Questions about sqaudrons in 1918 for the experts
MK2 posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Ok let me ask the experts out there a few questions. These do not necessarily relate to OFF only but I would like to find out the info . 1. In 1918 what French escadrilles and British squadrons would have been the most likely to have been involved in a Combat that the 94th or 27th American aero squadron would have been involved in ? 2. What German Jastas opposed the 94th and 27th mostly? 3. As far as airplane make up within the squadrons. I know Germans could have had Fokker DVIIs and a few Dr1s (a mix as an example) in an individual unit but how about the British squadrons? Was it strictly just SE5a and Camels or was there ever a mix? How about French? mostly SPADS? or did they throw in a Nieuport etc. -

Dawn Patrol (TSR) miniatures campaign pictures.
MK2 replied to MK2's topic in WWI Flight Sim Discussion
Ok here is more info on the Campaign I am running including the Squadrons pictures below (The plane mix IS NOT HISTORICAL but my game group felt that variety would be better than strict accuracy due to all the cool miniatures represented). here is the exact email sent out to the group with real player names edited....we are actually toying with new rules we made up for Planes including serial numbers, replacements and how well the pilot knows the plane he has on any given day (helps with crash lands etc). Maybe someone can forward this thread to Mike Carr! Ok guys Dawn Patrol 2009 is organized and here! I want to play this Saturday starting at XXXXX my house. If you can't make it , do not worry, we have a system for pilot experience advancement even though you are not here (kind of like World of War craft double XP when you have been gone a long time etc.) For those who have never played , Dawn patrol can be played with 2 people or 10, so the more the merrier. Let's have some patience this first time as we all need to relearn some of the rules but as most of you remember, once you get the hang of it it's as easy as riding a bike. This email is about choosing your pilots. If you just want to sit back and not worry about choosing anything, we can assign you a pilot on Saturday...but don't forget your scarf and goggles and who knows who you will be flying for! If you do want to get more detailed about your personal character and pilot read on. We have worked on the squadrons and all characters (pilots) are rolled up. This campaign game has been designed with absolute flexibility to maximize the fun. There are currently 4 Squadrons: 1. Germany Jasta 11 2. France Escadrille 3 3. America 94th Aero Squadron 4. Britain 203 Squadron RAF There are currently 3 slots all ready taken : 1. Kalman Berthold Jasta 11 2. James Cunningham 94th Aero squadron 3. Hans-Joachim Werner Jasta 11 So respectively the two organizers command the German and American squadrons and I have chosen a German pilot as well (after everyone picks , I'll go in again and choose a French and British). Anyone can play any country they wish on any game night. You can have 4 active pilots one in each squadron or even 4 active in the same squadron, the choice is yours. Missions and kills matter....as an example if you play with 0 missions 0 kills you can't even tail someone during the tailing phase. So choose your pilots wisely. That being said don't be afraid to choose a 0-0 pilot as your role playing reward will be much greater if he succeeds and the commanders will surely protect you in the air (as occurred in real life), you can survive. The position for British commander and French commander are open, if you wish to command a squadron you will have other responsibilities ( commanders are keeping track of individual planes as well, serial numbers etc. which will matter for replacements as well as towards pilot experience flying the same plane etc.). Do not feel obligated to command a squadron because the slots are open, the organizers can do the French and British as well but if you want that juicy 4 kill French Capitaine still available you will have other responsibilities. I would love to have some other American flyers and I will make sure you get your own flight and a good pilot if you join (same goes for Jasta 11) Commanders will also choose who goes up and on what missions etc. I include the roster and the maps of where the squadrons are located for extra historical flavor. -

Here is another board being painted (Trench board) and the completed original Dawn Patrol repaint -
I'm new to the Dr1. It seems whenever I leave the joystick in neutral the plane wants to zoom climb. I find myself constanly having to compensate by flying with joystick in a half dive position. Is this normal?

Questions about sqaudrons in 1918 for the experts

Thanks for all the responses guys, I finally just did it by going into OFF and researching the maps, dates and squadrons..worked well. I think I have what I need now. -
Just when I was about to give up, cursing...
MK2 replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Nice read Olham, thank you for sharing. -
It was fun in RB 3D but in real life they had that annoying tendency to shed the fabric on a wing in a dive. Many American pilots lost their lives or almost did due to that flaw initially.

Seems like a great tool guys but I can't get it to work. it comes up "error" almost everything I try except aerodromes and then no correlated date. -
Patch 1.26 observations and comments
MK2 replied to Winston DoRight's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
After playing all day (siggi DiD /WTL) and getting one confirmed and having SEVEN about to be confirmed and dying!!! AAARRGGHH!! I can honestly say that 1.26 vastly improves the game. I saw , explosions, flat spins, wings coming off, and straight down plummets trailing thick black smoke for wingmen and enemy...it really makes the furballs come to life! -
Try what I try in a SPAD 13 against Fokker DVIIs and DR1s 1. Do not engage if they have height advantage. If they do, let them pass and extend form the fight first. 2. Only turn once maybe two times when tailing an enemy plane and firing (in patch 1.26 that is all you might need) extend instead , leave the area a bit, look around and re engage on a distracted camel. if you are being followed, choose when to turn back in and drag the camel over a friendly flak or machine gun trap (if you see lots of AA going up , friendly AA, stop right there and engage for a few turns , then extend again etc.) 3. Boom and zoom if you have height advantage. Dive in, shoot then climb, climb, climb and trade the dive energy for height, rinse and repeat.

I agree it's a big improvement!
-
Over 50 that did it. I adjust now after take off and all is golden. I just had a 1 kill pilot with 7 claims in waiting to get confirmed get shot down , so it hurts but at least I'm flying better.
-
Going to try it. The bird is a beast in a turning dogfight but a handful everywhere else. The reason I asked is because I had one misison prior to 1.26 and I just did not remember than . I was wondering if somehting in 1.26 made it that way.

Patch 1.26 observations and comments
MK2 replied to Winston DoRight's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I noticed the pending numbers (the mysterious ones) on my claims are way down...could be coincidence. I also downed 4 SPAD 7s in one misison but it only let me fill out claim for two (I saw the different messages that I had destroyed all 4 planes and my wingman and groundfire did not steal the kill). I also downed 2 Sopwith Camels and got no claim form. Just two wierd things after patch...could be coincidence. I am getting a lot more kills now after 1.26 (obviously) -
man this is so cool. We finally decided in allowing DiD/WTL correct?

How to avoid certain mission types (German campaign)
MK2 replied to Geier's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
You can set advance campaign manually in workshop and when you see a mission you don't want, just advance and it moves to the next flight of the day next mission. -
After flying for a month for the 94th and 27th aero squadron (since OFF 3's release). I decided to give the other side a go and chose Jasta 36 (primarily because I liked the blue skin on the Dr1 for that Jasta) and chose 100 realism ( DiD/WTL...using pause to snap some pictures). I had a scamble mission from the get go and all I can say is I now have an understanding of why I was shot down so many times in turning dogfights with the SPAD 13 (yes boom and zoom only works when using the SPAD 13). The french pilot I engaged turned with me and was shot down promptly . I only had about 8 or 9 kills (non balloons) in the SPAD 13 in a real time month (still have one pilot active) and I get a kill my first time up in the Dr1. It is a marvelous plane to fly low to the gorund, very safe and really has some zip. The only thing was trying to keep a steady aim when the guns were barking. It took every bit of flying skill I have as well as concentration to keep it on target. Ok I am off to have a drink in the German duty room to see how the other half has been living.... enjoy the pics:

The providence on the sketch is rock solid (highly documented piece in my collection) . He sketched it and claimed 2 Fokker DVIIs that day . I just have never ran across the hardcover of the book. Great info on the name , I was able to obatin the last used hard cover listed on amazon just now . I can't wait to get it (and find out) . thanks again. Do you want us to change your user name?
