how serious of an offer are you

Just out of interest.. what is the three digit code on the back side? -
I wouldn't be that negative.. there have been some good, and some outstanding WWII movies done in the last couple of years. Maybe the problem is that the WWI interest just hasn't been as strong? But flight sims like OFF and others are one way of getting younger people interested and more knowledgeable about that era, I think. And there are foreign films that have been outstanding.. Das Boot, etc. that were done on a fairly small budget, but what made them great was the story and the way they were filmed, as well as being historically accurate. I know it's older, but my main point was about the budget, and with CGI ability, things are actually getting much cheaper when trying to recreate historical events. Film makers have a big advantage today that they didn't have when they made films like The Blue Max. And that movie was filled with inaccuracies, yet most of us here seem to really like it; reason was that the story was so good, the directing, acting, etc... it just worked as a whole.

Ya, I would love to see Cecil Lewis' book, Sagittarius Rising some how made into a movie, even if they did have to doll it up a bit with a love story or what ever. If they could come even close to capturing the feeling of his writing style.. Wow!

HW, good points, and I'm sure he was despised, and rightfully for his occupation there and the way the people were treated, but something must have moved him enough to disobey direct orders from Hitler to level Paris. I can only think, like he stated, that he was moved by the "City of Lights" enough to save it; and it's fortunate that some other, less sensitive, General wasn't giving orders. Look what they did to Italy on their retreat, Paris might have looked the same... very, very lucky.

Sexy, to be sure, but no class. Some one like Catherine Zeta-Jones would fit in better, I think:

Interesting post as I had recently started reading a book about the theft of art work by Hitler in WWII.. the largest rip off of art work in history. Hitler's dream was to build the worlds greatest art collection, the Fuhrer Museum, in his home town of Linz, Austria. And yes, he gave explicit orders to level Paris, after they had stolen as much art as possible. He even instructed General Choltitz to cut off the water supply so that, "the ruined city may be prey to epidemics." Choltitz saved Paris. Most of what has been recovered and wasn't destroyed, and is still being recovered today, was almost exclusively through the efforts of the United States under Rosevelts encouragement. An American/British force of Museum directors, curators and art historians known as the "Monument Men" were established to find and restore the stolen and hidden art works. The book is, Rescuing Da Vinci by Robert M. Edsel. It's full of photos from the period and accurate, documented, research. You can learn more here (click).

Some good choices. The General Klugermann.. Sean Connery would be good. Also, how about Robert Redford? And another, Bruno Ganz would be good, he played Hitler in Downfall and the angel in Wings of Desire. All excellent actors.

Well.. they had to choose between croissants or crumpets.. an easy choice.

This site by Randy Wilson has some really interesting info and photos about WWI planes and those used in the movie, The Blue Max. (click here) Also, stories, WWII stuff, etc. Enjoy!

How about Lien Neeson or George Clooney for Humptman Heidemann?

This site has a list of goofs in the movie. To me they weren't objectionable because the movie was so well done, the acting story, etc. I think that almost any movie you can pick apart and find historical innacuracies, but there is a lot more then that to a good movie. Goofs in The Blue Max (click) Also, here is a website that has info by Randy Wilson about the planes used in the movie.. very interesting.. (click). There is other, fascinating information about the planes and pilots notes, etc. along with WWI photos, etc... well worth a look.

Yea, most of the aircraft used were converted Tiger Moths and Stampe SV.4s. With CGI and good historical leadership there's no reason why they couldn't have authentic aircraft and flight properties, somthing not possible using real air planes of the era that are too valuable, could not be flown as recklesely, or would not even be available. I agree, Olham, and there are a lot of gamers and others who would probably contribute what they know for free to see the movie done right.

The part for Stachel requires a youngish, "pretty boy" but rugged looking character.. Peppard fit that well. How about Daniel Bruhl from Germany? Also, Tom Cruze, Brad Pit, or Johnny Depp would be good.

My pick for Director: Peter Weir (Gallipoli, Master and Commandar, etc.) I think he would do a fine job handling the scenes and the characters.
-
OK, but let's just assume that it can be done... the question was what would you like to see retained from the original and what would you like to see improved on or changed? I would like to see more historically accurate planes and CGI can do that. It's been demonstrated nicely in several WWI flight movies lately, as long as they don't muck it up, which is not the question. The ending in the film was good, but I liked the book better. All aspects of the character build ups I would like to see retained, along with the feeling the film got across.

A few shots I can sprinkle through the discussion.. Beauty always comes first, I guess...

Brutal.. Landing on water, even when it's calm can be suicide; wonder how many survived? Those guys must have had the same commitment as the Kamikaze fliers in WWII ! -

What I'm wondering is, how did they land when they came back? Did they ditch the plane, or what, they never said? -
Just a reminder.. (but I do sympathize).

Thanks, Parky, it works great. I just dl them and then play them using my free VLC media player.. another excellent and free program for any one interested (click here). Until I found this player I was getting really fed up with not being able to play DVDs through Windows Media Player or other players that would bog down on commercial DVDs. VLC seems to be able to play or convert just about anything you throw at it, video or music. -
