jayo, I thought you deserved a proper response to your questions. RAM is so cheap nowadays, why are you struggling along with less than 1 GB??? I know people have budgets, and you may have a legit reason to stay at your current RAM level, but seriously think about upgrading with a few sticks. You will enjoy your sims so much more. If your type of RAM is not available at retail anymore, then ask around locally to friends and/or post the RAM specs and see if somebody is willing to sell cheaply or simply donate old sticks to you. I've upgraded an old computer nicely for my 6-year-old son to play some early computer games like the StarWars Alliance series; he doesn't know the difference... Depending on your system, and since you are struggling with less than 1 GB RAM, then I would not suggest you try the ENB series, though a version of it does work in OFF. I suppose it can't hurt to try. Good luck!

sinbad, will Peter01's zeppelin FM, or parts/portions thereof, work in the L30? Perhaps a little cut and paste may spruce it up
-
Isn't that Hinchinbrooke's zeppelin, available here at CA LINK Peter01 has a flight model for it as well in the last FM pack...
-
Maybe he is running ENBseries files??? They work well to provide needed contrast in overly bright days (sort of like a polarizing filter effect), but kill too much light/contrast at dawn/dusk or overcast days. Good thing they can be turned off in-sim with a simple keystroke.

The sight mentioned is called an Aldis gunsight, which wasn't simply a 'boretube', nor was it a telescopic sight, but had columnating lens... more HERE So if one has an earlier version of OFF then am I wrong in assuming that it can be ported over to OFF3? There was an excellent hit-the-zeps mission for OFF2, but the zeps were only in hangars.

Try posting this over at the Thirdwire developer's website. To my recollection no one has ever mentioned this. Try a fresh re-install, that's what I'd do.

I'd have to agree with Mike D. on his observation, the only time I see flamers now is when collisions happen. IMHO something changed.

I have been experimenting on replacing the BoB WWII terrain with tiles from Edward's photorealistic set. I think they are simply a great balance of performance and good looks. But the SF tiles cover a lot more area than FE tiles, so they look kinda funny from the air. There is a lot of work to do, and I've been side tracked, but if there is some interest...
-
Those were my words exactly! That looks tremendous Jan! As far as the "terrain not being very high resolution" that is not such an issue. There are relatively few city tiles and these could be made into a higher resolution pack for those with more powerful systems, and leave the rest (farms, rivers, etc) at lower resolution to improve fps. Very early on in FE there was released a pack of just high res trench tiles, and they blended in perfectly with surrounding low res farm tiles. I hope Jan releases soon, and leaves something (like this) for others to build upon.
-
Not that there is anything wrong with the BoB terrain (which is very geographically extensive) I think it largely uses the WOE tileset, which looks very bland. The tile scale is also off for FE and the airfields are just, well, wrong. You CAN fly across the channel in Edward's Flanders Terrain and England is there; I made the voyage in an SE5 a while back, but hit control-F12 and zoom over in the fly camera. But as you noticed or assumed, no civilization is developed. The Thames estuary is there, but the terrain cuts off well before where London would start. One could suspend reality and perhaps just put the western London suburbs (Greenwich?) and docks at the very margin with airfields closer to the channel. This would be an excellent idea! High altitude zeppelin and Gotha intercepts, aircraft ferry missions over the channel to Candas gone awry, etc... I think I remember someone saying FE does not support ships, is this so?

OK, the add says the pack contains many versions of Red Baron: Red Baron 1 Red Baron: Mission Builder Red Baron 3D (a heavily patched version of Red Baron 2) So does that mean it is fully compatible with and/or includes some, most of, or all of the 3rd party add-on content available over the years? I've heard RB3D only shines with 3rd party content... Just asking, 'cause I was never able to get into that golden age of WWI simming due to real life.

How about a BIG bulls-eye target on it? There just HAS to be a wacking great target on it, maybe around the cockpit???

Hey, great news! Win7 and 64 bit itslef is breadth of fresh air in performance in my experience, and you'll be surprised how similar it is to XP under the hood. Things you need are just in different places and called different names, and then they call it "new and improved", go figure... Upgrade the GPU when you've got the liquid cash. The day you buy the card it is obsolete and you feel like sh_t, but that's life. Not trying to sound like a seasoned hard-core gamer (I've not tried this myself yet but will soon), but since you've got a new rig and are just setting it up, get another small hard drive to install the game/sim folders to and just run the OS on the other (of course). It is supposed to really help with read/write speed of graphics. Some even have a third drive for the page file. These support drives do not have to big, say only 250 GB so they double as back up drives and read faster because they have less area to search. Big drives like your 640 GB should be partitioned IMHO unless used solely to store movies, music, etc. Maybe just try to format your old Dell drive for this purpose, just to experiment. Can't hurt. Just a thought.

Sounds like you need to enable v-sync if not already. Glad to hear things are better.

Got dibs on his Jagermeister and Kirschwasser if any is left...

Anyone ever play Aces of Aces? Have a look HERE. It was pretty revolutionary at the time (pre-PC), two players each had a booklet and chose maneuvers each game turn (see 'em at the bottom of page). The booklets sort of 'computed' the end result of the two moves and if you landed on page 20, Blammo!!! Head to head guns blazing... There was even a radial vs. radial version (Dr1 vs Camel, of course) and an inline version. I still have my copy of it believe it or not, used to play with my brother on long car trips in Canada. Someone told me they are collectors items now.

While you can set processor affinity in any version of Windows, you have to reset it every time on reboot. Also 3rd party utilities allow you to set process priority, and other optimizations such as "game mode" that tweak things that are a bit over my head. A very good one to try is Process Lasso HERE, which offers a demo that remains working and only adds a nag screen at start up when the demo period expires. I bough it subsequently for $8, and is well worth it.

The "other WWI flight sim" ? First Eagles???
-
I was wondering the same thing because I'm having issues getting HitR to run as well as stock BHaH, so I deleted the install and am playing BHaH only now... I know CFS3 can have multiple installs (for various era campaigns, ETO, MAW, PTO...) but only through a custom install applet appropriately named MultiCFS3 designed for this purpose. I'm not a programmer but I suspect the code is CFS3 specific since many files/folders are different, but you could try looking under the hood. Reference and links to it are HERE, scroll down to the ETO 1.0 and 1.2 install guide...
-
I too had very recent CH rudder pedal problems with a fresh install of CFS3-ETO (if you haven't tried it, ETO is amazing), but some fellows over at SIM Outhouse really helped, so check out that thread HERE. First thing is to make/rename a new in-game controller config. THEN go out and edit that one for axis controller code. There is also yet another file Devices.xml in the main sim folder I had to edit... ALSO, just discovered yesterday that my CH pedals stop functioning when I wake computer from sleep. Talk about frustration!

Check out 3rd party sound downloads for FE here at combat ace. There are several good choices BUT make sure you back up the originals! The 3rd party sounds are really up to your taste. I have a mix of stock and 3rd party. Mix and match! I even borrowed some from another WWI sim that I own . Also, turn up the number of sound channels. I do not find the sound "sucks", so maybe you need new speakers???

I think we're all on the same page here (if not the same forum ) in our opinions. FE is one of our favourite sims and we wish it got more attention. In a very odd way, FE and the fantastic updates TK created to the FE flight model (stalls/spins) and the excellent AI behaviour (IMHO second to none!) have greatly benefited his 2nd generation of jet sims. Now they are selling well all over again indirectly because of FE, but FE remains the runt of the litter! I think TK is justifiably proud of FE as a project, but his other daughters are just so much prettier and more likely to get married off... A tough business decision when resources are limited in the current economic climate, so we have to be patient suitors to the ugly duckling. Perhaps too many mixed metaphors, but you get the picture. Quack, if you haven't already chosen 32 bit, make sure you have/get win7 64 bit installed and then get some extra RAM. It makes a big difference. Mike1997 is correct, move those settings up! IMHO do a fresh install of FE (vintage 2006!) to the non-default location C:\Thirdwire... (you do not want to install to the programs folder!) and then just copy over your heavily modded WWI folder from XP to replace the stock. Works perfectly, no Expansion Pack install required. EDIT: a caveat for x64, many report that force feedback is not supported for their Saitek joysticks (yet?). My olde Logitec Wingman FF works fine, as does TIR and CH pedals. It has been a good experience thus far, except when win7 lost my 3 restore points just when I needed them...
-
Not meaning to be redundant, but if it wasn't perfectly clear already... Just in case anyone missed TK's pretty explicit comment HERE. Reading b/t the line maybe, but me thinks he doesn't anticipate much interest, so why go the extra mile. OFF3, now with new improved HitR , and perhaps ROF??? probably have really impacted FE sales... Sometimes a good idea has its time, but I'm really liking the ability to make a choice of what flavour to fly now. But then again, maybe we'll be surprised like Tailspin pointed out... EDIT: So those screen shots WERE taken in 2006!!!
-
Wow! I hear you. Remember when FE was first relegated to a spot within the SF forums? What was that all about? Things have been stagnating a bit of late, but this forum has seen some pretty fast paced activity and will again.
-
LOL!!! I love quack74's comment... Well, those screenies could have been taken in 2006. I know there is likely more under the hood, but FE runs just fine on win7 x64 for me, so I ain't spending another dime until some of the environmental atmospheric issues get dealt with.
