  1. OT: Any of you folks play GPL?

Welcome Badger, Yes love GPL and still play it (although heavily modded). It runs great and looks better on my Vista 64 system then it ever did before. Papyrus did an excellent job with all the race sims they produced.... they are sorely missed. Some people don't care for GPL because it's an old sim and does not have all the eye candy todays race sims have, even though it looks fairly good despite it's age (modded). It's not an easy sim to master and the learning curve is steep. Some don't care for the games time set but the major appeal for me always has been it's what I remember when growing up. It's what open wheel racing was like before it got castrated, which was necessary, way to many driver deaths...something like 15 just in the 1967 season alone.
  2. Got 16 out of 20, can't believe I mistook the DIII for a DV God knows I've had enough of them filling my kite with holes over the last 2 months
  3. Is it just me.....

Will be looking for that review CJ, thanks in advance
  4. Is it just me.....

Ahhhh I see, there were several video's from that poster so I might have jumbled some of them up in my mind, so I will take your word for the FM/AI based on the excellent work you have done with FE. I am also glad to see you do agree somewhat with me about the aircraft impacting the ground from height. While the crash renderings I have seen would look very good for a low altitude slow speed crash the same I cannot agree with on a 3000 ft death plunge or a low altitude high speed crash. Some of these planes came in hot, clipped the ground and did a half cartwheel and came to a rest. I really expected to see lots more tumble and roll over some distance, even with the aircrafts appendages slowing it down somewhat.
  5. Is it just me.....

The vids were just posted a few days ago by some at SimHq, these supposedly are recent game videos and I don't recall exactly what the poster said he was using for the AI, but I do recall someone did ask and he said it wasn't novice AI. I also think he said that he had most of his FM set to realistic. It is possible he is not being totally honest. But if your saying that the AI is much better then what is being talked about (in referance to these videos) then please would you be able to post some videos to show this? It would be doing a great service to RoF and potential buyers if you could please find time to show what some of us are not seeing in these videos. A lot of people here respect you (myself included) and any videos coming from you would put this issue to rest. FE's AI is very good I agree, but anyone use to TK's previous sim knew the AI would be good before buying FE, OFF BHaH went to great lengths in their pre release videos to show how good the AI is, RoF on the other hand has not had a video posted yet that says "here's how good the AI is guys". If a video (or video's) has been posted somewhere I must have missed it and a link to that video would be greatly appreciated. I also have another question since you mentioned the crash landings. Can you tell me please what happens to the shot down AC when the impact the ground after falling (uncontrolled) from a few thousand feet? These were also shown in the videos in question and it was the most unrealistic thing I have ever seen. So is there a different setting or something or do all the planes actually just crinkle up like a halfway crush beer cans on impact?
  6. Odd graphics glitch...

Works great for me on Vista 64 PHE, but I have 8GB of memory and Quad Core CPU also.
  7. This is just plain cool!

I started a thread at this site about something I saw in those videos also (before WF2 video post). I did not start that thread here in the OFF section because well.... it's not directly dealing with OFF in any way. I think no one has replied to that thread and it only has a few views, it's not a sub forum a lot of people visit. I definately could have got more feed back starting that thread here, but being it was an observation only about the RoF videos and not a comparison between RoF and BHaH I felt it belonged in a different sub forum. But now I will make that comparison. For those who have viewed the new videos of RoF who do you think got it right (or mostly right) concerning the way a shot down aircraft impacts the ground, RoF or BHaH?
  8. Was OFF discounted again?

I got my copy for the $39.99 price, I don't buy any software when it's first released. But that isn't because I'm waiting for a price drop. I wait a few months to see what the feedback on the game is like, waiting for a price drop is secondary. If it just so happens before I place the order thats fine, if not thats fine also, it doesn't matter once I have decided to buy. After I got a good assessment of BHaH I decided it's time to get it, the feedback on BHaH and OBD convinced me it was a simulator well worth the asking price, and the devs were supporting their product 110%. It was just coincidence that when I was saving to place the order the price dropped to $39.99, so I was able to get BHaH a few weeks earlier then expected. Now after playing BHaH for a couple months now I will not hesitate to buy the next Phase when released by OBD, they have won my trust by their hard work, dedication and continued product support of BHaH, so no need to wait for feedback next time. So am I miffed that I paid $39.99 and now the price is $29.99? No I'm not as that is the nature of the business. All software eventually comes down in price, some faster then others, but they all do sooner or later. One thing to consider also is the customers who purchased BHaH first will have something us later buyers will never have. Thats the excitement of seeing all the wonderful gems BHaH has in it first and getting to share it with other first buyers in the community. Later buyers (like myself) see something and comment on it all flush with awe and you older hands do humor us (thank you all for this), even though you have probably witness the same event 100x already.
  9. Which would you choose?

My vote went for TrackIR, picked up a Pro 3 on the cheap a little while back and I now understand what I was missing all this time. As for a joystick I am still using my trusty ol' Saitek X45, it's pushing 10 yrs old now, been through 2 house moves and tons of sim hours, built like a tank IMHO. The rudder axis is built into the throttle and works great for me, so pedals would be a nice but not a must have for me. No FFB on the X45, but I compensate with visual and audio cues and the TrackIR has increased my awareness in this field by 100x.
  10. ROF pushed back AGAIN

    Thats true
  11. Your first combat flight sim...

You talking about BoB2 when it was first released or now Jedi? I have BoB2 and have stayed current with the updates it's almost a totally different sim now then from when it's first release. Just seen a guy goes by the handle of Aces 2 who almost ready to release a huge multiskin pack for the luftwaffe bombers, looks very impressive and historically detailed. I seen the 2.10 update is coming and is suppose to improve the terrain quite a bit. Dang-it went OT again sorry guys.
  12. Your first combat flight sim...

Yes I had that bug too, mine was Shogun Total War, but alas unplayable now due to my OS. Recently did an interview with Vladimir Zayarniy from Graviteam (SFK42) for another forum. They have a RTS coming out called FRONT ROADS: Kharkov 1943, looks to be pretty good, might even get me to try RTS again, sorry for going way OT with that one guys.
  13. Your first combat flight sim...

I reaquired the game a several years back Jedi (complete w/manual, 5 or 6 3.5 floppies etc) but couldn't get it to run on my xp system so I just put it away, a few years later I found out about DOSbox then realized I can't remember where or what I did with the game . Thats one game I wish someone would redo with all of todays advancements in PC hardware... it would so rock!
  14. ROF pushed back AGAIN

And still no word on when the promised demo will be availabe either, I don't think were going to see a demo unless sales are bad. I think it was just a ploy to calm down the very heated debate that was going on at another forum a month or two back.
  15. Have to smile .....

SirMike, there's nothing wrong about getting RoF, like I said in my earlier post I have yet to find anyone at this forum saying Will I buy RoF? no way, never and not even if they do change the online connection requirement for SP. Any true WWI flight sim fanatic would love to have RoF now or down the road and not because it's the Holy Grail of WWI flight sims, it's far from it. People here want it because it's a WWI flight sim, and true WWI flight sim junkies just can't get enough. Take myself for example, I have FE/Gold and BHaH, I still play FE even though I have BHaH. There are things I feel FE does better then BHaH and somethings I think BHaH does better then FE but I love them both and fly them both for different reasons. My point I guess is that I have seen certain people at another forum saying you can't be a serious enthuist of WWI flight sims without getting RoF, forget the other two sims out there, there not worth the HD space, it's RoF or nothing. Thats the mentality that jerks my chain, I'm leary of people who say you can't be a serious enthuist unless you have only one certain title from one certain company or try to use the arguement that you should support this title because if you don't the genre will die but in turn they don't support any other titles in the genre. Instead they try to snipe at the other games and do use terms like Will I buy BHah or FE? no way, never, how disingenuous they are.
  16. Have to smile .....

No problem rabu, I call it like I see it
  17. Have to smile .....

No Rabu you were not being critical or paranoid concerning RoF. I have been at the RoF forums at SimHq for sometime (mostly lurking, sometimes posting) and seen you got roughed-up quite a few time over there, even when your were complimenting RoF. The major incident that comes to my mind was someone posted some screenies of CW and everyone was making overly nice comments about it (to me they looked okay, but not that spectacular at that stage of development), you then posted some BHaH screenies and they were on you like a pack of wolfs, what a double standard. I also feel FlyX tried a fast one with the "small feet" & "big head" screen shots, you called him on it and nailed him (good for you ). I especially like the guy who tried to make the point that the pilots in RoF look small because people from the early 1900's were smaller in stature compared to people in this day and age, he's probably about 1000 years off on that one , but for arguments sake lets say he's right. Would aircraft designers of that time knowingly design cockpits for pilots that are 6' and over when the average height for people from that time (according to him) was 5'6"? Instead of just saying "yeah the pilots are undersized" they latch on to a weak counterpoint and try to make it scientific fact so it's okay and correct. Your comparison pictures of the OFF DVII pilot in plane and RoF DVII pilot in plane pretty much said it all, the pilots in RoF are undersized. FlyXs counterpoint photos back you up in my view, because no matter where the pilot was sitting (high or low) in the cockpit their heads are still bigger then what RoF renders. The thing that puzzles me is that people here at this forum say they will buy RoF as it stands now (some already have), or later after seeing reviews, or if the online connection part is dropped for SP. I have yet seen anyone here say they wouldn't buy RoF under any condition (including myself). Thats not the same view at the RoF forum concerning BHaH at all, it's more like don't waste your money PERIOD. If these people were true WWI flight sim fans BHaH would be in their stable reguardless if it was so-so or excellent. Honestly I think some of these guys do have BHaH but won't admit it anyway. If I do end up getting RoF (most likely) I will have three WWI simulators, all they will have is one, so yeah their big WWI sim fans
  18. YEAH PENS BABE!

    Who would have thunk it!
  19. Your first combat flight sim...

Agreed Jedi as I don't remember playing Hero's of the 357th much or F-15. Now all the rest on the other hand saw lots of playtime. I still remember the day I got these, paid $20.00 for the whole lot. But if I could only pick one it would probably be Tornado with RB and B-17 in a tie for second place.
  20. Your first combat flight sim...

Well I can't pick one since I got several at one time from a store going OOB (what a score that day ) but I do believe it was in the 1990-1992 time frame, so here they are.
  21. Have to smile .....

I have been following closely RoF at most of the forums (including Neoqbs first blog) since RoF's resurgence back into the limelight (about a several months before BHaH release). Neoqb has been a little dodgy about the SP aspect of RoF until fairly recently. They tipped their hand about SP in that link CJ posted and thats when the reveal was made that RoF SP will be to eventually assimulate you into RoF MP, look at it as sort of a farm club like the MLB or the NHL uses. I'm sure RoF SP will have some very good user made mission eventually and some very good user made campaigns eventually, but it's going to be like chinese food, very good but your hungry 2 hours later, and if you want the filling steak and potatos meal your going to have to go into RoF MP to get it, nothing wrong with that if thats your cuppa. I understand the MP requirements of RoF and have no problems with whatever Neoqb wants to do there, and if auto updates is the requirement to keep a level playing field in MP then so be it, that is just plain common sense and really should be no arguements there from anyone. And if you understand Neoqbs stance on SP it makes sense for their marketing strategy, they don't want players to be flying this game in SP strictly, they eventually want you spending most if not all your time in a MP squadron, they said so themselfs so it's straight from the horses mouth. So if your a player who spends all of your simming time in MP or a simmer who spends more then 1/2 your time in MP your going to be very, very happy with RoF no doubt. Players who spend all their simming time in SP, well these guys are basically going to be playing FE on massive steroids but without the free downloadable plane's and engrossing campaign that BHaH has. Different strokes for different folks....btw I will be eagerly awaiting OFF 4 and enjoying OFF: BHaH in the meanwhile
  22. Help with target padlock toggle

Roopod I understand where your coming from, been playing sims for years but never invested in TackIR, as a single parent raising two kids I have to watch the budget also. I just didn't see TrackIR as something as a gotta have (like a good HOTAS joystick or a good GPU/memory/CPU) for playing flight simulators. Padlock view seemed to suit me just fine, so why shell out more hard earned cash for a frill. About two weeks ago I ran across someone selling an like new TrackIr 3 Pro, the price was right $45.00 shipped, so I said why not. I can honestly say not getting TrackIR for so long had to be one of the dumbest choices I have ever made. IMHO now it is a must have if you really want to get the most out of your games just like a good HOTAS joysick and GPU/memory/CPU. I'm saving my pennies right now and hope to have a TrackIR 5 in 2-3 months and when I do get that TRackIR 5 your more then welcome to my TrackIR 3 Pro if you haven't made the leap by then.
  23. So much for comrades of the air

Hi Jim, sorry I confused you with a different poster my apologies. Always good to meet a fellow vet (E-4 Electronics Warfare System Specialist 23rd TFW 1981-1983). I'm not sure about the RFC but I do think the French and Americans had NCO pilots in WWI.
  24. Help with target padlock toggle

Heres a little trick I use sometimes if I'm having trouble visually aquiring a target and I have wingmen with me, I hit the "A" key and follow them :blush2:
