  1. Problems with OFF

Random CTD's may be the hardest glitch in OFF to track down, IMO. When I first bought OFF, I also had random CTD's--usually in the middle of a mission--but sometimes after going to the debrief screen, as in your case. Although the CTD's eventually went away, I could not trace it to anything specific I had done to my computer. My best guess is that my computer was overclocked a bit too much, along with the PCI settings in my BIOS. My video card may also be to blame, as it only has 256 MB of memory. You might also try backing off a little on your graphics settings. In regard to the wingman AI, most players prefer to fly as "always lead" because the decision making of the AI squad leaders is questionable, to say the least. Fortunately, the AI are much better followers than leaders. And don't worry about answering your own posts. We are all fairly informal around here and not stuffy about "thread etiquette," etc. Most of us are pretty nice, too, with the exception of UncleAl , and you've already met him!
  2. Damage Model Discussion--HPW Campaign DM released!

Quite. Thank you very much. No effect, huh! Hmmm. How many frontal attacks? What was your hit percentage? Did the aircraft seem to slow down or lose any of its maneuverability? Wow, that's a lot of shots into the wings. How many were aimed at the wing roots? That seems to be the critical area where the wings on the standard DM appear to be the weakest. I'm also curious about the seeming lack of smoke from the oil and coolant reservoirs. Did you see any damage to those areas? Thanks again for your help!
  3. The Lone Wolf

You wrote that yourself? You are a man of many talents, Olham! When I first saw your post, I assumed you were translating another person's poem. Looking back, I see that it is your own work. Consider me impressed! More, please!
  4. Will my system be able to run OFF...

Jammer is also an excellent graphics guy and OFF video director.
  5. throttle problems

Well, short of pulling an Uncleal and telling you read the Sticky threads, my GUESS is that you have not selected "mine" in your configuration settings. Start the game and press Escape key (assuming your Escape key works). Click on Controls, which should open up a configuration box for your joystick and keyboard settings. Near the top you should see a box labeled "configuration." Make sure your configuration is set to "mine." If it is set to "mine" than the only solution I am afraid is for you to read the Sticky threads.
  6. throttle problems

If you are running XP, open up Control Panel and click on Game Controllers. Your stick should be listed there. Click on the Properties tab to calibrate.
  7. Damage Model Discussion--HPW Campaign DM released!

Help! I'm afraid I need some assistance in testing my QC DM. Right now I am trying to determine if I have set the proper wing strength for the Bristol Fighters. Trouble is, I can't get close enough or do enough damage to the bloody things before they blow ME out of the sky! Damned English craftsmanship! This makes it very difficult to assess their damage model. Is there anyone daring or foolish enough to test my damage model in QC against these battle tanks of the sky? Any help would most certainly be appreciated, as I may never finish my DM mod at this pace! Now excuse me as I go off muttering to myself....
  8. Olham, I'm pretty sure you are flying with the standard OFF damage model. I don't have a campaign DM released for the new planes in HITR yet.
  9. Good morning/day/evening everyone! (OFFers are everywhere, you know) After it is officially approved by the combat ace moderators, v1.0 of HPW's Vertical Stabilizer Fix for HITR will be made available in the downloads section. This mod repairs a few very minor errors in the stock HITR .xdp files for the Bristol Scout, the DFW CV, and the Nieuport 24, Nieuport 24 Lewis, and the Nieuport 28. Please see the readme for details, but for now, the mod simply adds threshold values for vertical stabilizers to the Scout and DFW, and removes them from the three Nieuports to make them consistent with the Nieuports already in the game. The mod does not change in any way the physical model of the planes, just the values of the vertical stabilizers in the .xdp files. Please note that the mod is only for use with stock installations of the HITR expansion and with no other version of BHaH. I will release a mod with these fixes to go with my alternate HITR DM in a week or so. I hope you enjoy the mod. Please report any problems to me and not to OBD Software. Thank you.

  11. File Name: HPW Vertical Stabilizer Fix for HITR 1.0 File Submitter: Herr Prop-Wasche File Submitted: 19 Mar 2010 File Category: Aircraft Models Hey guys and gal(s): This mod corrects a few minor oversights in the .xdp files for a couple of old and new aircraft in the HITR expansion pack from OBD Software. As such, this mod is meant to be used on stock installations of the HITR expansion only, and on no other version of the game. Over the weekend I will release an update of my QC DM which will also contain the fixes contained in this mod. From the readme: Click here to download this file
  12. HPW_HITR_DM_1.1

File Name: HPW_HITR_DM_1.1 File Submitter: Herr Prop-Wasche File Submitted: 08 Mar 2010 File Updated: 08 Mar 2010 File Category: Aircraft Models H.P.W. QC Damage Model for OFF BHaH HITR v1.1 Beta by Herr Prop Wasche Zip file contents: aircraft folder with 47 .xdp files HITR_xdp_Backup.bat Restore_HITR_DM.bat HPW_HITR_DM_1.1_ReadMe.txt Thank you for downloading version 1.0 of my QC damage model for Hat in the Ring, the fantastic extension to Between Heaven and Hell, the already wonderful WWI flight sim modification of CFS3 by OBD Software. Like my previous damage mods, this mod is intended to enhance some of the visual damage effects already in the game. Depending upon the aircraft and the severity of the damage, aircraft should now be more likely to display not only bullet holes, but also rips and tears, oil and coolant leaks, exposed wing spars, and broken wing tips. Although entire wings may still break off at the root, the mod is intended to slightly reduce the frequency of this event. In addition, while all of the aircraft engines in the game have been made slightly more resistant to early damage, when severely damaged they are somewhat more likely to catch on fire and even explode! Finally, both your pilot and your AI opponent are slightly more vulnerable to becoming wounded--perhaps fatally! Although I have worked for a long time implementing and testing these changes and am very proud of the results, keep in mind that this release is only a BETA. Therefore, kindly report any strange behavior or unusual results that you may come across. I am particularly interested in the behavior of the new planes introduced in the HITR expansion, as well as the behavior of the Nieuport and Albatros series of aircraft. You should quickly notice that these planes do not perform quite like you are used to seeing them perform with the standard damage model. Lastly, I would again like to express my thanks and appreciation to OBD Software for their help and encouragement in the making of this damage mod. Of course, with the exception of the minor tweaks contained in this damage model, all work remains the sole work and property of OBD Software. If you have any questions or experience any problems with the installation of this mod, you can reach me at www.combatace.com at the Over Flanders Field forum. Thank you and I hope you enjoy the mod! INSTALLATION: Important! Backup your HITR .xdp files first! Backup your HITR .xdp files by first copying the HITR_xdp_Backup.bat file to your OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields folder and then clicking on it to run the program. After you have backed up your .xdp files, extract the entire contents of the HPW_HITR_DM_1.1.zip file to the OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields folder. DO NOT unzip the file into the aircraft folder itself! If prompted, simply click "Yes to all" when asked if you wish to replace files. If at any time you wish to return to the stock HITR damage model (for either campaign or MP use), simply click the Restore_HITR_DM.bat file included in the zip file and automatically placed in your OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields folder. In order to re-apply the mod, simply re-open the HPW_HITR_DM_1.1.zip file and extract the aircraft folder to the OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields folder. NOTE: This mod is currently intended to be used in QC battles ONLY. If you use the mod in the campaign, only YOUR plane will have the modified damage model. All AI aircraft will still be using the stock damage model. A damage model for all of the airplanes in the campaign will be released (hopefully) in the very near future. 13. HPW_HITR_DM_1.1

Hi Morris. Still working on it. I'm still tweaking some aircraft and making some small changes in others. For instance, I found the Spad XIII's wings to still be too weak and so have strengthened them a bit. I will probably add an update to the QC mod first and then get around to releasing a campaign version in another week or so. Of course, you can help out by d/l my QC version first and letting me know what you think of it and if you find any problems--hint, hint! HPW

  15. Imaginary Grief

To more accurately simulate reality, on occasion we should fly the campaign when hung-over, or just after a fight or break-up with a loved one, as I'm sure happened in real life with the actual pilots. Speaking of which, do any of you role-play as if you are angry or in mourning about the death of a wingman or close personal friend stuck in the trenches? I imagine the good pilots managed to maintain a fairly level head about them at all times, whereas the lesser pilots may have let their feelings get the best of them--for better or worse.
  16. Thanks for the warning. I wonder if setting the priority to high or above normal instead of realtime might work without messing up your soundfiles or other tweaks?
  17. Flying the "new" SPAD XIII

And always keep your eye on the speed dial! Never let it get below 90 mph in a turn or you are in trouble.
  18. Flying the "new" SPAD XIII

Lately I've been test flying the Spad for my DM, so I thought I'd pop in and give my observations about the current FM of the Spad XIII.... I agree with almost all of the above comments about the "new" flight model. With the old FM, flying the Spad was no fun at all for me. Previously, I could barely make a 30 degree banked turn without getting into a vicious stall. Combined with its high stall speed, I couldn't even stay in the air. Now, with the reduced stall speed, even 45 degree or more turns are possible as long as you keep the turn short. You still have to keep constant watch on your air speed, however. Just as the Spad rapidly gains speed in a dive, it loses speed very fast in any kind of a tight turn. I've found that another key to flying the Spad is to use only a little rudder while in the turn. Too much and you corkscrew into a spin. Fortunately, the spin is much less vicious than before, and you can easily recover as long as you have enough height so you can regain your air speed. OTOH, applying just a little rudder in the direction of your turn can also help you to gain precious air speed if you feel you are in danger of stalling. Actually, my favorite way to quickly turn a Spad is to roll over into a wing-over and reverse direction, cutting far inside the turn of the opposing aircraft. This often puts you on the enemy's tail in fairly short order because of your superior climb rate and speed. With the old FM, I couldn't even stay in the air. Now, I am able to engage in dogfights and even win on occasion. Me likey!

  24. Damage Model Discussion--HPW Campaign DM released!

Good news! I have just uploaded the mod and it should be available on the 3rd party download forum in a few hours. Keep in mind that the mod is currently designed for QC battles only and is still only a BETA. I hope to have a campaign version soon, but only after I get some feedback regarding the QC mod. NOTICE: MOD TEMPORARILY WITHDRAWN DUE TO FAILURE TO INCLUDE FILE TO BACKUP ORIGINAL DM FILES! I hope to have a corrected mod available later today or tomorrow. My apologies to anyone who may have already installed the mod.
