  1. Which countries did you visit, when and how was it?

I have been to several countries for various reasons. Canada on many occasions - Toronto, Vancouver, all over New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. I like Vancouver a lot, was pretty neutral about the Eastern Provinces, and don't care for Toronto all that much. Mexico - Does TJ really count? Republic of Korea - my least favorite of the East Asian countries I have visited. Japan - I Enjoyed it here to an extent. Thailand - Probably would have been better if I wasn't doing training while sick. Singapore - Never left the Air Base. Germany - I liked it here, I traveled all over the West. France - Never got off the plane while returning home from Kuwait in 1998, So this doesn't really count. Kuwait - This place is not my favorite place in the world, I'll leave it at that. Uzbekistan - No comment. Tajikistan - Probably the worst country I have ever been to. Afghanistan - No comment. Iraq - No comment. Qatar - Never left the air base. United Kingdom - Have not left the airport, but will be spending 24 hours in London next month. Iceland - Such a beautiful place I could probably live here and never leave. There are a couple I haven't mentioned for certain reasons. I have also been to all 50 states and Guam. I'm going to Russia in May.
  2. True, I was talking more about the US, The French should definitely be included, considering they had troops occupying both Berlin and and West Germany and flew Airlift missions, and the amount of French air power was so small at the time, no doubt they would have sent their naval air arm to land bases to bolster the forces if shooting started. To follow up on what CA_Stary said, the Poles had the Il-2 but was used in a training role and retired in 1949. Just speculating, but I'm not sure at this point that the Poles or Czechs could realistically be counted on to help the Soviets, with air power anyways.
  3. bad to the bone

The same thing almost happened to the real BONE...
  4. Well The IL-2 Was also only in use by Bulgaria, the Czechs, and the Poles at this time too (the Poles withdrew them in '49 or Early '50) The Corsair should not be included, because the Navy/Marines have no role in this fight. The P-47s were only in the National Guard at this time, and pretty much on the way out, and since you really haven't described any need for CAS, the likelihood of sending obsolete P-47s to fight air battles is very slim. I would leave Atomic warfare out, Who are you (as the Allies) going to target with these weapons on this map? East German cities that have no control over their Soviet occupiers? Polish cities full of Polish citizens who have no control over the Soviets? 3 Years after the end of WW2, the Allies were not going to allow Germans to fly combat aircraft, and in reality if you get down to it, the Berlin Airlift was about keeping the Allied soldiers there supplied, not helping the Germans, and keeping West Berlin in the Western Allies hands so that the Soviets didn't gain more influence.
  5. I did extensive research on the Berlin Airlift for my Master's, I can be of some historical help if you wish. You will want to add the Vampire to the RAF, and while the "fun factor" of flying as the Germans is interesting, you might look at adding the small at the time, but effective French Air Force instead, as they were occupiers of Germany and flew missions during the Airlift. The MiG-15 was in Service at this time. The LA-15 would be only in the tail end of this scenario and in very small numbers LA-5 Was pretty much only in Service with the Czechs at this time. It would be great to see some of the Soviet A/C that were not anywhere near as successful as the MiG-15 like the MiG-9 and Yak-15 though that were in service around this time in small numbers. Also, Truman wouldn't have to deploy "Marines", as the Allied Occupation Armies were still there in force, and Germany wouldn't be fending off anything, as the blockade was in the Soviet occupied zone. Remember at this time Germany, East or West, was not a sovereign nation, but under control of the Allies, May 23rd 1949 is when West Germany was "Created" but they still didn't have sovereignty or were allowed to have a military until 1954. I could go in to a mass of detail about this, but the Celtics are on
  6. This guy showed up right after I left the unit, but hats off to him: http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,185866,00.html
  7. The Army and Navy have Good Conduct Medals too right? When I started out my military career in the Army in the mid-1990's I remember the Army GCM was passed out every 3 years. I don't know what is going on with it there or in the Navy, but it is pretty much a tradition. I'd rather have a GCM than a Bronze Star for not actually fighting.
  8. It's the BLT's B-Day!

Happy Birthday, I guess sharing a birthday with this guy is pretty cool:
  9. I would never wear that Bronze Star. In Allied Force there were Pro-Supers getting Bronze Stars that never left England, the BS Bronze Stars got even worse after 9/11 in not only the Air Force, but in all services. Around 05 or 06 they started clamping down on the awards though. Bronze Stars started becoming deployment awards for officers and NCOs, and it was lessening the prestige of the award. While what this guy did was outstanding and beyond the call of duty, he should have received an MSM, which is the non-combat equivalent of the Bronze Star, the wording of the Bronze Star criteria is a little vauge, and they are working on rewording it so that you actually have to be involved in ground combat to be eligable, not just supporting operations. Luckily there is the V device to distinguish the two. Sorry for the rant, nothing against that guy, he did a great job, I just got jaded by it when I wrote one of my guys up for a Bronze Star for doing something I deemed heroic, and it getting downgraded to an Air Force Commindation Medal, while supply Majors who never left the damn wire were getting awarded them,.
  10. Combat Controllers aren't your average airmen either. Their aren't Military Channel specials about Combat Controllers, Combat Controllers aren't characters in lame action movies, Combat Controllers aren't modeled in video games. Combat Controllers are unassuming and get little public recognition, and that is the way they (we) like it. This little club is full of guys just like this guy, scary thought for people that want to oppose them, don't you think?
  11. To be fair though, in TW games, most missions you are tasked with, you really don't need air refueling, I mean for instance you aren't doing real world Afghanistan scenarios, where you get airborne and loiter until you are called for a mission if needed. You get your mission, fly to the already designated target, hit it, and go home. It would be different if your mission was to take off, go to a point and wait for TSGT Weed to call you in with TIC, then go refuel, and if you still have ordnance left loiter some more waiting for the next call. I don't think anyone is debating the need for real world tankers, but in the TW world, they would be more gimicky than anything. Then you would run into problems with, if it was needed in every mission, some people might not be able to become experts at it, then the sim loses its fun value for them, and you lose a player or even a modder. I am not a pilot, I don't play these games to pretend I am one, I play them to have fun, so I don't do everything real pilots do IE: landing lights canpopies opening/closing. All that stuff is fine and dandy and it's cool if you like that, but if say 33% of the time I can't even get to the target because I am too busy crashing trying to refuel on the way in, I'd quit playing, and if I had to refuel on the way home, I'd hit escape every single time I got "Mission Accomplished" so that there would't be a chance of error ending my campaign.
  12. Mystery of the Georgian UAV is solved

Oh man, that is too funny, especially "MiG-29 with thrust vectoring"
  13. It would be possible to make the skins of course, but to answer your question of why not, well it would have been hard since the T-45 Ghosthawk didn't fly until like '87 or '88 or something.
  14. Iranian drone 'shot down in Iraq'

Because you can... In November 2001 I called in a 2000 pound JDAM in on a machine gun position, I didn't have to, but it was awesome.
  15. Iranian drone 'shot down in Iraq'

Give me some minutes and I can tell you the callsign But if I had to guess, I'd say yes, I just want to know, FOX 2 or GUNS
  16. Iranian drone 'shot down in Iraq'

The reason it took 10 minutes to shoot down... they had to wait for it to no longer be over something it would cause collateral damage to when it fell out of the sky. It was an a2a kill too.
  17. Your first combat flight sim...

Megafortress Then a couple years later with a new computer Aces of the Pacific then Aces over Europe, then US Navy Fighters, US Marine Fighters, Advanced Tactical Fighters, NATO Fighters, but I never had Fighters Anthology.
  18. In Flight Reloading system

Not only is this impractical form a technology stand point, it is impractical from an operational standpoint as well.
  19. I was going through some boxes I haven't seen since maybe early 2001 and got excited that I found this:
  20. Outstanding advice. Also, mods with a self installer, I usually "install" them into their own folder and check over the files to ensure they won't conflict with other mods or have outdated information that can screw up other stuff.
  21. Start with the enhanced terrain tiles of your choice for the terrain I suggest CA_Stary's stuff, as anyone will attest it is top notch. Then I would add the wide sky mod and an effects mod of your choice. Then I always put in the "New Nations" mod, and the medals mod, but those are just personal preferences. After you get all that stuff straightened out look at what a/c, weapons, and ground objects you want to add. That is my approach to any new TW install.
  22. I voted no for the same reasons as Dave. I'm not a programmer but I think it might be hard to code it into this engine, especially the dynamic campaign and random generated missions. I could be off base on that assumption though.
  23. Last entry in your weapondata.ini will look something like this: [WeaponData1738] <--------- SEE THE NUMBER TypeName=PTB-760_MiG19 FullName=PTB-760 Drop Tank ModelName=TANK760_19 Mass=820.000000 Diameter=0.440000 Length=5.260000 SubsonicDragCoeff=0.200000 SupersonicDragCoeff=0.770000 AttachmentType= SpecificStationCode= NationName= StartYear=0 EndYear=0 Availability=0 BaseQuantity=0 Exported=FALSE ExportStartYear=0 ExportEndYear=0 ExportAvailability=0 WeaponDataType=5 MaxFuelAmount=608.000000 Asymmetrical=FALSE [WeaponDataXXX] <------- paste this here and change xxx to the next number in the sequence (in this example 1739) TypeName=Tank_F3 FullName=Tornado F3 Tank ModelName=TankF3 Mass=1230.619995 Diameter=0.620000 Length=4.760000 SubsonicDragCoeff=0.200000 SupersonicDragCoeff=0.770000 AttachmentType= SpecificStationCode= NationName= StartYear=0 EndYear=0 Availability=0 BaseQuantity=0 Exported=FALSE ExportStartYear=0 ExportEndYear=0 ExportAvailability=0 WeaponDataType=5 MaxFuelAmount=1090.910034 Asymmetrical=FALSE
  24. It's no problem, talking smack to Cleveland Cavs fans for one game on Friday is a bit long in the tooth now anyways. Besides if it makes 1 person not be able to enjoy this website, it is one person too many
  25. I put the New Fulcrums in my WOE "play around" install and flew a CAP in Soviet MiG-29C in 1989 that turned out to be a real Cold War type mission. Took off and was vectored to radar contacts, locked one up, but I noticed the target was moving slow as a snail. I closed in, and because I did this I avoided an international incident: I forgot I had them installed in this install.. I did the right thing and buzzed them and did not kill them.
