Modern UK terrain?
lazboy replied to mppd's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Certainly would be interesting to fly some low level strike missions, unfortunately at the moment we are still awaiting the arrival of a Buccanear although I believe there is one in the works. Lazboy -

I must admit to being conflicted as well like NFG i have for some while wanted to intercept soviet aircraft over the North Sea with Lightnings and Phantoms but would also like the idea of a fully uptodate map that takes into account the new alignments in Europe and an expanding NATO. We almost need 3 versions of this new map: Version (1) WW2 era that would allow the recreation of famous encounters over northern Europe. Version(2) Cold War era that would include those bases that were active during that period but which have been subsequently closed, such as those used by the USAFE and the Warsaw Pact. Version (3) The currently being created modern northern european map that reflects the current orientation of countries such as Poland. Having created the basic modern map I guess that it could then be adapted to fulfil the other two requirements by the addition or deletion of bases and targets. But in the first instance lets get one up and running and then see what could be done. Lazboy -
Modern UK terrain?

I love how this initial concept has grown and evolved into an exciting concept which will hopefully cover a very important area of operations that has to now been seriously neglected. By including scandinavia and the low countries we will have the oppurtunity to fly some of our favourite aircraft in some different liveries and in their home environments. I am looking forward to flying Finish and Swiss Hornets, Norwegian,Dutch and Polish F-16'S as well as a wide variety of other aircraft in their natural habitats. In order to assist Baltika I have put together a schedule of all the major operational airbases in all the countries covered by the new map giving each ones geographical coordinates. The schedule includes only the major operational bases at which aircraft are actually deployed and does not include helicopter bases, minor air stations or reserve fields but is hopefully fairly comprehensive. As Baltika says if you have any ideas for things to include or that you would like to see then PM Baltika or post your ideas here. Thanks again Baltika for taking the lead on this project and for all your efforts on our behalf. lazboy -
You'll be alright go for it my cousins when they visit from America always have problems with the concept of roundabouts , but just remember to give way to traffic coming from the right and look out for speed cameras they are everywhere. Duxford won't disappoint and will be worth the effort. Lazboy

Skippy Now that the area covered by the map has been expanded it looks as though it should be possible after all to include Yeovilton which should make you happy. Lazboy -
On a map the distances may no appear that far but in the UK we do not have the vast highway network that exists in the USA, most Americans who visit the Uk for the first time are surprised at just how narrow our normal roads are and how busy they are and how fast we drive on them. I for one wouldn't consider driving from London to Glasgow and back in a single day depending on the traffic it could take the best part of a day one way. Lazboy

Well I live in Sussex on the coast of England less than an hours drive from Farnborough and within easy driving distance of Farnborough in the South there is only Tangmere Aviation Museum which is just outside Chichester and based at a former Battle of Britain air station. It mainly concerntrates on early british jets and the Battle of Britain and is certainly worth a look. http://www.tangmere-museum.org.uk/index.php Overall the best and most comprehansive aircraft collection is at Duxford in Cambridgeshire which would be more likely a day trip from Farnborough the Imperial War Museum in central London is also worth a visit if you make it to London. http://duxford.iwm.org.uk/ Duxford http://london.iwm.org.uk/?PHPSESSID=5e8488...3c9f69872523a7d Imperial War Museum The weather over here in the south of England is somewhat unsettled at the moment plenty of almost tropical showers with humid afternoons so dress accordingly. Modern UK terrain?

I reckon like us Brits there are a fair few members in Belguim, Holland and Denmark who would appreciate being able to fly from their own airfields and i fancy some dissimilar training flying F-16 from airbases in Norway and Holland as well as elsewhere. Kirsten I have the principal operational airbases in Holland being Leeuwarden Air Base at 53°13′43″N 05°45′38″E Volkel Air Base at 51°39′26″N 05°41′27″E are there any others that could warrant appearing on the map? What I particularly like is that has it appears that he has managed to incorporate some coastal areas of Northern Europe that includes Belguim, Holland and Denmark which should allow for some of these countries principal airbases to be included on the map, there would also appear room to include one of Swedens southern airbases Satenas at which Grippens are based. One of two airbases in each of the european countries at the base of the map would allow even more options for intercepts over the North Sea. Lazboy -

One of the best sources I have found regarding the location and details of current and past RAF bases is Wikipedia which not only provides details of the operational history of each airbase, but the units located there, their role and even provides the bases geographical coordinates which should make it easier to locate them accurately on the new map. I have provided below some links to the relervant pages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_RAF_stations http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Coningsby Hopefully this information will be of some assistance. I agree with JimmyBib it would be a great deal of work to extend the map from the GUIP gap down to Spain but Spain, Portugal and France could justify its own map in due course once the Modern UK terrain is completed perhaps covering the area shown on the following map which also includes North Africa. Having generated a great deal of positive interest in a modern UK terrain is there a terrain modeler available to create such a map on our behalf, from the previous replies there would be a great deal of practicable support with regards information on the location etc of airbases, towns etc? Lazboy -
I agree with Nicky on this one if you think London was friendly next time venture out of London and the big cities into the rural countryside and other areas its completely different and the welcome is every bit as warm and the pubs are as real as they come. I have only been to Washington State but it was on a different scale to anything here in the UK the scenary was awesome and the hills were higher than our highest mountains. Lazboy

Modern UK terrain?
lazboy replied to mppd's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
We are getting a bit of a consensus as to what we would like to see included on such a map and what kind of missions it would be possible to fly. I like the concept as it is an area in which so much has happened in the past from WW2 through the Cold War right up to modern times. On the plan I tried to include some of mainland Europe, particularly the low countries, Belguim, Holland and Denmark as that would give us even more possibilities and aircraft to fly. The map could be expanded to include artic Norway and Finland but I am not sure if it could stretch as far as Russian territory. All we need now is someone to take our enthusiasum and create what has the protential to be a very playable map and incorporate on it NFG's house which I have no doubt will become one of the most visited spots on any map. I was thinking along the lines of a map that is bordered on oneside by the east coast of Great Britain with the North Sea squarely in the middle and Norway and Scandinavia on the opposite side, see the attached map. Lazboy -

I would certainly be interested in a UK beta terrain as I suspect would a number of other UK based members, I have always wanted to be able to recreate the interceptions over the North Sea of Soviet aircraft by the venerable Lightning so time and Real Life allowing go for it, it would be much appreciated. I was a fan of the Hammerheads in Space Above and Beyond and imported the series on DVD from America when it was first released as it was never officially released here in the UK. What about Crusade that had potential but only lasted a single series as it suffered from the curse of Gary Cole who I believe hasn't managed yet to headline a series thats managed to go more than a single series, American Gothic, Wanted and Crusade to name but a few! There appears to be something wrong with the link in the download section for the Mirage 2000 when you click on it you download the Tornado IDS not the Mirage 2000 beta! Lazboy -

Nicknames don't necessarily reflect the wearer back in the day I used to have the handle 'Fat Bastard' named after the Austin Powers Character even though i was as skinny as a rake and not even Scottish but nethertheless it stuck throughout my time with the team. Lazboy -
According to the BBC Israel has carried out an exercise that appears to have been a rehearsal for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, US officials have told the New York Times. More than 100 Israeli F-15 and F-16 fighter jets took part in manoeuvres over the eastern Mediterranean and over Greece in the first week of June, US officials said. Several US officials briefing the New York Times said the exercise was intended demonstrate the seriousness of Israel's concern over Iran's nuclear activities, and its willingness to act unilaterally. The exercise involved Israeli helicopters that could be used to rescue downed pilots, the newspaper reported. The helicopters and refuelling tankers flew more than 1,400km (870 miles), roughly the distance between Israel and Iran's main uranium enrichment plant at Natanz. A spokesman for the Israeli military said the air force "regularly trains for various missions in order to confront and meet the challenges posed by the threats facing Israel".
