So much for comrades of the air
godzilla1985 replied to JimAttrill's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Heres a couple things I did that helped me. Like you andqui when I first started flying BHaH I would routinely find myself alone fighting while my wingies flew blissfully off in the other direction oblivious to my plight. In the workshops I change "lead by rank" to "always lead". If your flight element has a pilot with a higher rank then you, even if your flight leader your wingies tend to follow him if you have lead by rank checked. Also when you decide to attack before you get too far away from your flight take a look to see where your wingmen are, if you have "always lead" they should be right with you if they are not hit the "R" (rejoin) key. If it doesn't work scrap the attack, better to live and fight another day then go down trying to shoot down multiple enemy aircraft yourself. Or you can do like one of the other guys here suggest to me when I made a similar post months ago.....buy your wingmen more rounds at the officers club so they watch your six better Another thing I do that has helped me a lot is knowing your enemys equipment. One advantage us virtural BHaH pilots have over the real pilots of the era (besides not dying for real) is we can fly the aircraft were likely to face off against in combat. You mentioned your flying the Dh2 so your main scout adversarys are likely to be the Eindecker, Halberstadt and the early Albatros's. Take these planes up in QC and test them out, it's the best way to know what their strenghts and weakness are against your Dh2. It's time consuming but well worth it. Even placing yourself in one of these aircraft and flying against Dh2's in QC will give you great insight as to what works and what won't. -
Yes I remember that post Cameljockey, thats right after the crap hit the proverbial fan about the required on/off/on internet connection even for SP. I have tried many times to explain this to people who ask and they just don't seem to understand...no connection...no play even in SP. Neoqbs servers are down.. no play, your IP is down...no play, neoqb goes belly up...DEFINATELY no play and maybe for a long time too boot and just maybe the possibility you will never get to play RoF again. Some of these guys try to spin this into a positive and I just don't see how anyone with half a brain can see this as a good thing. Some honesty believe that neoqb will release a patch to make RoF playable in the event of their demise even though neoqb has NEVER said this would happen, heck some of these guys are banking on a hacker to come along and help them out if neoqb falls on it's butt. Talk about living in a dream world I think the funnest one I read was a guy saying that even if he had over a hundred dollars invested in RoF and it's add-ons and neoqb crashed and burned in one year, and he could never play RoF again, he would be content and not upset in the least because he got his money's worth...If neoqb does go the way of the dodo I want to be there to read what this guy is saying then

Persistant smoke from downed aircraft
godzilla1985 replied to Laton's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Thanks Laton, can't wait to try it -
Flew a mission yesterday as a french pilot (in campaign mode) in early 1917 (nupe 17). The mission was to attack German infantry massing for an attack. The weather was miserable, a sleet/snow mix from take off till the mission ended, a real crapper of a day. I was really suprised we were even flying, but HQ must have had considerable importance attached to this target to send us up in our kites this day. We arrived over the target and I was extra careful not to fire long burst and to avoided any high g manuvering while firing. After my second pass my MG jammed rock solid. I flew around the target for awhile waiting for my MG to hopefully unjam, so meanwhile I ordered my wingmen to attack the target. I noticed after a couple passes they stopped attacking the target too. No matter how much I ordered them back in they were not attacking although there were still plenty of targets left and I knew they were not out of ammo. I got tired of waiting for my guns to hopefully unjam and remembered what andqui said in this thread and sure enough it worked. I went back in and got one more pass and my MG jammed again. I sent the wingmen back in and they made a couple passes and stopped attacking like before. My Nupe had taken a couple hits from ground fire so I decided that was enough for the day and I regrouped my wingmen and we went home. I'm glad I didn't risk anymore attacks because shortly after my wheels touched down on our airfield my right side gear collapsed and my Nupe ended up on it's side, my pilot wasn't hurt but the Nupe was a write off. Now I tried to figure out why my MG jammed during this mission. No long burst, no high G manuvers while firing, discounted bad ammo since my wingmen seemed to be experiancing the same problem I was having (whats the chances of 4 AC having bad ammo?). The only thing left that seemed logical was the snow/sleet weather we were flying in. I honestly think my wingmen and I were experiancing some kind of freezing up and icing of our weapons. If this was the case MAN does this sim model everything, the dev's didn't leave anything out, totally immersive

I kind of like the gun jams in the game. Honestly guys how many of you have been in a crazy furball and finally get that one pilot you know is the honcho of the group in your crosshairs pull the trigger and hear "Click Click" instead of lead flying and feel your heart drop to your stomach  Well worth the price of admission.

Hellshade I understand were your coming from but RoF isn't being marketed as an MP only game like the two games you mentioned, and honestly I wish they would have just planned the released RoF as MP only, it would have saved a lot of arguing. Now a lot of guys are talking doing like you will do, RoF for MP and BHaH for SP and that seems IMHO to be the best fit for everyone who wants to fly serious WWI MP but wants a serious WWI SP game aspect too. My ax to grind isn't with guys like you, it's the zealous RoF fans who try to dismiss out of hand BHaH's huge advantage over RoF in SP mode, come on guys give credit where credit is due, but they honestly try to convince people RoF will be much better then BHaH in all SP aspects right out of the gate when they know it's not true. Then they proceed to go on trying to convince people that BHaH is just a mediocre flight sim mod based on an obsolete crappy game engine. It has me thinking how can they just dismiss BHaH out of hand like that? Have they tried BHaH to arrive at that fact? I doubt it or they wouldn't be making these statements and would probably share you setiments instead Hellshade. Personally I doubt RoF SP will ever approach the level BHaH has achieved with it's SP campaign and immersion, and the AI in BHaH will be very tough for RoF to best it in SP or MP, equal maybe, but probably not best it. But was that ever RoF's intentions and thats the crux of it, why won't the RoF dev's just say RoF is geared for MP with the SP aspect being more for training and recruitment into MP squadrons, don't expect the SP experiance like BHaH cause it won't be in there, it was never our intentions to have that level of SP in there. If I was running a virtual squad on RoF or thinking of setting one up, where do you think I would go to try and staff my flight from? Yes I would be looking at that stat page neoqb will have of everyone who plays this game just like my son was recruited into a clan for COD4 for the xbox 360. There are a very few flight sims that give you that "you are there" feeling in SP, RB/RB3D, BHaH, BoB II and B-17 TM8th are just some members of that club that I don't think RoF will ever gain membership to or honestly even wanted to try too. But thats okay really it is..... but please neoqb just stop trying to sell me or anyone an MP game in MP/SP clothing.

Didn't the NA release get pushed back? Thought I read somewhere its mid month now.

All good points but I still think a showdown is on the horizon between BHaH and RoF which will either draw the people still on the fence to BHaH or RoF and even some guys who might find out RoF isn't all that it was promised to be. The only guys solidly in the RoF camp and BHaH will never attract are the MP only guys, for them it's RoF or nothing. Right now it's hard to provide any convincing arguement to get people to try BHaH, but that will probably change as soon as RoF is released or shortly afterward. BHaH is a known comodity now, RoF is still just mostly user game videos and comments from guys who are too biased to be completely objective. I too was caught up and seduced by the eye candy and the FM/DM's of RoF and that was the reason I was going with RoF over BHaH as my first new WWI sim purchase (if I bought BHaH at all). I had FE so I figured why buy BHaH right now. Even with all those beautiful videos provided by the BHaH team I still wasn't convinced BHaH was that much better then FE modded up, plus the CFS3 game engine caused me some major concern also. I had P2 and it worked less than stellar for me. What was the major turning point for my decision to purchase BHaH was when the price dropped to $39.99, now after having the game for several months I don't know what I was thinking for not getting BHaH sooner. Soon RoF will be released and any problems it might have will be exposed and comparisons between all three games can have legitimacy in being discussed openly. RoF is about to leave the shelter of the harbor and face the open sea much as BHaH has done several months before. BHaH has weathered the storms and is still here and seems to be doing well now will RoF fair the same? If there is a big jump in inquires about BHaH at the end of the month or the next, that will be a pretty good rule of thumb of what might be going on.

I agree as it too hard to get an honest answer answer from the guys that have been in the "loop" with neoqb for awhile. I noticed some who patrolled that forum (and several others) for the last several months putting out fires have gone fairly quiet since they got thier copies. Yes Rabu they do pile on over at the other site if you ask a serious question concerning certain game requirements or dare to compare something you seen in an RoF video to BHaH, but then comparing it to any other WWI sim like RB3D or FC or Canvas Jacket (which isn't out either) is okay it seems. There is some odd things going on over there. It may all be innocent or unintentional but on the surface it looks questionable to say the least. While I agree that more WWI sims the better it should be for all WWI aviation sim enthusiast, heck I owned RB3D and FCG and flew them both regularly. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working out that way for BHaH and RoF and an eventual showdown is coming between these two. My monies on BHaH as the sim that gives you the most bang for the buck. RoF does hold a few advantages over BHaH, but only because of it's newer game engine, I don't think it's going to be enough once all the oooohhhh and ahhhhhs are over with and it boils down to which game is the real deal and offers the TOTAL WWI simming experiance. And this is coming from a guy who wasn't going to buy BHaH until after I got RoF....... me Your right B Brandy FE is an excellent sim, and it's also another sim you don't dare mention at another site in the RoF forum in making comparisons

Hi Olham, I only know of a few, the replica DVa at Old Rhinebeck and two OEF versions but don't know if they are completed yet. The Albatros is a tough bird to replicate because of the fuselage, it would probably be pretty expensive unlike most WWI aircraft replicas which are mostly tube framing. Now if your interested in looking at a few WWI replica kits check out these links http://www.airdromeairplanes.com/index.html (lots of Fokkers and Nupes) full sized or 3/4 sized...I like the DVIII myself..... maybe one day http://www.nieuports.com mostly Nupes but a few others http://www.loehle.com some WWI the Se5a looks good the SPAD XIII so-so... but the Fokker DVII There are lots more but when I switched computers I lost most of my links, I'll have to hut them down again. -

Obsolete flying coffins, godzilla? It was an FE2 that almost killed von Richtofen in July of 1917. And they didn't get more obsolete than that, at that time. Personally, I'd rather take on three single-seaters in OFF than one two-seater (except of course the BE2c, which must stand for "Bloody Easy 2 chase", since I've yet to have one even take evasive maneuvers, let alone fire back). While a fighter is more maneuverable than a two-seater it can only shoot at you when you're directly in front of it. You're exposed to greater danger from most two-seaters in all but a few positions. And there were several 'ace' two-seater crews, including at least one that won the Pour le Merite (when I find my book on it, I'll edit in the names). As for type and 'quality' of the opponent, these weren't sportsmen playing a game. They were soldiers fighting a war. And observation planes were the most valuable asset in the sky in WWI (the bomber became more important in WWII), while scouts/fighters were the most expendable. From a war effort standpoint, one RE8 was worth a dozen or more scouts. Isn't it possible that MvR almost got killed by that FE2 gunner because he got maybe......careless? I never ever said 2 seaters were totally harmless butterflies (see my "walk in the park" line) but historically most early to mid WWI observation aircraft with the exception of a few were slow, underpowered and could only fight effectively in the horizontal plane. Most (again not all) of these planes were not built with aerobatics in mind and too much maneuvering pretty much made the gunner/observer ineffective. Also the "Flying Coffin" wasn't my words but one from an anonymous RFC observer pilot, so if you didn't like that you will have to take that up with him. Now if you were a green scout pilot, or a pilot unfamiliar with how to attack a 2 seater or even a crack pilot who get's careless or complacent about attacking one because you shot down dozens of them.. then yes your in for a very bad day maybe a even a fatal one. Also my post were dealing with the real world not the OFF world, I really should have put that in my earlier post as I knew someone might bring up about the 2 seaters in OFF. The devs of OFF have spoke about the 2 seaters in the game in regards to the defensive capabilities and I'm going to leave it at that. Now heres the catch 22 I see with your last statement about one RE8 being worth a dozen or more scouts. Now if I'm flying for the other side and I manage to make your scouts ineffective because most have been shot down, and you can't provide adequate escort (or maybe none) for that RE8. Whats the real chances that RE8 would make it to the target area you want it too go? Probably would be highly unlikely as it has no protection from my scouts. A few might slip by sure, but probably not enough will get by my scouts to do you much good in a strategic sense. Air superiority, denying the enemy from flying in an airspace..... thats won by scouts not two seaters. All through military aviation it has been proven over and over again that if you can't control the airspace you want your planes to fly in your going to pay a high price. If I want to have my observation planes flying anywhere I want them to go negating your ability to stop them is paramount. Now I don't mind a sprited debate but something you said in your last post isn't sitting to well with me. Why would you feel that my personal feeling of the the quality of your enemy and his equipment in relationship to a pilots kill tally somehow makes you feel I'm degrading these pilots to just sportsmen? To me thats a cheap shot if anyone treated it like some kind of a sport it was these pilots were talking about. Did they not paint kill markings on thier aircraft in WW2? Didn't MvR have little silver cups made after every kill? If you have ever talk too a fighter pilots (and I have talked with a few) and ask them about any fighter engagement they were in. How many will tell you about the enemy pilot they dropped in on his six unseen and dispatched with a of burst of MG fire? Probably not very many, but most if not all will tell you about the enemy pilot that took them to the edge of thier skill, endurance and thier aircrafts capabilities. Once the engagement starts everything else becomes secondary and unimportant at that moment, it's you or him and thats all there is, and in the end one of you is going to win and the other lose. These are not my words but my friends Dad who was a Marine fighter pilot flying F4U's in the pacific during WW2. If it's some kind of sport it was that way long before I came along by the very guys who did these things, not by me. -

I really have no preferance over MvR or Voss, so anything I have said isn't a slam or praise of one pilot over the other. Yes they both were very good at thier trade. But IMHO there is more to a fighter pilot then the total number of planes he/she shoots down, that to me is secondary to the type and quality of aircraft destroyed and the quality of the opponent. Both MvR and Voss's tallies included a lot of two seaters and most were really little more then obsolete flying coffins. I'm not saying these were like a nice stroll in the park mind you but in both these pilots cases only around 1/3rd of thier kills were scouts the rest were two seaters. Where as pilots like Mannock (61 kills) and Collishaw (60 kills) 2/3rds of thier kills were scouts. I like to think that says something. -

I think the Voss legend wasn't born just because he tangled it up with a boat load of Se5a's and lost, he mixed it up with some of the very BEST pilots of 56 squadron and even though he lost he came very close to shooting many of these pilots down, thats why he has the legend status attached to him. If there is such a thing as a dying a warriors death then that was Voss's death no doubt. (Victories of the 56 pilots involved at time of the dogfight with Voss) McCudden 12 kills Bowman 16 kills Mayberry 13 kills Musprah 6 kills Davis 18 kills Hoidge 22 kills I don't think even MvR would have fared much better without some major luck if he was in Voss's shoes that day. -

Olham my friend read the whole post please. I have seen arguments up and down the internet that he could have excaped if he wanted too because of this or that reason and he couldn't have excape because of this or that reason. Some reasons voiced elsewhere are not too kind to Voss's memory at all. I just wan't to presenting a comparison of a fellow flier in a similar circumstance. In the end I stated what I like to believe what happened to Voss although there are many who would disagree. Brooks was very, very lucky that day, Voss unfortunately wasn't. The aircraft involved is irrelavent I think as being alone in a DrI against several Se5a's probably wouldn't be any different then being alone in a SPAD XIII against several DVII's. Tell you what, I'm waiting for my TrackIR to arrive as soon as it does I'll try that Voss mission in QC (although not being able to do that flat turn will make it tougher) and you in turn try the Brooks mission. I still believe it will be more luck then skill for either of our fliers to excape  -
Might be pretty original, cool story here if true http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Raymond_Brooks look in the After WWI section.

Fortunately will never know what Voss was thinking that day. Was it that he really couldn't excape or that his over confidence in his skill and the DrI was such he believed it was possible to shoot down all those Se5a's and live to tell the tale? In comparison Arthur Raymond Brooks (22nd Pursuit Sqd) found himself in a simular situation when he was in a life or death struggle with his lone Spad XIII facing off against 8 Fokker DVII's. His Spad had no clear cut advantages over the DVII and probably had several disavantages not unlike Voss's DrI against the Se5a. Brooks had said the whole time he was looking for an excape route while keeping the Germans off balance and actually feared everytime he downed a DVII. He felt what was keeping him alive was the fact he was the only target and the 8 DVII's had to watch out from running into each other trying to shoot him down (like Voss), which became less of a problem for the DVII's as their numbers dwindled. So was Brooks just lucky that day and Voss wasn't the day he met up with Mannock and crew? Was Voss looking for a way to best a squadron competitor (like McGuire vs Bong?) and Brooks was just looking for a way to excape a bad situation and survive? Or was Voss honestly also looking for that same excape but didn't find it in time? I would like to think it was because he couldn't find that excape and just ran out of time and luck rather then it was his ego and overconfidence that got him killed. -
Glad I could help

Don't really know if it would help BHaH sales much as the whole internet connection for SP has been known about for sometime. Sure you might some guys trickle this way because of this, but no mass exodus or it would have already happened. Now a mass exodus could still happen if the whole server goes to smash once it's major western release happens. I honestly think this is why the game seems to have been spread out in it's release, first the CIS, next North America and then Europe. They are saying it's because of finding distributors (777 Studios picked up N.America) but before this they were going with digital DL's for everyone else after CIS release. Coincidence? maybe time will tell.

Here's some decals from a company called SPADA. Excellent decals for all common scales, these are just 2 of the 4 sets they have available for the SPAD XIII. They also have markings for the Albatros DIII's Ni-11/17's and a few others. Here is the direct link to SPADA decals http://www.spada-decals.com/cariboost1/crbst_2.html

I agree with all you said peter01 as I have your FM installed in FE..amazing work BTW. And I have watch most if not all RoF videos..they are breathtaking. But the one and only major drawback to buying RoF is the stupid gotta connect for SP aspect. They tried to downplay this aspect of RoF by saying "well you only have to connect twice in SP" (once at the begining of play for automatic updates and varification and at the end to send stats) but to me thats two times too many. While I do have Broadband and this wouldn't present a problem in DL's or MP or whatever, it's the undeniable fact that this game wants access to my computer for me to SP every single time. What guarentee do I have from neoqb that a disgruntled employee or hacker might slip "something" into one of these packets and wreck havoc on my PC or worst yet collect personal financial information? Wasn't there just a news story awhile ago about some spy activity involving a seeming harmeless program (virus?) infecting computers all over the world, some in important governments agencies? The report said this program (virus?) was even able to turn security cameras on and off lol. Last I heard they still were not sure how it got in or who the perp was. Also what guarentees from neoqb do I have if they go under that I will still be able to play RoF? I got shouted down at another forum for bringing this up (like I was jinxing RoF or wishing ill will) but I felt it was a reasonable question. This isn't an issue of computer hardware advancements or a new OS making the game unplayable, but because there is no way to connect with a defunct server? This would be understandable if this game was being marketed as MP only but it's not so I felt it was a fair question. Rof to me is like a PC game paradox, looks to reach unbelievable highs in flight simming but has a albatross around its neck for the ability of an paying customer to play with no strings attached. -
Hi Barkhorn1x, If you go to the OFF General Discussion forum, in the top section of the page there is a Command Key Card for OFF sticky, I do believe its downloadable Cheers

Several scenes that I thought were of interest 1). When Stachel lost his wingman and he returned to base his squad mates were shocked at his attitude towards his missing wingman. When Stachel briefly explains about the trenches and not having time to grieve or even bury the dead, his squadron mates are doubfounded and have no clue because they never experianced it, but Stachel has. 2). When Stachel escorts the British 2 seater back to his base his squadron mates are impressed and amazed until he shoots it down right over the airfield, his squadron commander automatically assumes Stachel murdered this aircrew in cold blood to get a "confirmed" kill, but we as the audiance knew otherwise. But because of the squadrons resentment of Stachel he will never be believed that it was really self defense. This scene was the deal breaker, if Stachel would have been able to get that British 2 seater safely on the ground, I think he would have been accepted by his squadron mates finally. But unfortunately for Stachel it went to the other extreme, it really alienated him even further from the squadron. 3). At the end when Stachels aircraft breaks up and crashes his commanding officer now realizes that General Klugermann had knowingly sent Stachel to his death, he hesitated in returning the generals salute. Was it at that moment he realized that his beloved elite officer class was no better or worse then men like Stachel? I did like Flyboys (didn't care for the title much), the romance was kept to a small part of the movie not like Pearl Harbor. The flying scene's were pretty good and intense, except I would have prefered to see Albatroses instead of DrI's. I had followed up on the movie and was surprised to learn that most of the Nieuports 17s (seven I believe) were actually flying replicas not CGI. Several of the Dr.I's are flying replicas also, maybe thats why they used them in the movie and the fact that some of the audiance are not WWI buffs and the DrI was more of a reconizable German WWI aircraft say an Albatros or Pfalz. I think they tried somewhat to please both camps. I remember when I was 10 or 11 and I saw The Battle of Britian when released on the big screen. I really didn't care that the Bf-109's and He-111's were not actual WW2 aircraft, it was close enough and I loved that movie to this day the same for Tora,Tora,Tora. Hells Angles while okay isn't the greatest either, acting is typical 1930's and most of the German aircraft are SE5a's painted up to look like German aircraft, not to pretty and not even close.

Hi Olham, Take my word for it the Wingnut kits are excellent, probably the best WWI 1/32nd plastic scale models released to date. I have the AGV and the Se5a so far. I also have all the 1/32nd scale Roden kits released so far and with the exception of the Roden DrI and Albatros's the Wingnut kits are much more detailed out of the box then Rodens kits. The Wingnut Se5a has lots of kit parts that the Roden Se5a does not have, like the flare pistol and ammo drum by the control stick, 2 or 4 bladed prop and two choices of control sticks also the control pully inspection ports on the wings and horizontal stab are reliefed where the Roden kits is a decal. Here in the US the price differance between Rodens scout kits and Wingnuts scouts kits are almost even, can't compare the 2 seaters since Roden doesn't have any in 1/32nd scale. Roden has some serious competition in the WWI model market now. A little heads up that pic you posted of the Roden Pfalz DIII. That interior cockpit detail is not whats included in the kit. I suspect that photo was of a photoetched enhanced interior or scratch built, just wanted you to know so you don't purchase the kit thinking it's that detailed out of the box. Forgot to add the Wingnut Se5a includes two different fuselage's, on one the canvas is taught and the other has some canvas sag (ripples?) simulated like Fubar45s skin...very nice indeed.
