  1. Found another one.

Yes it is weird, a lot of simmers are missing out big time because of this CFS3 stigma. I know I was one of them till the price of BHaH dropped to $39.99. I then said what the heck I already have my copy of CFS3 that has not been on my HD for years....long story short it was the best $39.99 I have spent on a sim in quite awhile. Not trying to start anything but was over at SimHq earlier and seen a post linking to a recent video from one of the beta testers. I watched the video and while the view from inside the cockpit looked okay the terrain didn't look so hot (inside or outside view), no where near BHaH's quality in looks and items populating the landscape, it looked barren almost. If any of you guys get a chance check it out and see if you agree with me...or not

  3. OT The Japanese are quite innovative

Your welcome and greetings to you also Catfish, glad I could shed a little light on Japanese autogyros for the forum memebers
  4. Thoughts about OFF sales.

I understand what your saying Matt, but honestly mostly all eyes are on RoF right now that can't be helped and is beyond the devs control. Like I said the timing of BHaH release couldn't have been worse and trying to get peoples attention on BHaH right now is gonna be a hard sale, but that doesn't mean BHaH is a dead horse by any means. BHaH is a know commodity now and is getting better everyday thanks to the hard work of the devs, RoF on the other hand isn't a known commodity yet and while being innovative there are a lot of pitfalls and mountains for RoF to navigate and climb and any major problems could adversely effect RoF. Neoqb set the bar and hype real high for this one and anything less then a homerun could prove very bad indeed. This kind of reminds me of when B-17 TM8th was released without the much antisipated MP feature, lots of players didn't buy it because of no MP but the game did survive. The key to it's survival was it did have solid SP mode and a good SP campaign and while not attaining the status it could have with the MP promised it didn't do too bad and is still around and played today. Now RoF on the other hand seems to be banking hard on the MP aspect and if the SP and SP campaign mode is weak or non existant thats going to leave a lot of players out in the cold and I think a lot of people who passed on BHaH the first time are going to take another serious look at BHaH. So it's going to be a wait and see thing for now but the BHaH devs have to be ready to pounce if events turn in thier favor and take the gloves off and go for the brass ring (or the jugular ).
  5. Thoughts about OFF sales.

With all due respect tttiger if the polls that are being run at many forums (unscientific granted) and which the RoF developers blog does not have (or allow ) is any kind of a yardstick the numbers don't support your view that the only people who would buy or are interested in RoF is the MP'ers only club. The numbers support SP and SP/MP, with SP being the largest group and the MP only group being almost a non factor. My main point was if the SP is a gutted shell or really bad in RoF and some game requirements are not eventually changed then it will probably be to BHaH's good fortune, and to add on another aspect if BHaH could have got released six months to a year before the RoF games videos really started the push, BHaH sells would have been much better probably reguardless of BHaH using CFS3 as it's engine. As luck would have it timing for BHaH release couldn't have been probably worse, it's nobodys fault, sometimes things just happen that way. These fence sitters I was talking about are the ones waiting to see which sim gives them what they want in a SP WWI flight simulator BHaH or RoF. I had CFS3 when it first came out so I know the game very well, it was an unplayable mess upon release. But after having purchased BHaH and playing it I can honestly say concerning the SP aspect alone there is so little left to CFS3 in BHaH that if the devs could have released BHaH on one disk (not requiring the CFS3 disk) and P1 and P2 never happened, not many people would have guessed it was the CFS3 engine, I know I wouldn't have. I'm not spouting the devs mantra here, this is my personal experiance with BHaH. As for the babe in the woods comment this maybe true but I kind of like it, if you have a problem with BHaH your more then likely to have one of the devs jump in and try to help you out, try that at 1C and see if Oleg answers you, sometimes being small is a strength not a weakness.
  6. Thoughts about OFF sales.

Okay I'll play devils advocate and say probably what everyone is thinking but won't say, and I know I'm new to the BHaH forums so please don't flame me too hard for this. Sales for BHaH could see a huge up swing if one major thing happens, and that one major thing is if RoF fails to deliver on the hype. I say this because this was one thing that kept me from buying BHaH until recently. I followed BHaH for years and couldn't wait for the release. I would constantly watch the BHaH website for each new video releaase and just would be awe struck by what I was seeing, but just when Pol and company was ready here came RoF. It honestly believed that RoF had done what I didn't think could be done and that was to one up what BHaH was offering. But just like anything the devil is in the details and as RoF progressed I didn't like what I was seeing. The always on connection requirement, only two flyables to start with, a 1917 only start date, a poor SP aspect and campaign and no reassurances from the Devs that RoF will be playable if the servers go belly up or become a pay to play MMORPG finally convinced me BHaH was the only true modern all incompassing WWI flight sim. I think there are a lot more guys like me out there, but unlike me are still sitting on the fence so to speak when it comes down to if they will buy BHaH or RoF. Since none of us have a crystal ball it's anyone guess how this story will end but for me I feel I made the right choice in going with BHaH and my gut feeling is BHaH is going to do very well here in the near future.
  7. OT The Japanese are quite innovative

The Japanese autogyro was made by Kayaba and came in three versions the Ka-1, Ka-1 KAI and Ka-2. The design was based upon the Kellet KD-1A autogyro from the USA. The Japanese Army proccured a Kellet machine in 1939 but it was damaged beyond repair shortly after its arrival in Japan and the remains were sent to K.K. Kayaba Seisakusho a small company doing autogyro research at the time with instructions to develop a similar machine. The Ka-1 was powered by a 240hp Argus inline, the Ka-1 KAI was a varient of the Ka-1 with powder rockets in the rotor blade tips while the Ka-2 was powered by a 240hp Jacobs radial, all were two seaters, all types were three bladed. Production of the Ka-1 was 240 machines (including one Ka-1 KAI) and only 1 machine of the Ka-2 varient. Some of these autogyros were operated on land, others were on the Japanese Army light escort aircraft carrier the Akitsu Maru (yes the Japaenes Army had it's own AC carriers all six of them). The Akitsu Maru was sunk by a USN sub in 1944. This info came from R.J Francillon excellent book Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War printed by the Naval Institute Press. First pic is the Kayaba Ka-1, second is the Kellet KD-1A.
  8. D.VII's in three flavors?

I think there is more to the Fokker DVII being singled out in the treaty of Versailles other then it being a superlative fighter. Sometimes facts get intermingled with myth. The Fokker DVII, A6m2 Zero, P-51D, Supermarine Spitfire, Fw-190 and Me-262 are just some AC that have a mythical status. I do believe the main reason the DVII was mentioned in the treaty was somewhat about the aircraft but more about the man and the company that bore his name Anthony Fokker. He wasn't a German national he was Dutch and so the victors couldn't punish him the way they did the other German aircraft industries. So the Ententie made sure he couldn't slide back to his home country and continue making the DVII, the banned it specifically in the treaty. A little pay back for all the headaches Mr.Fokker and his company caused the Ententie? After the war Mr. Fokker did go back to his homeland and continued making aircraft, while he did continue making fighters and some bombers nothing approached the status of the war machines his company produced during WWI. Now commercial aviation is a whole different story for the Fokker company. I was wondering something, as far as WWI aircraft manufacturers go is Fokker the only company still around?
  9. Large scale models

Wow just found out about the wingnut site earlier today from a friend and came back here tonight to link it and seen we have other modelers up on this good stuff I might have to put my Roden Se5a and Pfalz DIII on the back burner after seeing the Wingnut versions WOW! And an Albatros DV and a Sopwith Pup coming too  And finally some 1/32nd 2 seaters also, the LVG and Re8 will be high on my list, and a 1/32nd Gotha! I think I just died and went to heaven Ken Foran is just amazing, I'd like to have 1/1000th of his skill
  10. Large scale models

Hey Olham, I thought your handle look familiar if you use the same at LSP. I use to post and visit there quite abit untill about a year ago. Got into a big scape then about the cost of model kits driving the hobby to the brink of collapse, wasn't very well recieved I moved on and found much better sites that actually showcase the newer WWI AC kits available, LSP seemed content to just keep rehashing articals on the ancient Revell 1/28th kits. So what do you think of Rodens next 1/32nd scale releases the DH.2 and the Siemens Schuckert D III ? I think Rodan is suppose to release four more 1/32nd WWI Ac this year and my inside contact said one is going to be the Albatros DV/a . Just a heads-up for anybody that might dabble in model kits or have not built one since they were a young lad. There are several very nice WWI AC model kits available right now in 1/32nd scale. They are all newer tooled kits so assembly is fairly easy, also a fair amount of aftermarket is available so you can add lots of enhancements and different individual markings if you desire. All these kits (most) can be had for $60.00 USD or less. Here's a short list RODEN 1/32nd: Albatros family: DI, DII, DIII (several varients) RAF Se5a Woolsey Viper version and Hispano Suiza versions Fokker DrI and FI Fokker DVI SPAD VIIc DH.2 (out this month) Pfalz D.III Siemens Schuckert D.III (soon) AVIS 1/32nd: Fokker DVIII (E.1) SPECIAL HOBBY 1/32nd: Nieuport 11 Nieuport 16 Morane Saulnier monoplane Hobbycraft 1/32nd: SPAD XIII Camel F.1 (Le Rhone and Gnome powered versions) Fokker DrI and F.1 (cheaper then Roden kits but less detail and not as accurate). 11. I seem to be having a slight problem with my wingman. Seems like whever I spot a enemy AC this guy won't follow me and stays on the flight path the rest of the squad is taking. I don't fly as the main flight leader but I thought your wingman (if assigned one) is suppose to stick to you like glue. No matter if I use the R key or the H key he stays with the main flight. Here's an example of my last flight. I was 2nd element flight leader of a 6 AC two flight element. The second element consisted of myself, my wingman and another flyer (not sure what his function was, another wingman?). Anyway we came out of warp because of an enemy aircraft trigger, this also coinsided with a waypoint direction change. Using the padlock I locked onto a flight of AC going in the opposite direction the rest of the flight would be taking with the new waypoint. I zoomed in and seen they were single mid-fuselage winged AC, since there are no other single mid-fuselage winged AC in the game I knew they were German Eindeckers. I moved to intercept and hit the R key, thinking my 2 wingmen are following me (at least one anyway). Well I blundered into a gaggle of 8 Fokker E1's. I dropped one on my first pass, but quickly one was on my tail, I padlocked him and it was Max Immelmanns green eindecker, he got a couple hits on me before I reversed it and was on his 6. I got a couple hits on him when my DH.2 was being hit from behind again, I padlock this latest threat and it's Oswald Boelcke, man am I in deep . Somehow I managed to keep these two from getting a decent bead on me while I pressing the H key frantically. My DH.2 is getting peppered now and I'm in the weeds with next to no options, two cracker jack pilots on my 6 and the other Fokkers cutting of any exit. So I figure what the heck, might as well and see what my WINGMAN is up too. I hit the CTRL-TAB key and there they are flying blissfully along with the 1st element, yeah I'm all alone I was out of options so I put the DH.2 down for a rough landing (I was on my side of the lines), I survived to fight another day, but what am I doing wrong here?
  12. Hey wingman where ya going?

Okay figured it out, really need to stop posting problems and read the FAQs first
  13. Hey wingman where ya going?

Immelmann and Boelcke both on my 6, I'd would have bought my wingmen as much beer as they wanted if they would have been there for this one! Whats the chances of having these two hit you at the same time, boy when I step in it I really step in it
  14. Sound gone OFF

I have experianced something along the same lines. It happens in QC and if I select a starting mission position at anything but on the airfield. For example if I start the mission at 5,000ft the game loads, but does not show the screen with the three pilots. Next thing I know I'm at 5,000 ft with no sound. I cannot exit the game except for having to ctrl-alt-delete several times. then before I can start a new mission I have to reload my Saitek X45 drivers because my Vista control panel is saying I have no joysick activated . I'm really at a loss as to what is going on here, but being I mostly play campaigns I just have ignored it for now. One side benefit is it has made me very proficent at scramble missions
  15. Beware the Strutters

I agree about letting the Stutters and F2b's pass on by . I am flying four seperate campaigns (one for each nation) and these two Allied planes are giving my German pilot Leutnant Hugo Shriver real fits. He has barely landed 4 pretty shot up early Albatros DIII's for mixing it up with these two AC . On the last mission I flew as Leutnant Shriver, I did manage to bring down a Stutter. But it wasn't because of my extraordinary piloting skills The DIII's engine was hit and sputtering bad, I was just trying to make it to a friendly airfield before she gave up the ghost. For some reason the Stutter pilot who caused my woes came diving down (I think to finish me off) he overshot and ended up right in front of my spandaus, a long burst and his wing came off and he spun into a lake that was below Finally I thought that I had redeemed myself to my Jasta and the Kaiser for the three (soon to be four) wrecked Albatros I brought back to base . I made it to the friendly airbase (barely) and ended the mission and thought I was going to the claim page. To add insult to injury the claim page didn't come up, so no claim . So next time I think I'll just gives these guys a wide berth  Yeah live and let live....for Leutnant Hugo Shrivers sake
  16. Rise of Flight review on SimHQ Forum

I use to mess around with MP and SP too Jedi, but available time pushed me out of serious MP. I do have time for the airquake stuff if I wanted too, but co-op is really the only MP I would play. Unfortunately that requires time for training and being able to get on line and fly when your needed...so I'm out for now. Yes I agree with what you said about Il-2, I have 1946 but rarely fly it. Right now I spend most of my free time with FE, BHaH, BoB2, WoV&WoE, B-17 II, GPL, Steel Fury and SHIV.
  17. Rise of Flight review on SimHQ Forum

Good point Jedi Master and I agree 100% This whole mess with RoF flight just get stranger and stranger everytime one of the devs make a statement on their blog. Their latest was for a call for closed beta testers, but only open to active virtural squadrons ? They have said before that SP was as important to them as MP, but their latest action seems to say otherwise. This game is looking more and more like the WoW for flight sims, even the fanboys are sounding like they are a little peeved right now
  18. Rise of Flight review on SimHQ Forum

Well several weeks have passed since my last post here and the whole internet connection thing has been well defined by the devs now. Such a shame for RoF that neoqb have decided to go this way, especially for the SP side of this game. I'll admit I kind of waffled both ways on buying RoF but after watching the news last night and seeing that report on the cyberspying, well RoF is definately out for me in it's present form. It's to easy I would think for someone to extract info from your computer if you kind of allow it too. I know I might be reaching here, but after seeing what some of these persons are able to do if they want to it's just not worth it no matter how great it looks. Thank God for FE and BHaH my WW1 fix should be fine for the next couple of years.
  19. Running on empty?

I recently started a campaign for the German side in 1915 my pilot is flying a Fokker EIII. About the 5th mission I pulled a "Lone Wolf" patrol. I loaded up the mission and off I went. I didn't have much time too play so I was using the warp feature. Several waypoints later I was booted out of warp with a low fuel message. I checked my map and seen I had not even come close to finishing my assigned waypoints. I was down to 9 or 12% fuel load and a looooong way from home over enemy territory . I did manage to almost make it to a friendly airbase just over the front lines, I had to do a dead stick landing into a field about 200 yards from the airfield . My pilot survived and I wasn't captured, so I started another mission. I pulled the same "Lone Wolf" patrol again. Thinking I didn't pay attention to something critical in the last one I checked my fuel load, it was 100% hummm okay. I then checked my flight plan it was something like 220 miles round trip. SO just for the heck of it I checked my specs on the Fokker EIII, found out my max range was 220 miles! Did pilots in WWI routinely fly to the very edge of their aircrafts max range? Or is this a bug maybe? Or am I doing something wrong? Long story short I flew the mission but did not use warp, I figured I'd fly my assigned flight path until my fuel got down to 55% and head home. I managed to bag an observation ballon and 3 Be2's of a flight of 5 . I ended up getting shot down as I got careless and chased the last Be2's too close to their home airfield and the archie got me . I crashed landed was wounded, survived but was now a POW, bummer.
  20. Running on empty?

Thanks uncleal thats exactly what I have been looking for
  21. Running on empty?

Thanks for the response guys and I will do as you advise But I do have one more question and this refers to the fist lone wolf patrol I did. I forgot to mention that when I entered warp I couldn't stop it. It rapped off several waypoint in a row when I noticed my fuel % getting below 25%. I couldn't find how to come out of warp but I assumed (wrongly) that at this fuel level I must be close to home base and finished my patrol. It's when it kicked me out of warp with a low fuel warning I realized something was very wrong, thats when I checked the map and seen just how far I had to go. Is there a button to disengage warp? Or is this only possible with a triggered event like enemy aircraft, damage or finishing your goals not after every waypoint?
  22. First Impressions

Well guys had a few days to check this puppy out and over all so far it seems pretty damn good. I'll list what I have and seen and liked so far and a few thinks I won't say I dislike but maybe just don't understand right now. Right off the install went really well and smooth, no problems on my new system with Vista 64 HP . I was disappointed when I went to play my first mission as my GFX looked really substandard and not what I had seen in the videos released by OBD. But after a little digging I found out that it was my fault for not understanding how the CFS Config worked. Could have been much easier if I would have updated to ver 1.28 before playing . After all this was sorted out, the planes ,terrain, effects and clouds are stunning just like the OBD videos I always take baby steps when learning a new sim, easy flight model, unlimited ammo, unlimited fuel, no gun jams etc. I only have played QC as I want to get a good feel for the BHaH and gradually start moving from easy to hard settings before I commit a pilot or pilots to a campaign. But even in easy mode one think struck me right away about the AI in this game, it very good and varied and rookie AI doen't mean it's a turkey shoot all the time. Sure some of the rookie AI pilots do the usual thing, you put a couple rounds in them and they fly straight and level, meat on the table. But some of them do react and really do to put up a fight. I was flying in my favorite mount the Se5a and fighting 4 albatros Dva w/rookie AI pilots. The first kill was easy, a few rounds , straight and level, a few more rounds from my vickers and lewis and down he went spinning into the ground. But to my surprise his fellow pilots were not waiting for their turn to die, they were lining up on my six and coming in fast. I had the altitude so I chopped power and did a low yo-yo and put me on their six as they over shot me. I closed in and unlike most sims I had played these guys did something I didn't expect. Instead of all three or at least two keeping formation as most rookie AI seem to do these guys all split different ways! One dived straight down, one shot to the right and one climbed away to the left. To make a long story short, 30 minutes later I downed the third Dva but I crashed trying to down the last one. I let the fight get down to tree level, got target fixated and pulled nose up trying to get a definate kill shot (he was THAT close to me), but because I didn't watch my airspeed I stalled my Se5a and augered in . This should be real intersting when I get up to veteran or ace AI Okay now to the not so good, and so far it's really only one thing and thats the game control documentation. My first attempt in QC was my other favorite mount the early Ni-17. I was really confused as why I couldn't reload the lewis, after several frustrating flights and searching what documentation that came with the DVD I still didn't know how this was done. I did a search here and found a post another person asked about the same thing. The reply this person got was even in unlimted ammo mode you only get what the Ni-17 carried and reloads were automatic. But this poster said he wasn't absolutely sure about this. So thats about the only minor grip I have so far and if anyone can point me to better game documentation I would highly appreciate it.

Thanks for the reply catch, like I told Rick while I do like the early Nieuports the top wing only MG always did give me a little problem, more pratice and I'll have it sorted out. Its my pleasure to always meet a fellow Se5a driver. The German AC were more colorful but underneth that plain coat of PC10 on the Se5a beats the heart of a pure killing machine, she might not look fancy but she is all business
