  1. I honestly don't see where a SS HD would make any difference. I have WD 10K Raptor HD paired with a I7-930 OC'd to 3.8 GHz in tandem with 6 GB of RAM running at 1600 MHz and a pair of Evga GTX 260-216 Super Clocked GPU's (896MB of video ram) and I would think these specs would be more than ample to handle whatever gets thrown at my display. The fact the tearing only occurs in OFF - as with most others here leads me to believe it is a rendering coding issue IMO with the OFF overlay of CFS3.
  2. I just bought, downloaded and installed HITR (successfully). Like all game patches this size I back them up on a CD - but while the direct downloaded HITR executable runs ok, when I test the CD backup it stalls (burned 2 discs to make sure it wasn't a disk problem) and won't run. Thus my question - is the HITR download copy protected? I'm using W7 x64 default burn software.
  3. Thank you for taking time to reply. As I later posted in this thread my problem was "operator error" ..... My bad.... and I have it backed up on my flash drive.
  4. Just to mention, I've been registered (forum) since March '09 so I'm no stranger to OFF and the forum FAQ, stickys, etc. But I'm what you'd call a casual flight simmer and not a regular in the sense that you and other folks here are with plus 600 posts. My most recent postings had to do with TrackIR5 which I've had now for about 3 weeks - and still getting used to because of my trifocals and vision correction prescription strength. Off hand I'd say most of my posts have been the result of a problem, asking specific questions, or general comment replies. Again, I'm a casual flight simmer along with first person shooters as my prime PC game preferences. I got hooked on combat flight sims in the DOS days beginning with Aces of the Pacific, then 1942 Pacific Air War, Flying Corps, the Janes series and later the Windows based MS CFS2, the IL2 series, FS2004, FSX up to the present day OFF, Rise of Flight and Wings of Prey. And as noted in my sig I'm well equipped for flight simming with CH Products hardware (joystick, pedals and yoke).
  5. I apologize for the short retort....frustration on my part. As noted, I have me the enemy and it is ME....
  6. Well, that answers the copy protection question. And, yes, I did copy the burned file from the CD to my HD but it wouldn't run either. Did you use 3rd party burner software by chance? It could be my problem is the default (built-in) burner software in W7 64 bit I'm running. EDIT: I just tried copying the burned zip file from the CD to my HD again and it ran this time (?). Prior to posting I was at about a level 8 frustration level so the no-run issue was self induced. Just to be on the safe side I copied the HITR zip file to a thumb drive and it tested OK (started up) even from the thumb drive so I'm good to go. I have met the enemy and he is ME....
  7. I was provided (3) download attempts through June 3rd only at the time of my purchase. There also was no info in the downlink pertaining to downloading the expansion in the future in the event of a HD crash, etc., nor could I find any such reference in the HITR FAQ, thus my question. No offense intended by any means, and while appreciative of you taking time to reply, offering an opinion leaves me with my question still unanswered. In hindsight I should have PM'd one of the Dev's (and will, now) and posted the results as reference to others.
  8. I'm not into online play and would like to know if the HITR expansion is primarily multiplayer content?
  9. Appreciate the confirmation. Just what I was hoping for. Again, thanks to all who took time to reply!
  10. Thanks for the reply. I did read the info in the link you provided, but again, is HITR content primarily for multiplayer - or - equally applicable to both multi and single player?
  11. Just wanted to post a global thank you to everyone who stopped by for their patience and helpfulness with the recent (2) TIR threads I started asking for help. Didn't want chance a tag-on thank you in the existing threads that might go unnoticed. And yes, I've decided to keep the TIR5. Again, you guys have been great and this old fart truely appreciates your support!
  12. Yeah, I've toyed with the idea of disbling one more of the axies. But after reverting to the default (1) Speed setting per the NaturalPoint rep's recommendation in tandem with a 25 smoothing setting it's become (the disorientation and accompanying feeling of slight nausea) a heck of lot less noticeable. While not an accepted "true" combat flight sim practice I'm using the target lock to help keep my relative positioning in focus (oriented in other words) while turning the aircraft to where the enemy appears in the range of the TIR view (ballpark about 80 degrees from center/forward) and from that point it's full TIR. Plus, with the TIR speed set to (1) and the smoothing to 25 the head motion is more fluid which helps, yet still allows doing a rapid head swing to the right or left for an occasional quick look to the rear as an alternative to the target lock. Sometimes less is better and in my case this appears to be the "fix" so to speak. Just to mention, I've also been flying the current Wings of Prey: WW2 Air Combat and have to admit TIR really shows it's benefit when the action is forward of the wings. Being able to stay keyed on the tail of a spining, weaving, diving 109 without using the joystick hatswitch really makes the game immersive. And like OFF, I'm using the target lock to stay oriented until I can swing my plane into the TIR view span at the default settings. Like most things in life compromise is often a necessary evil and with respect to TIR and my simming that means using the target lock in tandem. Anyway, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it... (smile)...
  13. I read some comments in the General Hints sticky related to constant use of F12 to center the view on an enemy in a furball as respective positions change vs leaving the view centered forward and attempt to pan the view to try to keep up with an enemy. Is this accepted practice with TIR? I'm new to TIR (one week with the latest TIR5) and still learning my way around the settings and frankly attempting to keep an enemy in view with rapid panning view changes is not only disorienting but visually somewhat nauseating... So again the question is: During a dogfight is constant use of F12 to keep the enemy in view range the preferred method vs leaving the view centered forward and panning to try to keep up?
  14. Question for TIR users...

Just to add to this book I've generated.....I've been reading through the TrackIR forum thread for the TIR5 and found the following posted by a NaturalPoint rep relative to the Speed and Smoothing setting in response to a user with very similar speed vs view range issues: "My strong recommendation would be to keep the speed setting at or nearby 1 with the smoothing below 30. If you can do that, and get used to the results within a few days, you'll be getting the best precision out of the system." So, I've played through a few quick mission one on one dogfights at the 1 speed and smoothing at 30 settings. At these settings the view from center is (as I mentioned prior) about 60 degrees from center with 90 degrees possible by quickly shifting my vision to look at the edge of my monitor. Limiting my view range to these parameters does help with the motion nausea issues - but - pretty much eliminates my ability to "look over my should" to try to stay forcused on the enemy after diving attack. I also moved my monitor back as much as I have room with gives me the optimal 24" to 28" distance from the TrackerIR on top of my monitor. All said, I guess I'll just have to resort to using the target lock option in tandem with the TIR and call it good if I intend on keeping the TIR....
  15. Question for TIR users...

As a matter of fact, yes, I did register/join the TIR forum and have spend time browsing the TIR5 threads. But I wasn't aware of the available TIR profiles which I'll check out - and thanks for the suggestion.
  16. Thanks for taking time to reply. In no way meant to be argumentative, but what I'm seeing when I increase the Speed setting with the TIR 5 (and yes I've selected the TrackClip setup option) so does the panning range and with shorter physical head movement needed. Conversely, decreasing the Speed setting reduces the panning range and rate of change but requires a greater physical head movement to view from the right to left extremes (as when scanning for enemy aircraft for example). The TIR 5 default Speed setting is (1) which equates to a (ballpark) 60 degree range of view left or right from center/forward. And the default Smoothing setting is (10). If I enable the "Precision" (F7) option during a game it does slow the panning rate - but in a manner where the view change lags my head movement which just about kills the ability to stay focused on an enemy during a furball. All of the above in tandem with the strength of my prescription glasses exacerbates the motion disorientation along with the visual related nausea feeling. You mention adding extra control points to the axies. As of yet I haven't found how to do this in the TIR5 setup manual. I assume you've then created a profile with the settings. Let's just say after almost a year of sitting on the fence about trying TIR (and looking at the myriad YouTube examples) my expectations haven't meshed with the reality of actual use so far. I'll keep trying to find a workable - or better put liveable compromise over the next couple of weeks with an eye on the 30 day return for refund window. It may well be my difficulty with TIR is attributible to the combination of the physical aspects (vision, reaction time, etc.) of being on the short side of 71 years old .....
  17. Unfortunately this is what's happening which may be relative to the "improved sensitivity" of TIR5 vs earlier versions. I do agree the 6DOF ability of TIR is a plus when in a dogfight but it just now occured to me as I write that the TIR head zoom ability may be what's causing my motion nausea tendency and disorientation. Point being, when flying air combat in the IL2 games for example with TIR where the game only supports up, down, left and right range of head movement I don't experience the disorientation or nausea feeling. But with the TIR zoom view factored in when flying OFF when turning my head in tandem with my prescription bifocal strength the rotational (head movement) relative to the changing arc distance to the monitor screen may be exagerating the zoom effect, thus the nausea feeling tendancy. Hmmmmm.....will have to give this some more thought.
  18. Question for TIR users...

Thanks for the suggestions. Depending on what's happening in the game I do fly with zoom cranked in to increase my peripheral vision when just viewing forward in the cockpit. As for making TIR less sensitive, as I've posted previous this is where I'm running into issues where decreasing the pan rate also decreases the panning range which then causes having to turn my head excessively when panning the view. And increasing the pan rate (beneficial when in a dogfight for situational awareness) does reduce the needed head movement but it also increases the panning range and the combination of rapid view change (by increasing the speed) through a near 360 degree panning range looking left and right results in the motion nausea tendancy and disorientation. Just haven't been able to find a happy medium so far - and in my case, TIR may be just too much of a good thing visually (I wear trifocals) compared to using my hat switch in tandem with target lock programmed button on the joystick where I don't experience the motion problems and disorientation (with TIR). I still have a couple of weeks in 30 day return for refund window to try to find a liveable setup...
  19. In my experience the default "1" speed equates to a view panning range of (ballpark) 60 degrees left or right from center which sort of defeats the whole premise of being able to sufficiently scan without excessive head movement. And the "speed" verbiage is misleading in that when the pan rate is increased with a higher "speed" setting so is the total panning view range relative to smaller actual head movement which is self defeating when trying to establish a panning range separate from the speed of the panning. As for setting "smoothing" to around 30, I've done that and higher trying to slow the rate of panning. Enabling "Precision" (F7) also provides a quick in-game option to slow/smooth the pan rate. What would be ideal is (3) view options: Speed of panning, Total Range of panning, and Smoothing the pan rate speed rate. All said, while TIR's 6DOF is a definite plus (aside from the orientation and potential nausea issues), it really needs IMO an added mix of programmed quick view joystick or keyboard options given the limitations of a 2 dimensional computer display.
  20. Question for TIR users...

I took your suggestion and reduced my pan range to (ballpark) 90 to 100 degrees which allowed me to invoke the Precision option which slows the pan rate and will do some experimenting with the momentary rear chase view. I still have about 3 weeks in the TIR return for refund window if I find it's just to much hassle for my vision circumstances and comfort.
  21. Many thanks to all for the responses. With OFF being the only game I'm seeing this I'll just have to modify my panning rate accordingly and/or live with it as has been noted.
  22. Just to mention, the monitor edge "jaggies" I'm seeing when panning is only an issue with OFF and no other flight sims (FSX, IIL2 series and Rise of Flight) or FPS shooters (such as Battlefield Bad Company 2, Crysis, Far Cry 2, etc.) which are a heck of a lot more demanding in terms of changing graphics content and complexity - and I run those games at near to max graphics settings w/o problems with my current rig (in my sig).
  23. With a monitor native resolution of 1920x1200 I suspect reducing it to 1600x1200 would degrade the image quality but I'll give it a try along with your suggested eye candy settings (again I'm running at a global "3" setting). As for my GPU's, each card is the 896MB variety and 216 shaders - and factory overclocked as well - but this said I am aware OFF doesn't support true SLI (was down this path months ago in another thread).
  24. Question for TIR users...

Thanks for the reply. My problem - or better put, one of the issues I'm having with TIR is if I adjust the panning range so I can pan 120 degrees (ballpark) from center to the left or right without shifting my head excessively the rapid rate of change result is where the nausea and disorientation becomes objectionable. Reducing the speed setting (and with Precision enabled or more smoothing cranked in) reduces the pan range to 90 degrees or less from center (and quells the nausea and disorientation) but then it also reduces my ability to stay focused on the enemy without turning my aircraft and by then I'm getting shot up. Just can't find a happy medium, thus my question about using F12 to shift the view center as I turn my plane. Maybe a better question to ask is what is your pan view range (in approximate degrees) from center/forward that I can use as a reference?
  25. Thank you for taking time to reply as well. As I noted in my reply to Olham I do run OFF with Vsync enabled - which when disabled in OFF results in a drastic FPS increase in my experience running Nvidia GPU's, but that was with my 20" 1600x1200 monitor, not my current 24" at 1920x1200 resolution because of the tearing tendancy during fast action in other games (FP shooter, etc.)
