WWI Dawn Patrol Rendevous Sept 25-27, 2009
Duce Lewis replied to Herr Prop-Wasche's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Would love to get out there Always wanted to see this guy - A36 Apache Early war modification of the Mustang The Allison was a good performer at low altitudes and add some dive brakes... Viola, a high performance dive bomber Think she was the only dive bomber the US Air Corps had in WWII -

It was somes organization that rated climate, crime rate, taxes, etc. to try and gauge maximum enjoyment level Never been there but most off what I've seen of Canada was beautiful -
Multiple Monitor usage

Broadside, Triple Head 2 Go has been used in OFF successfully Here's the link to the necessary hardware: http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/ I see they have a 2 monitor set-up too, but never heard of anyone using that HTH, -
How can I tell if my aeroplane is damaged?
Duce Lewis replied to JimAttrill's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Sorry about that Olham I'll be more careful in the future I visited Germany, Schwalbach/Frankfurt area some years ago (business) I found your country quite beautiful and my hosts were most gracious They too found a way to pass on their feelings on WWII They brought it up in a very surprising way but made their point I treasure the friendship they showed me and sometimes name my pilots after them -

Wow, great stuff Olham! Love that Me109 vid There is nothing close to the sound of a WWII fighter in the air Here's a Me262 vs B17 vid: There's a local B17 / B24 fly-in that tours here occasionally Arrived late so I only toured the 17 Felt like I was in an aluminum soda-pop can No protection against MG, let alone cannon fire Gained a lot more respect for those brave aircrews Me410: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waUPuAvZjwo Wonder how effective those remotely operated MG's were -

Stumper, Do you know if these were field mods or was there that much production variability? I'm wondering if the Hisso Biffs had reduced armament to save weight -

Creaghorn, I think 1 of the biggest improvements in BHH is the OFF Manager's knowledge of where youir flight ends Added to this, replacing the spawns with 100% dedicated missions means sorties over the front are much more dangerous I was always Olham's "Mad Ram" but I kept losing pilots ...heck the whole flight over enemy territory Even if I didn't get shot down, a holed fuel tank meant POW Necessity forced a change of tactics, "cautiuos aggression" Still a Mad Ram behind our lines, didn't care that the Se5's had a height advantage And to answer your question: what did you do to have sorties like that? Why I purchased OFF BH&H of course Dunno, better to ask Winder on that one Olham, Strangely I've found that caution doesn't really reduce action that much Usually end up in a scrap, there's just a death dance to be performed with the AI 1st But sometimes it's best to put the nose down & run -

Think this Spad was chosen to get the American Squads into the fray despite it's short war service How about the Brisfits? Remember reading somewhere that the 2nd generation Biffs were fitted with Hispano Suiza's due to an engine shortage Sure would be nice to run into some underpowered Biffs -

I had, what I considered to be, a very relistic mission this morning It was a 4 ship (DVII's) CAP of our front lines so I tanked up to 150% of the expected roundtrip distance Enroute to the target we spotted 4 Se5's, 2 O'Clock High Gave chase but the Se's were on a mission and didn't engage No sense in pursuing, with their height and speed advantage, so we resumed course Approaching the lines, we spotted 6 Camels flying down their side of the front As we turned to patrol our lines we ended up on a parallel course, watching them at 3 O'Clock They didn't engage immediately so we took the time to climb and try to match their height Again these Tommies didn't seem interested in a scrap and turned away in a slow reversal Didn't want to be enticed over the front so we flew on climbing Next we spotted 2 formtions; 1st two Re8's crossing the line on the deck, running for home Was tempted but it would be a long chase low over enemy territory and those 6 Camels would bounce us for sure The 2nd formation was 4 DVII's crossing low & angling behind us, heading for the line - ho hum Clicked off the last waypoint and started for home, no action today Had 2 opportunities (Camels & Re8's) but the tactical advantage would have been strongly theirs More brazen behind our lines (Se5's) figuring I can always set her down quickly Made about 1/2 mile from the front when I realized the 4 DVII's were heading straight for the Camels! Made a quick reversal to give them support - here's where the 50% extra tankage comes in Good God man! wake up, don't you see what you're flying into! Sure enough as the DVII's crossed the line, the Camels peeled off and dove on them We nosed over into a shallower dive as we were farther away The Camels had their way for a moment, but we turned the tables All I remember was overshooting my 1st target (she didn't want to turn with the dive speed) Pulled up into a 1/2 loop, rolled off and hit him hard It was a wild melee but we mopped them up Tactics really showed here The other DVII fight lost 2, probably would have been wiped out if we didn't show up The Camels got clobbered when the tables turned on them Our flight exited unscathed On a footnote, we spotted 2 more Camels, low, after crossing back 1 mile behind our lines Dove on them - this was looking to be a banner day Hit 1 with a passing shot, zoomed and reversed for another pass... Bam! Archie nailed me! flames sprouting everywhere Guess it was a wide shot aimed at the Camel Waited for the screen to close and exit back to the OFF Manager But no! I struggled on, wobbled wildly but got the wheels below me It was a hard hit, but when the smoke cleared ...I'm alive!!! - woohoo!!! -
Twist or rudder pedals?
Duce Lewis replied to Broadside uda Barn's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Broadside, It looks like a wingover but it's so steep it's almost a hammerhead turn Either way, you're right, there's a lot of rudder in there But elevator and ailerons are coordinated in there too Wingovers are a great manuerver to learn for OFF - quick reversal of direction But I suggest that you concentrate on a simple flat turn Hardest part for me was to just remeber to use rudder at all Legs just sat there like dead logs But once you get accustomed, it becomes natural Legs just move on ther own as required -
Flying The Old Planes - Part 1: Nieuport 28
Duce Lewis replied to markl's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
The N.28 was a real performer I just watched Dawn Patrol last night The Brits were flying 28's and the German's Pfalz's & DVII's The lirtle Noop was making sweet li'l tight turns Combine that with excellent climb rate and good speed (123 mph), it's a mystery why she wasn't more popular The earlier V-Strut Noops had a much more serious wing problem Break a lower wing off and you're in big trouble Even so, these crates were much beloved by their pilots The N.28 could lose it's upper wing canvas but it was still controllable Must have been some hot debate at the time Even the USAS 1st Pursit Group was split over her -

How can I tell if my aeroplane is damaged?
Duce Lewis replied to JimAttrill's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Now that would be a real treat! On a similar note, I just saw a show about the Horten Flying Wing figter on National Geogrphic Channel Apparently US troops captured one intact at the close of the war Nat Geo wanted to make a full size copy to test if it was early stealth technology Link: http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/epis...ew#tab-Overview Now here's the gut wrenching part Apparently it was flown and performed well by the Germans But it was just dismantled and crated up for shipment back to the US NAT Geo was given access to the plane to take measurements etc Still sitting there dismantled, the wooden structure just cracking and dry rotting ...ugh! Conjures up memories of Indianna Jones and the Lost Ark when they just warehoused it at the end -
Twist or rudder pedals?
Duce Lewis replied to Broadside uda Barn's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Well, you're starting off really good IMO the Sidewinder is an excellent stick and TIR is a must have option My advice is to see if the the driving pedals will work, at least short term Pedals control Yaw or left/right movement To make a coordinated (left) turn; The stick is used to roll left then start the turn by pulling back Top Rudder (right) is then applied to keep the nose from dropping As you get accustomed you'll find you use it naturally in many situations HTH, -
Yes but with some increasing input to fight paths, and if you reach the most senior rank, some limited target selection This assumes that as a pilot gains experience/respect, he has some input into the mission planning This would all hinge on some improvements in the Mission Generator 1st I noted 4 examples of current problems above that necessitate changing the mission Thanks Winder, I really appreciate the chance at input and an open minded response One of the things that makes this sim special
-
I do the same, but I always feel like I'm cheating In RL, pilots were assigned tasks and expected to do their best to complete them If there's a battle raging, the RR Depot and Encampments behind this area are chock full of troops/supplies/convoys It feels wrong to select a Target in a different sector just because the Bomber flight path is planned better there Idea was to create a Flying Service plan that coincides with the battle raging below If the battle is in another sector, we could cover their airfields etc, as fuel allows We have RL weather/Squad Base Assignments - RL Missions would fit in too

Must say I was very tempted to reply to this But nothing good would come of it We all have our politcal views, you guys are getting your shot it now ...good luck M8 Suggest we keep this to flight simming and jovial topics Happy Independance Day! P.S. that one was for you Shred! -
I tried the Dr1 and switched back to the DVII for 2 reasons Poor forward vision and lack of exit speed DVII has no major vises Just watched Hell's Angels last night Develops pretty slowly but there's a great dogfight scene at the end Watching the DVII's whirl around was great Dawn Patrol is on the viewing list tonight

Ja, und kan't zee where they're goink!

The pilot episode of Dogfights had a segment on Rickenbacker He attacked 2 DFW's escorted by 5 DVII's singlehanded Scattered the DVII's with a diving attack (shooting 1 down) Then he dove under and up on the DFW's DFW's were tricky as they gave supporting fire to each other But Eddie repeated the dive and swoop up tactics till 1 of the DFW's fell The DVII's reformed so he dove away Important thing was, he never engaged in a turning fight nor a slugfest with the DFW TGer's
