  1. Rise of Flight review on SimHQ Forum

This looks absolutely fabulous - a WW1 flight-sim fans dream come true. I so hope this doesn't crash and burn!
  2. The Rocketeer

Jennifer Connely. That's all that needs to be said.
  3. If so, what did you think? Is there more in there than just more airplanes to fly? All comments welcome.
  4. Game distribution through Steam

No, it is not. Steam is notorious for their poor to non-existent customer service and their lack of disclosure. Also, they make you connect to their server to play single-player games. Yes, they claim you can play in 'offline' mode, but I have read DOZENS of posts from people who said that works sporatically at best. Read their EULA. Basically they can do whatever they want and you have no rights whatsoever. It's not a business plan I will have any part of, although many people have no problems with it. I have both practical and conceptual problems with what they are doing. PS: Why are you posting this in the 'Jet Thunder' forum. I would think this belongs in the Pub.
  5. Ack. My new F16 Combatstick/Pro-throttle/Pro-pedals combination is fabulous. But in First Eagles (the game I mostly bought them for) the throttle only goes from about 0 - 85%. Any suggestions? I didnt' see anything in the sim that would allow me to modify the throttle settings. I've attached my CH map, it's fairly bare-bones, but other than the throttle problem it seems to work fine. PS: I just tried to upload the map and the message says, 'Upload failed. You are not permited to upload this type of file'. So I zipped it and that worked. new.zip
  6. I figured this out about 10:30 last night. The problem was the 'calibrate' button in the CH control manager was greyed out and I couldn't recalibrate my throttle. It turns out there are three buttons, 'off', 'map', and 'direct', and you have to be in the right mode to see the devices in your calibrate menu. I recalibrated and now I'm 1 - 100%. Close enough. Damn, this is a great sim! And the combination with the CH stuff is fabulous.
  7. I've created a map with everything all in 1 device, but FE does not recognize it. I've looked for other Third Wire maps and can't find any that are current with the CH software. Any suggestions? This is driving me nuts.
  8. Ok, so I've never flown a real biplane. So shoot me. But here's my dumb question....when you apply left rudder your rudder actually moves to the right, yes? And your plane turns right? Left rudder, turn right. Or am I backwards?
  9. I just replaced my 8800 gts with a the latest wonder-boy, the 285. My 3dmark score went up 25% and my aquamark3 score went DOWN. Those are really old benchmarks, I wish there was a good standard one that didn't require Vista. I'm really thinking of sending this puppy back.
  10. I'm not sure how, but I got it working. Funny, I went into WOI and it found the HOTAS fine. Then I went back to FE and it found it as well. Now if I can just get the throttle working properly.... (new post).
  11. This is the best looking sim I think I've ever seen: http://riseofflight.com/blogs.aspx?lang=en-US I hope they actually finish it someday. This looks amazing.
  12. dumb rudder question

I'm apparently not the only one confused by this. In IL-2 when I apply left rudder, I turn right. In First Eagles when I apply left rudder I turn left.
  13. I'll tell you this, it's one LOOOOONG son of a bitch. No way this will fit into the new case I was planning on building, I'll have to keep my old Antec P180. Anyone want a brand new Antec Solo with two custom fans that has never been used, still in the box? Half price.
  14. I just got a dvd of IL-2 1946 from Amazon.com. In the slim-box is the dvd... nothing else. No manual. No keyboard card, no NUTHIN. Is this normal? Or do I have a bootleg or something else weird here? The case says 'Made in Europe' on the back.
  15. I'm trying this, but no luck so far. I change my conf.ini to look like this: [il2] title=Il2-Sturmovik Forgotten Battles hotkeys=HotKey game [window] width=1680 height=1050 ColourBits=32 DepthBits=24 StencilBits=8 ChangeScreenRes=1 FullScreen=1 DrawIfNotFocused=0 EnableResize=0 EnableClose=1 SaveAspect=1 Use3Renders=0 But it doesn't seem to have any effect. When I go into options, I don't see 1680x1050. And when I exit the game and look at the conf.ini file, it's back to 1280x960. Any advice here to get this in 1680x1050? thanks
  16. Oops

  17. No quick-start, no nothing. Hmmm. I also was surprised to see this sim doesn't support 1680x1050.
  18. Don't things ever change? I remember over ten years ago waiting for 'Aces Over Europe'. When it came out the AI aces could do things like hover, fly backwards, and they NEVER shot unless they were guaranteed a hit. It sucked. IL-2 has the same problem after seven years of new versions and patches? I played IL-2 for a short while years ago and remember AI planes out-climbing and out-turning me that SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO IT. So I quit. I just bought 1946. Maybe I shouldn't have bothered.
  19. I'm putting in a new videocard this afternoon (if UPS doesn't screw up) and wanted to run some before & after benchmarks. What's the best program for that? I see 3dmark is Vista only these days and I'm XP. Any suggestions? thanks.
  20. Are flight sims going out of style?

When you've got three hundred dollars in HOTAS for the PC it's hard to consider playing a console sim. That said, I'm VERY interested in seeing the IL2 console game, just to see what happens to it in the market.
  21. Are flight sims going out of style?

Amen, brother. I spent 40 bucks with third wire just last month. You've got to support the people who deserve it. I have hopes for 'Rise of Flight', I'm a huge WWI sim fan. 'Jet Thunder' has possibilities. The new Battle of Britain sim from the IL-2 people might be nice if it EVER GETS HERE. I think the sim companies killed themselves. Poor project management, feature creep, poor quality control. I would much rather have a smaller, but less buggy sim, but that's rarely what we get. And the hardcore stuff insanely hard. The one half of one percent of the market scream about little things, but your average 'guy' thinks something like Falcon 4 is insane (I agree with that). Remember Falcon 3? You could hop into 'instant combat' and fly around and have a blast. F4, hop into 'instant combat' and you're dead in about three minutes. With the LOMAC people (DCS) sticking with starforce that's one whole product line I will never buy. Damn.
  22. About Damn Time!

10 and 11 years in prison for what should be, at worst, an administrative offense? Remind me to not get on your bad side.
  23. Back in the day I was a CH guy and loved their stuff. I recently re-upped and went Saitek, X52 pro. I'm thinking of adding pedals and am wondering if I should return my Saitek and go CH again. On the negative side, the CH stuff is large and somewhat cumbersome and Requires 3 usb plugs. The Saitek seems nice, but not as sturdy as the CH. I've not seen the Saitek pedals and have read lots of user-reviews that are less than complimentary. As I recall the CH software was really nice. I'm less than impressed with Saiteks profile-controller, but I guess it's ok. Price is similar - $250 vs $300 (Amazon.com). One thing about CH is you buy their stuff and they'll take care of you forever. They really support their products and customers. Has anyone here used both? I'd be very interested in any comments.
  24. I sent back the Saitek. It was nice enough gear. But I really like the CH throttle. Four hats in very easy to use positions vs. one hat on the Saitek. The Ch gear is smoother and the quality of the switches is way, way better. I didn't want to spend another hundred on the Saitek pedals and then have $250 in that stuff. It's too much investment in a company that does not begin to offer the support and service that CH does.
