It might look wierd cuz your not used to seeing it. Now that it is officially authorized, it allows us who have served/are serving, to stand out in the crowd. I usually wear a hat outdoors but I had to report to my CO's office on a number of occasions, thus having to render the courtesy while inside and uncovered

I'll first have to assume that the 800 mph you refer to is Indicated/Calibrated airspeed. Depending on your altitude, 800 indicated is actually quite fast and at higher altitudes could be called extremely fast. My first guess would be that you have some kind of graphical glitch that is not showing your afterburner flame cuz I doubt that the F-16 could maintain that kind of speed without the afterburner. At high altitude, I am quite certain of it. More information would be needed for a better answer.

The Official Sept/Oct Patch Thread
Echarlie replied to Murphy'S's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
So far the fix that malibu43 pointed to has been working on all the planes that I have applied it to. At the moment im only working on the ETO American and German planes but their all working fine to this point. There may be hope after all. As far as the FM's go, I actually like the way the props fly now. They have a tighter feel to them, less manuverable, stalls seem more like the real thing. Stall recovery in a P-47 is pretty straight forward but takes some alt. But the FW's are a real b!tch (snap, spin, splat). Always before, the props just had a "wierd" feel to them. They seem alot better now. Anyway I am still testing but things are looking up at the moment. And Thanks for the help malibu43 -
The Official Sept/Oct Patch Thread
Echarlie replied to Murphy'S's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I have been testing out a WWII install of WOE with the new patch. I dont have WOI (yet) and have heard that there are problems with prop planes in that sim but never any specifics as to what the problems were. So of I went into the wild blue with my trusty P-47C to fly a CAP over London. First thing I notice is how solid and stable, almost heavy the plane feels (noticed the same thing with the jets) in flight. Leveling off at 10K I throttle back to let the rest of the flight catch up. After a few minutes I notice I am still alone. I hit F6 a couple of time to reveal that its just me and a single 109G off in the distance. Hmm...im supposed to be a flight of 4. anyway I attack the 109 only to find that my JUG doesnt turn nearly as well as it did prepatch and that stall behavior is downright deadly. As I stare at the smoking hole in the ground that used to be me and my stalled out P-47, I muse that all is as it should be cuz a low level TnB is no place for a JUG anyway. Then I ask myself, "where were all the other planes" The answer is a killer. Apperently the AI will not take off. they just drive around the airfield till they run into something or just sit on the taxiway refusing to taxi onto the runway. I have tested this in different aircraft and on different terrains. Always the same. For AI flights I guess the flight lead will take off but not the rest of the flight. Thats why I only see singletons as opposition. My preliminary conclusions are: Flight models seem improved if you like heavier feel and bigger turn radiaus. I think prepatch that the props were just a little too quick in the turns. (I never had any trouble dogfighting in a JUG before) Stall behavior still needs more study as accelerated stalls result is very quick loss of airspeed but my only test of that was in a JUG so it may not be so unreasonable. The AI refusing to take off is the real deal breaker here. Was this one of the known problems in WOI?? Are there others I should know about? Im gonna keep trying for now but it looks like the props are a no go in WOE as well. Any Thoughts? -

"Thud Ridge" and the follow on book "Going Downtown" Both are excellent reads if your into the airwar over North Vietnam. If your into the more technical side of things "Clashes. Air Combat over North Vietnam 1965-1972" By Marshall L Michel is a facinating study of the air to air war.

Falcon4/FalconAF are my first and one and only true love. SF/WoX are like the Hot Sexy girlfriend on the side that that gives you EVERYTHING you want. She may not have quite as much depth but she is alot of fun to PLAY with. -

Burning sands 1983 for woe
Echarlie replied to koushiro's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
Desert terrain works fine in WOE for me BUT......... I have both SFP1 and SFG. When I added the Desert terrain from one, It wouldnt show the carrier. So I switched it out with the terrain from the other and the carriers started working. Sorry I cant remember wich one I'm using now but I thought it was the one from SFP1. They were both patched up to the same level so I cant see that there would be any difference in them but that was the only change I made and the carriers started working. Do you have SF patched to the same level as WOE?? Also "Desert_Targets.ini" is the file I always worked with to get the carriers to working. I looked and couldnt find a "Terrain.ini" even when I looked in the "Desert.Cat" file. -

SAM map...
Echarlie replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I must confess I have cheated. Since I mostly fly air to air and dont like having to dodge multiple SAM's while trying to tangel with the mig17's, I have an edited version of the Targets.ini were I changed all the SAM batteries that appear before 1967 to AAA. (except those in Hanoi and Haiphong. I still have standards) Actually I dont think its cheating that much cuz the map is only 2/3 scale and the range of the SA-2 is still full scale, that makes the defences a bit more concentrated then maybe they should be. Also since each SAM batterie has 5 entries (4 launchers and the radar) I see ALOT more flak. Still VERY dangerous down low. And from what I understand, the SAM situation was not quite so bad in the early years 65-66. Come 1967 though and things really heat up. I did the same thing to the stock desert terrain but I changed ALL the SAM batteries to AAA. I call it "Fighter Town". It gives me a place to fly my own air superiority campains without having to deal so much with the air defences. EagleCharlie -
So what do you fly?
Echarlie replied to serverandenforcer's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Mostly F-4B/C Phantom is the reason I bought this series to begin with. Nothing like tryin to kill those twisting and turning Mig-17's with a 9B F-14 when I dont feel like takin on much of a challenge. F-15C When I feel like just flyin around an killin s**t. Although it is my alltime fav, its just a bit too easy. Just finished reading "Going Downtown" and "Thud Ridge" so im thinkin about puttin some time in the 105. EagleCharlie -
The first flight of the Eagle was in July 72, with Cat 1 CDT&E testing still to follow. I very much doubt that the Eagle was doing any actual head to head fly offs against anything let alone the Tomcat in 1972. As far as the Eagle flying apart at 8 G's goes, the last I heard the USAF had selected 178 "Golden Eagles" to be rebuilt and have the latest avionics upgrades at depot 2008-2010. They are then expected to soldier on untill 2025 to augment the F-22 force. THe rest of the fleet is to be retired. (Strike Eagles will also be flying of course) Too bad they couldnt (wouldnt) do that with the Super Tomcat. With such small numbers of the D that were built It wouldnt have cost that much. Then you Navy boys would actually have a plane that could compete with us. (duckin and coverin) ;-D EagleCharlie USAF

Something that always irked my soul. The Navy got great movies like "Top Gun" and "The Final Countdown" While my beloved USAF got the "Iron Eagle" series. Some of the worst movies ever made regardless of genre. And the biggest insult of them all.... Taking the grand old F-4 Phantom, painting a red star on her and calling her a MiG-29. (Iron Eagle II) BLASPHAMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What an insult to both the Phantom and to the Fulcrum. I walked out of that movie as soon as I saw that.

prolly not worth the effort cuz the graphics are so old. I still have it just so I can read the manuals.

Since the F-15C and the F-14 are my #1 and #2 favorite A/C of all time, I must say somthing here. Though I consider the Eagle number one I hardly ever fly it in sims while I fly the Tomcat very frequently. The reason? The eagle is just too easy. A 3 kill mission with the eagle is almost considered a failed mission, but I have to work (just a little) harder to get 3 with the Tomcat. Also theres that thing with gettin to land on a carrier. lotsa fun. As far as the Tomcat being represented in Hardcore flight sims, Anybody remember Microprose "Fleet Defender Gold"? I Would consider that pretty much a hardcore sim for its day. It had detailed cockpits and systems for both Pilot and RIO, Realistic missions,(CAP, Intercepts, Strike Escorts, Air Superiority) All flown from a carrier. I believe that when MP began work on Falcon 4.0 they started with Fleet Defender cuz there are quit a few similaritys, such as the way you controll your wingman and the padlock feature are pretty much the same in both sims. Heck, if someone was to do a remake of Fleet Defender bringing it up to modern PC standards, (Graphics, AI and a dynamic campain is all it really needs done) I can promise you I would never play anything else. I still have my old copy but the graphics are pre Falcon and the sound doesnt work on modern hardware. Anyway, if I had to do it for real and I had my choice, It would be EagleCharlie all the way.
