Wow Nio that looks way cool! I found the link http://www.frex.com/gp/ But it looks like it won't work with OFF/cfs3 ...yet Looks like they sell you the projection screen and you have to buy a rear projector Problem is that it requires you to adjust the FOV in-game to get the periferal vision cfs3 only has a zoom feature that probably isn't up to the task Aw Nuts!

Where do the cartridges go...?
Duce Lewis replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Yep, I saw a documentary that noted German farmers, who are on the common allied bomber stream paths, are still plowing up cartridges to this day -
Rickety, I saw one of those gaming chairs a while back Looked interesting but I wasn't sure it was PC compatable What's the Make and Model of yours? Better to start with something that's proven to work Thanks in advance,

Planes:Exploding, or Flamming?
Duce Lewis replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I'm not buying the political angle These are the same politicians that funded the development of the tank from a lumbering, multi-gun box to the turreted configuration that we still use to this day The airplane evolved from a unarmed flexwing contraptions to highly manueverable, oxygen equipped fighters and multi-engine bombers that could reach far behind enemy lines In fact, wartime is typically a time of excelerated technical advancement I find it hard to believe that the lowly parachute was beyond their capabilities It's basically silk, weaving, and stitching ..technologies knwon for 100's if not 1000's of years What had to be done, a new folding technique? ...thinner, stronger weaves? Hardly awe inspiring developments I prefer a much simpler explanation You put your devlopment money and resources where they're most needed They felt that pilots could deadstick damaged crates down so parachutes weren't top priority Many German pilots felt the same way as they refused to use them This leads to the conclusion that the much feared flaming death was not the most common Cheers, -
Planes:Exploding, or Flamming?
Duce Lewis replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Gimp, Here's Wikipidia's blurb on the development of the parachute in the RFC It carries many of the points we both made Parachutes In 1915 inventor Everard Calthrop offered the RFC his patented parachute. On 13 January 1917, Captain Clive Collett, a New Zealander, made the first British military parachute jump from a heavier-than-air craft. The jump, from 600 feet, was successful but the higher authorities in the RFC and the Air Board were opposed to the issuing of parachutes to pilots. It was felt at the time that a parachute might tempt a pilot to abandon his aircraft in an emergency rather than continuing the fight. The parachutes of the time were also heavy and cumbersome, and the added weight was frowned upon by experienced pilots as it adversely affected aircraft with already marginal performance. It was not until 16 September 1918 that the order was issued for all single seater aircraft to be fitted with parachutes. I'm sure that after 90 years we could find many conflicting sources as to what precisely happened The main point I was trying to make was that if flaming deaths were very common, much more efforts would made to speed the development of the chutes As we can see, the RFC was much more concerned about pilots abandoning flyable crates than them dying in flamers Since a flamers destroys the AC and pilot anyways, denying the chutes would make no sense if they were losing a substantial number of trained pilots this way Cheers, btw Unc, did that set-up help any? -
Planes:Exploding, or Flamming?

I disagree The RFC had parachutes (at least later in the war) but didn't issue then for fear the crews would abandon flyable AC If, on average, a pilot could only expect to last just 17 hours, then odds are that he'll meet his end as a lawn dart If catching fire was more common than not, then fear of burning would be a paranoia throughout the RFC They'd have demanded those parachutes at gun point Burning alive was definately a threat and I'm sure it weighed on some pilots minds more than others But if it were a constant occurance then I'm sure there would have been more attempts made to protect the pilots My 2 cents, -

Pol, I think you did a masterful job on the flame DM I haven't had a flamer in a while Mostly smokers that eventually lose control and auger in But I sure remember a scrap about 2 weeks ago where I got 2 Camel flamers! 1st one burst into a fireball on the 1st burst, snap rolled & spun in 2nd one took more short bursts but eventually a fire lit on the starboard engine I pulled off expecting a crash He pulled out and it looked like he was actually attempted a landing Didn't make it though and folded her up Wow, just like RL! I like that flamers are present but not too common ...more special tht way Thanks for all your efforts -
Nice vid Cat! I was a little surprized how uneven the airfields seemed to be Didn't seem to phase them though When I 1st saw BH&H, I thought the bombs were a little too strong Vid shows they could be quite devastating indeed Thanks for sharing,

Don't know if this has been posted before but it's the coolest site I've seen in a long while Link: http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/projects/se...ion/flying-se5a I left it open to the Se5 flight page The in-flight video towards the bottom of the page is a must see Never knew the Se made such an intriguing whine Thought it was the wind in the wires at 1st but now I'm thinking it's the geared prop The Oberursal Rotary and Beardmore ground test vids are excellent too Devs might find some new ideas here too Enjoy,

I guess the flak crews got tired of me missing! (video)

Nice video HS Better it was a friendly AA Battery than a French one ...eh? I'm a D7 driver too Spads are sure tough More chasing than actual combat I point my nose far out in front of them Flying the shorter distance is the only way to degate their speed Happy Hunting, -

Arthur Brooks and the eight D.VII's...
Duce Lewis replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
The two accounts in the link do add an interesting perspective on the dogfight But they are written post hostilities and have the advantage of cross-border research not available to Brooks and the other combatants Brooks' experience and claims seem quite typical of fighter pilots regardless of nationality and era In 1940 the German Hign Command predicted the end of the RAF many times, but still the Spits and Hurris kept showing up Their mistake was to base their assumptions on pilot claims In the high stress of a furball it's easy to see how 2 could make claim on the same flamer or assume a smoking planes is going to crash Many of these same pilots went on to become the most prolific scorers of WWII so they were certainly capable Looking at Brooks' claims it's easy to understand how he could have mistaken 1 of the D7's that eventually crash landed as a kill Heck, he was surrounded by 6 or 7 angry hornets ...how much attention could he have given a smoker going down? The fact that he insisted on sharing the flamer with a dead comrade attests to his honesty I think his claims for 1 1/2 victories are what he honestly felt happened How the History Channel managed to swell this up to 4 victories is another story I will say though that I've always thought that this episode was lacking in detail The WWII, Vietnam, and other recent encounters have the advantage of the actual pilots narrating and explaining the action right down to stick and rudder movements Sadly, Brooks passed on in 1991, far too early for this hi-tech show The WWI episode really only showed firing passes and what looked like hammerhead turns If only Brooks were there we might know how to DF a D7 with a Spad ...Sigh! Robin Olds and others gave detailed explanations showing how they got their big Phantoms inside the much more maneuverable Mig 17s & 19s Cheers, -

This might shed a little light on the subject http://boards.history.com/thread.jspa?thre...ageID=700268352 The fog of war rears it's ugly head again But I think Brooks claimed what he honestly felt was correct Cheers, -
Stumbled onto this site quite by accident http://www.usaww1.com/index.php4 Great to see this stuff is getting organised and preserved The Map is really neat as you toggle targets for each Group Might also be useful for those flying without aids Cheers,

Hi K_Lynn, I don't fly TG hardly at all, but I don't think TIR functions there Only option is to rotate the MG I think it's a cfs3 thing HTH,

Just a Little Thing, But So Cool
Duce Lewis replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Way back in the P1 days, the 60 Squadron boys posted screenies where they parked 3 Nieup s in a hanger Inspired by this, I started several attempts to park my Se under canvas It's not as easy as it looks and I kept rolling up short Finally frustrated, I pushed it hard, only cut the throttle too late and hitting the back of the hanger Back then, I found out the hangers where virtual, and I passed right through ...only to find out the ammunution crates on the other side weren't virtual Bloke had 8 hours on him when he met his end Never had much enthusiasum for hanger parking since Good Luck! -
I think this was a great idea, but it was abanoned very quickly for reasons mentioned above A simple breathing tube could have resolved the noxtious fumes issues Who knows what direction WWI aviation would have taken if more efforts were taken here Sure would be a great addition to OFF Not only strappin' her on, but imagine running into Georges in your Albie! Cheers,

Next airplane for OFF?
Duce Lewis replied to Herr Prop-Wasche's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I've been waiting on the Nieup 28 for a long time I'm thinking it has the maneuverability of a rotary and the speed to keep up ith the in-lines She'll also allow us Yanks to enter the fray at the earliest possible date May be wrong, but I don't think any units were orignally equiped with Spads Cheers, -
Well I guess if you don't get thrown out of a party ...you really weren't having fun anyways!! Thanks Mk2! Really aprreciate the quick set-up Cheers all,
