Saitek Smart Technology (SST) programming software has also been rewritten to run on PCs with the Vista operating system and we are currently beta testing for imminent release (watch the website for regular updates). Customers who have created their own custom profiles for games in Windows 2000, XP or XP64 will be able to easily convert these to run on Vista and the new SST software by downloading conversion software from www.saitek.com. Commenting on the Vista launch, Richard Neville, Saitek Category Manager for PC Gaming, said: “With the release of Windows Vista we have taken the opportunity to completely rewrite our powerful Saitek Smart Technology programming software from the ground up. This enables us to better account for new changes in operating system and PC technology, as well as including new programming features requested by our existing customers. We will be bringing these new features into the programming software via regular updates over the next few months; Windows XP and XP 64 owners will continue to be supported with these releases too.” For more information on Saitek’s PC Gaming range, please visit www.saitek.com. About Saitek: Saitek designs and manufactures consumer electronics products which work together to improve the user’s multimedia, gaming and communications experiences. The latest addition is a new family of innovative and practical audio products designed to improve users’ digital entertainment experiences. CombatAce note: the drivers are at ftp://ftp.saitek.com/pub/software/vista/ but the SST software for Vista isn't out yet.
  4. http://www.shockwaveproductions.com/bob/up..._util_v2.01.zip Changes from boxed version v2.00 to v2.01 * Bug fixes: - Several bugs have been fixed that can lead to CTDs (Crashes To Desktop). - In-game / Windows resolution is automatically synchronized for increased stability with background applications running. - If TrackIR or Newview (et al) are detected but not enabled, the program will revert back to mouse/keyboard/POV view control. - Fix for vanishing replay-buttons. - Some lines, for example those of the Enemy Position Indicator, used wrong colour(s). - Correct handling of dummy anims (possibly caused a crash). - Do17 skin adjusted (main wing bottom). - Ju88 engine texture fix. * Other Improvements: - SmoothenFrameRate changed to SmoothenFramerateMode and reworked. The default smoothens but does not limit fps. - New bdg.txt variable "NO_OUTSIDE_TRACKIR" - The bdg.txt variable OPTIMISE_OBJECTS_AT_RUNTIME changed to DISABLE_OPTIMISE_OBJECTS_AT_RUNTIME so that the old setting is ignored. The new default is to optimise. - In OPTIONS, "reflections" has been renamed to "mirror." - Optimised for framerate (mainly by going to a 32 bit FVF). Unfortunately the effect seems to be very small. - Reduced usage of video memory on 64 MB cards a bit. - Improved debug code/warnings in a lot of places. - Better lighting on individual trees. - Smoke trails further tuned. - Cannon smoke more subtle. - Engine sputter sound re-worked. - Throttle off warning sound reduced. - Brighton and Cathedral texture reduced in size.
  5. Got it in 1. These games have a two thread engine if you like. 1 handles the gfx & 1 handles the rest.

  14. OK FINAL WARNING!

There is nothing wrong with having a different opinion or arguing that point of view as long as it is done intelligently, civilly & maturely. Indeed discussion is a good thing. Acting like a spoilt kid is not & we may just send offenders to stand in the corner ...
  15. I'm thinking of getting a new stick

that's always going to be subjective - those that have them seem to think that they are quite an improvement on the standard X52. Saitek have a new driver release due next week & it may also coincide with some more options in their programming software.
  16. I'm thinking of getting a new stick

well your choices for a combo will probably be TM Afterburner II - cheap if you can find 1, does the job OK but ultimately the most limited in programming Saitek of some sort - X45/X52/X52 Pro - more programmable than the AB II but not as much as the CH/Cougar CH products - very reliable, extremely programmable, TM Cougar - feels good (metal), extremely programmable, may not be the most reliable Having handled all 4 I would say that you can probably narrow it down to the Saitek & CH choices. Imo CH probably have the better stick but Saitek have the better throttle As you're in the US there may not be a massive difference in price between an X52 Pro & a CH setup but an X52 would probably come in well under that.
  17. http://wesleytech.com/plextor-exits-cd-dvd-markets/ Came as a surprise to me but as ODDs become commodities how they could justify the size of the premium over NEC/Samsung etc. drives I don't know. edit: apparently won't affect America http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=5826
  18. Saitek X52 Problem

The X52 pretty much runs up to the red line in terms of power draw available from USB which is why it's not recommended to run from a non self-powered hub - usually the USB ports on the backplane are the best. If your PSU output is starting to decline (as they all do with age) it could possibly not be supplying enough power. Alternatively you could try to roll back to when it was working before or you could try an uninstall/re-install. if you've read www.saitekforum.com then you should be familiar with "First unplug your controllers, click Start>Run and type ny -7 (drivers newer than 4.3.3.1727 ) (case sensitive) and click OK. Now go to Control Panel and run the Add/Remove Programs icon. Remove all Saitek entries in the list of programs and then go to the C:\Program Files directory and delete the Saitek folder. Restart your computer and the files will all be uninstalled. Now browse to your C:\Windows\Inf folder (if you can't see an Inf folder then click Tools>Folder Options at the top of the window, then click View at the top of the window that comes up. In there click the dot next to the Show Hidden Files and Folders option and then click OK - you should now be able to find an Inf folder in the Windows directory) and look for the OEM0.inf file. Find the highest numbered OEMXX.inf file and double click on it - a Wordpad screen will open up with information in it. You're looking for any lines that refer to Saitek (usually at the top of the window). If you don't see any such info close that window and open the next OEMXX.inf file - so if you started on, say, OEM30.inf then you'd now open OEM29.inf. If you find any that refer to us then close the window and delete that OEMXX.inf file along with its accompanying OEMXX.pnf file. Go through all of them until you have deleted any files that mention us. Now do a search for files in Windows using the following search string: sai*.* Once it's finished finding any files delete them - files only though, don't delete any folders. Now restart the PC and then install the X52" Btw Vista drivers are due out next week & i wouldn't be at all surprised if there's an XP update to match.
