A Duel in the Sun: Nels Alberts meets Friedrich Kempf
RAF_Louvert replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Thanks Hauksbee, glad you enjoyed it. I intentionally had it start quietly before jumping into the combat as that is how it feels when I fly for what seems like an eternity in prelude to the brief but intense battle, (which in and of itself can feel like an eternity as well, but for a different reason). I actually filmed the same basic dogfight four times from different viewpoints, and shot some extra bits of footage I needed for a few of the segues. And I'm rather fond of the distant shots myself. Cheers! Lou -
Did you have a ww1 pilot in your family ?
RAF_Louvert replied to Red-Dog's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
This is really an OUTSTANDING thread! So much history, related to so many people. Cheers! Lou -
Yuppers, I've been shot by my own wingies on more than one occasion carrick58. It's usually best just to keep out of their way when they get the blood lust in 'em. Cheers! Lou

Bullethead, I've also had an occasion where I was able to "surprise" the AI enemy. In my current campaign as Cedric Nelson flying the DH2 with 29 RFC, my two wingmen and I were able to come up through the clouds and attack four EIII's from below. It was really very exciting as I kept waiting at every moment for the Hun to break and dive down on us. But they kept winging along in their nice little formation as we crept up through the mist right under the trailing plane's tail feathers, at which point I signalled the attack and sent a stream of bullets into the last Einie. Pieces went flying and he began smoking and dove away, while the other three continued on straight for another 5 seconds or so before finally scattering and turning to fight. We mananged to send two more down out of control before losing sight of the fourth EA. Toasts were made round the dinner table that night I can tell you. Cheers! Lou

DING DING DING !!! WILD CARD PHOTO ! The first to correctly identify the aircraft shown, the year it was built, and why it was ultimately not put into full production for war service will be awarded 2 bonus points. You must be spot on with all answers to win. Good Luck! . -

Very good Red-Dog! It is a Belgian Nieuport 23, belonging to 1 ére, and by the cowling appears to be an early version. The N23 is one of my favorite Entente fighters; agile, quick, and unlike the Camel, forgiving. Here are the contest standings after photo set 10: Olham, 24 points Dej, 19 points Red-Dog, 18 points Rickitycrate, 16 points Bullethead, 5 points Duce Lewis, 5 points Luftace, 5 points Burning Beard, 4 points Check Six, 2 points rhythalion, 2 points JohnGresham, 1 point Shrikehawk, 1 point TonyO, 1 point zoomzoom, 1 point Cheers! Need some tips on the Camel
RAF_Louvert replied to Firecage's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Firecage, the Camel is one of the few planes in OFF that you can consistently do a modern-day Immelamnn turn with, (in lieu of the historic Immelmann which is more of a hammerhead or wingover). Put her into a shallow dive and get your air speed up to 120, pull GENTLY back on the stick, and just before you go fully inverted do an aileron roll to port as you push slightly forward on the stick. You will need to keep just the smallest bit of starboard rudder throughout the maneuver. Also, if you have not already sorted it out, the Camel truly despises a ham-fisted pilot. Fly her as if you were waltzing with a beautiful lady who is allowing you the privilage of leading her around the ballroom and you will do fine. Try to manhandle her and she will slap you down so fast you won't know which end is up...literally. Cheers! Lou -
Wow! Great website. Thanks for sharing, cptroyce. Cheers! Lou

Inspired by Bullethead's tattered, torn, and re-repaired Fe2b, I finished up one of my own. "Patches" has served faithfully throughout the numerous Somme battles, and continues to fly and flaunt it's stuff, despite Fritzie's best efforts. I also posted the following link just a bit ago in the General Forum as well. It is a brief video of the old bird winging it's way yet again over the lines: PATCHES Cheers! Lou -

Problem with A / 1st Flight's Orders
RAF_Louvert replied to Bullethead's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I've noticed the same thing since the latest patches as well, but for me it has been a non-issue as I've never relied on the other flights in my campaigns. In the past I've found them to be more of a detriment when they come streaking in, vulching kills, and scattering the EA to the four corners of the Earth. I prefer working with my flight and attacking the EA from the top down, pushing them towards the ground, and keeping them better in check. Just my personal style I suppose. Cheers! Lou -
Subdividing the Skins Database

I also voted for specific aircraft name/type, and if then further ID'd by ace/jasta/squadron/esc that would be ideal. Cheers! Lou -
O.T. Sir Hugh Dowding was the "Starched Shirt"?
RAF_Louvert replied to DukeIronHand's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Yuppers, I am about 100% sure that Dowding was indeed the "Starched Shirt". Great book, BTW. One of the best of the genre, and one of my personal favs. Cheers! Lou -

RAF_Louvert replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Dej, that is your choice Sir, and very sporting of you. Best of luck with your next try. Burning Beard, I'm sorry but #38 is not the Nieuport 17. Great info on your guess though Sir. Rickitycrate, well done, #37 is the Fokker D.V, and the example shown was in service with Jasta 5. Two more points for you Sir. Also, for folks in the know about Jasta 5, those are Ltn's Bäumer and von Hippel leaning against the wing of the plane. Cheers! Lou -

RAF_Louvert replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
In this case, since both of you gave the same correct answer within a minute of each other, Dej is free to go for one of the two remaining planes. If however Dej's answer had been incorrect I would have said no. So, two more points to you Olham, and Dej, you are free to try again on this set. BTW, great info from both of you on the Phonix D.III. I thought you might get tripped up on this one, but you're too sharp for that. Cheers! Lou -
So..you have a fighter pilot's reactions huh?
RAF_Louvert replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
It took me four days to even find this thread, so my odds of placing anywhere on the board at all are probably nil. Good thing I gravitate more towards the B/R planes. Cheers! Lou -

Outstanding Red-Dog! It is the HP 0/100 as evidenced by the larger engine nacelles housing the fuel tanks. I don't think this was the particular craft that fell into German hands, but it was one like it. Great info Sir. And just as a reminder to all, please remember to note your sources. Two more point for you Red-Dog. Cheers! Lou -

Like the prodigal son, I have returned. I ended up with a few more stops along the way than originally intended so I did not make it home until last night. Did have the excitement yesterday of seeing a full grown, full antlered bull moose meandering along the edge of a small rural road as I was coming back through North Dakota. Pulled over and just watched him for a while as he worked his way across the bogs in the low mist that hung in the cool, early morning air. An impressive and inspiring sight. I will be posting the next set of photos in several hours, so be on the look-out. Cheers! Lou
