Freakin' SA-8's
Stingray72 replied to malibu43's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Not sure if anyone found anything, but I just read "Palace Cobra", a book by Ed Rasimus, an F-105 and F-4 driver who flew over 250 combat missions over North vietnam. He outlines the details of the SA-8 pretty well in one section of the book. I am not sure what to compare it to because I am not that into the little ins and outs of of all this sort of stuff, more of a hobbyist. Hope it helps a little!! ~Tax -
Hey guys!! I am a die hard IL2 guy, but my old computer crapped out and my new one runs Vista and am waiting for help to get on HL. In the mean time, sinceI was bored with single mission on that, I wanted to give WOV another try. My questions are pretty simple, er, hopefully. How the heck do I get the Shrikes to work?? The only way thatI can employ it is to pretty much shotgun into the target, which is pretty unsat when there is heavy AAA around the radar I am trying to kill. Can someone please fill me in on the secret/majic trick that makes this system work? I downloaded the F-105G mod and really want to get some Iron Hand missions in for that and the A-6. Speaking of, is there a campaign for either? The other one is that I downloaded the Top gun campiagn on here. It looked pretty sweet, so I dropped the contents into my campaign folder. I wish I could find it lol, because when I open the drop the campaign drop down menu it isn't there. Will someone please give me the potion to fix that too? Thanks all!! ~11th~Taxman

Shrike help
Stingray72 replied to Stingray72's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Thanks Dave, I just tried the patch and it crashed again when I tried to start the mission. I am going to give one more stab and do it from the top and see what happens. I had a crash issues before on my XP machine; it worked through two patches but when I tried the third update it crashed with the same message. On the campaign, yeah. It's like skins and planes, some are easy as drag n drop, others are programmer knowledge base type stuff. Very frustrating how this game works. LOMAC is not really any better with a worse plane set. I wonder if SF2: Vietnam is better? All I know is that my peeps are starting to get into jets on IL2, running a Korean campaign. Maybe someone will start moddind Vietnam era planes on that engine too. One can hope..... Taxman -
Shrike help
Stingray72 replied to Stingray72's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I dug further this morning and discovered I had patched in the worng order. I did see thatI can just use the Oct 2008b patch over my un-patched game, i think v09.something.04 or the likes. It was crasing right to desktop and could not find the dll. file when I tried to patch. Any thoughts on the campaign? Can someone give me specifics on putting a campaign in? What about my flare/chaff issue? And thanks for the help on the Shrikes. I tested all of your ideas and came up ith a method that owrks for me. I pretty much point the plane at the source of signal, pick the nose up a little and pull the trigger. If I am not too far away then I get hits. I think my problem before was that had been taking shots from outside the range of the weapon. That combined with not understanding that it didn't track it on the plane's radar made me think it was defective. -
Shrike help
Stingray72 replied to Stingray72's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Yeah, I would agree with that last statement, although I knew a guy who flew reccce F-4's in Vietnam, he was pretty scary. He was constantly looking around, and he had huge pupils, like a snake. This guy had helped test an ejection seat once on a drag racing boat, as in the boat was going to flip and he used it. the man was scared of nothing. Anyways, I have had some success with the Shrikes and ARMs using them the way described, I didn't know that there was no way to get them to track a target from the cokcpit. I am all over it now, and am going to spend the morning testing it. The chaff, flares, and ECM pods seem like a good idea, and now that brings another question, where's the loadout for those? I looked and can't find it, and my planes aren't default loading them. The campaign problem is simply that I put a campaign in the campaign folder and it doesn't show up in the dropdown menu box where it should be. I would have figured it would be there, but nope lol, just the three default ones. The one I donloaded is the Top Gun campaign I got from here, if you wanted to test it. Also, I am running an un-patched version as I have Vista and it won't run with patches installed. ~Tax -
LOMAC SKins and other items
Stingray72 posted a topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Hi All!! I have been playing IL2 for years and my squad is trying to get us off the ground on LOMAC now here pretty quick. I am trying to install skins for the game, and I saw a post saying use the ModMan, whatever that is. Can someone please give me detailed instructions on how to change these? I found a great one for the A-10 starring the boys from my home state of MD and I want to use it!! Also, after I get the skins in the folder, how do I pick the skin in game? I didn't see the option anywhere, although it couldbe that I just don't know what to look for. I am running the stock install, and my copy is from when the game first came out. What do I need to do for downloads to update my stuff? Please someone help me so I can get caught up with everyone else!!!! ~S 11th_AF_Taxman Training Officer, 11th VAF -
11th VAF, the Aleutian Tigers, is looking for you!
Stingray72 posted a topic in Virtual Squadron Chat
Hi All!! The 11th VAf is recruiting. We are a small, fairly new squad commemorating the little known campaign fought on American soil in Alaska during WWII. We fly only American planes online, with our main planes being those of the Aleutian Tigers and sister squadrons: The venerable P-40 and also the P-38 and P-39. We have expanded to incluse other squadrons that fought the Japanese in the Pacific and fly bombers as well. If interested in flying underdog aircraft to success against better planes through superior tactics and training, then please contact me via email and register on our website, the home of the Aleutian Tigers: www.flybsog.com See you in the skies and beware the P-40....... ~11th_AF_Taxman, Training Officer, 11th VAF 11th_AF_Taxman@flybsog.com
