AOA is controlled by the combination of pitch (how high the nose is pointing) and power (how much thrust the engine is producing). It's like balancing a teeter totter. Most flight training teaches the student that to land speed is controlled by aircraft pitch and descent rate is controlled by power. If you need to slow down, raise the nose. If you need to speed up, lower the nose. If you need to descend faster, decrease engine thrust. If you are descending too fast increase engine thrust. It sounds bacwards but that is how it works. With a little practise it becomes second nature like breathing.

Ok first, this was a quick edit I did for a Blue Angels F/A-18 skin I started about a year ago. It is functional, but not cosmetically correct comm menu wise. You may need the SFP1E Extract tool here ======> http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autom...mp;showfile=343 First look in your flight folder for the following files, if they are not there you must extract them from the FlightData.CAT file using the SFP1E tool. You'll need the FORMATION.INI and COMMDATA.INI files to work on. Back up the originals if they are already in your flight folder. If you don't like the edited ones all you do is delete what wasn't in the flight folder to begin with and restore the backup of what was. First the Formation.ini these are the sections I edited [FormationType001] Name=USFighter BaseLevel=2 Level[01].Name=Squadron Level[01].Size=4 Level[01].Formation[01]=SqTrail Level[01].Formation[02]=SqLineAbrest Level[01].Formation[03]=SqEchelonLeft Level[01].Formation[04]=SqEchelonRight Level[02].Name=Flight Level[02].Size=2 Level[02].Formation[01]=Finger-Four <==== new formation added to 1st formation key assignment Level[02].Formation[02]=Diamond <==== new formation added to 2nd formation key assignment Level[02].Formation[03]=Box Level[02].Formation[04]=Arrowhead Level[02].Formation[05]=Wedge Level[02].Formation[06]=Wall Level[02].Formation[07]=Fluid-Four Level[03].Name=Element Level[03].Size=2 Compare the original with what I have above and you'll see I kept, but rearranged the more useful formations Next further down the Formation.ini, the positions of the individual aircraft in relation to the lead must be specified I just added these to the end of the aircraft formation section. I'm including the delta in the edit, but I never got it to work. [uSBomberFl] Position[01].Offset= 0, 0, 0 Position[02].Offset= -200, -100, 20 Position[03].Offset= 400, -200, 40 Position[04].Offset= 600, -300, 60 [DIAMOND] Position[01].Offset= 0, 0, 0 Position[02].Offset= 15, -7, -7 Position[03].Offset= -15, -7, -7 Position[04].Offset= 0, -14, -14 [Finger-Four] Position[01].Offset= 0, 0, 0 Position[02].Offset= 20, -7, 1 Position[03].Offset= -20, -7, 1 Position[04].Offset= -40, -14, 2 [DELTA] Position[01].Offset= 0, 0, 0 Position[02].Offset= 10, -7, -5 Position[03].Offset= -10, -7, -5 Position[04].Offset= 0, -14, -10 Position[05].Offset= -20, -14, -10 Position[06].Offset= 20, 14, -10 Now that you've specified the formation and the aircraft positions time to edit the command menu so you can use them. Open the CommData.ini and find the section [Menu009] [Menu009] Name=FltFormationSubmenu1 Text=COMM_TXT_SUB_FORMATION Item[001].Text=COMM_TXT_SPREAD_OUT Item[002].Text=COMM_TXT_CLOSE_UP Item[003].Text=COMM_TXT_FINGER_FOUR <==== ADD THIS Item[004].Text=COMM_TXT_Diamond <==== ADD THIS Item[005].Text=COMM_TXT_Box Item[006].Text=COMM_TXT_ARROWHEAD Item[007].Text=COMM_TXT_WEDGE Item[008].Text=COMM_TXT_FLUID_FOUR Item[009].Text=COMM_TEXT_BACK Item[009].Menu=Flight1Submenu Item[009].CommandNum=10 Item[009].ExtraSpace=TRUE These entries I chose to place after the spread-out and close-up commands but I don't think those two commands work anyway, so you may choose to replace them and see what happens. You might end up with two new formations without rearranging and disabling others. Enjoy -

Sounds great Sixgun!! I'll be looking forward to this too! Sorry I didn't reply sooner I've been at work the last few days. -
Sorry it's taken a couple of days to reply. I've been at work. I run a 2002 vintage Dell Dimension XPS 4500 Pentium 4 with stock 2GB processor, 2GB PC3200 DDR ram, Win XP Pro, PNY Verto GeForce 6600 AGP 8X (256MB DDR), and Sound Blaster Audigy 4. The only adjustment I had to make was turn off volumetric fog. I don't even really notice since there is still fog.

NICE JOB FC!!! Thank you, great work! -
That would be the case Buff....if they realized it was moving in the first place. I've had a situation when we were told to position and hold and was given the controls as I was putting the checklist away. I thought we were completely stopped, and looking inside as I was couldn't tell the airplane was slightly rolling...until I pressed the brakes with a bit of force and the last fraction of momentum was shed with a jolt. The same thing happened on another occasion as a Captain claimed the controls back from me after clearing the runway. Numorous times we have had the parking brake set in line to takeoff, and pressure has bled off and the plane starts ever so slowly to roll. Your first sense is the slight movement from the corner of your eye and your reaction is "!!Are we really moving!!?? You tend to see the movement before you feel it due to the airplane's natural vibrations.

I had that with my tomcats too after taking screens of the Blue Angels skin for the F/A-18. The welded swing wings made me laugh. I just adjusted the spaceing in the position callouts a bit wider. -
Welcome back guys!! And Weasel Keeper, it is a small world at that.

Guys, I've been gone 3 days. I see the direction this has gone and I appologise if my post added fuel to this fire. I never ment it in that manor. Having worked on F-4s I only wanted to add my personal experiance to the conversation reguarding the first post. My post was never intended to be a proclamation of limitations. I guess the only point I was trying to make is you can't use just photos as a definition of capability. The photo research I did on my unit's birds made me realize that even though I found photos of all the jets in the squadron, ALL the photos were taken on about 5 different days.......out of 5 years of flying the jet. I, for one, didn't express myself very well at all. Again, my appologies I didn't intend what I posted to sound the way it did. -

I recall this too on our F-4E's during the ORI's (Operational Readiness Inspection) that we took part in. The only time I saw wing tanks mounted was for LONG range deployments (Europe/SW Asia) to get them there. During the ORIs both the scheduled A2A, and scheduled A2G birds had the CL tank, and the A2A birds had 4 AIM-7s and 4 AIM-9s. By comparison, the alert A2A birds were stripped of the tanks and just had 4 AIM-7s and 4 AIM-9s, while the alert CAS birds retained their 600 gal. tanks. I do not however remember if the A2G birds had AIM-9s. Our primary task was laser bombing with GBUs, and the Pave Spike pod was installed in the forward left Sparrow recess. I do remember never seeing outer pylons installed unless we were deploying or redeploying. As soon as the jets landed at the deployment site the outer pylons and the stores they carried were removed and stored until the day before we redeployed home. Travel Pods were installed on both inboard pylons for the transit and carried crew luggage and small items of equipment. -

Decal Help!
drdoyo replied to gerald14's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I've always had problems with the game using only the first aircraft number decal in the series if the first decal is just named by the name. If you rename the first decal to name000 it should work. otherwise you get 4 jets numbered *name* example decal.tga <===== change to decal000.tga decal001.tga decal002.tga etc -

Here they are. Repaint as you see fit just give credit where it's due. You may NOT use these for commercial projects without my prior permission as these are shareware. You may upload skins created with these templates as part of any shareware package or mod just please if you upload somewhere else let the community here at CombatAce know with a post, or share them here too. Try the long way. Start here. http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autom...&showcat=28 Look for PolaksPRDesert2 tileset. That's where the water is that Brain32 is suggesting. -
Heh Guess they had an anti-skid failure during the run-up. No, I'm kidding. It just reminded me though of when my airplane suffers an anti-skid failure you loose hydraulics for both the brakes and the nosewheel steering.

A little text update, You experianced hands should have already gotten this. But for the new folks ADD THE FOLLOWING to your F-4E.ini just incase the game doesn't do it automatically [TextureSetXXX] <============CHANGE THIS TO THE NEXT NUMBER IN SEQUENCE (ex [TextureSet004]) Directory=163TFS-122TFW_Asia1 Name=122TFW Asia I Camo Nation=USAF Squadron=163TFS Specular=0.300000 Glossiness=0.250000 Reflection=0.000000 [TextureSetXXX] <============CHANGE THIS TO THE NEXT NUMBER IN SEQUENCE (ex [TextureSet005]) Directory=163TFS-122TFW_Egypt1 Name=122TFW Egypt I Camo Nation=USAF Squadron=163TFS Specular=0.300000 Glossiness=0.350000 Reflection=0.000000 [TextureSetXXX] <============CHANGE THIS TO THE NEXT NUMBER IN SEQUENCE (ex [TextureSet006]) Directory=163TFS-122TFW_Euro1 Name=122TFW Euro I Camo Nation=USAF Squadron=163TFS Specular=0.300000 Glossiness=0.250000 Reflection=0.000000 Thanks guys!! And NOTE TO SELF, don't upload the same day the documentation is written, let it set overnight and go through the steps like a newbie would LOL -
I started working on these a year ago (ALREADY? Time flies!) I had put this aside because I'm getting old and my memory isn't as reliable over the 16 years since we retired our Phabulous Phantoms. I recently ran into a trove of photos of our birds, so I can now sith some dgree of exactness reproduce all 24.,,(+) F-4Es that we had in the 163rd TFS. I say plus because a couple of the birds have alternate histories from the rest. A couple of pics (I wanted to post them with Pave Spike and GBUs but I didn't take any pics with that loadout....yet ). The Wing Boss's bird A couple of the other birds

Thanks for confirming that. I was sure it had 2 bulbs and was going to mod the ini accordingly. I didn't remember the white light pulsing though. I'll work that in as well That looks like the skin that MPPD worked up . Do you have any more info on serials and other wing markings? I'm beginning a three day trip for work today so when I get back I'll do the documentation for the layered templates and try to get them uploaded. THANKS to USAFMTL, HrntFixr, and Fubar and anyone else who may have been invilved for fixing my upload mistake with the skins. -

Hey MrCraig41, I have a question for a crew chief to answer. Am I mistaken that the red light in the vertical stabilizer flashed? I seem to recall that it did but the years have dulled the memory. I do know that the white light at the aft tip of the fin cap is missing. Just a couple more ini edits I'm thinking of. -

OK, I'm in the process of releasing this one. The problem is I uploaded it to the wrong section. It should have gone into the Aircraft Skins section. I uploaded it to the new aircraft section by mistake.
