Yo, check this out! Great speed boost!

I don't have SF2 so I'm not sure but you may have the files in the wrong place. In SFP1 the .dll goes in the root directory while the ,ini goes in the flight directory. EDIT: By the way, this is the settings that I have found to give the best eye candy to performance ratio. It may be different for everyone else, but it's worth a shot. [EFFECT] EnableBloom=1 EnableOcclusion=0 EnableReflection=1 EnableMotionBlur=0 EnableWater=1 EnableShadow=1 DepthBias=0 I really didn't get much effect out of motion blur on this end, fps wise or visually. Ambient occlusion makes my aircraft translucent and kills my fps. the shadows work well, and the Bloom is the main feature here. I guess the other features will come into their own in later releases. -

I'm really not a fan of the Dogs. I tried the Kilo and it was ok. But I'm having more fun with my what if sabre. -

He means medium as in weight class. The Super bug isn't big, but it isn't small either. Larger aircraft tend to have more fuel, have more powerful engines, better avionics, and larger weapons loads. They also tend to be a country's more capable air superiority fighters. Something like an F-22 is big, fast and very good at shooting down other planes, and just that. Whereas the super bug is smaller, cheaper and good at all kinds of things. Therefore the big air superiority fighter will beat the middle weight in air superiority. -

Well I put together a personal what if "F-86G". It is an F-86F-40 airframe with a J73 engine and 20mm cannon. It can go super sonic in level flight but it takes awhile to get there. Just got back form flying my first sortie in the F-86G. The scorecard is as follows: Me: 3x MiG-19PFs 1x MiG-17F 2x MiG-15bis Wingman: 2x MiG-15bis 2x MiG17F Apparently the Sabre can out turn all three of those guys. I knew the Sabre, unlike most other cold war US aircraft was very maneuverable, but I didn't know it was that good. The MiG-15 is a joke against the G, and the 17 is equal fodder. His AB helped keep him alive a bit longer, but I overtook him after a few minutes. The 19 was another story. he had me beat on power as he was easily out running me. But I caught this flight close to home as the firts one decided to stay and fight the others fled. My wingman kept them busy as I took the first down in a rolling scissors. I went after the second and chased him through some mountains (this was Socal) He was faster but he kept trying to shake me with fancy tricks when just flooring it would have sufficed. His stupid antics let me catch up to him and he got an acute case of lead poisoning. The 3rd 19 was chasing me trying to save his buddy. I pulled an immelmann and got on his rear and then lit him up as he tried to climb away. -

That's the dog. I was referring to the "real" sabre. I'll try it out though. As for the MiG-23, I feel sorry for every pilot who had to get into one. Wiki's page for it quotes pilots speaking very positively of it. But even on good days I manage to survive in the MiG-23 where I thrive in just about everything else. -

Very true. I think that's the biggest reason the SF series doesn't have all of this. Thirdwire is essentially TK, and a few other people that he hires when he needs help. -

Megatextures would be cool. that's what Id does in their games. Of course that would require modeers to make huge single textures for an entire terrain. Satellite images would work well for that but may not be practical. I think he has a good point. For computers physics simulations are not hard work. 3d rendering is much higher on the difficulty scale for hardware. The engine doesn't take advantage of newer technologies, and because of that we get poor performance for meh graphics. Many old games are the same way. Just about every game I have that came out around the same time as SFP1 or before runs slow on my modern machine. The fact that for modern hardware the enbseries mod improves performance while improving graphics also supports the claim. For modern hardware of any type to emulate older hardware's routines that are not expressly supported by the new hardware, it takes a lot of computing power. Modern cards don't work the same way as old cards. In 2001 video cards were essentially several different hard units that handled different tasks and strapped together. Modern cards use a unified shader model where you have many stream processors which are jack of all trades, do the work. The enbseries mod lets the modern card with stream processors (geforce 8 series and newer, radeon hd2000 and newer) render the game the way they want to. This allows the graphics to improve and fps to sky rocket. Although the mod isn't perfect, (occlusion makes my aircraft transparent) it's a massive improvement. This, along with driver level AA and AF, something that SFP1 and just about every other game form that time don't support, allow us to get some pretty decent graphics. But these are all patch jobs. A game released in 2009 should have AA, AF, parallax mapping, ambient occlusion, soft shadows, HDR, bloom, and motion blur. That kind of thing is expected now. -

I think this .dll is taking advantage of a more efficient rendering method that may not have existed when the engine was first made. At least that explains why it works in 1st gen games. As for 2nd gen, they are supposed to be just recompiled and optimized for Vista and beyond so they may still have that same bottleneck in the rendering pipeline. At any rate I think its great that we can now play the games with max settings and with resonable performance. getting 50-60 fps is very nice indeed. -

I've gotten much better with the mirage but i wouldn't consider it my favorite. You would think a plane with such huge wings would have low wing loading and thus be very maneuverable, but it seems when you get into delta wings the opposite happens. I know why they chose delta, it makes things smooth at super sonic speeds, but those Israelis must have been great pilots to use it so well. -

For me viffing doesn't do much. It does push you up, but it wont give the sudden burst up as advertised. I don't like flying the early harriers. You will die. -

I like the F-86, you can take on MiG-15s and -17s pretty confidently. And if you have patience you can make use of the sidewinders. The one thing I think it could use is an after burner. The little engine makes it hard to catch MiG-17s when they light up and you don't want the other guy to disengage at will. I think it could also use 20mm cannon, but the Fury fixes that. -

Well I finally got it to work. Here are the results: My specs are Core 2 dou e7200 at 3.8ghz, 4gigs OCZ golds, Crossfire ATI radeon 4850s. Game is maxed except that shadows and mirrors are turned off. In catalyst I have AA and AF both maxed (16x), Catalyst A.I on advanced, Mipmap detail to high quality, and adaptive AA maxed also. I have to say I like it. It adds a level of grittiness to it and not only lightens what should be light, but it darkens what should be dark. -

That's not rippling, that's aliasing. Turn on Anti-aliasing and Antroscopic filtering in catalyst control center if you have an ati card or in the Nvidia panel if you have an nvidia card. -

well disabling motion blur doesn't so it so it isn't motion blur. I'll fiddle around with settings and see what happens. -

The avhistory FMs are a major improvement but they aren't eprfect. The aircraft in general are more sluggish than in '06 and they still handle funny. For example the P-51 can't fly level. It always has slight down trim. -
I know the Mirage III is supposed to be a great dog fighter. It won many wars and has shot down more than its fair share of air craft. But how do you do it? It doesn't maneuver very well, it's speed is average and you can only carry 2 heaters and one radar. I've been able to get moderate sucess with it, but this is mainly due to good luck and not skill with the Mirage. What do you guys think? How do I make this girl dance?

Mirage tactics
zmatt replied to zmatt's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'm much better at deflection shooting in props than jets. It probably has something to do with more guns = more lead = I don't have to be as good a shot. But I am getting the hang of the mirage now. I can see that in the right hands it can be very deadly. The MiG-19 is a pretty tough opponent in TW games, but I just at a flight of them for breakfast.
