Kevin, my china, you just don't tell her. How do you think I got it? Click on the button, enter your visa card number, and Bob's your uncle. It's not as though you're going to be coming back from the shops with a CD case stuck up your jumper, is it? For the time being, SF2 is a bit of a luxury. But that is going to be where the effort is made in the future.

Actually, for the F-4s, the mapping is the same. The skins themselves are better, higher res, etc, but the old ones fit fine. The larger one is from SF2, the other SFG. They look a bit different, but they aren't. Some other aircraft may be different, though.

Guide to building Thirdwire Cockpits
ndicki replied to GwynO's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
There are a number of good tutorials written for CFS3 and GMAX - bearing in mind that making the parts is similar, and that GMAX and 3DS MAX are also similar, there'll be a lot you can learn, even if naming of parts and exporting procedures are different. Try here first - he's the man who did the visual models for the French aircraft in MAW. We have worked together a great deal, as I did the paining inside and out for most of them. http://www3.telus.net/murrdaka/tutorial/B2BNZ.htm -
In SF2, you have two F-4B types: F-4B: [LOD001] Filename=F-4B.lod Distance=100 [LOD002] Filename=F-4b_lod2.lod Distance=250 [LOD003] Filename=F-4b_lod3.lod Distance=500 [LOD004] Filename=F-4b_lod4.lod Distance=1000 [LOD005] Filename=F-4b_lod5.lod Distance=10000 And F-4B (1965) [LOD001] Filename=F-4B_65.lod Distance=100 [LOD002] Filename=F-4B_LOD2.lod Distance=250 [LOD003] Filename=F-4B_LOD3.lod Distance=500 [LOD004] Filename=F-4B_LOD4.lod Distance=1000 [LOD005] Filename=F-4B_LOD5.lod Distance=10000 These are copied directly out of the stock, unmodified, ini files. The capitalisation is as issued. Texture file names for the F-4B are named: F-4B_1.BMP F-4B_2.BMP F-4B_3.BMP F-4B_4.BMP F-4B_5.BMP So your .ini will need to reflect these LOD names, and your texture bitmaps need to correspond to the new convention. What is frustrating is that scanning the new type of LOD files with a hex editor does not reveal the file names...

Good luck, Wildfowler - weapons in this sim make CFS3 look easy! But it won't normally CTD or lock up if you're missing something, which is a relief. For info, The Wrench is the "How things work" ace, so pay attention! -
German propellor textures
ndicki posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I've noticed that all the German WW2 addon aircraft have yellow-tipped props, which is incorrect; they were generally painted RLM 70 schwarzgrun, without coloured tips. So does anybody know of correct replacement textures which will do the job? I've tried by myself, but so fat, all I've done is make a hash of it... -
German propellor textures
ndicki replied to ndicki's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
That's right. And some have really horrible alpha layers, too, with a rather granulous texture which looks too opaque and frankly, bloody awful! BTW, Russ says you've got some stuff to do with a variant of his Bf109E-4 (it is an E-4, not and E-3) - I'm trying to get conversions to an E-4 Trop, and E-7, and an E-7 Trop... No harm in asking! Edit: Wait a bit on the prop - I've just found one - from the DAT Bf109B. I'll have to test it on the others. It's for a two-blade prop, so it may not look right. -

There's an IAR 80 and 81 in IL-2. Basically the same aircraft, just a question of hardpoints and weapons. There's one for SF, too, which I want to look at one day. -

Adding a launch rail...
ndicki posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I have read the knowledge base... http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=24863... And if I've understood, I need a model of a sidewinder launch rail in order to fit one to this Hunter I'm messing round with (SF2). Here are the screenies as we are now; the missiles appear in the right place, and function correctly, but don't have a rail. If I've got it right, that's because the aircraft model itself doesn't have a rail there either. Right so far...? So I have to add one. Which is the problem. I have GMAX, but not 3DS MAX. And GMAX won't export LOD files. So... Does anybody have any advice on where to get a rail from? Thanks! PS Don't look at the aircraft itself too much. All very WIP!Incidentally, in the photo of the real one, spot the "mistake"... -
THIRD WIRE FEATURES

Mission Builder. A good, full-options one like they had with CFS2. That was brilliant to work with, and you could set things up with trigger events and so on. That really is what is missing here, even if I really enjoy the "no idea what'll happen" single mission generator. -

Hi Kevin - good idea about which game - but as it's a skin only, and I've given full instructions about decal installation for SFG/WOX and SF2, it should go for everything. For my full stand-alones, I do generally remember to say. 14? This is looking serious. Last time I looked, it was 20! One or two more coming soon... Then I'll move on to the Spitfires or something. -

Adding a gunsight in "Cockpit off" view
ndicki posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I'm mucking round with Monty's beautiful B-534, and I've got a question - when the cockpit is visible, there's the fixed ring sight, but if you go into "cockpit off" mode (OK, I know it's cheating, but tell me you never do that!) there is no sight available. Is anybody able to point me at the right place? I've tried changing the [GunsightFront] entry in B-534_COCKPIT.INI, but it hasn't worked... There doesn't seem to be anything in the Knowledge Base, and a search for "gunsight" didn't help much... Thanks! -

Of course! Thanks, Gerwin. Put it down to excessive exposure to CFS3, where it doesn't matter where you put image files as long as they're in the install somewhere.
