i think the virtual careers were quite similar with lot of people here. that's really amazing. begun with wings on amiga, wich was amazing in that time in all aspects, but mostly because of the diary and the plot what happened in this squadron during the war. colonel charles farrah, when he shouted at you when you blew a mission and all the stuff. :threaten: that was one of the best schools about aviation history, packed into a story like someone is really there and experiencing it in realtime. i wish i could find somewhere in the web only the diary. i would love to read it again. :cray: . then of course red baron. really a milestone. where aces could even challenge you to a one on one dogfight if you are getting better. then rb3d. i played it for years with all it's bugs, before i realizied about 4 years ago that there are major patches for it. only because i was boring i typed red baron 3d into google and saw all those amazing skins and groundtiles. i could not believe it was the same game. i liked WFP and hell's angels superpatch the most and the manager of rb3d is still unreached to ths day. as a matter of fact OvS was the first person i have ever contacted to ask how this patch works, just because there was his private emailadress somewhere small on hells angels site. i didn't even know that there is/was a large community and SWISSA. i was really a big greenhorn with onlinestuff at that time. as i think to remember he was inbound in OFF, but still very helpful and showed it to me step by step, probably suprised why somebody was writing direct emails instead of going to the forum. but he said: "i made it, i have to support it." now with BHAH it's for me the end of the road, and i'm not planning to change it for any other ww1 sim in the world. only sim which could take me away is BHAH's even more beautiful sister, who will appear at some time in the future... :nyam:

What's your favorite WWI Movie?
Creaghorn replied to Duce Lewis's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
that's exactly what i mean. in real most people are considering himself as beeing the guy who's doing the right thing. bin laden and george bush where standing in front of their mirror, saying to themselves "i'am the good guy". everybody who is doing things, thinks about himself beeing the good guy and the others are evil. but mostly in movies you know immediately who is the villain. of course they do evil things. look evil, speak evil, treat people bad... that's good for star wars or lord of the rings or any b-movie with michael dudikoff. godfather or pulp fiction is a good example that it can be done without the black or white thing. the audience decides who is a good or a bad guy. or war movies. germans were shown beeing evil, japanese beeing evil... but rarely, at least in earlier times, enemies of the moviemaking country (mostly usa of course because they make the most movies) are shown as soldiers only doing their duty, having family at home and a normal life. a lot of european movies are also better in that case. at least french and british movies (though "das boot" is one of the best made by germans). sorry for getting off topic again . back to topic. yeah, aces high is very good... -

Hitler Parody: Over Flanders Fields
Creaghorn replied to Launchbury's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
göring once said to a friend, it doesn't matter if there is a monarchy, democracy or whatever. that's all a farce. you can always manipulate people and make them do what you want to do. only thing you have to do is make them believe they are threatened by another country or race or religion. that's quite true. today and last couple years is no different. for both sides... -
What's your favorite WWI Movie?

probably. what i never liked about most hollywood movies is there is only good and evil. the bad guys are always evil. you can see it from the first moment who's evil. and they know they are evil. i like movies where everybody thinks about himself beeing the good guy and the others beeing the bad guys because of different points of view or just beeing on the other side. that's how real life is. only view movies falling to my mind where good and evil is really close. godfather e.g. -
even with autograph of "chef" thomsen. very impressive
-
wow, very impressive!!! first i thought there is a mistake because the letter says könig instead of kaiser, but then i saw the awards are from different monarchs of germany. very cool. may i ask how many awards there will be for each country?

What's your favorite WWI Movie?

1. aces high for plot and acting. malcolm mcdowell and the young guy. you can really see the stage education. 2. hells angels for the best and most realistic fighting scenes. all with real aircraft and real WW1 veterans without the choreographic look and the fear of getting hurt. in fact 3 people died during the making. 3. blue max. somewhat ok fighting scenes, but a good storyline and a very good george peppard 4. dawn patrol. good acting from errol flynn and david niven. 5. wings. haven't seen it, yet, but i'm sure it's better than flyboys or red baron. 6. the red baron. because you can see albs in action and because the airfield scenes are nice to watch. but otherwise what a waste of potential and opportunity. 7. flyboys because there are many flightscenes (though nonsense and arcadish). but the cliches in the movie are even for hollywood too much. most of all the evil germans with no mimics at all. the main actors are very heroic and if they die, they die like heroes. the germans who die, mostly die like cowards or are screaming like women. maybe that would fit the old american western movies from the 40's and 50's, but at the time the movie was made they should have known better. -
Reason for screen name....
Creaghorn replied to DukeIronHand's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
from the main character of a novel i'm currently writing. it's not finished yet because of time issues (about 500 pages so far, and reached just about half of my storyline, but so far so good. just a hobby anyway). this guy descends from a family which had an Aries as ancient emblem from medieavel times, where they lived near a lake at some crags, so within the time they were called the horns (because of the horn of the aries) from the crags or craghorn. and as names sometimes change over the centuries, his name is now creaghorn. -
When were bullets with smoketrail common among scouts?
Creaghorn posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
everybody in this forum who knows me, knows i try everything to get it more realistic. so i want to try something and need an opinion and maybe some historical verification. IMHO there is a reason why in early war one was an extraodinary pilot when he had downed a handful enemies, and late in the war lot of mediocre pilots became aces in short time. one reason why the numbers went so high later is of course that there was much more traffic, much more scouts in the air, and many more novice pilots who got thrown into combat with little practice. but i think one important part was also the tracerbullet. without tracerbullets one had to get really close to the enemies rear and hit him from very close distance. deflection shooting was an art only few were successfull, because the bullets were invisible to the eye. you could NOT follow the stream and adjust your aim. i think later on (historical verification?) it became common for scouts to have tracer bullets. that made shooting a lot easier for deflection shooting and long range shots. maybe mid 1917? 1918? i want to have two sort of bullets. one where i make the smoke to default and make the tennisballs invisible. when doing this i also want the AI to do the same. So i'll set AI range to easy. i will have to get really close to the enemy, but so has the AI. then from end of 1917 or something i will drop the smoketrailfile and the visible bullets back into the appropriate folders to have it like it is now and set AI range to hard, where he also can make more long range shots. i think it's worth a try, but i would appreciate any opinions to this idea and maybe some historical evidence when tracerbullets or bullets with smoketrail became common among scouts (before it they only used it for balloonbusting). -
When were bullets with smoketrail common among scouts?
Creaghorn replied to Creaghorn's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
thank you for your information, bullethead. from this point of view i haven't seen it. i'm currently trying it without visible smoketrail or bullets. it's really a cool sight to see scouts chasing other scouts and circling about, and suddenly the hunted fells into a spin. that must have been the show the people on the ground have seen often. -

that's spooky, first the devs hear of any good ideas and try to implement it. and now one only thinks about an idea and the devs are working on it even before you announce it -
sorry to correct you, but there is a stall warning. don't know exactly wich of the overrides is responsible to make it visible since i shut all those aids down. probably the same wich shows you in yellow letters about stressing your a/c. i remember when deathrattle appears (shortly before stall) there was some warning in red letters in the upper left section

in BHAH it is a diceroll. the cause what made you crash and what happened to you has no impact at all. the ingame parameter recognizes your aircraft as unflyable (crash, headshot, small groundloop). then you are thrown out and the manager decides if dead or not. the cause of the unflyable state has no effect at all. you might get shot to thousand pieces in 3000 meters height and survive, or just roll slowly into a barn and die. that's why i decide myself if i'll manually kill my pilot. if i get shot about burning in high alt, and get thrown out without beeing dead by manager. i know he SHOULD have been dead and then i play god and let him decease. that's one of the few things i'm really missing in BHAH. one of the very few things BHAH is lacking lightyears compared to rb3d. in rb3d if you got wounded, you are wounded when landing. depending of where you got hit you might have been dead at once (headshot), only wounded for 2 weeks or so (shoulder or leg or something) or you might have been maimed if you receive a shot where you maybe survive, but are never fit to fly anymore. sometimes you might even get maimed and stay in hospital for a very long time and after a year or so you are fit to fly again. if you got wounded and stay too long aloft you'll bleed to death and fade away. even the damage model had direct impact to your pilot. if you had to land without landing gears e.g., with some skill and luck you could try to glide on the grass. or you might groundloop and nothing happens to you. but if something is wrong and you see your fuselage turning to it's head, then your neck will break and you're dead. the damage model had direct impact to your pilotmodel and the status of your pilot directly depended to what happened. that was really great. maybe also possible in future for BHAH

changing the names of pilots in squadron
Creaghorn replied to Waldemar Kurtz's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
what i'll also try is to add many more german names. right now there are quite few compared to other countries, so you'll get pilots with the same name fairly often. i hope i'll not brake anything or it's limited. but it's only a textfile, so when i add 50 more last and first names, maybe it will work. -
good point louv, i'm trying to simulate the learning curve with new pilots by doing only one sortie a day at the beginning. then after some more flight hours i'm going out twice and then as often as i get sorties a day. i don't think you came to the mess, said hello to everybody and then went immediately up 4 times a day. especially in the earlier war. the veterans of the squads went out more often, often on one sortie they took one group, in the afternoon sortie the other group. on dangerous missions you take the veterans, on patrols over friendly lines the rookies till they are ready to take them over the mud. maybe some day we can choose who to fly with, so if you are a veteran you can take some of the newbies with you. one time this group, next time the other. like it ol' RB3d. by the way, for every new AI pilot who appears, i manually erase his kill tally so he appears as a newbie and has to earn his kills like everybody else. i don't like it to see new pilots with 8 kills. besides he got transfered to my squad from somewhere else

changing the names of pilots in squadron
Creaghorn replied to Waldemar Kurtz's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
hi, there are two ways to change names. one way is to simply go into your pilots dossier and overwrite the names of your current squadmates. but any new pilot who arrives will have french names again. the other way ist to go to the pilots folder. there are two folders with textfiles inside for each country. one for first names, the other for last names. i have saved the first and last names files in a backup folder and changed the german names to croation names, while i'm doing my jasta hajduk thing. you might do it with american names. i can change it anytime back to german names again. what you also might do is simply save the french first and last name files somewhere, and then copy the first and last names textfiles from the american folder and paste it into the french one. -
tomorrow in germany windows 7 will be available for sale. i'm thinking about buying it. for now i have heard only good things about it. so my questions for the people who made some beta testing. currently i have windows xp professional sp3. it's said windows 7 works faster and more efficient. compared to vista? would it also be faster than xp? will BHAH, trackir and pedals and all that stuff work with win7? do you recommend it? thank you creaghorn
-
jesus. exactly at 9 a.m. i was on amazon for the preorder to get win7 for 50€. server was down. obviously too much traffic. 3 minutes later the contingent was gone. i'm glad it was only online. i've seen reports on tv when some electro markets open in some countries, and there is a stampede of people rushing through it from the moment the doors open. and they destroy everything, almost kill each other just to get a egg boiler 2 bucks cheaper...

How do YOU write your claim form?
Creaghorn replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
i think that was done on purpose to remove the pending number, because people began only to pay attention to this pending numbers and that killed the purpose of the whole claimthing. in real they didn't have pending numbers, too so that's why they removed it. personally i like it the way of not knowing how the chances for confirmation will be -
thank you all for your comments. as far as i have red i will stick with 32 bit and give win7 a try. i don't think i do enough puterstuff for really need 64bits. i don't know what name my processor has, but i couldn't even oc it in bios even if i knew how, so i assume it might also be incompatible with 64bits. whatever. i think win7 deserves a chance. thank you

What Does Your Cockpit Look Like?
Creaghorn replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
interesting. i'm a southpaw, too. besides sports, there i'm righthanded. interesting how many lefties are around -
sorry about some stupid questions, since i'm no genious about all this stuff. where is the difference between 64bit and 32bit? what does 64 make better? and how could i find out if my rig could handle 64bit? :umnik2:
-
thank you test pilot, just saw your post after i posted mine, so we crossed it, sorry. i would do more things on it besides playing OFF. hardwares should be able to run since the were originally for vista and about a year old yet. asked a friend for 64 bit, and he said i should take the 32 version, because there are not as far as many drivers for 64 as for 32. lot of hardware and other stuff (graphic card?trackir? joystick...?) wouldn't have the right drivers available. so i would often have to wait for some 64 bit drivers appear somewhere. as you can see, i'm not the pc-guru of the century .

it's said it's no upgrade but a complete OS. just would like to hear some opinions about windows 7, compared to XP regarding performance. i would like to have windows 7, but i would only do it if it's really better than xp. of course it's better than vista, that's no art i know there were some people here who had tried it. any opinions would be appreciated
