Mirage tactics
zmatt replied to zmatt's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Ah thanks, just what I was looking for. But how do you hit them if you have more speed? When I have the speed advantage I always blast past the guy before I can hit him. This is coming form a guy who is used to maneuver fighting, not power fighting if it helps. I just ran a mission with the CJ. 1970 solcal map. We intercepted some MiG-19's. I took your advice and it worked magnificently. Above 400 knot IAS and with the rudder trick I can out turn a Farmer! I was able to put all 3 of my missiles on target and even bagged me a guns kill. All in all it was a good day. -

Yeah they are doing a lot of good work over there. There is also a lot of renewed interest here too. -

I don't have WoI, this is WoE with the MF mirages. More specifically the CJ and the E. -

Yeah my bad, I should have been more specific. The good news is, progress is being made. Maybe a peep at the A-1 in SF2 will give us some much needed info. -

What I mean is, when we have converted enough of the existing prop mods (p-51, bf109 etc) over to SF2 to have a decent WW2 campaign. -

Ok, if we can't change the node names than can we make our own models and have the same texture mapping for compatibility? -

I'll make the full switch once we have sufficient prop head support in SF2. -

Can you change the object mapping names with a hex editor or is that a bad idea? -
Good point. They still called it a predator though. Even if it is an avenger that much still annoys me. The were also able to stick in swine flu and obama so they did have time to go back and change other things.
-
I know what the avenger looks like. It's not an avenger. The avenger has an internal weapons bay and these had pylons. They defiantly made a 3d model of a predator or reaper and substituted a jet engine. The things looked like they had the read ends of global hawks albeit with afterburners. And the liberal use of Air Force stock footage with training ordinance was nice. Man those F-22's got to Giza pretty fast...... Anyways I did enjoy it, but I guess I just look for a bit more depth/seriousness in my action films. And I didn't mean to drag it down in to nitpicking technical stuff. But I enjoy laughing at such things.

Well i just saw it today. Went with my jarhead cousin. Like all Micheal Bay movies it is basically high budget explosions. The acting was ok, but the story was kinda hard to swallow and some of the stuff was outright chessey. I like how in the end the Jordanians and Egyptians let us basically invade their countries and destroy their landmarks in a matter of minutes. The afterburner equipped reaper (they called them predators of course) were funny and the stylized railgun was cool. If you want to see a bunch of explosions and product placement go ahead and see it. If you want to see a good story unfold then look elsewhere.

I always thought that was weird too, but i just did some reading, and it turns out that in the late 80's he was diagnosed with Lupus and some weird skin disorder that screw up the pigmentation of your skin. Looks like he bleached his skin to cover it up. Apparently he was also anorexic and had a very skewed view of how people saw him. Dunno what cause that but there could be many reasons. I feel a bit sorrow for him now.

Prop-Head Modding and 3d Discussion

The -B is ok, but some later models P-40s would be nice too. Especially the E, that's the "iconic" P-40. -

A little SF2 WW2 project of mine
zmatt replied to pcpilot's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Agreed. I am pretty comfortable with where my WW2 install is. I have most things the way I like them and to change now would be to undo a few months worth of tedious work. -

Well Mako69 inspired me to sup-up a scooter. So I chose the A-4AR. After upping the engine I realized that it suffered form the same issues that many of my up-engined hack jobs did. The control surfaces simply didn't provide enough power to maneuver satisfactorily at speed. The ailerons were fine, for the fighting hawk it was the elevators that were giving me trouble. So I increased the max deflection values both ways and this is what I got; It might be a bit hard to see, but I am actually doing a loop backwards, by nosing down instead of pulling up. I got to the top and stalled. If the engine had a bit more power it would be possible. You can also see that I am performing a high speed turn, also nosing down instead of pulling back. I don't know how difficult these are to really do, but they are manuvers that I wouldn't normally try in an unmodded aircraft. -
SF2E Cant get Harriers to VTO
zmatt replied to Hokum's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Wow your a wealth of information. Anything that can be done to make the Harriers better is a good idea in my book. I was a little disappointed to find that you couldn't VTOL unless you completely unloaded the plane in game. I wondered what that point of a jump jet was. -
F/a-18 avionics, question for modders
zmatt replied to ArturR's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Something that I always noticed was how the values didn't quite sit right in those boxes. Can that be fixed or is the .ini not precise enough to line them up? -

I would hate to be the guy who has to paint that one on. -

Exact modeling
zmatt replied to Epizikl's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
That's not what I meant. It has to do with the image quality. With 3d renders it always looks like its in a showroom or in a movie. Neither of which are indicative of what you normally see. The model and textures need to be high quality, but the rendering techniques have a long way to go until they look real. Right now all 3d models look manufactured and sterile without serious post production work. To be fair a lot of what I am asking is very expensive resource wise and isn't very practical. Hopefully we aren't too far off though to where such things are possible in real time. -
Exact modeling
zmatt replied to Epizikl's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Nice 3d models but I never once thought they were real. They are however far superior to most 3d you see. Here is the issue with 3d in general: Good 3d modeling looks too real. You don't see all of those details in a real photo, things are out of focus, the image is washed out etc. Also, it's rare to see the heat off of a tailpipe in a photograph. -

That is great to hear. It seems that half of the WW2 mods made are off limits, and most of the rest is out of date. So there is much work to be done. -
