Bad To The Bone...
ST0RM replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Welcome to CA, Calvin! We've been working with the school house a lot lately, down in the Lancer MOA. Maybe I've passed you some gas. Cheers! Storm -
All in the title. Tried looking but couldnt find the golden combo of words to find what I was wanting. Can Gunship be ran in XP or should I stick with my Apache AA sims? Thanks! Storm

That is awesome. Even more so that it's pretty historically accurate but sadly that is how people talk in games/chat rooms. -S

No, I never did get it to work. The main menu would come up, but when I would try and select any of other sub-menus, it would crash. I was just looking for something to put up on the laptop for deployments/TDYs that would be easy to run and I remember Gunship being pretty fun. Tonight when I get home, I'll post what version I've got and maybe we can figure out why it CTDs. Thanks! Jeff

cockpit tweaking guide
ST0RM replied to Aleckx's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I'm impressed. Honestly most of the new guys who come in here wont read the KB or mod anything on their own. You did both on your first try. Well done. But watch out, modding is addictive. You tweak this, then you notice something else... -S -

The separate front glass portion is called the windscreen. The bubble portion that covers the pilot/crew is the canopy. And my A-10 speed figures were based on real life, not in game. They can barely keep up with us when they are trying to take gas and carrying a full load of ordanance. -S P.S. Another tip is to change your settings. Try using Easy on the visual targeting. It will give you a box over what you are locked onto. Not super real, but will help. -

The Eurofighter doesnt have a TCS either. The turret you see on the front/side of the windscreen is the PIRATE (Passive Infra-Red Airborne Track Equipment) IRST (Infrared Search and Track). The A-10A+ and newly refurb'd A-10Cs now carry a laser targeting pod to track targets and lase a target to laser bomb employment. Before you ask on how to do that to your A-10, the Knowledge Base section has a very detailed explanation on how to add various weapons to your aircraft. But the short side of it is to add the LP to your stations list of accepted weapons/pods. This is in the data.ini for the A-10. Hope it helps. -S P.S. The A-10 carrying a full combat load tops out around 200kts. 250-300kts would be a good speed if in a dive -
Ok guys, my first few tests runs went well. Went 4 v 4 with the F-4E Kurnass against some F-16As from the Egyptian AF. We did surprisingly well. All 4 Phantoms survived. Granted we took BVR shots with the Sparrows, but the Vipers dropped chaff and beamed the missiles, so the radar broke lock and the missiles went stupid. All except one. Anyhow, we went into the merge and the -16s broke low, allowing me to pull into the vertical and manuever for a Python shot. Using the lag pursuit, I was able to keep my missiles seeker on the tighter turning Viper, even if I was outside of his turn circle. Keeping the speed around 350kts for the turn helps tremendously. With the edits that Jaeger_301 put up, the slatted wing Phantom can hold it's own. The speed bleed off wasnt as severe as before. Or maybe it was just a bit smoother in the pull and you dont get the immediate ruffle. According to the Knowledge Base, this section ( The [FlightControl] ) is mostly for the AI wingman's aircraft, but I'd swear it was different with mine also. One thing I did notice was with the MF's F-4E Kurnass (early). This is the short gun muzzled (non-Midas 4) and hard wing. Post Oct 08 patch, it is really unstable. I was trying it in an intercept against Tu-16s. In full burner, I was trying to give my missiles some extra speed. At 550-600kts, it started to shake really bad. The pitch axis needed constant hands on adjustments otherwise it would have went out of control. Since wagsled posted some edits for the F-4B, I'm wondering if these could be adapted for another hard-wing Phantom i.e. the early E-model. My next tests will be with the B-model using Wag's edits. More to come. -Storm

Somebody knows?
ST0RM replied to FLOGGER23's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
They did the same thing with their first F-4E Phantoms. Some went straight into use wearing the SEA scheme and the US insignia painted over, with the Star of David quickly applied. -S -
Dont go blind over those 5 days... I start 5 days of leave on Monday, so I'll be off also. Sim-time

Highly interesting: Red Flag lecture
ST0RM replied to Brain32's topic in Military and General Aviation
Nicely put Jug. -S -
Based off the video, the Cobra really doesnt do much to help the evading pilot, but instead increases the jet's RCS since you are giving your opponent a planform when you pitch nose up. And in the case of combat configured Flanker, the jet loses altitude, allowing the persuing aircraft to gain altitude and take a top down shot. -S

Sorry for the 6 month delay. Deployments, an Evaluator upgrade, and the new patches/reinstalls had me a out of the virtual flying loop for a bit. I'd like to go back and try the edits again with the new patches installed and see how the Phantom can handle it. I'll report back next week. I'm taking a full of leave. -S

It was real, and it wasnt meant for the basic civilian audience. Glad it got taken down. While not Classified, it should be Confidential/Need to Know. If it really was an Aussie that filmed it and uploaded it, bad on him. -S -
SAR missions
ST0RM replied to viperBAT32's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Before I became a Boom operator, I taught aircrew survival to our crews at Ramstein, and our NATO allies. Prior to that, I was assigned to two Spec ops helo squadrons and took part in both of the rescues over Kosovo. CSAR/Personnel Recovery is in my blood. Anyhow, one of the coolest exercises I did was out at the Hohenfels training grounds. We had 2 HH-60G Pavehawks, 2 Mi-8s, 2 Mi-17s, and 2 Mi-24s. The rescue package differed everyday, but would consist of a pair of escorts and one extraction platform. Sometimes the Hinds would cover the Pavehawks and on others the Pavehawks would cover the Hip, while the Hind sanitized the area. During 7 days of field exercises, we picked up 5 "downed" crewmen in all in various scenarios. Forest, urban and hilltops. On the final 2-day rescue, I teamed up with a German Tornado pilot. We successfully evaded capture that entire day and half the night. At midnight, we linked up with a French Pararescue team and we hiked to our pickup point, 20kms away. The next morning, we made radio contact with an AWACs who locked into our position, via GPS. After waiting a few more hours, the first words from the rescue birds came across the radio. We had a pair of SANDY F-16s overhead who would direct the show. The air component of the OPFOR were German F-4Fs and UH-1 Hueys. After a positive authentication of us, the Vipers directed other F-16CJs into the area to clear out the big threats, like a ZSU-23-4 we had spotted during our evasion the day prior, and told them about since it could become a problem. The "Weasel Vipers" dispatched the SAM/AAA threats and then flew cover. We got word the helos were inbound and prepared for our exfil. The Sandys dropped down and flew past our position on top of the hill, dipping a wing to us to show they know where we are and also to show the helos which side of the hilltop we were on. The Hinds roared over and hit some troop vehicles, and the few dismounted troops surrounding the hill. A quick pop of the smoke and a Hip dropped into the LZ to grab us. 2 minutes later we were airborne, headed home. I could go on and into alot more detail, but I think you got the idea. So yeah, some SAR missions would be great! Jeff -
Warships on antiship single missions?
ST0RM replied to Stratos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I've added the Kynda and Koni Soviet ships to my WoE. They are over at Capun's site. You have just the updated skin. look in your GroundObject folders to see how they are installed and mirror that. For the Kynda, my data.ini is this to get to show in place of the cargoship: [MissionData] NationName=Generic ServiceStartYear=0 ServiceEndYear=2025 GroundObjectRole=CARGO_SHIP Availability=VERY_COMMON FormationSizeBase=2 FormationSizeVariation=4 Exported=FALSE -S -

So you have gone back and added MiG-29s and F/A-18s? Can you give a new run-down on the planeset? -S -
Warships on antiship single missions?

Thanks Gocad, was going to mention to the formation size as well. A fleet of anti-air cruisers is a nasty surprise to an Orion or Viking. -S -
Warships on antiship single missions?
ST0RM replied to Stratos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Add a warship of your choice and change the XXX_data.ini to reflect it's mission as a cargoship and it will show up on the anti-ship missions instead of the stock cargoship. -S
