I just recently downloaded the wonderful Jaguar and A-4K with the new avionics that give a CCIP on the HUD. This makes mud-moving a helluva lot more fun that it used to be (although I still enjoy the TLAB (that looks about right)method. My question is - are there any other mods that have this awesome feature? Is the this feature available on WOV or WOE (I am just running SFP1). It seems to me like this is a major step forward for the game and the topic deserves some attention. Thanks!!!

Does anyone here subscribe to International Air power Review? When the hell are they going to get a new website? Are they still even publishing? -
Embarassing SF2V Question
brian79 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'm sure this question has already been asked, and I'm sureverybody will just roll their eyes at me over this, but here it is: How do you add third party aircraft and weapons to SF2V? I've never had any trouble getting addons to work in SFP1, WOV, etc, but the file structure of SF2V is perplexing me. I've searched the forums and I can't find the answer. I love SF2 because it finally allows me to run on Vista, but I miss all the great Mirage Factory planes! -
Embarassing SF2V Question
brian79 replied to brian79's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'm an idiot. I have been messing with tte core files and not those in SavedGames. Ugh. Well, now that I've figured out where to add things I have a new problem. I tried updating my weapons folder with one of the latest weapons packs and now the game crashes on startup. I'm sure I've screwed up my weaponsdata.ini, but I've heard other people say they aren't using one at all. I finally got the game to stop crashing, but the loadout for every aircraft is empty with no options to add anything (it's pretty rough to operate with only guns!) So I guess my new questions is this - if I want to run the game with all the weapons available in the latest weapons pack - how do I accomplish this? -
Embarassing SF2V Question
brian79 replied to brian79's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Well - nuts. Should I uninstall the game and start all over? I never had any folders populate on their own, and nothing I'm doing seems to be changing. However, the game runs fine, so I guess I should be happy about that. The goofy thing is that I never had trouble like this with SFP1 or WOV. Surely I am not the only one having this problem. Either that or I am a bigger idiot than I thought (i.e. my wife has been right all along). -
Embarassing SF2V Question
brian79 replied to brian79's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Okay, so I've created the file structure: QUOTE (TK @ Apr 2 2009, 01:37 PM) If your mod folder is set to C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2, they should be: C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2\Effects C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2\Sounds C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2\Objects\Decals C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2\Objects\Pilots C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2\Objects\Weapons All seats (as well as pilots) related files go into Pilots folder. TK And thrown in add-on aircraft but they still don't show up when i run the game. The game runs fine, but I only get stock planes. Any ideas? -

So here's the deal - I'm a longtime player of SFP1 & WOV. Sadly I'm running on a Vista machine which causes me no end of headaches and has kept me from running WOE & WOI. My main question, though, is this: What are your favorite addons that include CCIP or some form of fire control? So far I've primarily been using the A-4K and A-7E, but I'd like to expand my repertoire. Any suggestions?

Stupid Vista and WOV, SFP1
brian79 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I have tried everything mentioned in the forum to get these games to work with Vista - but to avail. I've updates DirectX, set the compatibility of the program, etc etc. Does anyone have any idea why I still can't get the sims to work? I'm getting that stupid "missing .dll" message - again, despite a DirectX upgrade. Any help that can be offered would be greatly appreciated. -

You have a point about the value of ugly planes (SLUF, A-6), but bite your tongue for saying the F-4 was ugly! -
Questions About Fire Control
brian79 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
This question has little or nothing to do witht he game. Does anybody know the best way to find out exactly how these late 60's and early 70's aircraft actually delivered weapons? I would like to know more about how DIANE and LORAN worked (could the A-6 aquire targets through jungle foliage, for instance?) Also what versions of the A-4 and A-7 had CCIP capability or not (and if so, how good it was). Also information on exactly how accurate radar, through-the-clouds bombing was on aircraft that had the capabilitity (like the Thunderstick converted F-105). The AIRtime books cover some of this stuff, but not much, and the squadron/signal books are a joke on these topics as far as i can tell. Not much experience witht eh Osprey series, but they seem to be more narrative-oriented. At this point I am almost desperate enough to start emailing old pilots to ask them these questions in person. Any thoughts? -

Thanks for the info! Maybe I need to look more into the anecdotal information and stop sifting through the purely technical stuff? -
F-101
brian79 replied to jwh1971's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Obviously the special weapon on the B was the Genie, but there were a couple of variants (the single-seaters) that were designed to toss free-fall nukes at the Russkies. I can't recall exactly what variants (the A I think), or the weapon. I'll check on this when I can get my hands on my data after I get done teaching. -

brian79 replied to jwh1971's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Of course what would really make an early model F-101 mod sparkle would be a weapons mod so that one could carry the kind of nuke the one-oh-wonder was meant to sling at the Soviets. I could be wrong but I dont think the current weapons pack includes that particular 'special weapon.' -

A good F-101 quite possibly might make me dance a jig. The question is - what would people prefer to see? an A, B, C or RF version? -

Perhaps my questions should be directed elsewhere? Does anybody knoe of a good place to look for the answers I am seeking about fire control on aircraft from the Vietname era? The Airtime books are okay, but they don't really get intot he details, and thery don't treat teh A-7 or A-4 at all. Its annoying that we tend to overlook the planes that really put the ordinance on thr ground. I doubt that many Vietnam era grunts care much about what teh F-4 did to the NVA - but would be glad to talk about how the A-4, A-1 and A-7 got them out of some messy scrapes. Which raises a whole other point, the CAS mission in SFP1 is nonexistent - hopefully they fixed this in WOV? -

brian79 replied to brian79's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I have appreciated all the kind responses to my queries, and I dont want to seem ungrateful, but I am still curious about adding the CCIP mod to existing aircraft. Is It possible, even if it would be mean engineering a slightly anachronistic aircraft? Also, I have been digging for a long time to figure out exactly what F-4s had CCIP capability. As I said, I know some E and Ds had it, and I would assume that the Navy would be keen to have such a system, but I have never been able to verify whether or not the fire control upgrades that the J, and S models underwent included such equipment. Furthermore - does anybody know if any American A-4 models had this capability? If not what the hell was in the camel hump (sadly its even harder to find good info on the A-4 since there is no Airtime volume that covers it and the Squadron/Signal book on it went out of print ages ago). While we're at it - how cool would it be to have a realistic mod of the M-1 carried by the F-106 or some of the early intercept systems on the F-94 or F3D. In the case of the F-106 this would require 2 joysticks for maximum accuracy! SAGE would be way beyond what the game's engine could handle - but one can always dream. At any rate, it seems to me that fire control is one of the key issues that never gets dealt with when one is talking military aviation history. Everybody is all hot and bothered to talk about the aerodynamic qualities of these aircraft, but the actual delivery of weapons the a real elephant in the room. Afterall, aren't wars won by dropping explosives on people's heads accurately? -

Coolsville - i've gotten the A-7 D and E to work, now is it possible to start fooling around with this mod and update teh aavionics in, say, my IDF F-4E (whihc already rocks)? I did not know that the TISEO was a WSO/RIO thing only. Exactly how did that work anyway? On the topic of weapons delivery, I seem to recall that there were some modified F-105s that could bomb through overcast - "Ryan's Raiders" I think they were called (the unit, that is). Does anybody know how that update worked? Was it a modification of the exiting radar, or a new weapons control system? Any chance at all that we could see something like that in the game (by integrating targeting and autopilot or something maybe?). For that matter, B-66s could do it. Anyway - cheers to the genius who modded this CCIP thing - the game is now complete. Well, it will be once we can toss nukes with an F-101, but once again, I digress.... -

brian79 replied to brian79's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Point of order my good man, but its my understanding that the F-4Damd E models had a rudimentary CCIP calleedd WRCS (weapons release computer system). I'm not sure, but I know thgat after 1973 many F-4s were fitted with the AWG-10A fire control system which, among other things aided in the computation of impact point of unguided weapons. I also think that some later variants of the A-4 and certainly the A-7 (as well as many of the add-ons, as you have noted) would have this capability. It would be just peachy keen to see a late model F-4E with TISEO. "It is perfume from a dress That makes me so digress?" At any rate, I tried the A-7E and found it wanting a CCIP. Are there any mods that you know of that have this feature other thant he A-4K and Jaguar (both splended mods, by the way) -

I guess my only further question is - why wasn't this part of the game from the start? It adds so much tot he experience that I don't quite know what to do with myself. What's next? DIANE for the A-6? LORAN for the F-4? Is there a time coming when (dare I hope the hope?) we'll be able to accurately bomb through overcast? -

brian79 replied to McNally's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I have not come across that particular weapon. What aircraft is it compatible with? What weapon pack is it in? I confess that I am having a really hard time figuring out how to get all the weapons to work (that grenade launcher simply will not work on an F-4E). Doesnt help that I had to reformat due to a virus and have been re-downloading all the add-on stuff. -

brian79 replied to McNally's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Has anyone tried the LABS method with these weapons without using the timer? I dont know how useful it would be since these are high-drag and if I recall the weapons used with LABS originally were not so as to acheieve the furthest distance. For that matter they also used a charge to push the eapon away from the aircraft, and SFP1 appears to rely on gravity. I am just waiting for someone to develop a nuclear stand-off weapon in one of the weapons packs. it would be cool somebody make a fictional Skybolt or something of that nature. -

I have been having major problems with deployment of these weapons as well. Is there any way we could ever actually USE the LABS timer on the A-4 de deliver these weapons? Would be a cool delivery method and make up for the lack of challenge in simply vaporizing an enemy airfield.
