  1. Westminster Abbey & the Unknown Warrior

Cody Coyote, I have a very good book that details how the tomb of the unknown warriour came about. Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the book, but it explains in detail how the solfier was chosen and brought back to England and the fact that 4 barrells of earth from flanders were brought over with him so he could be interred in the soil that he and his comrades had fought over (and in, in some cases) and the work that the reverend David Railton who was a chaplain in WW1 did to bring it about. It also details how the French, German and Americans followed the lead of the British and chose their own unknown soldiers and the particularly poignant one for me is that the french chose dug up one french soldier from each of the major battles they had fought, giving a total of 9. However the person in charge reinterred one of them as he was not 100% certain that it was a frenchman they had dug up as opposed to a german. It was widely rumoured at least according to the book that the reinterred man had come from the battlefield of Verdun, where the fighting had been so close that french and german dead were intermingled. Just found the name of the book. The Unknown Soldier by Neil Hanson.
  2. Still Standing!

CaptSopwith, You haven't hooked up with Womenfly2 have you by any chance? Joking aside congratulations on the PHD (and the new girl). If I may be so bold, which period/type history are you specialising in? Barman, one large, rum, coke & Jamesons for CaptSopwith (yes all in the same glass).
  3. Reporting the Epic Win of the Year...

Javito1986, COngratulations on an excellent purchase. Although I am surprised you got it for such a bargain (£24.53) as when I bought it brand new back in 1995 it cost £40.00 ($66.82), and whenever I have checked prices for it since on Abebooks or ebay it has alway seemed to be in the region of £80.00+. Thankfully I have taken good care of my copy although I have got to sit down and read it at some point again. You will spend many hours reading this book. If I may make a suggestion, if you now purchase "brief glory" by Alex Revell which is the biography of Arthur Rhys-Davids, you will also find that an excellent read and it gives more of a personal insight into the lives of those in 56 squadron.
  4. Nviida video driver question...

DukeIronHand, I am now an ATI man, but my last machine used Nvidia (8600), however I still download the Nvidia drivers for my friend who does not have the internet, he has a 9400. Anyway, I believe that Nvidia have dropped support for all but the newest 400 and 500 series cards with their latest drivers. I have just checked the nvidia website and their newest drivers do seem to support the 7950 - however they may have stopped adding tweaks for those cards. Apologies for the rambling, but as a final thought try using the rollback feature in control panel to get your old driver back. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  5. Should I get BHaH now?

Crash101, The only time you will by extra aircraft is if you buy the Hat In The Ring (HITR) expansion, and that adds 5 aircraft and various improvements to the original game for $19.99 + any insurance you take out for the download. I think this is an excellent price for all the aircraft that you get in the game 39 in the original + 5 in HITR. The development team have done an excellent job of modding the CFS3 engine, to the point where it is unrecognizable, and a huge improvement graphically. One other thing, when you install HITR you must have BHAH patched to 1.32g before installation or it will not work properly. Also you will find the members of this forum very helpful.
  6. All, I decided to make myself a signature, this is just a test to make sure that it is working as intended, if anyone has any comments about the colour, or how it looks feel free.
  7. Lewie, If it helps any I am running an AMD Phenom II 965 with just the stock cooler, and at this time of year it is generally running at 35-45oC, I have just checked using the AI Suite and the CPU is running at 38oC with the temperature in the room showing 18.9oC. I have had no problems with it so far, although if either yourself or one of the techie's that frequent this forum could let me know what the maximum temp for a 965 is I would appreciate it, and also if they could advise any good CPU coolers if I need one in the future.
  8. Fallout New Vegas RTW Shogun 2 Total War Rugby 2005 Test Drive Unlimited 1 & 2 And eagerly awaiting Deus Ex Human Revolution (when it is finally released on PC) CptRoyce, have you played SH3, and if so how does Sh5 compare to that, is SH5 all mission based, or do you get the chance to go off and do a bit of extra-curricular hunting after you have completed the assigned patrol grid? Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  9. Olham, James McCudden in Flying Fury says that flying a Dh2 he cannot explain the intensity of the cold while flying a pusher airoplane, but it can be readily remembered by those that have experienced it. I know while flying with 56 squadron he cut a hole in the firewall between the cockpit and the engine and put a moveable shutter over it so that he could at least benefit from fome of the heat that the engine threw out, while he was at altitude. Not sure what other pilots did in the way of innovative modifications to their aircraft to combat the cold, perhaps one of the more knowledgeable forumites could help with the answer to this question. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  10. Hi, Perhaps one (or more) of our tech guru's out there can help me. I am wondering about my graphics card driver, ATI 5870 with the 11.2 64-bit software on windows 7 ultimate 64-bit. My question is this, I tried using driver sweeper to uninstall the old driver and then rebooted and had windows install software for the 5870, which I then installed the 11.2 software (full package) over. I now have on the icons in the right hand corner when I click on the ATI thumbnail 4 options I have Catalyst Control Centre and 3 ATI Radeon 5800's showing which when I hover over them they show extended desktop, when I hover over the 1st one it shows rotate display, set desktop area to and 3d settings. Have I somehow corrupted the driver that I have installed and how do I clear my system so that I can install the driver afresh without doing a complete format and reinstall of windows. The reason I ask is that I had a local "computer expert" around last weekend and he told me that I had 3 sets of ati drivers installed and had managed to corrupt them. He also told me (which I take with a pinch of salt as I have the original Windows 7 holographic DVD), that as my computer does not show the windows 7 serial number on the startup screen that I had a pirate copy of windows 7.
  11. Graphics card driver issues

Guys, Thank you for the replies regarding windows and my graphics card, as it appears to be running normally, I will leave well alone for now. However I have another question regarding my ram, I have the following installed: Corsair 8GB XMS3 PC3-10666 1333MHz (4x2GB) - Lifetime Warranty (DDR3) I assume that the 1333MHz refers to the speed it is running at, but when I use programs like CPU-Z and PC Wizard it shows me that the ram is running at 667MHz, in the bios I have the option to change the ram speed, but I am afraid of damaging/frying the ram. I have also read on a forum that for AMD Phenom CPU's 667MHz is the correct ram speed. Please advise. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  12. Werner Voss or a Cecil Lewis?

Hellshade Personally I would prefer to fly like Cecil Lewis. That does not mean I don't admire what Werner Voss achieved during his short life, and while I would have liked to see him survive to the end of the war, as I am sure he would have far surpassed MVR's victory total. This is also tempered with relief for Werner Voss that he was killed in combat, because as a Jew I think he would have died in a concentration camp, which I am sure we all agree would have been a sad end for a great pilot. BTW I also think he was a far better pilot than MVR. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  13. OT- High in the Empty Blue

I will second Shredward on that sentiment, it is the most detailed history of any since unit in any conflict that I have come across. The hardback version has 397 pages covering the squadron during the war, comprising combat reports from every patrol flown by the squadron, and various other sundry items of interest about the personnel and the SE5 &SE5a aircraft that they flew. Pages 398 to 445 cover other items such as squadron markings and just about anything that you could want to know about the personnel who served in the squadron. If you buy the book you will not be disappointed. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  14. Lewie, My old system sounds similar to the one you are looking to get: AMD Althlon Dual core 6000+ (running at 3.01ghz 3 gb ram 8600 1gb ram XP 32 bit That system ran BHAH ok, at about 20-40 fps and the sliders mainly on 2 with the slowdowns mainly occurring over airfields. I would suggest that you try for a better graphics card, possibly an ATI 4870 or an Nvidia 250 as the minium for decent framerates. But in answer to your question, XP did not have any problems with 3gb of ram +1gb of video memory. I would suggest that you let one of the more knowledgeable forumites with regards to the technical details for your system. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  15. Reticent WIngmen

    When When When Lol
  16. Olham, After seeing his video's, I am convinced that Hellshade does fly like Albert Ball "attack at every opportunity and sod the risk". LOL Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  17. OT I nearly lost my best friend

UKW, 17 years old, he has had a good long life, and just like your 2 dogs, I bet he has a hell of a lot of character.I bet Max gives him a wide berth, so too will Sophie when she has matured a bit. You got that right, the cats always come first, and if they don't they whinge until they do. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  18. OT I nearly lost my best friend

UKW, I know what you mean with the above quote, although I and my mum are more cat lovers, in fact ever since I can remember my mum has had a cat, so I can understand your worry about when Max finally has to leave you. But when that happens you will have lots of great memories from when he was a pup and from later on in his life. The best memories of my mums cats that I have is of when they have been kittens as she has always had siamese and one which was a half siamese, and as kittens when you first bring them home, they always make me think of a new born giraffe, as they seem to have bodies that are on stilts, and a drunk is controlling the stilts. May Max give you many more years of happiness. Parky, I see from your picture that one of your cats is a siamese, I just can't quite make out the colouring, it he/she a seal or chocolate point, and if so how young is he/she. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  19. OT: I've Done It!

CaptSopwith & UKWidowmaker, I have as you suggested tried NFSPU in win98 compatability mode and with "run as administrator" turned on, it will not work in win98, but it will in both XP SP3 and vanilla win7 with "run as administrator" turned on. Also it crashes to desktop when I am in the 356A cup at the Normandie track on the first right hander when I am taking my normal line into the corner (my right hand wheels just clipping the grass verge), I know from previous experience that it does this with other cars later in evolution mode as well. If either of you can offer any further advice (or links to patches to solve these problems) it would be greatly appreciated. I am running it with the cd on the drive, Thanks Fenwick
  20. How Did You Find OFF?

I was looking for a worthy successor to flying corps which would work on my machine, flying corps would not work when it was patched on my XP machine, and I did not like it unpatched, as I can still remember shortly after I got it flying in one of the allied campaigns, and watching an albatross performing barrell rolls when his altitute had fropped to below 60ft until he flew into the ground, that was a common occurrence at low level in the unpatched game. Which I could just not live with. I stumbled across the OFF forum at simouthouse during the spring of 2008 and PM'd Nio to see if he would be kind enough to send me a copy of P2 which he did, and the rest as they say is history. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  21. What started your WW1 aerial interest?

My interest in aviation started at the age of 2 when my mum bought me a toy aircraft, as I am also interested in history (mainly military) I then when I was probably 9 or 10 started reading about WWII aviation, and then after I had got bored of that I started reading about WWI aviation, and the rest as they say is history. I have now been reading about WWI aviation for the last 25+ years, but having found online book stores like abebooks, I now have the problem of storage and the cost of some of the earlier books that I am now wanting to read (especially after seeing |RAFL's library, damn you. LOL). I now have to start weeding out some of the non historical books that I have and probably most of my fiction paperbacks. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  22. OT: I've Done It!

UKW, No offence taken, I run everything as administrator (I think, if you know differently please share, I will not take offence) as that is the only account on my computer, also I have tried it in windows 98 compatability mode as well as the standard win7 mode. I have not checked the run as administrator box if that is what you mean. Now I think about it had various lock-ups when I was running a win98 machine from 2000-2004 due to the paint scheme that I adopted for the cars (lime green), that problem disappeared when I left the cars on there default colour schemes. Also another problem that I found which was due to the keyboard driving controls I originally used (Q,A,O & P) was that the P key would cause the game to pause for a second and then carry on driving as if nothing had happened. CaptSopwith, I will be interested to see if you have any similar issues as you are playing through the early evolution mode. Thank you both for you help on this matter so far, I do not have the game installed at the moment, but I will install it in the next day and report back after trying the administrator mode and win98 compatability. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  23. OT: I've Done It!

CaptSopwith, I see you have NFSPU installed and running in windows 7 (32 or 64 bit)? The reason I am asking is I have tried to install and run it successfully on win7 Ultimate 64-bit, and it worked in that the game ran fine in evolution until I got to the 356 Carrerra B, at which point it keeps crashing on the Normandie track near the start on either the 2nd or 3rd right hand bend. Is this a problem with NFSPU in general and if so how do you solve it? I had it previously installed on my XP machine (what a nightmare to get running, on win7 it was install the game and it was up and running), and it had various points when the game would happily crash/lock-up. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  24. Emergency Funding needed!

UncleAl, Try 4th Feb to 16th Feb. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  25. 110th Birthday of the last Doughboy

Wodin, I assume from your comments that you are british, in which case the 3 gentlemen that you are referring to are William 'Bill; Stone who died in January 2009 aged 1007, Henry Allingham who died on the 18th July 2009 aged 113 and John Henry 'Harry' Patch who died on the 25th July 2009 aged 111. Henry Allingham was the last Kitchener volunteer and Harry Patch was the last surviving 'Tommy' to fight in the trenches and also the last living wounded 'Tommy'. That was a sad week as far as I was concerned. The last Central Powers veteran was Franz Kunstler who died in 2007 or 2008 aged 107. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
