SF2 Falklands '82 - Fixes & Updates
ST0RM replied to eburger68's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
@Gunrunner Yep, I mistyped 3 Sqn instead of 1 Sqn. Thanks for the catch. -S -

Ahh, gotcha. Thought you were onto a new edit. Nice! -
SF2 Falklands Mod
ST0RM replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
What edit did you do to make your formation to start on the runway in that line-up? I use the "quicker takeoff" mod which edits the distance between aircraft, but this is something different. Or at least the coordinates you've used. -S -
The AIM-9G, SEAM and YOU!
ST0RM replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
More out of the box thinking, but can the "Slaved Seeker" function be used for visual locking? Using the Easy mode for the HUD or Avionics, you can designate target wthin visual range. Closest to center or next visual target, etc. Can a JHMCS or DASH helmet/AIM-9X, Python IRM combo be created? -S -
The AIM-9G, SEAM and YOU!
ST0RM replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Kind of a sidebar, but how does seeker head coolant amounts play into this? Later models having more or better utilizing the amount on hand? And/or better optics, etc... With the LAU-138 BOL rails, I know it was meant to increase the number of chaff bundles a jet can carry, but I thought I read that the nose assembly has a larger coolant tank in it as well. Gunny can you enlighten? -S -
AIM-9B tactics
ST0RM replied to Siddley's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Something that I've tried with success is to watch your radar screen. While the AIM-9B does not employ SEAM (Sidewinder Expanded Acquisition Mode), you can use the screens display to give you a higher chance of hitting your intended target. When you switch from SAHM to IRM, you'll notice that the acquisition ring gets much smaller. I've found that if I keep my target centered within that, I'm ensuring my AIM-9 has the best chance to see my target. He, or I, must not be turning and I've got a good solid tone, my hit percentage has improved. I wish I could find the tutorial on using the radar screen, so I could use the correct terms. But I hope you've gotten my idea. -S P.S. I agree about the Il-28s. They'll take a beating and fly on. -
They've got an interesting mix of former Eastern and Western equipement. Abrams MBTs alongside Russian T-72s(?). Hips, Gazelles and Hueys. Armed Cessna Caravans. Crazy. -S

Wow Ant. That shot is amazing. Reminds me of photos from the Mach Loop up in Wales. -Jeff -

Patch December 2010-C is out!
ST0RM replied to EricJ's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
JM, Your 3rd paragraph described many of the newer people to this sim. They've seen pics of all the new toys that have been added, but when confronted with a large or multi-place install, they come running here for help. Oh yea, and without reading the README or KB. It's the "I want this now" mentality. Getting back to the SF series though, there are still many things since Day 1 that have been broken or never implemented. People expect 100% for any amount of money paid. Be it $50 or in this case $15-20. Releasing a beta level product as a final was bad and it opened a floodgate of complaints. Some of which have been stifled for a long time. However, it's all about the way people compain that will either make or break us. Like that line in Saving Private Ryan. "This is the way to gripe..." If TK decides to lock everything, then I'd predict it would be the end of his sims. Mods have kept air in the TW lungs. They've bridged the gap between new products, keeping some freshness to an old sim. Without them, it's game over and people will move on. Jeff -

Fabulous! Where the Rainbow emicon?? -
Really? It was more of a generic term for the MiG-29 and Su-27 flying in frontline service with the Russian AF, versus the actual two they've got.

Some of the highlights being: Delayed or cancelled production of the F-35B (I guess the thought hasn't occured to them that it will drive up costs for the other jets) Cancellation of the USMC's Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle Increase healthcare premiums for active-duty and retirees Awesome times to come. Patch December 2010-C is out!
ST0RM replied to EricJ's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Was the inclement weather bug ever fixed with the Exp2 plus patches? I'm no longer running either Expansion packs, so my SF2 is only patched up to June 2010 standard. In the Falklands install, and every other install with Jun 2010, I'm also getting the low ceilings and rain. I've even gone into the *name*.ini and edited the WeatherChance. Nothing works. -S EDITED: Just and read much of the same reports over at the Thirdwire forum. So at least I see it's still not fixed. But TK was dismissing it as simply chance that you got stuck with that weather and not a bug. -

I on the other hand, am a canopy popper. I too like the emmersion of landing, taxiing and parking. Just wish the damn drag chutes were working. -
Nice link EZ. I've been following the recent flights of their MiG-29UB. Its truly amazing that we've got privately owned, front-line MiGs flying in the US. Who would have thought it back in the 60-70s when the Red Hat squadron was secretly testing them in the Nevada desert. On a side note. I get to see several of ATSI's TA-4Js flying around here. They are contracted with Boeing for KC-767 test/chase duties. I'd love to get out to Virginia to catch some ATAC's Kfirs and Hunters. Heard their Draken hass been down for a while though. -S

At Al Dhafra AB, UAE all along the flightline access road there were signs with safety related verbage for the fighter drivers. The best was "Know when to pull it" -
Money is the key to corruption. So many "heros" have gone down over it. Vietnam Ace Randy Cunningham went from a respected Congressman to a felon who is still in prison serving out an eight year sentence for briabary, tax evasion, and fraud. So sad...

Boeing P-8I Awesome Animated video
ST0RM replied to ghostrider883's topic in Military and General Aviation
I'm curious on how long the airframe will last at patrol altitudes. Cool video though. -
I used to keep up with Gene Buckle's F-15 sim pit, but he's not posted any updates in over a year. I wonder if it finally became too costly. Amazing time and work that go into these. The 737 looks awesome. The computing power to keep it that smooth must be crazy. -S

China's new aircraft and no one here talks about it ?
ST0RM replied to Wraith27's topic in Military and General Aviation
What? Are you 13? Yes, let's build more of an aircraft that has a 45% mission capable rate and after 5 years since reaching IOC, still doesn't have a complete A-to-G capablilty. Orbiting at 60K, chucking AMRAAMs at 3rd Gen targets from BVR is one thing, but it's a much different story when the opponent gets in close and can match or outperform your 5th Gen techno-wonder. Getting off the ground and to the fight is the first priority. The Chinese have taken a very interesting approach to their new jet. As was said it's huge. This leads me to think of it less as a fighter, but more of a long range interceptor, like a MiG-31. The nose is large enough to hold a decent sized phased array radar. Just not sure on how well the Chinese have mastered the ability to build powerful, but compact systems. That could have driven the size also. -S -
More like their little heads smacking into the ground. I listened to HLN this morning and the chem trail peeps were all over the net giving their expert opinions. Coincidently, we landed Code-3 for our chem-dispenser on the tanker failing yesterday, so Texas was spared. I'll get them next time though. For sure!
