  1. G'day, quack, yes I'm using Pete01's FMs and yes for the few aircraft I've flown they make a great difference, but still no bombs for the Aviatik. I've been fiddling with this bomb problem all weekend now. The wife thinks I'm insane, yet again. Look, I know from experience these thing should work, its just a program after all, right? I've missed something, left something out or just got it all wrong. I just wanted to know that the data I posted above was at least correct or valid, and I assume that for FEG, it is. As for FE2, I will get to that another time. It would be great if one of you guys lived next door and could come over, share a beer and fix this. It would be a damn sight easier too. However, leave it with me. I'll get to the solution eventually. I always have. You'll hear the cheering when I do. Cheers Grinseed.
  2. Hi wrench, FEG for this particular problem. I run FE2 as well but I haven't modded anything with it, I had no success loading the Flanders terrain, so I thought I might learn some basics with FEG quicker by following the path of those before me. I only started flying TW and FE a month ago....so, so much to pick up. With help, I've been successful with FEG 3rd party crates, skins, terrain and FMs. I've even created my own airfields. Its only with ordnance that I have hit a wall. I've read and applied what I could find, but no joy. FE(G or 2) is still a premier sim and I dont want to miss out on any of the mods. I plod determinedly onwards. Grinseed
  3. Decals

Firstly, this is a great WW1 sim. Kudos to TW and everyone here who has contributed, its all excellent stuff. My old Celeron has been replaced with a 2nd hand P4 and things are now really rocking with FEG. Last night I had a memorable dogfight in a F2B against a pack of Albatri, and if it werent for the madman in back with the Lewis, we would not have made it home. Back to topic. Can someone direct me to a 'decals for FEG 101' thread? I have got to the point where I'm loading squadron skins, RFC 56 and 60, in particular (thanks Quack74 and dhasdell). The skins aren't a problem, its getting the letters to show. I get the roundels, the 56th white band, and the various colour schemes for the 60th. But when I select the 60th's early or mid skins in the loadout page the alpha options is stuck on 'N', which I assume means none because none show up in the game. No letters show in the game for any of the 56th either, despite being able to select a number in the loadout. In any event I am really confused. I guess I have missed a few things. Can someone save me before I screw up my aircraft and decal folders completely? Cheers Grinseed
  4. Decals

Good news everyone. I found the solution. All the markings and colours show now. I recently moved from an old Celeron to a P4. To get a good frame rate with the Celeron, object detail was set to low. I repeated that setting on the P4. That's why the decals did not show. Sorry for the heartburn quack. Cheers, over and out, Grinseed.
  5. Decals

Roger, quack, all the FEG skins folders have D folders. In FE2, only the 'early' skin folders have D folders, the 'mid' folders do not, but that's FE2 and I'm not using that at the moment. From what you written it does appear the folder names, FEG and FE2 have been swapped in the download. Small point I know, and sorry if I'm being overly fussy, but it got this noob confused. OK, so I have the FEG setup correctly installed (actually I found that the DecalMAXLOD settings in the 60C early folder were set to 3, but have edited those). For the moment I get the skins and the stock squadron markings but not the letters. I can live with that. Thank you for your patience, I know you have other threads running and other current projects. I'll get out of your way now. I appreciate you sharing your talents. Keep up the good work and cheers, Grinseed
  6. Decals

Hello quack and Wrench, thanks for your responses. Ok, For the first three questions: DecalMAXLOD=4 in all cases: DecalLevel=2 in all cases: no, the 60th skins have no number list. Fourth question "are there acutally individual letter/number decals FOR that skin?" I can only assume so, as the accompanying FEG pic with the package shows the letters displayed, but I really dont know or understand enough just yet about the folder structures. In each D folder there are black and white letter Targa images. Ok, my turn with a question for quack: No offense intended and I might be wrong, but might the FEG and FE2 folders of your download be reversed? The FEG folder path is: FEG\Saved Games\Third Wire\ First Eagles 2\Objects\..then Aircraft and Decals folders each with a "SE5a" folder with early and mid folders for each flight, but with only D folders in the Decals. The FE2 folder path looks more like the structure of the other aircraft in my stock FEG aircraft folders: FE2\Objects\Aircraft\SE5a.. which contains folders for each flight's early and mid versions, each complete with its own D folder. With the 'First Eagles 2" reference in the FEG folder path, you can see why I might be confused. However I do feel much better that there is something at last that even I cannot screw up ; ) I took the precaution of pasting the FE2 path SE5a folder to my aircraft folder, only because it looks more like the structure of the other aircraft folders there, but what do I know? I'm just a noob for the moment. Over to you and cheers, Grinseed.
  7. WWI Aviation Books, Set 1

Many thanks Louvert. I look forward to your future contributions. Cheers Grinseed
  8. Favorite World War 1 Movie & Book?

Apologies, thats Grider, not Ryder. The list was off the top of my head.
  9. Favorite World War 1 Movie & Book?

Ten important books on WW1 written by those who participated, but not necessarily in the flying services. 1. Winged Victory by V.M. Yeates, a Camel pilot. 2. Flying Fury by McCudden 3. The War Birds by the supposed unknown aviator, Ryder 4. Wind in the Wires by Duncan Grinnel-Milne 5.Combat Report by Bill Lambert 6.The Middle Parts of Fortune by Frederick Manning 7.Patriot's Progress by Henry Williamson 8. Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger 9. Under Fire by Henri Barbusse 10. Undertones of War by Edmund Blunden After this lot you should have a good feel for life in the Great War. Cheers Grinseed
  10. Sharp turn

In some pilot memoirs I've read, those pilots who fought Fokker Dr1s were convinced this aircraft could turn on a dime 180* in mid-air without loss of altitude. I am guessing that under the stress of combat, this is only what the pilots thought they were seeing. More likely is that the Dr1 was simply the most manouevreable aircraft in the war, or any war for that matter and accounts for Voss's ability to hole each of the six RFC56 SE5s he encountered in his last battle in a Dr1. Max Immelmann was credited for the Immelmann Turn, though it is now believed he was only one of many who adapted the tactic. The name has been adopted over time to similar moves. The original Immelmann turn involved an attacking dive on the enemy followed by a near vertical climb to almost stalling point at which point full rudder was applied to swing the aircraft nose downward followed by another attacking dive. This manouevre was performed in Eindekkers early in the war. It was the quickest way to reverse direction and conferred the advantage of gained altitude as well. It lost usefulness in later years because of the increased hazard of being caught in a vertical stall in the company of increased numbers of enemy aircraft organised in flights and squadrons. My two cents worth, Grinseed
  11. I'm a recent arrival, but I have FEG, FE2 and SFP1. Exploring and patching all three, but mostly involved in FEG only because it works best with my poor ol' Celeron, which will one day be replaced with something slicker. In any case after aircraft, terrain matters most, particularly for WW1 sims and while the selection of terrains for FE are already great, there will always be room for new terrains. Bring it on. Cheers Grinseed
  12. Hi all. Its seems that after mapping basic visual commands to my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro with the FEG Options feature, the red target cone and the white navigation devices no longer show up in the game. Even reverting to the default, fails to retreive them. It certainly makes the game more challenging but until I'm more familiar with FE I'd still like the use of the devices. I've read the manual and tracked through some posts here, but I cant see that anyone else has had this problem. Any suggestions before I wipe the lot and reload the game? Cheers Grinseed. btw, I have flown nearly all the WW1 flight sims, old and new, and it is my utter regret it took me so long to get around to trying FE. I think I may have found my new obsession. Kudos to all involved with the upgrades, improvements and general support for the game. It is, in short, bloody excellent. G.
  13. Spot on MigBuster, thank you. Glad to know I havent broken anything, and that I certainly havent touched bottom yet as far as learning about this sim. It just gets better and better. Cheers Grinseed.
  14. I've downloaded the game online from Thirdwire, this week and had a few flights and fights. The game works well. I tried to load the updated Verdun terrain and the Flanders terrain and hit a wall. The Flanders terrain folder appears in my Terrain folder but not in the game menu. The Verdun (and Cambrai) terrain appear as a 'Security Catalogue' in my Terrain folder and I am unable to access the catalogue to copy the updated Verdun files to it. Did I miss something? Any and all help appreciated. Cheers Grinseed
  15. Newbie needs help loading terrains

My thanks to cadeteBRA and FC, however I decided to start with basics and have now downloaded FEG as well. No problems with the extractor or Flanders with FEG. I will follow the path all you older FE pilots have trod. Cheers Grinseed
  16. Newbie needs help loading terrains

Hi FC, I downloaded First Eagles 2 a day or so ago. Apparently it includes the most recent update, Jun 2010 and I assume July 2010 as I'm informed when I use those upgrades.
  17. Newbie needs help loading terrains

I've done my best with the extractor, I've down loaded it again and reloaded it twice, but I'm stumped. It will allow me to access other cat folders but when I try to open Cambrai or Verdun I get the R0035 Error Message: error calling external etc. If I made an error of some sort on the way I just cant see it. Just to make it clear, I'm no newbie to flight sims, just to FE. I have almost every other WW1 flight sim and I have mastered various terrain editing programs for them. All I've read so far about mods for FE looks pretty simple and straightforward, but I just cant get past this initial problem. The few FE missions I have flown have been great, but I have a preference for better terrain where possible, it will grate on me while flying that I could be flying over those improved landscapes but for getting the extractor to function. Again any advice or assistance appreciated. Mayday! Grinseed
  18. Newbie needs help loading terrains

Thanks for the swift reply cadeteBRA. Despite your help I am still in the same predicament. I went throught the entire download process again with Flanders, unzipping the zips and 1. Put the Flanders folder in your Terrain Folder 2. Select in Menu 3. Fly The Flanders folder again sits in the Terrain Folder, but does not appear in the menu ingame. The extractor utility only gives error messages when I try to load the verdun catalogue (error calling external object function readbytes) Is there a readme for this thing? I am a keen WW1 flight sim player and would like to add First Eagles to my collection. Any further advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Grinseed
