Rhodesia - 1980's
ndicki replied to Jeremiah Weed's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
Easy answer there - I don't have WOI. I do have SFG and SF2, and as SF2 is I expect the future standard (there are supposed to be obscure things about how FMs are modelled, etc, etc) then it seems the way to go for me at least. Spinners has brought out a first-rate flyable SF2 Hunter which I'm using (need to ask him, too, before releasing anything) and in any case, most of the aircraft we need, we'll have to ask permission from somebody somewhere. -

Looks good. The ranks are correct. I've got a callsigns list which does away with these annoying "Cowboy" and "Buick" signs. If you've downloaded my SAAF Sabre, you'll have them. -

Nothing really, at the outset. The "Z" suffix simply indicates it was built for SA. The only real differences were cosmetic, as far as I know at least. Bloody lekker, that idea! I think I'm going to enjoy this project! Meanwhile, this is about done. Serial numbers go from 450 to 466, randomised with the figure "2" for No. 2 Squadron. Replaced the Vampires, as agreed. -

Just for info, Erikgen has given me permission to use his Gina and make such mods as are needed! Many thanks, Enrico! -

Rog on the Cheetah - there were eleven of them, R8600 - R6180. Probably from Israel, but not confirmed. Just out of interest, some - at least three - Alouette IIIs were ex-Portuguese from Mos. And if that doesn't give a little bit more credibility to the idea of the Gina... Meanwhile, how's this do you? It still needs weathering and generally to be made to look like it's been around the block a bit, but the basics are in. Also got callsigns, ranks, the lot. -

About ten different aircrasft in that thread, but no, there isn't a Lynx. There's a Kfir, which is easily confused with SAAF's Denel Cheetah (for a very good reason), but no Lynx. You'd be more familiar with the Lynx under its civilian name: Reims Cessna FTB337G... It has two .303 Brownings above the wing and four light hardpoints for rocket pods etc under the wings. Useful light COIN/FAC aircraft. Mate of mine used to drive them. And we've forgotten the Genet/Warrior - SIAI Marchetti SF260... Not going to get one of those, either. When I did this is CFS2, life was easier! Edit : Bugger me, you were right all along! Veltro2K's post shows one - well spotted! -
Damage models, vehicles

I've just done a couple of Cents with a single pass each, using a Gina with the .50s alone. Given that the Centurion was regareded in its day as one of the strongest, most effectively armoured tanks around - ask any Israeli or SATC Trooper - then it does strike me that something needs looking at. And the other AFVs don't seem to be any better. 50 cal MGs shouldn't even begin to annoy a tank. So... Anybody got any decent ideas of how it's done? I have no idea at all of how damage is calculated in SF - bear with me, I've only just arrived! -

Unclear - Nigel) percussion bomb with a metre long probe in the nose to detonate the bomb above the ground. A Rhodesian invention with the appearance of a gas cylinder one and a half meters high and weighing 460 kilos; this percussion bomb contained amatol which was detonated by a tube one metre long at the nose of the cylinder which struck the ground first. On detonation the casing burst into over, 80,000 fragments lethal at 60 meters with an accompanying stun effect for a further 60. A Hunter could carry 2 golf bombs. There was also a mini golf bomb of 80 kilos for light aircraft such as lynx). The Alpha Mk II bouncing bomb - a football size round bomb, 300 of which would be carried by a Canberra and when dropped would devastate an area of one hundred metres wide and a 1 000 metres long. The Alpha bomb had a double casing with 250 hard rubber balls between the inner and outer casings. This produced a forward bounce of some 18 metres at a maximum height of four metres before an ingenious three-way detonator exploded the bomb at three metres above the ground. Forty-five per cent of the casing - against seven and a half per cent of the conventional anti- personnel bomb - would saturate the target. Frantan was a streamlined 50 Imp. Gallon plastic drum of napalm fitted with fins, which was designed to shatter on impact and project the napalm forward. Originally intended for use by Vampires, extended to Hunters, etc. Lynx - Matra 68mm rockets, 37mm SNEB rockets, 80Kg mini-golf bomb Provost - Matra 68mm rockets, 37mm SNEB rockets, 80Kg mini-golf bomb Hunter - Matra 68mm rockets, 37mm SNEB rockets, 130lb Concrete Cockle Shell bomb (practice), 1,000lb GP, 450Kg Golf Bomb, 250lb GP, Frantan (napalm-type bombs) Canberra - Alpha bombs, 1,000lb GP, 450Kg Golf Bomb, 250lb GP, Frantan Best I can do for the time being. It'll be virtually impossible to go much further without the help of a modeller to do the golf bombs and frantan. -

Grief, now that will be fun. Half of it was home-made at the best of times - golf bombs and so on. I'll have to research this, so stay away from the subject for a bit! I have a book called "Pride of Eagles" by Beryl Salt. About 1000 pages in Letter format - it's the complete operational history of the SRAF/RRAF/RhAF from day one until Independence. A lot to work through, but it's a pretty decent place to start! -

I'd avoid American-built aircraft. They simply don't correspond, with the exception of the F-5, to African conditions or needs. SAAF dropped the Sabre from front-line use in the mid-1970s AFAIK, so it's true that they might have become available for export, except that they were kept on as advanced trainers, and not sold on - so I think if we stick with pretty much the stuff that was already there, namely for the RhAF, Hunters, Canberras and Daks, and for the SAAF, Mirage IIICZs and F1s (AZ and CZ), and Canberras, Daks and Impalas, we're there. The only one I'd think of bringing in is the G-94-R4 from ex-Portuguese stocks. I'm already on the skin, and need to modify the loadouts to take the right kind of weapons for the scenario. Not easy, since I'm in SF2, and can't add new weps yet... Obviously, the people opposite have the usual selection of Sino-Soviet junk! Meanwhile, is anyone looking at vehicles? There is a major problem there. Yesterday I took out a number of Centurions using the .50 cal Brownings on the Gina. Clearly not right. -
Strike Fighters 2 patch is out

That thing about all decals being in the decals folder is a pain if you're importing WOX/SFP1 aircraft... You need to change the decal names to stop them all overwriting each other, and then edit the ini accordingly. Grrrr... -
No idea - I wondered what had happened to it. The K4s weren't going to leave it up at Cranbourne, anyway. Here you go: http://www.therli.com/Troper_report.asp

SF2 installation possibilities
ndicki posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
At the moment, my install of SF2 is in the standard place, base files in C Program Files, and mods in My Documents - also on the C drive. The problem is that I configured my C drive really for the OS only, and it's getting a bit tight in there. Most of my other flight sim stuff is on D or E, the way I'd set out to do it. Is there a way to move the modded files (about 10GB!) from My Docs to somewhere else? Obviously, in order to put the base files somewhere else, it's a simple question of uninstalling and reinstalling. Also, with SFG, I had a number of separate "theatre-specific" installs; Israel, Europe, etc, so as to avoid inappropriate aircraft appearing in Quick Combat, for example. Is there a way to get a second install of SF2 to look for a different mods folder? Otherwise, there's not much point in thinking of separate installs... -
SF2 installation possibilities
ndicki replied to ndicki's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
OK, this is it, the definitive, at least for XP Home. The folder "C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2" must stay in place. If you move it, it will be regenerated. None of the subfolders are necessary and can be deleted at will. the options.ini file however MUST be in this folder or the Sim will assume it is running for the first time and regenerate ALL the base files which you would expect here in a new install. Meanwhile, your base install and mods folder can be anywhere you like. Mine now have this structure: Core files: E:\Program Files\ThirdWire\Strike Fighters 2 Mod files: E:\Program Files\ThirdWire\Mods\StrikeFighters2 The only thing you need to do is open the options.ini file which is in "E:\Program Files\ThirdWire\Mods\StrikeFighters2" (ie, your modded folders folder) and change the final line to reflect the whereabouts of the modded folder. You then copy this into the folder in My Documents, allowing it to overwrite the one there. Also change the line in Unlimited Options.ini, but you can leave it where it is. No need to copy it into My Documents. Fire it up and check it works. It will run without access to the mods folder, so if you find that you can't find your addons in the UI screen, then you've typed the path in wrongly. You'll also find that the base aircraft, etc, files have regenerated into "C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2" Check the paths in both options.ini and Unlimited Options.ini in your mods folder, and copy the correctly-pathed options.ini back into "C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2" Should work. Note that now you can do multiple installs but have to change the path each time in options.ini before starting to load the sim. There will probably be a way round this, but it'll take someone a bit cleverer who knows how to make a simple name-changing batch file. -
Killmarks for red side planes
ndicki replied to Leidgenosse's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Er..... Yes.... I give up? But the Sovs have always used stars as kill marks. The Germans though used often to paint tiny roundels/stars along with the type, date and place on the "bars" they painted on the tailfin or rudder. You can just about make them out in the photo here. Most model kit decal manufacturers don't bother, because they'd be pretty well invisible, at least in small scales. -
I confirm - the RAF Museum is on the Underground at Colindale (Northern Line). Dead easy to get to. http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/london/planavisit/index.cfm Failing that, the Imperial War Museum or the National Army Museum are worth a visit - first rate stuff which the Poms do very well. I'd write off Mme Tussaud's if I were you - the queue can go for hours. You'd probably get fed up of waiting - we did. We didn't bother with it in the end. If the weather's OK, I'd just stroll around one of the parks for a while, too, just to get the flavour of it. Or spend a while looking at photos from the War - VE-Day and so on - and visit some of the places. Also quite fun if that sort of thing keeps you out of trouble! Or you could always go and stand outside Zimbabwe House (429 The Strand) and pelt any ZANU bas-tard you see with rotten eggs or tomatoes. Try tinned tomatoes, they're more effective, pollute less and can be recycled several times and eaten after use.

Nice looking aircraft there! I have SAAF Springbok castles and Springbok roundels and Harvard-type trainer decals available, if anyone's interested. I actually did a 2 Sqn SAAF skin for the Sabre - it's here among the Sabre skins, but it's for Korea. I meant to get around to doing an SA-based one, but never got around to it. Actually, RhAF Sabres might be a bit of a backward step. In most respects, they were not as good as the Hunter (just to start with) and I would imagine that spares, after X years in SAAF service, would have been a problem, despite the RhAF's reputation for excellence in innovation and maintenance - often 100% availability. Something which peeved the RAF... The Hunter was perfectly good at it's job, and easily available. Ex-Jordan, Belgium, or any number of users who might sell them on if offered the usual dodgy end-user certificate. So I'd keep them. Anyway, Rhodesia was fast approaching bankruptcy, so replacing ALL the aircraft is too much. Just the Ginas to replace Vampires, and that shoulkd be OK... My view, anyway. I want to test the skinning techniques I use in CFS3 for SF, so bear with me - that Hunter has a LONG way to go. Don't even mention the Spit! In both cases, I'd need permission from the makers, anyway. If I get inspired, I'll fiddle round with the Gina, too. -

Gr. Viper, you're a hero! Dead right! I'd looked in the main folder, not in the mods folder. We're in business... And that means multiple installs, too... Just change the folder name... -
SF2 installation possibilities

We had the same trouble in CFS3. The equivalent of the options and controls files go into a folder in Application Data and are hidden files. And if you come out on an aircraft which has a problem with its sound alias or weapons, say, the sim won't reload without your going into the options folders and deleting the last aircraft used file. Every single newbie's got caught in uninstalling and reinstalling tens of times until he learns the trick. It's a pain in the arse, even if once you know how it works, it only takes seconds. SF does better from that point of view. And there's the multiple install problem, too. A genius called Martin Wright (he really does some brilliant ©FS imaging programs which many of you will already know) came up with a little tool which creates a second set of folders in the application data folder, and changes the names. Brilliant. So you can have as many installs as you like. I have six or seven... We need that sort of thing here too, but where the CFS folder is just a tiny options folder, in SF3 you're looking at several GB. That's too much. Good idea to begin with, but not practical. Now imagine three installs at 10GB each, just sitting in your My Documents folder... My C drive is only 30GB anyway - it's a partitioned-off bit of a bigger drive. I did look... But I'll look again. I hope you're right! -

ndicki replied to Jeremiah Weed's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
That's right. That's the Lynx. They had a couple of rocket pods under the wings, and twin Browning .303s in a pod mounted above the wing, on either side of the cabin. Meanwhile - this is one I did with the SF2 Hunter FGA9 as modded by Spinners, using a template I downloaded here. If I'm going to release it, I'll go from scratch, as I prefer to use my own templates. It still needs the ejection seat markings and the serial numbers, but that's all. Very few operational aircraft carried any markings other than the s/n.
