  1. Hello, UncleAl wrote: "I've about given up on my Zepplin for just that reason" DON'T ! i vote for a "28-40-seater" lol, a Zeppelin If that's not possible i'd vote for a Gotha, or a Handley-Page. I know there's already Stumpy's Gotha, but unfortunately nor for campaign ... Any other plane i'd go for two-seaters of any kind. Greetings, Catfish
  2. 26" Screen

Hello, since you are at it - what would you think about that one. I had some Iiyamas before, they were almost the best back then - cathode ray tube, that is. Now they're making TFTs, like this one - "only" a 24", but still: Iiyama ProLite E2407HDSD-B1 - TFT-Display What do you guys and girls think about it, or would you go for something different ? Thanks and greetings, Catfish
  3. Hello, very nice ! . Thanks for the preview ... now ... when ? Greetings, Catfish
  4. Hello, " ...Interesting discussion, but maybe a bit off-topic for this thread. ..." Agreed, just my historically founded reason for having no problem in flying german planes apart from just having fun flying all nations Greetings, Catfish
  5. Hello Hasse Wind, we have discussed that before at length at the aerodrome and some other WW1 history forums. It is unbelievable what you find out when you're digging deeper. It seems England has just prolonged its policy of not opening its WW1 archives to the public, but "Honi soit qui mal y pense". There are interesting texts from a meeting in Moscow, prior to WW1, where the french and russian ministers met, and promised themselves how they would soon meet again, in Berlin, while drinking Champagne. Germany's fear was, and had been all the time, to get between two superpowers, and be forced to face a war at two fronts. Imho it was strategically and tactically (laying german expansionism ideas aside for now) the only possibility, to try to fight France on their own territory after their (France's!) declaration of war, and to win fast enough to then move all troops against Russia - which was numerically superior and well-prepared. It was astonishing for almost all participants, that Germany was able to fight this war for so long, and even win against Russia. But then it payed dearly for it. The thing is that just the royal national leaders of all, of Russia and Germany (the Tsar and Kaiser William 2nd), did not really want a war. It was their general staff that explained at length that a war would be possible, and able to win. The tsar family was driven out of Russia (with William trying to help them get out alive), and William himself was then blamed (officially for the war, but inofficially for not having won it), and was forced to retire - with all those general staff idiots remaining in german high command, and politics - which was then a "nice" preparation of what was to come. Greetings, Catfish
  6. Early WW1 gunship?

Hello, "pneumatic", well - Jentsch describes them as such. I also wondered, but i thougth it would be some pneumatic damper, against the recoil (?), not the technique of firing the bullets. Greetings, Catfish
  7. Hello, not only "In a way", french planes were the first to be really able to fly, think of Paris from 1910 to 1914 ! The whole world's pioneers gathered there to look and experiment. Certainly the Wright brothers were a bit earlier, but they did not really contribute - the french found the secrets of flying out for themselves. Jathos's and Grade's planes in Germany, the brazilian Santos-Dumont's 14bis in France - they flew even before 1911, let alone Ferber, Farman, Blériot or Levasseur's aéroplans. This was a whole nation in a flying fever. And i also find it very strange to fly for the british . I mean they were those guys who made this 1914-18 war a world war, in declaring war to Germany. Just think about Germany being able to get to Paris in time without british intervention, peace treaties, drawback at all fronts, and maybe no thought of revenge, and no Mr. Hitler. From all that i have read, including Churchill's and Asquith's memoirs, the Entente was not the white side in shiny armour. It became in WW2, but spoiled this a bit with their bombing activities. I'd rather be flying for the US in WW1 .. if there weren't those nice british planes . Greetings, Catfish
  8. Early WW1 gunship?

Hello, those planes using "pneumatic guns" were used in the Vardar valley, Macedonia, in 1916. Jentsch describes the planes and how they flew above the "Feldfliegerabteilungen". As he said it was certainly bad being hit by those cannons, but it would have been more of a nuisance, than a real threat. It seems in a vibrating plane, with a heavy gun on a swivel, it was not easy to hit anything, apart from larger buildings. Nice photo, thanks and greetings, Catfish
  9. Showing mercy

Hello, thanks Creaghorn, great story ! There was another story (from Bishop ?) mentioned in some other forum about this german white clumsy two-seater plane, that would appear tumbling about the skies every morning near the allied aerodrome, for reconnaissance. The pilots said it was flown so badly, and the observer handled his gun so clumsily, that it became a sport to frighten it away without shooting it down. They would dive on it passing it by a meter and then observe how the pilot struggled to turn his crate around. I can completely understand this , maybe because most probably this pilot in the two-seater would have been me lol. However when i mentioned that this gets my sympathy, the answer was that if this reconnaissance plane was not shot down, it would gather information, and thousands would die just because of this. Certainly, there is always this pressure from command and politicians, and a "reason" to kill anyone instantly without mercy. If it wasn't propaganda, it had those "logical" reasons ... however it happened from time to time on all sides, and while those stories spread on the german side (certainly also to show off and emphasize how "cool" or chivalrous the german pilots were), it was not allowed officially to speak about it on the allied side (giving way for subordination, or worse). Different ideas or so it seems. The white plane was then finally shot down, when a young fresh pilot, eager for a "kill", shot it down. Its further absence was then mourned about, certainly with a wink. Greetings, Catfish
  10. Hello, it has the best Zeppelin damage model of any sim, right. But then, how many sims have ever modelled real airships at all (yes i did get the joke), apart from 3rd party model for the MS FS series - and you have to fly them dynamically (!). The latter is, well, "unsatisfying" because it takes away the biggest advantage those gas bubbles had - to stay motionless in the air, at unbelievable (for the time) altitudes without spending any fuel - perfect for naval reconnaissance, and bombing. I have not yet given up to see a "full blown" airship in OFF phase 3 or x, even a british blimp like one of the SS class would be a great sight ! They used gondolas from fuselages of the BE2s, or the Farman Shorthorns (so the dev team "only" needs to model the gas bag, and maybe some small flight and damage model lol !) Thanks and greetings, Catfish
  11. OT Semester Abroad

Hello jxeboy, if Munich's not too far there's certainly the German Museum ("Deutsches Museum"), a technical museum with tons of history and early aviation, complete planes, models, first german military submarine etc. etc.: http://www.deutsches-museum.de/ However the hangar housing the aircraft collection is a bit outside of Munich, in Schleissheim: http://www.deutsches-museum.de/flugwerft/information/ Then there's certainly the "Hofbraeuhaus" in Munich http://www.hofbraeuhaus.de/ LOL however there are a lot of interesting things to see in Austria without going to Germany ! Greetings and have fun, Catfish
  12. Hello, i am currently running OFF on a E8400 dual core proc. (2x3 GHz), with 2x 1Gb Ram (DDR2) on those two banks providing dual channel, thus running at appx. 1333 MHz FSB. Rest is a Zotac 9800 GT (Nvidia chipset) and Win XP, 32 bit. So i wonder if i could exchange the 2x 1 Gb Kingston HyperX Ram, with 2x 2 Gb Kingston or Corsair (CORSAIR 4GB DDR2 CL4) Ram, and still have an FSB of 1333 - or would the FSB then be slower ? And if it would be less, how much, and would it still be better to play OFF with more Ram ? Will Dual channel also work with 2x 2Gb Ram, like it did with 2x1 ? I have browsed the Internet, but did not find exact info on that. I would then also switch to Windows 7, to use the then available full 4Gb of Ram (guess XP uses 3. something ?) Thanks and greetings, Catfish
  13. Hello, thanks a lot ! The P5K board supports up to 8 b Ram, but then with a slower FSB - and there is no application or OS that would be able to use this lol. Will look for 2x 2 Gb Kingston Ram, should then be able to run with 1333 MHz also. And for now stay with XP for the time being. Maybe buy a soundcard to take some more load from memory, and maybe also a faster/bigger graphic card. Thanks and greetings, Catfish
  14. Hello, @ Flyby: looks like the watchdog memorial Regarding playing OFF online - also would like, but have already withdrawn from RedBaron J_5 online, since time's pretty scarce. We have to finish building a house, and kitchen and some other parts are still in the works, the first floor is not ready to live in at all, and we have only one PC installed, temporarily in the living room .. How much MP is possible with OFF ? The last time i checked it was only cooperation fligths, meaning several human players on one side, against the AI on the other. It would certainly be more fun to have two human sides (chivalrously competing against each other like in RedBaron 3d - is this even possible with OFF ? Thanks and greetings, Catfish
  15. Hello Tony, thanks, b.t.w. will older applications be able to run on Win 7 without problems, and then 64 bit ? Not a list, just generally "yes" or "no" Greetings, Catfish
  16. Hello, found this link to Canvas Knights (formerly "OOF" Over Oleg's Fields) again, however it seems as if the work has stopped (?): http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=ForumsPro&file=viewtopic&t=6013 Greetings, Catfish
  17. Hello, a Zeppelin, maybe one of the middle-age height climbers, from L30 upwards (Regarding airships: nothing against a british SS or SZ blimp, with BE2 or Farman gondola - maybe an airship update add-on ?) Maybe you could first produce an AI-only one, with the option of a later flyable version ? Anyway those should be able to find in campaign. A Taube would be nice, but i know there should then be other early war-planes (maybe the Dev team sooner or later designs an early war-add-on with several of those early crates hint hint) More reconnaissance two-seaters, like from Albatros, Aviatik and Rumpler. More big planes, Handley page 0/400, the Gothas, AEG G types, Zeppelin Staaken R types etc etc. Greetings, Catfish
  18. ... and got a response mail from Avangate, as a confirmation. As far as i understood i have to download the 400+ mb software - what do i have to do now ? Thanks and greetings, Catfish
  19. Hi Steve, thanks! Just got some 4 more eMails, in one of them is the link. Thanks a lot Greetings, Catfish Edit: Ah ok Greetings to Virginia!
  20. Hi Steve, thanks, but i still have to download the file - do i get a registration code, or a link where to download ? Guess i look as dumb as a brick Thanks and greetings, Catfish Edit: Huh - i thougtht i was just answering to a post from Steve ? I'm having hallucinations
  21. Hello having "flown" almost all WW1 sims that ever were - with the exception oF FS-WW1, but i recently downloaded it, because of the Zeppelin :) - i would say that there are some good sims around. Ok, forget Dawn Patrol, Wings of honour, Red Baron 1 and Blue Max, along with some other minor ones: 1. FSX - very well-modelled WW1 planes separately available, but no combat action possible - and the flight models are not very "exact", apart for a payware add-on Dr.I and an Avro 504K. 2. RedBaron 3d 3. FS-WW1 based on SDOE (a bit like OFF on CFS3) 4. Over Flanders fields phase 3 with "Hat in the ring" 5. Rise of Flight. 6. The WW1 sim based on IL2 - don't know how it has been recently named, an older name was "Over Oleg's Fields", but they quickly changed that lol. (I would say those are the ones that try to give a realistic feel about flying a plane.) 1. I played FSX and FS IX (2004) from time to time, mostly historical planes, e.g. the Albatros is a free beautiful download with different skins and moving valves. You can even remove the cowling and look at the engine - but as i said not a believable fligth model, no damage one and no combat. 2. RedBaron3d - must have played it for years, becoming more and more perfect with the Western Front patch, Full canvas jacket and the HASP superpatch - but it is finally lacking graphics, and engine management. Still good overall, after 14 years ... 3. Did not fly FS-WW1 yet, but will. Looks good and we had some conversation about modelling Zeppelins, and how they were built internally, for improving L30's damage model. As far as i heard even the failure of one cylinder of rotary engines is modelled - will see. I have played SDOE back then, and it was a good sim for the time. 4. I have played the free OFF "phases" 1 and 2, and then bought phase 3 "Between Heaven and Hell" - overall the best, still small glitches, but it is in constant development. Regarding exact moving frontlines, historically correct squadrons in the right clours and places, with the right planes, it is the best you can get. The engine of CFS3 is being used for OFF, but they have managed to get into some hard-coded stuff and changed things we did not dare to dream about in phase one. There is also this air wrench tool to simulate all kinds of behaviour flight-model -wise. I do not know whether propwash is being modelled physically, but if not it feels damn right. As well torque and all kinds of stalls and spins are believable, certainly vary depending on plane type and altitude/condition of wind and weather etc.. There are some downloadable historical planes for CFS3, like the Blériot 11 and a Farman pusher, which can also be installed to OFF - but again the flight model is nothing to write home about, compared to the OFF planes created by the dev team. But it is nice for shows, and i am still waiting for a Rumpler, or Etrich "Taube" . 5. I bought and downloaded RoF a few days ago, but - may be related to my older Nvidia 8400 512 mb graphic card - it was not the sudden inspiration i had somehow expected. The clouds and trees look better in OFF, as do the frontlines. As well one has not the impression that there is a war going on, like in OFF, but the sim is certainly under development, so there's hope. I do not like the online requirement, and the one reason i finally bought it was the message that they will drop this in the in the next weeks, at least for mission flights - maybe later also for campaign, but that's not sure. Flying the planes is great, but really: It is not so much better or more realistic than in OFF. You cannot switch the magnetoes on, or off, as in OFF, but the "rest" of the engine management is indeed nice, having to warm up the engine and care for overrevving is also nice, if a bit overdone - the planes in RoF are a bit too sensible in that respect - imho, that is. The Albatros and SPAD are easy to fly in RoF, the SPAD seems almost more forgiving than in OFF. Since i only own it for a few days i cannot really judge it. The campaign is nothing to write home about, but let's see how it develops. So what should you buy ? Certainly all of them, there are not so much good WW1 sims around - support them and the people who make them possible ! Thanks and greetings, Catfish
  22. ATI or Nvidea

Hello, not only for OFF would now take an NVidia one. The 280 ones and certainly the 295 with at least 1 Gb ram are very good, but then the new ATI cards like the 5900 will probably beat them - remains to be seen, but all those cards are still very expensive. Sometimes it makes sense to look for the companies MGI, Sparkle, Zotac or other varieties of those cards, which have the same internal chip and architecture, but are a bit cheaper than original Nvidia ones. Greetings, Catfish
  23. Hello, try to keep up the speed, even if you do not lift your nose much over the horizon, at some more or less level flight you will climb faster while performing a seemingly horizontal flight. It certainly depends on the plane, and altitude. As well lean the mixture at higher altitudes, but do not forget to enrich it again when descending if you leaned it too much at very high altitudes . In OFF you usually need to stay 5-7 clicks above the "mixture cut-off" condition, to keep the engine revolutions at an optimum at all altititudes - which is certainly not correct compared to the real thing. Now wouldn't it be a good thing if the OFF team modelled the AI planes in a way they would also model the weight of the pilot ? Maybe it is not done because it would make their behaviour close to the ground worse ? Currently the AI planes have some notable advantages, be it just flying away or rising faster. As well the structural damage being imposed by vertical dives still does not damage them. I recently saw a N11 or 17 dive vertically at me, without showing any damage. Trying out an N17 myself i was also able to vertically dive without shearing off my wing. Greetings, Catfish
  24. English: German: http://ubitv.de.ubi.com/?vid=881 Will be in the store in early march. Only Type VII boats (but also the early A, B and C/41-42). Also seems campaign only goes until 1943, but maybe there's a later download or whatever, also other boats maybe. Greetings, Catfish
  25. New clip of SIlent Hunter V

Hello, i have it from subsim.com, but they did not withdraw half of the interview (?) - it is in two parts http://www.subsim.co...sh5_jan2010.php The dev-team (or better Dan/Elanaiba) said they will not go the "pay-per-item" way, but the copy protection itself is not yet approved, and they cannot talk about it. It is independent from the developers and Ubisoft's decision. Taking a look at "Rise of Flight" and thinking of a developed marketing idea i think it will be as follows: 1st you will have to buy the initial allowance to play the game, 2nd you may then buy the game, but pay a monthly fee for using, 3rd it will install Starforce Mk XVIII on your PC which will install itself in the eproms of your motherboard and can never be deleted again, until you pay for a removal, 4th you will pay for every upgrade like snorkel, decoys, special torpedos etc., 5th certainly also pay for every other type of U-boat, (5 1/2 pay for another face of your captain's avatar) 6th you need a special to be paid for permanent physical direct line connection to the Moscow KGB server, or maybe to Beijing, 7th you will certainly be online all the time and pay for every second, but especially when you are doing online banking with your PC. Greetings, Catfish
