  1. Air Force Officer Careers

Actually, there are platforms that aren't carrier based. P-3C's, C-2's (land on carriers but are actually shore based) and alot of helo's as well. If you don't want hooks you can fly maritime or E-6B TACAMO's. Also, I've been told one of the coolest jobs is helo's flying off "small boys" in the sub-hunter or resupply role. There are actually very few helo's aboard a carrier. Just because your a Naval Aviator it doesn't mean you'll have to fly off a carrier. Stretch
  2. Air Force Officer Careers

I'll second this one on going Navy. At this point I'm in Navy Primary with a VT that is a joint squadron made up of Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. The biggest fear of the Air Force students here is getting to T-38's (trainer for fighters) and then ending up "flying" UAV's. You will get to fly in a cockpit and at this point UAV's are just a single tour deal if your "lucky" enough to get them. However, from what I understand (the word on the street so take it for what it's worth) there will eventually be UAV only pilots who will only fly in a cockpit long enough to learn the ropes before they permanently sit you in front of a video game. It doesn't sound very exciting to me personally but I've heard it creates a pretty good family life if you have one. As for the Navy, there are numerous opportunities to fly as a Pilot or NFO. You can do the Naval Academy, NROTC or OCS (my mode of commision). Each has it's advantages and diadvantages but all can put you in a cockpit if you play your cards right. Also, you'll have the highest probability of getting a flight slot going Navy. I personally went the OCS route which can guarantee you a shot at flight school if your selected. You have to apply via an Officer Recruiting Program but if your selected at least you know where your going once you commision. If you go ROTC or Academy theres no guarantee you'll get anywhere near a cockpit no matter which service you choose. Also, the Navy has a program called BDCP (I'm pretty sure it's still around) where they will pay you as an E-5 while your in college and then send you to OCS once you graduate. It's a good deal as you'll earn leave time, get money while in school so you can concentrate on studying and know what your going to do once you graduate. I highly recomend looking into it. Check out the website www.airwarriors.com for more info on all these sources of commisioning and just remember that if you want to do something bad enough work hard and don't ever give up and you'll probably get there. As far as Navy programs go that will take you a long way in getting selected. Stretch
  3. Yup, thats the one. I've got a picture of it from the balcony too as a matter of fact. I've actaully been to the restoration hanger a few times to look around. The guys that do all the work there are amazing at what they do. They let me walk the flight line and climb into several aircraft as well as just poke around and see what all is there. Normally the only way out on the line is the bus tour and they don't let you get off and walk around. It was pretty nice of them to let me do it. Is your brother waiting for API? I actually tried to get stashed at the Museum but the jobs were few and far between. I lucked out and pretty much never got stashed (1 day jobs normally) so I had a 5 week vacation and spent ALOT of it at the Museum. Over at Whiting I'm so busy with flying I don't have much of a chance to get over there anymore even though I'm only 45 mins away. Maybe this weekend..... Stretch
  4. Just curious as to whether or not there's anymore info on the status of the Skyray. Its been a while and I haven't seen it in the downloads section as of late. It's by far my favorite jet of all time. I get to see the one in Pensacola pretty often and have several pictures of it. The Skyray appeals to me way more than anything else in the National Museum of Naval Aviation which is chocked full of aviation history (outstanding museum by the way, a must for aviation lovers of all types). 5. I'm relatively useless when it comes to modding SFP1 and could use some help. I had WOV on my computer for the carrier ops awhile back but due to a crash I lost the install from my online purchase at Thirdwire and now have reverted back to a very old copy of SFP1. I know carriers can be added to SFP and I'd like to know how. Also, I've seen numerous nice looking carriers from YAP and a site called Capun's Skunk Works. Is there a way to purchase or obtain these ships individually? Is there a way to get copies of the carriers from WOV without having to buy the game again? I like the Vietnam/1960's era so I really liked the SCB-125 carriers. All I'd do are carrier ops so I'd rather not have to buy WOV as all I really did with it any way was bounce in the pattern. Any suggestions? Further, I've tried to add nice looking terrian to SFP1 with no succes. How is this done? I can't remember how I did it in the past. Can I add the high res WOV and WOE terrians that are out there or are these only compatible with their respective games? I liked the high res Vietnam textures and the Jungle addon that went with it in WOV before I lost the game. It really made the game look good. If I could put this in SFP1 that would be great. Also, how does one add the runway upgrade textures available from this site. I can't seem to find the folders to put the files in, any ideas? Last, what weapons packs and effect updates are recomended? I've seen several large packs but don't know what to add. Sorry for the dumb questions. I've picked up this game off and on over the years but each time I dust it off I always forget what I learned from the previous time. Thanks in advance. Stretch
  6. Dumb question but I remember being able to open stock missions and change around carriers and aircraft for WOV. I can't seems to open them up anymore. Its been awhile since I messed with this and I guess I've forgotten or maybe deleted something to open them. I have 7-zip but I thought you could just open them in word pad or something simple and change stuff around. Word is telling me it can't open them. I don't want to get into full mission building, merely to change the carriers and aircraft from the current takeoff/landing missions like I use to. How is this done again? Stretch
  7. I'm very new to the forum and the SF/WoV arena overall so I'm not too sure about alot of things yet. I was curious if anybody had a take-off/landing mission like the default ones in WoV for practice. I wanted to mod it to make it an F8E Crusader launching from the Essex Class Carrier (CV-14?) instead of the USS Independence. Any body have one like this or know where to find one or can somebody put one together easily and post it? Thanks for any ideas/help. Stretch
  8. Ok, I figured it out. Wow! That was really easy. thanks again for the help guys. Stretch
  9. I purchased WoV from Third Wire's web site tonight (5/28) and loaded it all up. It works great. I then DL'd the 2 Service Packs from their site and now the game will not load. I have checked to make sure directories are correct and even DL'd the patches from 2 different sites just in case I got a corrupt version but no luck. I had a thought though: Is Third Wire selling the latest version of the game with patches already installed? Its all I can think of. The moment SP 5.??.06 (the big patch) is installed the game no longer loads up. I get an error message that says it need to close. Suggestions perhaps? Thanks in advance. Stretch
  10. Cool, thanks for all the help. Thats why it crashed then, trying to add patches after its already patched. I wouldn't even load up actually. So I figured something was wrong. Thanks again. Stretch
  11. I'm I bit new to SFP1 after having picked it up several years ago and never really playing it. I've been looking around on the net and have discovered this sim has a ton of support. I've been looking to get into it a little as I really like the 50's and 60's time frame. I have a few questions that are probably general info but I'm not sure about it. Here goes: I've got SFP1 (non-Walmart with patch and service pack installed and working) and want to know if all the terrrains, carriers and other freeware add-ons and downloads for all the other thirdwire stuff can be added to it? Basically can you use SFP1 to build all the flight sims available (WW1, WWII and the newer European stuff) or do you have to by each one individually and then build them up? Do the ships, like carriers, actually move or are they static like FS2004? Do you need to add arrestor wires to the carriers or are they all inclusive in the download? Basically, I'd like to do WW1 and the Cold War, Modern with carriers so I need to know if you can use SFP1 as the base to all these things or if I should get a different version that may be better and build it up say WOV or First Eagles? I'd like to keep what I have and build it up if possible but any info ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance. Stretch
