Yeah, Armourdave is missed around the Thirdwire series. He was one of those who kept the faith in the pioneering days, produced some great add-ons, especially my favourite, the Thud, and pointed the direction towards WoV with preparatory work on the 'Vietnam add-on'. He was a good guy, so I hope life is treating him well. -

These look very interesting, Brain. One thing that puzzles me is the gap between my/the popular conception of Vietnam as a wet, lush tropical terrain. I am thinking Apocalypse Now and similar movies in which there are lots of shimmering rice paddies. But when I loon on Google earth at modern Vietnam, it does not look as much like that. Good luck with this project! -

These look amazing! Thanks for the work on these effects. They really add to the whole experience. You know you have hit the enemy when the explosions ignite and I love the way stuff zooms away from the centre of the explosion. There is real 'kapow' factor when your effects blow up. It is also a spectacular showstopper when I get hit!! I particularly like the look of the forthcoming oil fires and the tanker blowing its top. -

I would be grateful for some help. I have a complex carrier mission in WoV which requires other flights from carriers to make diversionary raids on SAMs, etc. in support of my flight. The A-4s go straight in but the Phantoms just stand off and circle aimlessly just off the North Vietnam coast instead of going on to their targets. I am using KMD. I have tried everything I can think of, including changing the target, pulling the IP further out from the Objective Point, changing the type of mission from Strike to SEAD. Has anyone experienced this problem and/or have a solution? Thanks in anticipation of any help or enlightenment you may be able to give. -

Thanks, guys, for the help. Everything AOK now!. I did notice that there was a difference in Size= but not knowing as much about it as you do, I assumed (wrongly!) that the sizing 'decision' was inherent to KMD. Consequently, I did not mess with it. This is obviously an important issue for making missions to which I am now alert. I appreciate your time on this one. Sag, re the mission. This is not a YAP mission, just one I am working on myself. The fleet of ships, including supply vessels, gives fantastic immersion on Yankee Station as they steam along looking like the USN is in real force. Flying away from them and looking back through the clouds is pretty impressive. There is a real sense of leaving a secure environment for a lonely hike over North Vietnam. I also placed a splinter group further North towards Hainan island in order to launch diversionary raids - of which Lion flight is one. There are two Midways in there in different deck configurations - one to launch my flight, the second to land it. Some of the ships are not quite historical but they will have to do. In one variant I put a bunch of North Vietnamese Il-28s in to attack Yankee Station just to see what would have happened in real life had they decide to sortie out. The flak was phenomenal and blew them away in no time at all. -

SAM problem

Check that in your mission dialogue box, SAM level is set to 'normal' or 'heavy'. With KMD you have to click 'apply' and 'save all' after each selection; otherwise it may revert to default settings. If that is 'light' for SAM activity, then you won't see many SAMs at all. It also depends on what part of the map you are flying to and which map(s) you are using. You can also set up your own SAM rings in places you want to go to but which are short of them. Magnify really high, set up a ring of SAMs and place a radar - Fansong or Spoonrest - in the middle. Check that they are networked - or not, if you prefer single shots at you. If you can be more specific about your mission and what map you are using, I may be of more help. I made a mission of my own which involves US Navy flights off carriers in the Gulf of Tonkin, with Thud flights coming in from Thailand. There are SAMs popping up all over the place, including the one that took me out over Hanoi! In another replicating Linebacker II, salvoes of SAMs blast at B52s - no shortage of SAMs there. -

Carrier Confusion

I think you may find that the AI does in fact land on the carriers. I have seen this happen before and it occasionally happens on runways. The AI comes down across the runway/carrier and then swings hard sideways. Weird but it works - except when it doesn't! On other occasions the AI lands beautifully from astern. The effect is a bit random, to say the least. -

Adding objectives in a map?

I think I'm answering the question you want answered. Open the terrain in Kreelin's great KMD. Magnify the map massively so that the runway and base features are clear. Add static aircraft from the aircraft drop down menu. I have found that placing them as single units works - not putting them in in multiples. Make sure you have the skin you want. Check the headings you want in the waypoint parameters. All heights and speeds should read 0.0. The same works for any other ground objects. When you are done, open the mission in notepad and check that the mission says 'Start on ground=TRUE'. In my experience, this sometimes says 'FALSE' and it leads to spectacular aircraft explosions when you load the mission about 500 metres above the point you located the static aircraft. At first I could not figure out what was going on until I checked the notepad version of the mission. When editing, you can also change the heading of the aircraft or ground object to the way you like to line them up. I have added heaps of static aircraft and objects to a number of maps. If you have YAP, you will have great looking bases. Good luck! If you need any more assistance, giveme a shout. Buildings are a different issue.
