG-31 Firefox
JediMaster replied to ValAstur's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Of course the real 31 was just a redone 25, but I remember some early DoD "impressions" of the MiG-29 looked like a cross between the real 29 and 31. That plane of course never was made. The real 29 surprised a lot of people, as did the Su-27. I was impressed with one aspect of the Firefox design, though, and that was that they kept MiG's signature tailfin design. Put it in a sideview comparison with a real Flogger, Foxbat, Foxhound, or Fulcrum and it's the same tailfin. -
I've got the 1.04 patch, had it since release. Have LWAMI but haven't installed it yet, mainly because I play MP with a couple of guys from time to time and as soon as you mod you need to worry about MP. Not sure if LWAMI is one of those "everyone has to have it" types or not. Which sound mod are you referring to? Subguru has this listing: DW_AMBIENT_SOUND_MOD_MAIN_MENU_FULL.rar (21 meg) DW_AMBIENT_SOUND_MOD_Normal.rar (30 meg) DW_AMBIENT_SOUND_MOD_High.rar (30 meg) DW_AMBIENT_SOUND_MOD_eHigh.rar (30 meg) Audio/SFX (26 meg) Interfaces/SSN21 (17 meg) Interfaces/688I (17 meg) Interfaces/AkulaII (22 meg) Interfaces/FFG (11 meg) Interfaces/MH60 (3 meg) Interfaces/P3 (6 meg) Do you mean ALL of them, or just one of them? I honestly don't have as much time in DW as I'd like, maybe 30 hours, so I've not run into that desire to mod it to the hilt I've had with some past games.

The UK version was "killing you"? I'm not sure what that means! I've got a copy of the German DVD patched to 1.05 which allows playing in any language (just change language= in the .cfg file) and it's great. We have found a line or two in the profile file WRT enemy abilities--enemySkill and enemy Precision. The first is how smart they are, the 2nd is how well they shoot. By default, both start at .85. That is pretty much godlike. I've got mine lowered to about .33 and the game is so much more enjoyable as you live longer. You might think that at 1/3 of max they'd be a pushover, but far from it. I find it a decent challenge now. Maybe one day I'll push it all the way up to .5!

Il-2/Luft 46 package
JediMaster replied to ST0RM's topic in IL-2 Series / Pacific Fighters / Cliffs of Dover: General Discussion
If you got the digital DL of the final version, it has everything but the copies of the older games, which are on the 2nd DVD. As for the individual ones, I don't know. I never went that route (DLing Pe-2, DLing Sturm, DLing 46) so I can't say one way or another if you could skip or if getting one included others. -
Wheel brakes damped suspension in the A-10
JediMaster replied to Hildo's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
You say WOE, but you posted in the LOMAC forum. Which sim are you referring to? In LOMAC there is some cockpit/gear movement when applying the brakes, but it's nowhere near as well modeled as the 2 Su-25s have it with their AFM's. In WOE, the ground handling is far simplified because the developer didn't have the resources to devote to everything, and instead certain areas were concentrated on while others, such as MP and ground handling, were left minimal. -
The Jane's games are all very old now, the last was released in 2000 I think. You may have to go to ebay or find someone willing to sell their old copy somewhere to get a hold of them. As for those 2 you listed, well, you've picked the hardest prop sim and hardest jet sim available to start with! For training, they both come with training missions that are very good actually. Spend time with them until you can do them like clockwork. For the record, I got F4 in 1998 and Il-2 in 2001 and I'm still pretty bad at both of them.

My wife has watched a few of these but she always gets upset at them. "They totally missed that, right there!" "How can they expect to find anything clunking and banging around like that? Why can't they move around quietly??"

I'm always behind on comics. I always only find out about them well after their publication and then they get hard to find.

Starfleet Command 1 and 2 were probably the closest to thing to SFB the PC ever saw or will see. They had their flaws, but worked pretty good. SFC3 took a major step backwards in everything but graphics and a move to the TNG/DS9/Voyager era instead of classic. Big shame. Legacy is the continuation of that lineage but with some big changes that make it pretty much a challenge to find any similarities to SFB except in the idea of having your own fleet of starships to fight other starships. It also covers every era of ST ever done, while other games have always been one era only.

one of the best looking screen shots I've ever seen
JediMaster replied to Dagger's topic in Star Trek Legacy
I've been rewatching TNG on DVD lately, on season 6 now, and that looks like a shot worthy of the show. -
Yes, that site has a link to the site I was thinking of, xwaupgrade! I WILL get to do that someday. Too bad the only SW games on the horizon now are announced for consoles only.

Baltar never saw the Final Five. D'Anna did, then she died before she could tell Baltar anything. He tried to follow her, but it didn't work and then Tyrol captured him. He doesn't know. Also, notice how the Four we now know are all people in important positions? The CO's XO, the president's aide, the head of the bays/ships? Only Sam wasn't, although he did for awhile get in with Starbuck. As for where things are going, only Ron Moore seems to know.

No idea here, but this a prime reason I'm sticking to air cooling. The very idea of water cooling scares me!

That doesn't make any sense. The "official" story is going to contradict footage already seen?

Unfortunately, info seems hard to come by. However, we'll likely have volunteers to do a review ASAP.

I remember in the Armada games it was only moderately useful. Never played Dominion Wars as I heard nothing positive about it. I think it was in SFC3 but totally underwhelming there. It was originally designed to fight the Borg, but got pressed into service at DS9 and in the Dominion War. Only in the beginning of First Contact do we see it doing what it was built for.

In the book "The Sixth Battle" they do indeed retrofit Bones with Slammer capability and use a flight of them to take out a massive Russian force. The Russians are dumbstruck because F-16s couldn't have reached them where they were, yet that's what their RWRs are telling them are attacking them! -

Contrails may happen at high altitudes. The U-2 had a rear-view mirror expressly for that purpose--to see if one was being generated so the pilot could do something about it! -
