Mig29G and Su27SK/China J11 modified FM
orsin posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - File Announcements
File Name: Mig29G and Su27SK/China J11 modified FM File Submitter: orsin File Submitted: 23 Jan 2009 File Category: Ini Edits Credits to Marcfighter and Lindr2 for their excellent work on the original FMs 1. SU-27SK/China J11 FM modified based on Marcfighter's original model It has been a quite disappointment to see little discussion about the performance issue of Marcfighter's SU27SK after 2008 patch of WOX series. I doubt if there is still anyone other than me playing su27 nowadays. The issue is quite apparent - under hard mode, su-27 has too much maneuvability that makes AI players run this bird into endless cobra-like movements in aircombat, which is an obviously unsustainable way leading to eventual disadvantage in dogfights due to low energy. The FM is also not stable in yaw leading to uncontrollable rolls at high AoA. When we "human" controlling this bird, it is also likely to have a blackout every 2 seconds. So there is where I start tinkering - beat the trend to run into high AoA, while also maintain an overall agility. In this model, You find a much less effective stabilizer, it has smaller angle, and faster rotating speed. The aileron is also modifed to synchronize the motion of rotating. Drag is also modified to fit this change. The test drive shows quite a good result - slightly better than the stock F15A, while enable AI play to maintain its energy. I play a few 12 x Su27 vs 16 F15+8 F4 case under hard/hard setting and had the chance to win out in all the case. 2. Mig 29G FM based on Lindr2's recent release of Mig 29 BM FM. First I would like to thank Lindr2 for presenting us his serious Mig 29 BM FM, which is based on real data from russian/soviet references. As such I don;t have to modify most parts of this FM. most of my change focused on beating the trend to rotate back at x-horizon at low speed (IAS < 350kmh). A minor change also fix the problem that the model rotate the aileron and stabilizer at the wrong direction. The overall outcome is also pleasing. The modified FM gives you a 50/50 chance to beat the stock F16 in WOI, hard mode. AI also run it well and can fight F18 at close to 1:1 shotdown ratio. Insky_orsin Click here to download this file -
MiG-29 new FM
orsin replied to lindr2's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I have noticed the ailerons of Lindr2's FM are rotating at wrong direction and below is a fix based on my FM updated yesterday. I have also put the stabilizers into roll control. Insky_orsin -
MiG-29 new FM
orsin replied to lindr2's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Hi Lindr2, thanks for the reply. the main focuses of my modification from your version are 1. roll control 2. the stabilizers 1. Roll control. I'm sure the data you quote from the book is much more accurate compare to my imagination based on in-game performance. But I still believe the roll control of your BM FM need a fix. That is because the game engine may present us a very different specification for the right input of FM data. I tested you FM and found MIG 29 can easily drop into a low speed (IAS<300KMH) envelop, where the efforts of aileron cannot beat the tendency of rolling the plane back to Horizonal plane in X-axis. in the meantime, Mig 29 has a roll rate of <10 degrees/second in that envelope. I have watch various MIG 29s in live air shows in china and I believe that does not represent the reality. one additional question is whether the stabilizers of Mig 29 get involved in the roll control. I have no information about it, but i believe they do because mig-23 already has a pair of stabilizers that do it. So you might want to add below lines to your {left/rightstabilizer} SecondaryInputName=ROLL_CONTROL SecondaryInputFactor=0.xx 2. Stabilizers The stabilizers are given realistic deflection angles in you FM definition, that enables mig 29 to perform high AoA maneuvers. However WOX AI cannot handle this well and it keeps making mig29 fall into the envelope that I mentioned above. I believe in real life mig29 pilot will not perform those high AoAs frequently as they suck off lots of energy. I have limited the deflection angle to 10 degrees and found my wingman mig29s already upperdogs WOI stock f-16 under hard settings. Insky_orsin -
MiG-29 new FM
orsin replied to lindr2's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
All, Here is my modified version of FM for MIG 29G based on lindr2's BM FM. Lindr2's model is cool of course, but the roll control is abit too loose and slow. Through tinkering the flight control I have achieved below FM for you to try out. It is slightly advantageous compare to WOI stock F16 (You get a stable 360 degree turn at 5000m in around 20 seconds), and the roll control is as agile as the stock f-16. I have also verified this FM on AI and I found it make MIG 29G very dangerous enemies. Please feel free to let me know your opinion. Insky_orsin -
Bring my SHADOW effects back
orsin posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
First of all, please note i'm not talking about the shader effect on ground or water. I'm talking about the shader effect on aircraft, which casts shadow of missiles to the body, or vice versa. I have recently blew up my very descent PC, which has no Shader capability (ie. dx6 or earlier) and got a state of art one. When I migrate my WOI from the old harddrive and try it on the new PC, I have noticed that it does not show any shader effects at all, not even on the aircraft. I tried changing the graphics option and nothing happened. Anyone has an idea how to bring the effect back? I believe there is a config file somewhere in the directory that controls it but I couldn't figure it out. -

Hi, it does not work. I have tried the shadow as even "unlimited" and no difference compare to "low" -
Bring my SHADOW effects back

BTW, I'm running vista home premium and DX10 video card. I tried an original installation of WOE with OCT 2008B patch and I found the shadow is there. So I'm sure it is not an video card driver issue. -
Is AIDE still an accurate tool?
orsin posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
AIDE is a common tool used to tweak the flight models of jets in SFP series. I'm just wondering if it is accurate if I want to use it for WOI. -

All, I have noticed the flyable mig 23 MF for WOI, which applies nele's WOE envelop definition, shows much weaker acceleration and speed performance compare to its in WOE. With a zero-load flight test I determined the maximum achievable speed between 35000-45000ft is around m1.7 in WOI ,compare to about M2.2 in WOE. It seems the FM system in WOI is much different and will unfortunately affect imported flights from earlier products. what will happen when WOE WOV get patched up to the latest code base?

a step closer to the ideal Mig 23 pit
orsin posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
After a short chat with ArthuR and Gepard I manage to find the missing Mig 23 pit from a dusty corner of the forum. here is some of the work I have done on it. it is, essentially, a much better Mig 23 pit for any variant later than M excluding MS. Which have primitive huds for weapon operation. -

can someone also add the wing- swing indicator which is near the bottom-right corner of the hud? -

well, I gotta say i have not done much on the inis. it is not hard for me to release the ini files that i have modified. The real problem is that you guys will not have access to the original cockpit files which I got from ArthuR and was told sourced from somewhere in SimHQ. While the download section of HQ is down and no one knows who made this pit so far. I will not be able to release the pit file for you guys until someone stand out and say ` Hey I made the pit and allow you guys to put it up on combatace for download... ' the only way to get it now is by PM me and tell me your email. I would also like some of you can fix the wrong open direction of the canopy. I'm not so clever to do this. You will also find the green lens under HUD is too high. Can anyone of you fix it as well? -
Lock down without a warning on RWR?
orsin posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I was a bit of curious to figure out this: I flied a F-15 against a F16 ADF Blk 15 (dont actually remember where it came from, probably the one made by USAFMTL) and I found my RWR has no detection of the F16's radar at all. I tried Su27, Mig23MLD, etc and none respond to the lock on. Who knows how to make an aircraft like that? -

when I fly the F16 itself, the radar seems ok -
Lock down without a warning on RWR?
orsin replied to orsin's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
When I say no warning. it means 1. Throughout the entire game, cannot see the F16 on my RWR screen, no blot at all. 2. No tone at all 3. I was shot down by Sparrow -

thanks for reply. However, sure not a sound issue. I cannot "see" the f16's scanning or tracking on my jet through RWR. -
First FULLY FUNCTIONING Mig-27D PIT!
orsin posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Fully functioning MIG-27D PIT! Video camera+CCIP+Guncross+Ground target indicator on HUD+Russian RWR! The first time I look at the code and try to mod the game. It took me 2 mins to get it done. I import Marcflight's su-27 pit to my Mig-27D folder, modify the .ini s, and it runs damn well... You will have to download Marcflight's su-27 and the Mig-27D mod in download threads, as I have just finish this a few minutes ago and yet to ask for the permission to distribute the 2 mods. 1. Extract the two mods to objects/aircraft 2. Copy the /cockpit/ folder in /su-27/.... to /Mig-27D/..., confirm any overwrite 3. Then download this file and extract to the /Mig-27D/... folder. That's it, enjoy.
