Tracer loading - historically accurate
Bandy replied to Bandy's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Hi Mike, That loading sequence sounds like WWII RAF from what I've read, but I could certainly be wrong. I'm sure somebody out there has it on their fingertips... Yes, my understanding too is that if you were found with incendiary ammo and used it on a/c, you were liable to be shot if captured! Now, tracer ammo (with its small amount of phosphorous) was used on both sides, so it must not have been considered incendiary even though (I suspect) it had some of its characteristics. Just food for thought was all I was positing. -

DH4 & Bristol F2b Replacement Cockpits
Bandy replied to Southside Bucky's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Many thanks Bucky, I've always shied away from the Brisfit precisely because of the cockpit, not that I look a gift horse in the mouth. AND I know exactly what you mean about adjusting those cockpits spending numerous hours making small decimal changes, starting the game, quitting, .... for just a few aircraft myself. Hope to try them out this weekend! -
Cool, but is this here by mistake?

The stock sim has only one engine sound, 'proploop'. But if you have paid for another WWI sim then it is very easy to compare and contrast then import favourite sounds from there and then go into the individual aircraftdata.ini files (i.e. DR1data.ini) and edit the engine sound file entry to match the sound file name. Do it for as many A/C as you like, I'm sure you get the picture. I've kept it simple to maybe a half dozen myself, but go wild! There also is a pretty good rotary engine sound file for the Dr1 here in the Combatace FE download section (I think...), as well as a host of gun sounds, archie, etc. You can even introduce new sounds to the sim, as one modder (name escapes me) added a canvas ripping sound to compliment the damage model. Again, go wild! I think you'll find 3rdwire sims to be so much more friendly to personal modding once you figure out what/where things are. Funny, I find myself in the very opposite situation having to figure out how to mod CFS3-ETO But my, I'm impressed by what those fellows have done to that ugly duckling!!!

This certain brought back the flamers! Thank you Mike, good attention to detail to spot the issue. But not sure about ProgressionChance=50, as I set an Alb on fire (it was a torch) then saw the flames extinguish themselves in the blink of an eye. Mostly a limitation of the damage model of course, but once on fire those A/C did not stop... What is everyone else's experience with the changed parameters?

Hey, many thanks Peter! Missed you around here...

Keyboard commands??? I just use the trigger...

Maybe the schemes were designed to give the allied pilots headaches, and throw off their aim? I'm prone to migranes myself...

RAMDisk from DataRAM link HERE is another solid utility that is free to download and use at this time to create RAM disks. From my read of their website it sounds like it is in beta stage, but certainly works well so far. I have 11 GB of RAM to play with so I'm experimenting at this time with only a small 4 to 5 GB RAM disk to use as process swap space. It can be reconfigured easily. I do not wish to portray myself as an expert (probably know just enough to be dangerous, but managed not to brick my video card when flashing its firmware...) but my understanding is that regardless of the amount of RAM you have, your system and running processes will STILL use the virtual pagefile which will slow things down due to I/O limitations of the hard drive (unless you have a solid state drive, but only a few of those are any good right now BE CAREFUL if you're looking at buying SSD's, read THIS FIRST). So basically I'm forcing the system to use faster RAM to do the same thing. BUT there are some hurdles to overcome; Windows does not like to have the pagefile on space that is available so late in the boot cycle (since a RAM disk is basically a software created hard disk...). So I'm experimenting with the minimum pagefile size I need on a regular HD to boot the OS and background processes, and then let the overflow (such as from sim requirements) go to a RAMdisk pagefile. Still tweaking... In conversations I've had with other flight sim developers there is no way to only load part of a sim into RAM disk; it is all or nothing at this time unless you can get into the code and change the call/directory path for things like terrain textures and objects. THAT would be really nice. I'm also thinking about an experiment that would pare down a sim to create a version with a minimum number of aircraft and other textures so that it could be loaded onto a RAM disk. I'll likely try this first with First Eagles because I am more familiar with it. It seems to me that CFS3 is not very robust and likes to crash when the smallest thing is not where it is expected. Another issue is that whatever program you want to run on the RAM disk must be loaded from a disk image each time the system boots, and saved to img each time it shuts down (otherwise it is lost), making very long start ups and shut downs though RAMDisk will do this automatically if you so desire. It is a fine utility that I have only begun to explore. Perhaps not the answer you were hoping for, but hope it helps.

Yes, sure you could set CPU affinity and process priority for EACH process by hand, BUT you have to do it every time on reboot; those settings do not stick in Windows. P-Lasso does it automatically for all processes on start up as well as a host of other things including a dynamic process priority that changes to "game mode" (shutting down unnecessary background process just like Alacrity does) when you click on a game exe. This is important for those that also work on their computer when not simming . The P-Lasso footprint is very small on your RAM and has negligible impact compared to its benefits; I can report back on process footprint if interested, but if memory serves it is around 3 MB compared to 40 MB for ATI CCC. But have a look and do some reading on the website...

That's a damn good question. I've owned both in the past and each has pros and cons with certain titles, but to think you'll only ever sim in OFF...? That's dedication man! ATI Radeon slipped for a while but I think the last year and a bit they have really come back. I still enjoy my now obsolete 4870 and its performance (though I'd recommend aftermarket cooling, about $20 to 30) and glad I didn't pay full price when it first came out, now I see the latest line with even lower prices... What's the world coming to!

Winston's Saturday MP sessions
Bandy replied to Winston DoRight's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
EDIT: Oops! I see there is a dedicated multiplayer forum up a level... Someday I'm going to get a headset and try this MP thing out. -
Process Lasso is very nice piece of code indeed. I liked it so much I paid for it (one-time purchase less than $10) even though the trial version will keep going with some caveats once you have it configured. Get it HERE After chatting with the developer on his forum be careful about setting ANY process above the default of normal. I too thought that TIR would require "extra attention" but apparently it can cause unforeseen problems. He didn't recommend anything higher than "above normal", and then let Process Lasso do its thing.

TS, You're probably right, I just fly a lot in Flanders lately so that could be my source of bias... Short term memory being what it is...

Sitting Duck, Glad to here of your success and will try what worked for you. But what are your system specs? In BHaH I used to sim exclusively in the early war RNAS period, N11's, 17's, and Tripehounds b/c I just love having the channel as a backdrop, and had good success. Then I tried 56 squadron and all my settings which gave me mid 30's to mid 20's were for naught and BHaH dropped into the teens all the time. Running Win7 x64, on oldish workstation: 4 x 2.66 GHz xeons, 11 GB 667 RAM (5 GB RAM disk), XFX 4870 1 GB, 1900 x 1200 26" Vizio. Am using ProcessLasso to assign background tasks to 2nd core, while foreground (sim, TIR, stick) run on core 1. I've had excellent results with CFS3-ETO with fps in 50's to 30's and all sliders nearly maxed out.

Yes, active archie makes the whole flying "sim-blind" well worth it. However, I've noticed that flying in Flanders terrain that archie there is much less active. I've flown over identified NME emplacements near their balloons and not a single shot was fired. Now, I know this doesn't make sense since guns are guns whatever terrain you fly in, but in Flanders it sure feels like the AAA is just asleep. Can anyone else verify? Hello, UK_W giving the "other WWI sim" a go? Give it a chance, add some excellent 3rdparty mods (a MUST are Peter01's flight models) and enjoy. There are pros and cons to each.

Wow, that doesn't look anything like Albert Ball

Combat Flight Simulator 3 - Ubisoft DVD

Guys, guys, guys, don't forget there is a regional setting on your DVD player. European DVDs won't play in US designated hardware unless you know how to hack it! -
HMS Eagle Carrier ops in BHaH
Bandy replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Its not the landing so much (if I remember correctly aircraft mostly never returned but landed on shore or ditched) but the take-offs with incipient catapult technology were hard on the pilots. Useless? Give it some time... -
Wow, I did not know that was released! Great news. Can you fly under the tower??? All joking aside, I hope this project, which has such great potential, gets out of the project team beta stage. If you are reading this thread mention your support! Sometimes people involved in projects such as this perceive them as thankless tasks, and need to know that all those long hours buried in the code are going to pay off with enjoyment for others. Thanks fellows for what you've done so far!

For AI and excellent Flight models for the player's enjoyment look no further than any of Peter01's packs HERE. Which pack you use depends on whether you have the expansion or use the latest patch. Things get really interesting with the AI after the 2008 patch...

Did a search for "Aeroplane Heaven" on this forum but no results, so figured this may not have been posted. If you haven't seen the site HERE it is quite nice and has some free downloads including a DH2 and EIII with nice pilot's manuals, though they are not original but mock/created. Still... I'm always trying things out, but haven't tried these yet. If anyone has then please report before they bork anyone's install. EDIT: funny, the link code was there, but somehow the lead was truncated... fixed now.

Hi Bucky. Can FE bombs affect another in-flight object such as an airplane or zeppelin? Or have you figured a way around that?

OT - Flight Sims on Mac ...XBox 360?
Bandy replied to Duce Lewis's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Actually my Mac Pro work station runs all operating systems, Mac OS (various versions), XP pro, Win7 pro x64, and Linux, on various drives and partitions, so there! Duce, tell your friend to get off his Mac butt and use bootcamp to make a gaming partition for XP or Win7 (on sale at academic price for $30 for a few more days). It doesn't get any sweeter than that!
