OFF P4 SCENERY - Another taster
themightysrc replied to Polovski's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Well, I have to say, that's quite impressive. More impressive than the cows - although, that's pretty impressive - is the impression that is left that one is contemplating a Turner or Constable landscape. If this is to be the P4 standard, then I will be delighted. I was always impressed with the clouds in OFF: they appear to be sultry, oppressive and imperious in the same instant, and, to my mind, resemble real cloud formations rather better than any other sim I've played. As I say, if this is the standard you are building to - and much of the reskinning and cockpit screencaps seem to support this - then P4 will an absolute feast. The only problem I have is the extra load on the machine. I would be extremely grateful if you'd let me know your machine specs so I can gauge whether I have a fighting chance of running OFF's next iteration. Cheers, Si -
Very pretty indeed - hats off to you Sanders old chap...

OT: What else are you playing right now besides OFF?
themightysrc replied to Javito1986's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I can't match all you bods. I constantly recycle my existing collection, hence in the moments when I'm not OFFing or trying to learn Java, I'll relax with either the Battleground series (Napoleonic and ACW), John Tiller's own excellent Napoleonic series covering 1809, or Talonsoft games, which, I would say are without doubt consummate games. I always wanted Squad Leader as a youth, but couldn't afford it, so Eastern Front, Western Front and Rising Sun plugged that gap very nicely. As an old fart, I occasionally have to foray even further back in time, and I have the CPC6128 emulator on my PC which allows me to enjoy, if that's the word, Tau Ceti, Lords of Midnight and other blasts from my student days. All jolly good fun, and a world - literally - away from getting regularly filled in by Hun scouts and Archie. Cheers, Si -
Whilst it's certainly a very enthusiastic review, I'm not sure that's either impartial or exhaustive. Having to buy extra aircraft seems a little mean to me - and from the review I have no idea how many are supplied 'free'. Is it 2? Is it more? Also, the rather sketchy nature of much of the review also leaves me with the feeling that I've not read very much other than a panegyric to RoF. Certainly, it's known widely that the current SP is rather less than satisfactory, many of the claims by the makers are not challenged or even explored, and the lack of multiseat craft is never even mentioned, nor the dearth of craft from the early periods of the war. A WWI flight sim that has no RE8, no Roland CII, no BE2 nor the FE2b? Really? And this is meant to rate 9.85 out of 10? Equally, I feel that any reviewer worth his or her salt should not be quoting breathlessly any 'jam tomorrow' sentiments as supplied by the game's producer: that strikes me as being completely partial. Tell us what's there and what's missing, not what's promised. For a reviewer to tell me "be patient, it's coming" or "OK, it's in the pipeline" or any other such sentiment does, I'm afraid, lead me to the conclusion that the reviewer in question hasn't gone in an been completely impartial as to the weaknesses - as well as the strengths - of the game. I have to confess, I found the review to be rather too gushing to reside very much faith in it.

"still waiting ,hopefully not to long now boo hoo" Adger, I'm in the UK, just near Manchester, and I can tell you mine arrived within 7 days of ordering in from the States. Relax and enjoy watching Stoke or Port Vale! Cheers, Si

New to these forums and flight sims
themightysrc replied to Shiloh's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Welcome to Death Valley, Flanders. I would heartily recommend that you spend a good while learning how to configure the standard CFS3.1 - I assume you have the game already, 'cos you'll need it?! - to run optimally on your rig. I arsed about with OFF when I'd got it, and I was appalled at how badly it ran and how the colours were gash, etc. Well, of course, it was my own fault for not carefully pored through the readme's concerning tweaking the CFS config files. Once I'd done that, it made an enormous difference to the FPS and suchlike. Didn't stop me getting killed repeatedly, like, but you can't have everything. Speaking of getting killed: yes, you will. A lot. It's best to learn the sim with everything set to realistic except pilot death, at least to begin with (in my humble). Otherwise you'll end up with a stack of dead pilots scattered all over the floor beside you - I know I did, and it was quite painful, as I was losing pilots after 1, 2, 3 or at most, 4 or 5 flights. It's a brutal game, as you'd expect, and the AI won't show you any mercy whatsoever. When you've finally plucked up the courage to start a campaign, you'd be very well advised to start in early or late 1916, before the real butchery kicks in, as you'll met fewer foes and they won't be quite so mental. Mine's a pint of Pendle Witch, ta muchly. Cheers, Si -
"Other classmates praised Ben’s actions on Facebook. Lee Pritchard wrote: “Who ever the mom was and ben hudson are life savers just watching them doing what they did disregarding their own safety was pure bravery thank you.” Just noticed this from the linked article from the Torygraph. Can we please not adopt the word 'mom' in the UK? What on Earth is wrong with 'mum'? And while I'm at it, please beat into your teenage sons and daughters that the Ozzie inquisitive sentence ending is an absolute abomination to anyone with a measurable IQ. For f***'s sake, the Great Vowel Shift of the middle ages was a bummer to handle, and then, people yacking on as though everything's a bloody question????

Well, when it comes down to it, all generations turn out people who are either antisocial, or else have something about them that marks them out. Read your local paper every week and you'll see it, although it'll probably be reported in such a way as to make you wonder the point they're making! I have a very profound respect for teenagers who become politically stroke civically active. They are the exception. At the age of 17, all I wanted to do was get leathered, smoke hash, play D&D and cop off with a good looking 6th form girl from my year - does this ring any bells out there? Hence, when people the age I was - and I should add, I actually was studying British Government and Politics as an A level at the time! - become that interested and engaged, I'll tip my hat, had I one.

I got OFF running :YAY!:...My pilot is now a prisoner..:poop!:
themightysrc replied to Lewie's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
A nice intro! Pleased that you've got it running. You may want to have a look at the mission mods that have been posted up for the 1915/16 periods. They might make your gaming more enjoyable. I like the idea of inducing stalls in EIIIs by out manouvering them - I'll have to try that! Cheers, Si -
Did I install the game correctly? Sorry I'm REAL new.
themightysrc replied to stefnuts's topic in WOFF 1 2 3 / UE - General Help
Hi Stefnuts, It sounds like you've installed it correctly. The '[' and ']' keys will wind your viewpoint in and out (or out and in, can't remember which does what, as I've mapped them to my joystick). That should improve your field of view. I strongly recommend TrackIR, as the mucking about with hat switches and all that is a pain, and you simply need to be able to keep your eyes looking for those Huns/Tommies, rather than looking for keys. It's the best money you can spend (well, after buying OFF!), since it's so much more intuitive, and, besides, it's nice to lean out of the plane a bit and have a quick gander. SPADs, incidentally, have a terrible field of view - try some different aircraft. The Sopwith Triplane is excellent in that respect. Frankly, I wouldn't bother with the 12 vs 12 dogfight that you've described from Quick Scenarios - too much like an invite to lose a pilot if you're new to the game. If you must then at least tick 'pilot never dies', unless you like creating pilots every 10 minutes! Far better is to fly via Quick Combat, as it offers you the chance to customise everything you can think of, more or less, including, importantly, skill levels of your opponents, what they're flying, how many of them, time of day and year, etc, etc. A far better way of introducing yourself to the aircraft of OFF, particularly as you can choose 'free flight' for an aircraft you've not flown before, so you don't have to learn about an aircraft's foibles (ie, the Alb DIII's habit of shedding wings, the Camel's torque reaction) whilst mixing it with the enemy. When you've done QC for a bit, you'll be more than equipped to start a campaign. Do read the Survival In The Air (SIA) series of articles here on CombatAce. There's some good stuff to be picked up. Right then: it's your round, Capt. Neophyte! Mine's a pint of Pendle Witch, thankyouverymuch. Cheers, Si -
A cry for help, even though I don't recognise it
themightysrc replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hasse, That was very decent of you. It would be easy enough to simply stay silent and let yet another disappointed RoFer ditch his copy forever, particularly given which forum we're on here. May I suggest that you bob over to SimHQ, and post that nugget up for people on dual cores (like myself) who might well benefit from it? Whatever my overall impression of RoF, I'd like it to make an impact in the market and this would surely help some people. It's just a shame that the authors of the game hadn't sussed out what is apparently such an easy fix. Cheers, Si -
Very nice indeed - the lighting is very subtle in the first picture. I take the ones of the De Havilland were taken during a cloudy day? It'd be very cool to see shadows on the aircraft itself, where applicable. Perhaps that's there and the weather conditions didn't suit it, or the sun angles all to cock? Any hints on that Pol? Cheers, Si

Further to Olham's excellent recent thread about one's emotional input to OFF, and to announce that I'M BACK YOU BUGGERS, I thought I'd open this one. When I'm flying - inevitably in some two seater deathtrap - and have the TAC on, I do get a slight, er, puckering moment when the TAC lights up with craft unknown. Now, I know all the rules and wheezes for identifying them, but I can't help having and slightly trouser moistening moment when I see those horrid little dots pop up. Am I alone in this - being a twin seat jockey - or do all of you brave, bold scout pilots get that same, bad, feeling?

That "oo-er missus.." moment
themightysrc replied to themightysrc's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hello all, and many thanks for the welcome back! I'm most grateful for your warmth and friendship. The reason I can now do a bit on here is that my future course is becoming a little clearer - I'm on a Java programming course, at the end of which, I hope, I'll be able to bag a decent job. More importantly for OFFing, I'm not frantically scanning jobs sites all day long and whoring myself out to companies who apparently aren't interested. There's a lesson there. WRT the posts thus far. I generally fly with TAC on, as I feel that it represents the other senses that a computer game - no matter how sophisticated - cannot do. Maybe a sixth sense if you like. Mr. Ho, you will probably be pleased to hear that I've started flying again as Major Timm, and you can expect some more of his deathless prose in due course, assuming he doesn't get topped in his RE8. I've missed flying and everyone's company, and I'd just like to say how touched I am to welcomed back so roundly. You're a top bunch of people. Cheers, Si -
How far goes your imagination?
themightysrc replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
"i still remember their names and their kill numbers" On the question of names; one of my peeves about OFF are the names of other pilots in the squadron - not the aces, etc: they're spot on. I'm looking at one of my (dead) pilots - Lt. Ted de Baer, 29 RFC, in May 16 and his copilots are Landon Bristow, Roman Clinton and Lenny Ethelstan! Names for copilots in American squadrons are hardly any more believable, and, obviously, I'm not in any position to comment on the French and German names, so perhaps others can comment on those. In terms of the original question, I think that everyone here knows by now that I'm the worst coward in the skies, so I stick to the mission and absolutely avoid trouble. This is imperative when you're a BE2/RE8 pilot. I only ever fight when attacked, preferring absolutely to dodge enemy scouts and Archie. Anyone who does differently wants their bumps felt. As to physical manifestations; it's most massive sighs of relief when I get down to terra firma unscathed (well, alive, at least). i don't get any of the symptoms reported by others, although on the odd occasions I've played MP, that always ratchets up the ante, but mainly because my appalling flying and negligible leadership and navigational skills are laid bare for everyone to see. Thankfully, MPers tend to be very kind and never take the piss, despite having every right to do so. Wayfarer - most sorry to hear about Arthur. He was truly a most singular character, well in the traditions of the RFC. You have my condolences, and your wife has my sympathy for her tragic loss. Cheers, Si -
Popular Music: Your absolute No. 1 all-time greatest Top Hit
themightysrc replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I've read this thread with interest, and I've spent some time reflecting upon my taste in music, and, of course, that No. 1 killer song. The answer - naturally - is that you can't really call it without saying " Yes, but..." and then you're into the maze that is your own personal musical taste. If ever there was a battleground - other than politics - then I would say that music is that ground. Anything that stirs you to mention it as your favourite must, indeed, be a strong and enduring feeling. People will never give ground on that. So, I've had a think about the pieces of music that I adore - ranging from hardcore reggae, through trashy 70s disco, tragically heavy metal, "intellectual" prog rock, classical - where the composer wore a white wig and is now dead -, minimalist music (to which I'm strangely attached), through the indy revolution of the 80's onwards, flitting with elements of hip-hop - although rarely, as I dislike misogyny - and have finally fetched up with two songs, and I cannot decide which is the better three minute trashing/encapsulation of my life. Here they both are. I really hope that you enjoy them both, because over the years they have meant a lot to me. BTW, it's nice to be back posting. Enjoy. -
Hi Shred, Is this any use to you? Cheers, Si

That is simply a work of art. If I didn't know better I'd say that you actually gone back in time with your camera and taken a (beautiful) snap. Bravo!

HI Wayfarer, It's mid/late 1917 for 12 RFC - I can't speak for other units, and it's actually harder to survive! Still, the prospect of Brisfits is a comfort... I'm very well, thank you, and I've been enjoying your posts very much indeed. You have a very keen self-deprecating sense of humour that actually makes me laugh out loud when I'm reading. I trust that you're well and prospering. How's the campaign in the BE getting on? Sweating yet? Cheers, Si

Did you ever let your opponent go?
themightysrc replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Well, good luck with it - I hope you get it. As for me, I'm enrolled with the Home Learning College and start a java programming course in a few days. With reference to the rest of your post, I'll give it a 'wait and see'. Who would have thought a mere few months ago that the people of the MIddle East would overthrow their oppressive rulers so adroitly? Don't doubt that that what has happened there can happen here. It can. -
"Hey Wayfarer, how about posting a 'report from the front' every now and then. It would be great to read about early-war life in a B.E2 squad (with or without 'scramble' missions!) " Hi TH, if you browse through the reports from the front thread - easily the best read on this forum - you'll find that I've posted multiple times concerning being a BE2c pilot in campaign from 1915 to 1917. My pilot is now onto RE8s, which is horrible, but there are a few tips and hints in my earlier posts, should you ever feel the suicidal need to run a career in the BE2c. It's not all doom and gloom, I assure you, and if you do so, you'll learn a lot of worthwhile habits to help you survive in any squadron, and at any period of the war. Cheers, Si

Did you ever let your opponent go?
themightysrc replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
"Socialism is a fantastic Ideal...just doesn't work in practice that's all." It's difficult to make any socioeconomic system 'work' if the prevailing tide is in favour of a system that is antithetical to it. Recognise that and you suddenly start seeing things fall into place. Damn - I've replied again! OK, UK_W, look at it this way: we're in the throes of horrendous economic times here in the UK. I've lost my job and I know that you've had a rough deal up in Newcastle - something that will soon be played out more widely in the North East. Now, ask yourself - where, on balance, does the blame lie for this? Did you invent investment vehicles for the unwary that made you millions, but allowed you to escape unscathed? Did you unleash a massive Ponzi scheme on Geordieland? Did your family and your mates? I would guess not. But it's you (and me, as a now ex-local government employee) who will feel the effects, not them. And very few people pontificating ever even stop to ask why this is so. I've got very (very) pointed opinions on the subject, but I'll try not to wheel them out here, unless people repeatedly tell me that neoliberal capitalism - of the type we've suffered since the early 80s - is the one true way, in which case I will respectfully observe that the world wide financial meltdown of 2008/9 had absolutely eff all to do with socialism. I just wonder why people who criticise socialism so roundly, and yet have never experienced it, cannot recognise that the nature of the economic system that we live under - international capitalism - is simply making them increasingly skint and insecure. Look around you - under the watch of which economic system has Newcastle become the way it is? <hops off soapbox> BTW - how did you get on with that job at the airport? Did you get it, and, if you did, do you like it? -
Did you ever let your opponent go?
themightysrc replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
BH, I suspect we'll have to differ on this issue, but I would simply point out that in a world that is driven primarily and fairly overtly by a non-socialist system, countries adopting even the mildest form of socialism were and are likely to be viewed with suspicion by countries that don't or haven't done so and thus the odds tend to be stacked against them. FWIW, in my opinion the best way forward is a mixed economy and society that harnesses the best of capitalism but tempers and tames it with a socialist architecture to ensure that the majority gain the benefits where otherwise it might lead to rather more inequality and, more importantly, social division. But having ignored my own request to park the subject, I will now do so and won't derail the thread further. -

themightysrc replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
"Socialism is the timeless delusion of educated youth so I imagine there were quite a few kindred spirits in the mess" BH, you're trolling a little here, so can we park it? The point that - regardless of your political affiliation - is that somebody turning up in the officers' mess with outspoken left wing views would not have been looked upon with unbridled enthusiasm as 'one of us'. my point about his nationalistic credentials is that this would have seasoned and made more palatable any sense of socialism, particularly given the number of Irishmen who volunteered, as Mannock did, to serve for the British Empire - a body for whom he must have, at best, have held mixed feelings.
