  1. Well, I guess it must be the trees. Scenery and terrain detail are on 4, as they were before, with density high. Where I used to very rarely see less than 30fps I'm now getting regular 18fps and suffering a stuttering mess. Reduced density to medium, not much improvement. I'll try the two sliders back to three and hope it does nothing more than take some of the trees away.
  2. Soon as I try to get into instant combat I get the message telling me to put the correct CD in the drive. There was only the one DVD with this game wasn't there? Because if not it means I've left the other disc laying around somewhere, but I'm not going to start hunting for it if it doesn't actually exist.
  3. I was being a dumbass, three months of not playing it and I'd forgotten it's the CFS3 disc that needs to go in. Well, a brief go and WTF! Albs were performing maneouvers I don't remember them doing before, wings coming off properly, fires starting after I'd broken off attack, followed by small and bigger explosions. Top wing came off my Se5. Camel is still a babe. I'm not sure if the sounds have been redone, as I recently cranked up my sub-woofer. Terrain is glorious. Only issue is my FPS seems to have taken a bit of a hit, but that might be a QC vs Campaign thing. The stuttering made things a bit uncomfortable a few times. I'll play with the settings. Anyway, I'm all fired up now to get my pilot back into action. He's been training the lads at home for the past three months but I hear he's on his way back to take over as SQ adjutant. Excellent job chaps, you bloody well rock!
  4. The level of support and plain generosity/good will are simply stunning. Thankyou guys. About time I hooked up my joystick and flew again. Rudders are still velcroed in position under my desk. But today I have to load the car for the one-week camping-trip tomorrow.
  5. Call this advertizing? If I was looking to buy RoF and came across this thread I'd have binned the idea by the fifth post.
  6. RoF doesn't have nearly enough planes in the box to make it a viable WW1 air-combat simulator, and while paying for them is a contentious issue I'd be more concerned about how long it'll take for all the important a/c to become available either way. It's a bit like buying an F1 racing-sim and finding 90% of the teams and their cars are missing, to be made available one by one over an undisclosed period of time (freely or otherwise). Plus all it's other significant flaws. *JaboOody Dubs Vincent voice* "Looks nice though".
  7. He's right about the EIII though. Months ago I refered to them as "OFF's UFO". In the real war the DH2 saw them off. In OFF the DH2 is suicide against them. And no human can fly them like the AI can, in human hands they're worse than the real ones were. But that's the only plane in OFF I've been angry with. I've done 1 vs six aces in QC quite often, and held my own. In the Camel I got six Albs. In a Dr1 I got a number of Se5s and made it onto the ground alive. Other times I've been burned. Variety is the spice of life, and OFF offers plenty.
  8. Those parts of the AI (and their planes) that are uber are offset by those parts that are dumber. The uberness makes proper aces of the AI aces, even if only by 'cheating'. The cheating overcomes the otherwise dumb behaviour they exhibit when one is on their tail. Taken in the round everything becomes largely smoothed out into a believable experience. Add six of uber, minus half a dozen of dumb = zero in the case of regular AI pilots. With ace AI you get the zero plus a couple of points for their aceness. Works for most of us.
  9. To easy?

Do you have your game fully patched?
  10. Awards system

    Superb work Parma.
  11. ...camping for a week, back next saturday. Just so you don't think the kill-board has been abandoned. After that I have two breeches and two gun-barrels to finish, then hopefully, at long last, I might be able to get back to some FLYING.
  12. This just isn't right

Well that's the thing you see old chap, we did win the bally war, so it's only fair we toss the old hun a bit of a bone, what?!
  13. All I can say is Capt Roy Brown was credited with Richthofen's kill, when it was in fact an Aussie MG'er who got him. In the game you only know for sure a kill was yours because the omnipotent code tells you so, even though you might not be credited with it. In real life you might shoot down a hun right onto your own airfield, and be sure it was your kill, but what if an MG'er insisted it was his and had witnesses to back him up? Maybe you both hit him. The game system abstracts all that very well, and by short-circuiting it you're detracting from the experience, in my opinion.
  14. To my American Friends

    Happy 4th guys!
  15. Tricky Camels

The Camel is my favourite plane, and it's propensity to spin is a great get-out-of-jail-free card.
  16. A little reminder

Heck, I was in that one. Don't recall the shoot-up being amongst home-towners though, more of an indirect shelling of the shanty-town over the rise. Curse whoever it was who mentioned Juarez!
  17. A little reminder

Damn, that must have been one fast gunfight! Who got shot?
  18. Dream on, SimHQ haven't had any advertizing money out of you.
  19. I had/have GPL, don't think I ever completed a lap in it. I did enjoy launching the cars from armco ramps though. Used to love those annuals too. I still have a 1963 Eagle annual, with Dan Dare in it.
  20. RoF First Impressions

I find the nature of OFF's terrain is such that I'm easily able to supply the finer detail from my own imagination. I've never been able to do that with any other sim. I'm not sure what it is exactly, the combination of colours allied with certain types of feature perhaps. I'm also not sure if it's just a happy accident or the result of somebody with a rare talent, but whatever, it works incredibly well. Having said that, the front lines are rather sucky, the only part of the terrain that's a let-down. There are too few trenches, and those that are there are not continuous or even going in the right direction in most cases. Buy I understand why (I think)...a limitation of geo-morphous tiling.
  21. RoF First Impressions

This RoF leaves me colder than a cold thing in a very cold place.
  22. I have it restricted to 950fps, airgun pellets lose stability (and thus accuracy) if they get too close to the speed of sound. Cats OvS? I kill birds for my cat; I'd certainly never kill a cat for the birds.
  23. Love the look of this Cowboy Game

Animations look a bit ropey. Very old-engine stylee.
  24. I have a bunch of fun with my Talon airgun, especially making performance parts for it on my lathe and mill.
