A new show stopper - help requested
themightysrc replied to themightysrc's topic in WOFF 1 2 3 / UE - General Help
Hi Lima (and everyone else), Such is my obsession with this set of ones and zeroes, I couldn't just lt it lie, so I copied the contents off the OFF installation DVD via my missus' PC (bless her) to a USB drive, and now have all these files not only installed on my PC (Yah! Go me!) but also on the hard disk of my PC (hurrah, etc..). What I need now are: 1. The order in which I load up the OFF patches (I've got HitR, so all patches for that are needed too), and which ones I'll need, and, more importantly, 2. Having patched (as far as I can tell) CFS3 to 3.1 (which I'll save off), I've still got this bollocks about my hardware not supporting Directx8, when I know for a fact it was working with this hardware less than a week ago, which I'm guessing was DirectX9 or maybe more. Has anyone else had this, and how did you solve this? If any of the OFF mods are reading - please help. I've managed to get OFF back, which is wonderful, but this ridiculous CFS3/Directx8 message (and shutdown) is deeply frustrating. I know that it's not your doing, but this program (CFS3) did work, although when I first installed it, I will admit it was a poxy video card which I subsequently replaved with the best that I could afford with my rubbish rig and restricted monies. In fact, any and all suggestions gratefully received: I just want to get back up there again... Cheers, SI -

Well. I did it. Full reformat of the hard drive, having pulled off as much data as I could, including HitR and the various patches. Really thought this would be OK. I've loaded CFS3 - it's complaining about the lack of DirectX8 - but that's the least of my problems. I reloaded OFF3 dvd into the drive - and it can't find any files whatsoever on the dvd. None. Empty dvd as far as it's concerned. So farewell not on Major Vic Timm, but also, apparently, OFF at all. At the moment, I'm so pissed off that I really don't know how to react to all of this. I had, until late last week, OFF patched up perfectly and working as well as it ever has. Now I've got absolutely sod all. No OFF at all. Any ideas on miracles? -

Thanks Pol - I'll check that out, particularly as I still have an ongoing (but containable) problem with svchost.exe going bananas on a regular basis. Perhaps a full reformat and reinstall will turn out to be the answer. -
"the idea of Political Youth Camp is still scary from any side. I can visualize a Climate Change Youth Camp." I suspect it was rather more like a weekend conference sort of thing, except with the great outdoors as an incentive and draw. Oh, and of course, a homicidal right wing xenophobe armed to the teeth with automatic weaponry.

I'm sorry, but I don't quite understand the point you think you're making. This nutter was avowedly anti any form of multiculturalism - of any form of live and let live. FFS, he posted the equivalent of Mein Kampf full of mad toilfoil hat theories about Europe being overrun with muslims, and then goes out and guns down - presumably nominally Christian white Labour party youth members. Wow, what a brave little crusader he is, eh? What the f*** point do you think you're making? He's f***ing mad and, more to the point, he's acted upon a collection of utterly mad, racist, islamophobic tropes that I only ever see rolled out by fellow travellers. If you're unsurprised that far right nutters are well capable of insanity and violence, at least we have one point of agreement. But your other point is bilge.

Thanks Lima33 - I'll have a think about that. I might just reload HitR and if that helps. And I guess there's always OBD support.... -
Hi all, I've been having a problem of late - I've lost sound in OFF. I'm on XP 32 bit with SP3 installed, and when I run Windows with other stuff, it's fine, lots of lovely sound. When I run OFF, no miaow, no drum rolls, bugger all. And of course, in game sounds and effects have all gone too. I'm tempted to ascribe the problem to svchost.exe, as it shows abnormally high levels of CPU use and needs killing to stop the PC grinding into the dirt. I've read that this dark, mysterious little piece of Micro$oft code can be used by other programs to launch Bad Stuff, and I suspect this is where the problem really lies, having read around the problem on t'internets. I run Malwarebytes Antimalware and Free AVG (both most current versions), but still the problem persists. I should add that sound loss was intermittent, but now seems permanent (of late). TrackIR has also gone astray - on and off - so it's quite possible that the problem is manifesting itself here too. Can anyone tell me if they've had similar/the same problems? If so, have you managed to resolve the problem, and, most importantly, how did you do it? If any OFF mods are reading - is there anything in CFS3 I can check out, and have you seen this problem before - and a fix? Cheers, Si

Hi Lima, I've deleted Firefox off the PC, and apparently that's sorted it - I can only assume that Firefox was harbouring or harnessing something unwholesome. I'm now using IE, and although I'm getting the occasional annoying window 'hijack' taking me to some crap money advice site, etc, sound's apparently back in OFF. On to my next problem......see the newest thread! Cheers, Si

"These guys aren't fighting for a religion or a cause. This is the lunatic fringe of the world playing a twisted game of one-upmanship." Clearly. My take is that this it the upfront challenge of right wing filth to the decent people of Europe. We've seen what Nazi scum like these can do before. We need to stop them NOW. The reaction of the Norwegian people has been magnificent - a wholehearted "f*** off" to immoral murderers like this. I applaud them, and you should too. For too long the extreme right wing in Europe has tried to frame the debate in terms of benefits, burhkas, populations, jobs and what not. When it comes down to it, it seems that their real argument is murder. Murder anyone who is muslim; murder anyone who isn't muslim who they imagine stand in their way. f***ing nice bunch of people. I expect that CA will mod this post out of existence, but for those that do get to see it, I'd like you all to simply ponder what such a deletion says about this site. If you're a CA mod - please leave this up. I've been modded before and it didn't feel right. Mod me again and I'll have to reconsider whether this is the sort of forum I care to read. Cheers, Si

Nope, Sound still AWOL. There's something else going on - any and all offers of help accepted. I'm desperate to fix this. Cheers, Si
-
Hi Lima, Cheers for that - something I'd completely forgotten. I mean: why would you actually want to disable all sound in a flight combat sim? Bonkers. I'll check it anyway - thanks again. Si

Not quite way off topic, and linking back to my post about observers - has any two seater flyer here even returned to base with a dead/dying observer in the back seat? Does it ever happen in player campaigns? -

The second battle of Fallujah is not particularly a fight that is worth commemorating I have to say. A nasty episode in a war that arguably should never have been fought. http://www.socialistaction.org/caputi1.htm Read that and tell me that the author of it has not seen that face of battle. Sorry to anybody that this offends, but it offends me when massacres are simply excused as battles. Fallujah was a cold blooded murder of innocent people to teach the Iraqis who was the boss. Go and have a look and a read round. There's more than a little evidence that innocent people were simply murdered because they stayed in the city. Google a few images if you like. Again, sorry if this offends anyone, but CA seems to kowtow to the US military in a manner that I find rather disturbing, so I feel that it's not unreasonable to show people another - probably less popular - view of the world. -

"I susect copyright may exist over that one. I had thought of 'OFF: Valour's Cross' whereon the DVD image would have an Iron Cross, Military Cross, Blue Max, Victoria Cross, Croix de Guerre and Distinguished Flying Cross (et al.) fanned out and fading into the background to left and right, with a simple wooden cross at fore and centre, stark and chilling in it's comparative simplicity." It'll be interesting to see how OBD go with this. Maybe it's in copyright, but it's debatable if Lewis' estate would see this as anything other than a memorial. I certainly agree that P4 must have a stark, chilling and eye-catching image. If they can make an image that matches Matt Milne's P3 music, then they've cracked. My hint - keep it simple: do not crowd the image. -

"I like "Sagittarius Rising" as it sounds good and its astrological meaning fits well." That has a very authentic feel to it: Over Flanders Fields - Sagittarius Rising. Probably mystify loads of people, but as far as I'm concerned, that is utterly superb, and if people don't get it, then the chances are that they aren't WWI flight simmers, in which case (shows arse). -

Lima, Good list. Some of it may be unachievable, but there's not harm in asking, and some of the points you raise (like wayward wingmen) are quite annoying. I hope that the devs reply positively to your post, as it's a reasonable (if work intensive!) list. Cheers Si -

Pol, Is there anything approaching a list of enhancements that you can circulate yet? Apart from my posts passim regarding improvements and additions, I've got a list including leader's streamers, home leave (leave in general) and rather more. Can you give us an outline of where OFF is being improved? Thanks, Si -

Well, they've certainly - along with cadaverous traders - f***ed up Greece good and proper, even if you disregard the tax evading propensities of wealthy Greeks. Moody's, Standard & Poor and the rest: up against the wall and it's Kalashnikov time - they've ruined more lives than can be counted. -

Given that the f***ing ratings agencies were still giving Lehman's an AAA+ rating shortly prior to its collapse, it's questionable as to why anyone would ay any attention to them at all. Personally, I would ban them from operating and prosecute them on the grounds that they distort markets through deception. -

All very nice. I'm impressed with much of the detail - the interior stitching in the Morane twin seater is a splendid and very subtle touch, but I hope it won't be lost on other players. I'm delighted that the BE2c of P3 will finally meet its fiery death come the advent of P4. You now have exactly what was originally needed - the BE12 and a generic BE2c/d/e/f/g which I think will get more flight time that you chaps suspect. If I had any hand in that - thank you for listening. The actual detail on most of the shots is quite stunning, but I'd love to see more people wandering around on the ground, if possible, and less 'clean' fits between ground objects and, er, the ground they're stuck into. I'm hoping/guessing that many of the objects were shown to prove they exist? Finally, and because it's so bloody picky that you'd have a right to track me down and kill me: aircraft personnel in flight. Is there a possibility that, unless enemy aircraft are within TAC range that the observer/gunner can be sat down? I know it's taking aesthetics to a daft degree, but if it could be done easily. I.e, if the enemy's within 4 miles, the observer's up and ready to go: if beyond that, he can take a seat/take photos/draw piccies of the area, etc. Would make landing easier in the new BE2! And, really, genuinely finally, for the same aesthetic reasons, but perhaps one to stir controversy - when aviators fall out or jump out of their machines, why not simply show them as human beings (albeit heavily clad) falling to Earth? I know this is potentially upsetting for people (perhaps inadvertently) watching, but we - the players - know that, in life, that's exactly what happened under a variety of conditions. I'm not asking for it because I'm being ghoulish - far from it. I'm asking for it because it is a visceral part of the authenticity that OFF captures better than any other flight sim. All the others duck the issue - I simply and humbly ask that you add back in a piece of horror that would have been readily recognised by the air crews of the time. A much appreciated update chaps. Cheers, Si -

"MvR never scored in the Halberstadt, by the way - his first aerial victory came with the first Albatros." Fantastic! If I ever fly another BE2 campaign and he turns up, I'm going after the f***er! -
"It's got FFB, and if you can't get used to having your throttle on your right," Given that the the mythical Microserf FFB2 feedback no longer exists (although I have one - mwuhahaha!) this sounds the business...

I've no wish to get terribly involved in this discussion, so I will simply post something that appeared in the Guardian t'other day. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/oct/07/jerusalem-sheik-raed-salah-islamic?INTCMP=SRCH I've not looked at the comments after the article so they may be filled with nutters, but generally the Grauniad (that's intentional, BTW) is pretty even handed on these issues. Judge for yourselves.

I'd suggest it's probably seasonal, with a touch of ennui. we all get it, sometimes worse than other times. Just don't think about it, and go off and do the things that appeal to you now. The appeal of flying will probably return, and if it doesn't, then surely it means that you've outgrown it.
