Dan Hampton Interview (Viper Pilot)
ST0RM replied to MigBuster's topic in Military and General Aviation
I like his answer to question 3. He nailed it dead on. -
Thanks Hans, but I meant its mission. Is it an ELINT bird?

Hmm, the Draken would have been my favorite. Beautiful in the NMF. Thanks for sharing Ant!

Nice selection on part 1. Although the RAF GR.4 is rather blah. The Turkish CASA. What is that?

DCS WWII: Europe 1944 Updates
ST0RM replied to SilverDragon's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Because it is possibly the most often modelled era for a sim. So winning by shear number of times it's been done is the key? How about Korea? It combines the best of both; prop and early jets. But it has not gotten the same attention. Look how well TK's SF:Israel did. It gave simmers somewhere fresh to fly/fight. And it spanned over several years so you could cover several plane sets. This all in one download idea will do fine for some, but the expected wait time will put many off. Not my cup of tea, so I'll pass. -
VEAO A-4C Skyhawk
ST0RM replied to streakeagle's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
The early A-4s didnt have the split flaps/spoilers either. That came later on the Foxtrot and beyond. Why is that lower access panel modeled? I dont even know if its real. The back end came off for engine changes. But, at least it's in the works. Just need to tighten up some of the details. -
Sabotaging it in its war on ISIS? How about protecting technology from being handed over to ISIS. While there are good people still in the Iraqi military, many cut and ran when the shooting started and abandon their post, gear and fellow soldiers. That's who you are supporting?

VEAO Hawk updates
ST0RM replied to SilverDragon's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
I'm going to conjur up my own DCS:KC-135 brochures and hand those out as well. Either way, I cant fly anything new anytime soon. -
DCS WWII: Europe 1944 Updates
ST0RM replied to SilverDragon's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
This isn't going to go over well with the WWII crowd. Being on the jet side, I'll just wait on whatever makes its way eventually. Just glad I sat back and didn't back any of the Kickstarters. -
DCS: FW-190D-9
ST0RM replied to SilverDragon's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Not unless you: 1) can code/program very quickly 2) are wealthy enough to back your own project C) ask Santa nicely 4) All of the above I dont even think the proverbial "2 weeks" reply would help much here... In the meantime, you could repaint the P/TF-51 into a F-51 to coincide with the F-86. Repaint the Fw-190D into Yak-9 colors to replicate a Korean adversary. Squint really hard when flying and you can almost imagine the Crimea is Korea. It's only missing 1 letter in the name. -
There are some huge ships on that poster. It made my eyes go crossed trying to compare.

DCS: FW-190D-9
ST0RM replied to SilverDragon's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
I think it started here in early June: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=125454 From what I'm to understand, Luthier ran out of the money from the Kickstarter fund for the WWII add-on. Why? I dont know. Mismanagement? Over confidence in abilty to meet goal? Dont know. But, it does appear that ED's focus will now swap to the WWII aircraft set and continuing the development of EDGE. Anything modern (ish) will most likely have to come from a 3rd party. As paulrkiii said above, ED isnt the largest team and I think they will be forced to shelve some projects in order to pick up the $hit sandwich left by this. Now back to my FSX flying... -

ST0RM replied to SilverDragon's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
So ED has shifted it's entire focus to WWII? Or is that just the side project that it took on when Luthier failed to meet it's goals? -
I bought the plans and built my own to accommodate a laptop. It's easy to do and very modable to meet your setup. Jeff

VEAO A-4C Skyhawk
ST0RM replied to streakeagle's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
I think he's counting the centerline hard point. But yes, the B/C only has 2 on the wings. -
VEAO A-4C Skyhawk
ST0RM replied to streakeagle's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Why cant I? If you arent getting the support from ED, then you discontinue your work on their sim and move on. If you are willing to trudge on despite the lack of partnership, then its on you. Meet timelines or stop releasing teaser shots that frustrate people with the lack of progress. Or pick a subject that wont require a licensing/royality agreement. DCS has huge potential to be the greatest multi-platform sim ever. But I feel that the continual delays on delivering add-ons that meet customer wants will be it's achilles heel. You are right though. Many 3rd parties are jumping in with projects that have yet seen the light of day. IRIS, Aerosoft, RAZBAM, MILVIZ... Pfft, farts in the wind. They jump on the bandwagon of what is hot and release nothing. -
VEAO A-4C Skyhawk
ST0RM replied to streakeagle's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
The biggest issue I see is actually getting it released. So far, all of this talk of aircraft X "will be released with..." But only ED/Huey and Mi-8 Teams have produced actual results. When/If it is released, this will be a purchase for me despite the lack of an era related map. I like the Scooter and will enjoy flying/bombing in it. In FSX, I'm racking up a lot of hours in the Virtavia model already. -
Debate F/A-18 Super Hornet vs F-35 Lightning II
ST0RM replied to MAKO69's topic in Military and General Aviation
Well, if its anythig like the F-16 and it's limits with CFTs, there is only a loss of 1. Current documentation lists the F/A-18E/F at 7.5 G (clean). I couldnt not find anything that spells out an exact number with stores. Again, back to the F-16, I knew that with a pair of full 370gal Wing tanks, the limit was 6.5. Thats a 2.5G penalty for a heavy wing store. Probably safe to assume the same for the SH. Until Boeing finalizes it's testing with the CFT and EWP, we wont know for certain. But given the mission for this configuration, is a lower-cost Day 1-2 striker that needs a low RCS with range. Hanging stuff on the wings does not allow this. Period. You would have to develop all new weapons, tanks, everything in order to reduce the RCS. New pylons are only one part of the problem and not worth the cost with all of the extras that go with it. -Jeff -
Debate F/A-18 Super Hornet vs F-35 Lightning II
ST0RM replied to MAKO69's topic in Military and General Aviation
Having not read but the current page and why the pod isnt mounted on the wing, vs the centerline station. I'd like to toss out that, in addition to the loss of the lower RCS, you also reduce your G-limits when you mount large stores on the wings. And since this probably is meant not to be jettisoned, the centerline is the safest place. -S -
Am I reading hopes of a Korean War theme? F-51s, Corsairs, Sabres, MiGs and the list goes on... ;)

Ok, despite selling off all of my SF2 games last year, I still hung onto my SF1 disks. I got the itch to fly in the Falklands and knew where to go. I reinstalled SF1 & patched to 2008 level. Then I installed the Mod per the instructions. But in game, the weapons did not show up. Having forgotten a lot about this series, I did remember that I might have to use the wep and gun editors to show the game where they are. But when I did, I couldn't get it to see any weapons directory or files. So I'm at a loss and turn here for help. Any ideas? Jeff

Falklands 1982 Mod
ST0RM replied to ST0RM's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Yes, I've got that too. Made sure to match editors with patch level. Even looked inside the WeaponEditor config settings and made sure the path was correct. (C:\Program Files (x86)\Strategy First\Falklands 1982\Objects\Weapons) Still no dice. I'm stumped. Looks like I wont be flying in the Falklands after all. -
Falklands 1982 Mod
ST0RM replied to ST0RM's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
The Mod has it's own era specific weapons pack. But the game isnt recognizing it. As I said, my weapons editor should pick up the WeaponsData.ini file to import them, but it only flashes when I click on open to direct it to the file. I've changed the compatability to run in Win 98 mode and as Admin. I'm at a loss...
