Adjusted Ranges, Stock T-72A, and Marcfighter M1A1
Jeremiah Weed replied to EricJ's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
It is the right gun, M256 is the American designation for the Rheinmetall 120mm cannon. The Germans call it the L/44. Same gun. -

Oh, I'm not criticizing or trying to be a know it all by any means man if you thought that. The M256 def can hit targets at 3000 meters. The question is would you? That is a pretty hard shot, you would want to use a chemical energy round as opposed to a kinetic energy round (IE HEAT over SABOT) and pray to God your boresight is tight. And if you have done an MRS update before shooting... lets just say it is a hard shot. I'd leave it there, I was just making an off beat joke. (Oh and of course your friend probably said he can accurately kill targets at 4500 meters or something, over bragging is something tankers are really good at!) -

I don't understand the way the game engine works for ground objects fully so I have this question: Why is the T-72's gunstabilization set to "TRUE" while the M1A1's is set to "FALSE?" The max range you have set to 3000 meters but the "visual range" is 2000 doesn't this mean that the AI won't see targets past 2000 meters or does "max detect range" set at 4800 where the AI detects the targets what is the difference between the 2? Why is nightsight set to "FALSE" does this matter to the game engine or will it still kill targets at night with this setting? Why is the M1A1 given 64 rounds of ammo? Is this to compensate for it not shooting as accurately as an actual M1? I'm not criticizing, I'm building some technicals right now and trying to learn. (Also as a former M1A1 gunner, I can tell you shooting at a target 3000 meters away will result in getting kicked in the back of the head by the tank commander. ) -

He probably would produce a better product, but unless you try you will never get the experience he has. From what I have seen of this community if you ran into hiccups you couldn't figure out people would be willing to help. I'm working on building some technical trucks right now. They are going to be nowhere near perfect, but I have little doubt I will get the help I need from those experienced personnel to put out a good product. I also gain a lot of experience for the next project. -
I've sat in a lot of "classified" briefings and done a lot of "classified" ops, and I'll tell you this, sometimes a lot of the "classified" intel we received was useless, well not useless per say it just wasn't really needed. Some stuff that is secret, I had no idea why it was secret, obviously I'm not going to go into it, but it seemed trivial. Some things that were secret at the time like numbers of a/c and types in a particular flight probably aren't secret anymore, but that stuff really isn't that interesting. But you are right, a lot of the stuff that was secret was the identity of the intel collector.

Kill Markings
Jeremiah Weed replied to Jug's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I might be mistaken, but I think this feature has been added "stock" to the new patches. -
Perhaps in this incident, I haven't really looked at the details of it, but over the past several years Somalian Pirates and even more so around Indonesia have murdered several merchant sailors. Places like Somalia are hard to "fix." When people are more bound to tribal/ethnic/clan identities than a national identity aid is wasted. You give food to them and it is seized by a warlord to feed his people, and you have rivals now fighting them to gain control of the food. The UN already tried this and failed at it.

That article didn't mention their rules of engagement. Are they going to be allowed to kill these scum bags or will they have to go through some ROE designed by some politician that will not be effective and not deter any piracy? The only thing people like that understand is force.

Killing communists never gets old to me, in any era.. I just wish I could get good at using the "hard" HUD setting in planes with no radar. -
Or sell it to countries we'll actually have to fight... But yeah, I feel bad for the crew

Fixed it for you For every deadly submarine/aircraft mishap they have that we hear about, think about the one that aren't as newsworthy that we don't hear about...

Some days, I would kill to be forced to have some kind of duty, or a 7 or 8 month deployment to get away from my wife. Then I go back to sleep until 10, then get up do some chores, go to a doctor appointment or two, make dinner and spend an evening with her knowing the only people trying to kill me will be made out of pixels. I love retirement, even if it was way to early.

If someone pissed hot, I didn't even want to look at them again. I mean, when you are getting a 10% every week and a 100% once a month like we were in the Army, (in the AF it was a bit more relaxed, only a 100% once a quarter) and you still think you can get high, get the hell out of my unit. The DUI thing, I'm kind of not into. Drinking and driving is pretty much one of the stupidest things you can do, you are just asking to kill somebody, seriously it is irresponsible, and dangerous to yourself, more than likely another member of your unit who is in the car with you, and all the people on the street not breaking the law. But, I got a DUI when I was an E-1 and 18 y/o right out of my 16 week OSUT training at Fort Knox. I got my UCMJ, did my 45 and 45 gave half my pay for 2 months to the old soldier's home, and straightened the hell out. I never drove drunk again in my life, I can tell you that. And I rarely even drank after that, and if I did I never left my room, well until I was 21 and got a wife and stuff. After that, I learned my job, did it well and advanced. I learned from my mistake. I ended up transfering services, but I did want to re-up in the Army until another opurtunity presented itself, now if I had a bar from renlisting starting my first weekend at my unit in the military, you think I would have made an effort? I would have been just another dirt bag looking to get over on Big Sarge. A DUI is a mistake, and I don't think one stupid mistake should kill your career before it starts, especially in a time where retention is low, bring in a new guy, and not let a guy that knows his job stay in cause of one dumb night down range? Now obviously it is different if it is an NCO or Officer, there is no excuse for that, you need to lead by example. And of course in some cases, the guy that gets the DUI probably needs ar bar to re-up, so it really should be done on a case by case basis. Oh and in no way do I endorese or condone drinking and driving.

Wyvern Video
Jeremiah Weed replied to SkippyBing's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Is successfully ejecting from underwater worked into this model? I didn't know all that much about this aircraft, other then knowing it was in the Suez, 50's and 60's British A/C are not my strong point. Looking into it though, this this was quite the widow maker. 98 production A/C built. In service for 3 1/2 years. 68 accidents, 39 A/C lost (2 of which were in combat) 13 fatalities. Losing 33% of your aircraft type to accidents in just over 3 years isn't good juju. But it looks to me that it was the bird wasn't right for the ship, the high g's from the cat were flaming out the engine, not that it was the aircraft being that bad. -
Afghanistan Terrain
Jeremiah Weed replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I'm not to familiar with the target area part of the engine, I was thinking one target area around Takur Ghar, aka Robert's Ridge (RIP Chap, see you on the other side) with a crashed 'hook or 'hawk placed as a piece of the terrain like a building and the US/Tali targets were just statically placed there with maybe some SA-7s and light AAA in the area to offer a challenge. The drawbacks would be that this situation would be on the map at all times, whether you were assigned a mission in that target area or not, and to get a mission assigned to those targets it would have to be a strike mission, and the enemy/friendly situation would be the same every time, so replay value would be low, unless you want to try to do it with several types of munitions/AC, but even then... I guess it would probably be better to work it into a single mission somehow instead of working it into the terrain. -
Just purchased First Eagles.....Holy Cow..
Jeremiah Weed replied to krgf15's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
1. I hope your PFD at least helped pay for it (and for those of you that don't know, I'm not talking about a life vest!) 2. I bought this about 2 months ago, and it took me about 3 or 4 days of actively trying to actually get a kill, once I got the hang of it I fell in love with the simplicity. I hadn't flown a WW1 sim since The Red Baron from Sierra/Dynamix. I fly it about as equal as I do SFP1/WOx. -
Afghanistan Terrain
Jeremiah Weed replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I'm working on some Technicals for my own amusement, as I am no expert at modeling by any means, If I am satisfied enough with them that I won't be embarrassed by other people seeing some shotty work, I'll send them to whoever so they can be included as targets in this terrain if that would be helpful. I am just thinking out loud, but if you made a target area with a downed Crashhawk (a S***hook would be more appropriate, but I'm pretty sure there is no model as of yet), and a static squad of US Infantry and put static Taliban troops ecircling it just out of small arms range of the US guys (so they wouldn't kill them before the CAS go there) 1. would they shoot at each other, and 2. Would it work with the game engine. While it is not something I like to think about, Missions like this are a grim reality of war in this terrain. Danger close CAS is quite a challenge. I imagine it could also be done in an 80's scenerio with a HIP and a Soviet squad. Not trying to step on anybodys toes, just an idea I had. -
I got a DUI, on base, at 18 y/o, without valid insurance my first weekend at my unit....and was an E-5 3 years later. I had a troop that came to my unit, pissed hot, went with us to Kuwait for 4 months and our extended deployment for Operation Desert Fox, 18 months after coming up hot, was an E-4 and 2 months after that got a lateral transfer to CPL, was a tank gunner leading soldiers. Of course this was in the Army. Because of that DUI, it took LORs from everybody in ACC that was in SAC with my dad to get me into the Air Force, and possibly some underhanded dealings by a recruiter that will remain nameless, to get me into the Air Force, and the type of unit I was in, any screw up you would be doing some other job in a heart beat.

Things like this are why I was glad I had jobs women couldn't have.
-
If these guys had been my troops, I wouldn't have done anything, Because, what people do on their own time (that is not against the law) was really not any of my own business as an NCO. If some troop wants to be stupid and let some other troop KO him on their off time, not my concern, unless some other variables arise, and it didn't seem that they did, so, no harm, no foul.

New to Wings Over Europe
Jeremiah Weed replied to Emil.H.91's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Emil.H.91 - There are many aircraft available here at Combat Ace in the Downloads section. There is not a SU-25 available as of yet, however if I am not mistaken one is being worked on. If you patch your game to the newest patch, a lot of the updates will not work properly, however, you can read the official September 08 patch thread and get the hang of what you need to do to get some of the stuff compatible with the new patch. It takes some work, but is worth it. If you just want to get to flying to get the hang of the sim before you end up doing tweaking I would suggest holding off on the patch until you get the hang of what you are doing. -

No kidding Anyways, Ironclad, yes that/those are 333rd A/C. If I am making out the tail number on the hen in the first picture correctly, I am told in 2003-04 it had a lot of avionics problems. Good to see it flying again. -

Craig - I could be off base, but I don't think sparkomatic was trying to state that the F-15 is better than the Typhoon. I think what they were trying to say is it is funny to them that people post a picture of a Typhoon in an advantageous position against and F-15 and use this as their sole argument that the Typhoon is 150 times better than an F-15. You are right the kill ratio is based on a lot of factors. And it doesn't mean it is more capable than the Typhoon, but as it stands now the F-15 stands on the top of the mountain. Nolan Ryan struck out 5714 batters, most of them were inferior hitters, but he still has 5714 strike outs and is at the top of the mountain in that category. With the current trend of warfare, I doubt that the Typhoon will ever go head to head with anything other than "inferior aircraft and against less capable air forces, lacking in both training and support equipment." The days of 2 military forces that are both on equal footing with the cutting edge of technology squaring off are long gone. I'm not saying any A/C is better than the other, just thinking that comparing A/C of different generations head to head is a bit fruitless. -
A little help here
Jeremiah Weed replied to GodSaveTheUSA73's topic in Military and General Aviation
This didn't really "change the face" of air warfare though. Just because something was innovative or the "first and only" doesn't mean it changed the way war was fought. Aircraft were already doing CAS before the A-10 was introduced. -
