You're very generous Lou I'm learning a lot here These WWI are a lot more sophisticted than I'd thought Nice little contest you're running Back at ya Red-Dog! -

Well I used to work in a lab that had a vacuum bell Reminds me of that, so my guess it's a manifold vacuum/pressure gauge (in the Pup) Probably used to help adjust fuel mixture Either that or it's a coffee perculator that someone's snuck into a Japanese Tea Room -
Ha ha! I recently posted in the "Stories from the Front" Sticky 1 of the Camels went vertical and we had quite a tussle At 1 point we'd passed (on top) and were both descending for another pass down low Flying alone at 6k ft there was no speed sensation from the ground and our relative speeds and direction were roughly the same All that was left was our horizontal (sideways) movements relative to each other Looking to Starboard as we converged, sliding under him, and watched him egres to Port was downright weird Felt like we should both stall, but of course we were still full throttle forward all the time

WHAT??? ...you mean Top Gun didn't teach: Line him up on your 6 Hit the speed brake, he'll go right on by Invert and go canopy to canopy with him? Book looks real good Here's a link to an on-line preview for those interested http://books.google....page&q=&f=false Last thought: Have you ever had the sensation that you're flying sideways? The path to the Dark Side MUST be traversed ...sideways

Even virtually some things won't change

With a butt that large, would you expect anything else? -
Book sounds good What is Shaw's background? One element of fighting in the vertical realm is that firing opportunities are fast and fleeting Flight paths tend to be more perpendicular rather than following in trail Like pool shootin, almost as important as setting up the pass, is the exit strategy to set-up the next pass Extending away is not much of an option as WWI bullets are far faster than WWI planes Good option is to attack out of the apex of his turn, pass, 1/2 loop right back above the apex of his turn ...Course that's assuming he's accomodating you by staying in his flat turn

Gorgeous werk there OvS! Must have been a labor of love eh? Danke, -
OK, highlighted text is why I assumed you meant B&Z Dogfights Series is what opened my eyes to the Vertical Realm Not prop episodes but the Vietnam dogfights Great turn fighter Mig 17-21's vs great vertical performer F4 Phantom For me though, excellent power to weight ratio and strong ailerons make the best vertical performer Not WWI's premier qualities by a long shot but everything's relative Aurther Raymond Brooks solo fight in his Spad 13 vs 8 DVII's exemplifies this Not important whether he shot down 1, 4, or 100 Only way he could survive this dogfight had to be with vertical tactics Sadly, Brooks having long passed, this Dogfights episode really didn't showcase this very well

I'm surprized that they're flying it IMO, when it's the best of the last few, it's the 1 that belongs in a museum Fly the replicas, 99% won't know the difference

OK, here's my wild guess The instrument is for measuring windspeed and direction Probably used to aid in bombing accuracy -
OK, I'll accept that ...but what about the 3rd combt mode? The jock who takes his less turning mount into the vertical to defeat his more agile opponent Not B&Z as there is no climbing/extending away, contact is maintained at all times in the DF

And I thought the Dark Side was when you commence flying OFF after dinner and don't quit til 2:00 AM!!! Grab a glass o' wine to help you sleep Get up at 5:00 AM to go to work All that day you're flying on the Dark Side!

Which is the best machine and time to start with in campaign as a newbie
Duce Lewis replied to OHO's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Well 1st I'll tell you what not to fly ...Sopwith Camel! In the hands of an experienced Camel driver it's deadly In the hands of a rookie it's deadly ...to the rookie! Most unstable crate out there Experienced flyers use that instability to their advantage Try some other rotaries, Pup, Tripehound and work your way up to her That said, safest bet is the F2b Bristol Fighter Easy enough to fly and that Tailgunner will clear the skies for you If you want a single seater, Se5a Viper (74 Squad) Easy to fly, good visibility, ammo load, nice sight, and a steady gun platform HTH, -
Yes, aiming the plane is the only way to go ...but I'd still like to give it a try If you could sneak up on an unsuspecting foe, initial shots might be effective Once he starts manuevering, darn near impossible I'd think

Sychronization may not have been the only issue for the Lewis Consider how the reloading process would be on a drum style synched MG? Sychronization linkages would require the Lewis to stay in a fixed position like the Vickers Reaching out over the windscreen and cowling wouldn't seem too feasible Foster Mount or the sidesaddle Scout allow the pilot to stay seated and change drums more easily It's understandable that the Scout engineers wanted to add synchronization to eliminate the 30o offset Fixed position would allow this but the linkages would be complex and most likely prone to jams

Hi Aristoteles, welcime to OFF I think they looked at a higher resolution map but it lowered fps or some other ill effect But don't worry, Devs here have solved lots of big issues and untold numbers of little ones I'm confident they'll work something out ...just may take a little time -

Olham, 1.32f was a quick fix for respawning in QC I fly 99% Campaign, so I'm skipping the "f" update
-
Yes, I agree, I certainly wouldn't want to be the poor sod up in that cuppola Underneath bucket would add more stability too and allow the pilot more control possibilities
